Seattle’s New Restaurant Openings

"One of our favorite donut shops (that also happens to be vegan) now has a third location in Ballard. Expect the same fun flavors like matcha strawberry, glazed sea salt twists, and coffee cake donuts topped with cinnamon streusel crumble. " - kayla sager riley, aimee rizzo

Dough Joy Plans a Doughnut Shop in Ballard | Eater Seattle

"I noted that the vegan doughnut shop Dough Joy, which makes plant-based, yeast-raised doughnuts, began as a truck in 2021 when Christopher Ballard and Sean Willis launched it; after a Kickstarter to open a Capitol Hill store they added a West Seattle location and this week announced on Instagram they will open a third spot in Ballard as a homecoming to the neighborhood where the original truck was based. The new shop seems to be taking the former Cupcake Royale space on Market Street in Ballard, and Eater Seattle has reached out to Dough Joy for opening timing." - Harry Cheadle

Dough Joy has been one of my favorite spots for a long time, but the Ballard location truly stands out as something special. While every Dough Joy shop brings its own charm, this one consistently feels like the perfect combination of great food, great people, and a genuinely warm atmosphere. The staff at this location are, without question, the absolute best. Every time I walk in, they’re incredibly friendly, upbeat, and genuinely helpful, which makes each visit something I actually look forward to rather than just a quick stop for coffee or a treat. Their positive energy really sets the tone and makes the shop live up to its name — it’s always a joy to come in. And of course, the doughnuts themselves never disappoint. Dough Joy is known for amazing flavors and textures, but the fritters here have become my personal favorite. The blueberry fritter especially is unbelievably good — perfectly sweet, deliciously fruity, and always fresh. I keep hoping one day they’ll introduce a recovery or marionberry version, because I would be first in line to try it. The coffee at this location is also consistently great, which makes it an easy choice when I want both a delicious drink and a sweet treat. Overall, this Ballard shop is a standout, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

This is one of my favorite locations of Dough Joy. The staff is always friendly, the place is clean, and the overall vibe is great. It’s a pretty popular location, though, so if you show up closer to closing time the selection can be a bit limited. FYI - It’s especially perfect in the summertime…you can sit outside under the big tree, enjoy the breeze and do some great people-watching. The only downside is that parking can be a little tough, but it’s worth the effort once you’re there.

Google
The fritters here are the best thing - the blueberry fritter is one of the best I’ve had. I haven’t really been blown away by the rest of their donuts in general, but they do have fun flavors and good to grab a dozen to share with friends. Also love that the default for espresso drinks is oat milk - big fun of the iced oat latte.

Google
Dough Joy is hands down my favorite doughnut shop in Seattle. They never disappoint. The doughnuts are always fresh, always delicious, and adventurous. They have a good mix of the classics and specialty so there’s something for everyone. Vegan and gluten- free options too. My personal fav is the Vanilla Biscoff 👌🏻! Not only is the atmosphere and merch amazing, but the owners are the sweetest humans too. All around a good place to support!

Google
The inside was super welcoming and the staff was friendly/chatty! The donut displays really made me salivate. I ended up choosing the cinnamon old fashioned. Unfortunately, the donut was a letdown. It was almost too fried and a bit too sweet for my liking. The donuts are large but are reasonably priced in my opinion for specialty donuts. My local friend already told me that the donuts would be average.

Google
Oh my goodness, I am in love with this place. Have tried at least 6 different doughnut options and each one was incredible and delicious. Can’t help but to keep coming back for more. The donuts are pricy but literally the same price range as any other specialty donut spot in Seattle. The interior is cute, cozy, and spacious. There’s never much of a wait even if there’s a line. Everything about this place is aesthetic including the donuts! Great location, right on one of the main streets of Ballard near all the shops/etc. I think they’re still new and figuring out their hours.

Google
Today my husband and I visited this place for the first time. I am delighted with the staff, they are sincere, polite, smiling. The donuts are airy, tender, delicious. Delicious coffee. Clean, beautiful and light interior. Guys, thank you for making my day happier! 💖💖💖💖💖

Yelp
I love Dough Joy! I went here with my hubs the first weekend they opened and have been back another three times. We've tried more of their donuts and they've been great. My favorite so far is the cinnamon sugar raised donut. It's just perfect. My hubs doesn't have a fave yet but he had the raised French Toast recently and really enjoyed it. Service has always been friendly and the vibe here is happy and light. There's a lot of joy to be found at Dough Joy!!!

Yelp
Had NO IDEA this place was vegan. Just stopped in because we were craving donuts and they were honestly quite good! It you're vegan, definitely give this place a try. The woman working there was kind and gave us recommendations. Donuts were about $3-4 each. GET the blueberry fritter! It was like an apple fritter in texture but BETTER. Wonderful blueberry swirls of flavor throughout the dough and the glaze over the top was just perfect too. We weren't as a fan of the pop tart donut mainly because the strawberry jelly was a bit thick and artificial looking, but the dough itself was springy and light. They also have a variety of coffee and espresso options available. I will say the inside felt quite industrial, very concrete and plain feeling, and was also cold inside because the doors were purposely propped wide open on a cold winter day, so we ate our donuts quickly and left. All that to say this is NOT a place with ambiance that says come meet up with a friend here and hang out. It really feels like a place to stop in and grab a donut, but they are yummy!

Yelp
This vegan donut shop has a nice variety of options, with both classic and creative flavors. There's definitely something for most tastes. We decided to go with the donuts that seemed the most popular--the ones with the least left on display--and they were solid choices. The coffee cake donut stood out for me. It wasn't overly sweet, had a nice hint of coffee, and worked well as a cake-style donut. The pop tart donut was another good pick. It was filled with strawberry jam from end to end and it delivered on flavor. No skimping on the jam, this donut was heavy. It's a good spot for donuts even if the idea of "vegan donuts" deterred you. If no one told us it was vegan we wouldn't have known. Worth stopping by if you're in the area.

Yelp
Dough Joy serves vegan donuts. They have a great selection of gluten free donuts. Many gluten free donut places do not fry their donuts. This is one of the few places that does! The owner ensured me that they have a separate dedicated gluten free kitchen for their donuts. The staff has always been friendly when I visit. Their gluten free donuts are the best I have had I highly recommend the maple! The store front itself is small with a few seats available.

Yelp
I love trying different bakeries and donut shops. This past weekend, I decided to venture into Seattle. While Seattle isn't my favorite place to visit because of the parking and traffic--yikes!--I'm glad I went. Out of our five stops, Dough Joy was my favorite. I tried the French Toast and Strawberry Pop Tart donuts, and they were delicious--really delicious! When I got home, I looked up their other locations and was pleased to see they have a W Seattle location. I would definitely recommend this place if you're a donut fan.

Yelp
Probably one of the best doughnuts in town and you would never know they're vegan. I was bummed when their Ballard food truck disappeared, and then excited to see a store front from them a year or two later! It's a big store front with a handful of seating. Lots of variety of flavors. We got their Poptart and Matcha Strawberry. The Poptart didn't really taste like a Poptart, tasted like a regular vanilla doughnut with a strawberry filling. The Matcha Strawberry was great, the matcha was subtle but noted, and the freeze dried strawberry was a nice tart flavor.

Yelp
i have been thinking about the donut i ate here since i ate it like two weeks ago. i'm obsessed with it. i had the poptart donut but i want to try the others now too... obsessed... donuts plaguing my mind... what do they do to these donuts man... also the vibe is cool

Yelp
I've been chasing the high of a vanilla cardamom latte that I once got on vacation in Vermont for years to no avail... until Dough Joy! They had cardamom syrup for my oat milk latte and made it VERY well. Their donuts are a little more on the trendy side for me, but still yummy and in a cute atmosphere. Plus, the employees are super nice and gave me a free donut hole with my latte! Great spot to catch up with a friend or pop in for a quick morning snack.

Yelp
Always wanted to try out Dough Joy and finally passed by a location!! I think they recently opened this location in Ballard because I haven't seen it before. I was passing by and was shocked to see a Dough Joy location so I knew I had to try it! It was about 3pm on a Sunday and they were out of most of their selection. They told me since they were new they had a limited selection, it's also a smaller shop. The shop had a lot of seats and was relatively busy especially for the time of day. It had a pretty cute vibe to, and the workers were super kind. The thing that intrigued me about this place were all the donuts being vegan. That being said my whole family couldn't taste the difference, it's even pretty hard to believe that they were vegan. The donuts here were decent, but for vegan donuts they were exceptional. The hours aren't stated on Yelp but on Friday and Saturday they stay open pretty late. So hopefully in the future they will have a wider selection of donuts later in the day. Overall I definitely recommend trying Dough Joy's donuts especially if your vegan!!

Yelp
Super excited that Dough Joy now has a brick and mortar store in Ballard! If you didn't know, they're a vegan donut shop but as a non vegan, I can't tell the difference. My favorites are the yeast donuts, specifically the pride and maple bars. It's a little pricey coming in at ~4.50$ a donut but there's a discount if you buy a dozen AND they frequently have special deals if you sign up for text offers (buy 2 get 2 free, happy hour, etc). The biggest downside is that they get pretty busy on weekends but you can beat the rush if you come in before 10 am. They took over the space from Cupcake Royale and the layout is identical as before with lots of seating.

Yelp
Excellent service, impeccable vibes and delicious donuts. The classics are well executed (the strawberry iced donut actually tasted like strawberries not just "pink") and well you'll just have to try the everything but the bagel donut for yourself!

Yelp
These donuts have my heart now. They are delicious!!! I am not a vegan treat lover, and I can say I crave these yummies.

Yelp
Donuts were delish and customer service was great. coffee was cute but could've had a better test but the shop overall is adorable

Yelp
These donuts are ridiculous. I had the Apple Fritter and it was incredible. Huge and there's no way you'd know it was "vegan". Inexpensive as well. I will come here a lot

Yelp
These doughnuts are so good! The flavours are fun and creative. The filled doughnuts are properly filled. No skimping on fillings. The staff are all really friendly and helpful. Great coffee too.

Yelp
Stopped in before strolling through the farmer's market and loved the mango con tajin! Will definitely be back to try the other flavors!

Yelp
Excellent service, delicious donuts and great coffee. The coffee cake donut truly tastes like coffee cake and the blueberry is delicious. The entire staff was very friendly and efficient. Update - I had no idea these were made without dairy or eggs. Surprising since this is better than other donut places in the area.

Yelp
Honestly, some of the best donuts Ive ever had. I really appreciate how nice the staff is and how allergy-friendly Dough Joy is
