"In the heart of downtown lies East India Co., and while it’s known best for dishes like korma and makhani, the standout dish here is the machli ka tikka: Chinook salmon roasted with mustard, garlic, ginger, and curry in a fiery clay tandoor over hardwood. The tandoori platter is a nice sampling of several strong East India Co. dishes, including the salmon and laziz paslian, a fresh herb-marinated lamb chop." - Rebecca Roland, Ron Scott, Eater Staff

Google
One of the best Indian food I have ever had. We ordered samosa and tikka masala with lamb. The lamb was very well cooked and the masala tasted amazing. The samosa was delicious too, but a bit spicy for my taste. The garlic naan was large and fresh. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Google
My man and I were fiending for some tasty Indian cuisine, so we went here on a cute date. The ambience is inviting and comfy, and the service was good. Cutie-chan got the tikka masala with lamb and I had the makhani with shrimp. Both dishes were so flavorful and the portions were generous at a good price. The mango lassi was absolutely delightful! (He also got garlic naan, but it's not GF so I couldn't try it. 😣 He seemed to enjoy it greatly though.) We very much recommend!

Google
I host an Indian food Meetup and a group of us were going to another spot nearby. A large tree fell near that original venue and we pivoted to East India Co less than a mile away. The team at @eastindiacopdx was gracious enough to host 20 people with a few minutes notice and we all made the transition. The food was excellent, the service super friendly, and we all had a fantastic time!

Google
Very traditional cuisine. Every time I go, 4 out of five tables are Indian, so must be a familiar taste for them. The lamb Makhani is by far my favorite here. Probably my favorite food overall. I ordered Vindaloo this time, and while the flavor was there, the paprika was a little overpowered by the chili. My favorite has been the lamb makhani. More review to come. This review is incomplete

Google
We got in second attempt, first time went without reservation so had to Come back. Coming to food , food was very delicious, being vegetarian we tried multiple dishes and all of them were superb. Food presentation and platting was also very good specially Samosa chaat,i have never seen samsa in this shape and platted like this, very tasty, if you really like spicy order for level 4 or 5. Service was very fast and staff was very nice and courteous.Ambience is also very good.

Google
Nice place for Indian food. The atmosphere is more polished than most of the Indian restaurants in the area, so a little pricey. Food taste and flavors are good. Dal, kofta and paneer we tried had good flavor. Dal was a little under cooked, but flavor was good. Naan was a little too hard but manageable. Overall a nice place with good food to spend time.

Google
We came here for our anniversary and the staff was very nice and knowledgeable. As it was our first time here, the waiter helped us decide what we should get. The food was spectacular and very authentic. We will definitely be back!

Google
Great ambience, delicious food. Quick service for a party of 10ppl. Street food served in a non traditional setup (never thought papdi chaat, samosa chaat could be served like that). Do try chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. Tandoori chicken masala was yummy. Vindaloo chicken was too sweet and Sharabi lassi is a bit overhyped, but overall impressed with the food.

Yelp
For my wife and I, this is our choice when we are doing a downtown date night. Excellent food and atmosphere, and the service is great too.

Yelp
After having lived in Portland for such a long time, I'm just amazed how I have never visited this place or maybe I do know --because it's not as authentic as I prefer my Indian food to be. The restaurant is located at a very good location and many years ago even used to be one of the popular Indian restaurants in the city, I believe that's not the case anymore. We made reservations 30 minutes before we arrived, but the place was almost 70% occupied and the bar area was totally empty but the staff had made it seem like the place was overflowing with people and pushed us really hard to reserve stating that they are jampacked that evening . Its worse since they were closing soon as well and they failed to mention that when we were reserving . The establishment is huge, but the decor is very dated. It feels like you're suddenly 20 years back in time with the dull walls and old school restaurant music. We were seated at one of those bigger nice booths and the seating was comfortable. Our drinks and appetizers arrived quickly, but we were informed that the restaurant closes at 10 PM, leaving us with less time to enjoy our meal. The food was a mix of highs and lows: the Malai Tikka was delicious, but the potato curry was below mediocre. The portions were generous, and most items on the menu are shareable, which is a plus for trying different dishes. The staff was alright, but I didn't personally like the fact that they kept pushing us to order soon. I believe they could have let us know when we made a reservation that they were closing early and there wouldn't be enough time to sit and eat properly. This would have made us either arrive sooner or we would have probably chosen a different place especially since we were meeting friends and would have preferred to spend some more time . Parking is hard specially with the downtown situation and break-ins . I didn't particularly feel safe parking my car nearby but had very less choices.

Yelp
The way I differentiate a good Indian restaurant from a great one if by the quality of their Biryani. I have to say East India Co Grill is a *good* Indian restaurant. I ordered their Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani and it was pretty ordinary (nothing out of the world). The presentation of the food was nice, but the quantity of Biryani for $17-18 was quite less if you compare with other Indian establishments in the area. I finished the plate of Biryani quite easily and there was room for more in my stomach. I could see the many flavors in the biryani tingling the taste buds of someone not from South Asia but as an Indian, it didn't excite me. Personally, I'd have preferred if there was more chicken and less raisins in the Biryani. It seems like the kitchen was a little stingy when it came to putting chicken in the dish. The ambience of the restaurant is probably one of the best, if not the best, for an Indian restaurant in the area.

Yelp
So my partner is Celiac and cannot tolerate gluten in any way, shape, or form. So Indian food works really well for her, as most Indian dishes can be prepared gluten free. After an afternoon watching the Portland Thorns play the Kansas City Current (Thorns won, 3-0, go Thorns!), we made a side trip to the East India Company restaurant before heading home. The entry is one long bar, and is very elegant. We approached the hostess, who asked if we had reservations. We did not, but she said she could make something work if we were willing to wait. We were and she was wonderful about letting us know what was going on. When we got to the main dining area, the ambiance was fantastic. A gorgeous sculpture hangs overhead and the tables are dark and romantic. The smell is of wonderful curry and there is a sense that every table is separate from every other table, giving you a sense of privacy, even if someone is sitting next to you. My partner is in love with the Machli Ka Tikka, a salmon curry that she just dies for. Our server suggested to her that it would be four pieces of fish, so she might want to go for another dish. That being said, she also went with a Murg Tikka, a chicken in yogurt and saffron. I don't like fish, but I love chicken, and I found it to be amazing. I would also note that the pieces of salmon that were served to us were HUGE! Huge enough that, along with some bits of the Murg Tikka and my own dish, my partner basically took most of the chicken home. I was going to go for the chicken vindaloo, myself, but that's not able to be prepared gluten free at East India Co. As part of us going out on date night and making events of the evenings we get to ourselves, I try my best to eat gluten free myself so that we can share dishes. Therefore, I went with the chicken Makhani, basically butter chicken. For spice, I asked for it to be as spicy as possible. Not "I say I like spicy but I think ketchup is spicy," but "spicy like I like it hot" spicy. The waitress said she absolutely understood. The sauce, chicken, and rice under it were wonderful. Rich and thick, and hot, though not debilitatingly hot. The butter and cream in the sauce are going to tone down a lot of those spices, so it was middling hot to both our pallets, at best. Still, it was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening, along with some nice glasses of wine, and pleasant conversation and company. Next time we get out to a Thorns game, we'll definitely make reservations, but this is one of our go-to restaurants now.

Yelp
Great quality and fun place to hangout! Their Dal is fantastic! I enjoy their lunch specials

Dyme D.

Yelp
Great Food and the customer service was great also. The Saag Panner and the Chicken Tikka Masala was really good. The restaurent it self was nice and clean. Will come back forsure.

Sanjit K.

Yelp
Really quality ingredients. A bit out of the way location. Solid service. Had the lamb vindaloo, and saag paneer, and also the Tandoori muxed grill (outstanding salmon and lamb kebob) with rice and Naan, and a bottle of Cab, very good all around. A bit sleepy of a place, but hits the Indian food cravings!

Kelly S.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere--once you get in the door. (Sadly there are signs of homeless people and drug use on the street.) But it's definitely worth going there, as the quality of the authentic Indian food and the service is stellar. We'll definitely be returning!

Kedma o.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and unfortunately this will be my last time. After the pandemic there quality of food declined and their menu is not truly authentic. I love Indian food . One of my favorite items is Chai. They used to make amazing Chai and they've removed that from the menu. Very disappointing. They also used to have amazing Pappadum with an assortment of items to go along with it and they removed it from the menu as well. Very disappointed. There food is overcooked as if they've moved into a fast food attitude and lost the meaning of authentic cooking. Honestly it took a lot to write this post because they were one of my top places in Portland but after yesterday's meal, I will venture and find a new Indian place. It's a bittersweet decision but it's no longer the restaurant I remember it to be.

Ahmed A.

Yelp
I moved out here from Dallas, TX about 3 years ago and have been looking for a good Indian place to go to and finally I could say this is it. A friend told us about it and we all came here last week. It was wonderful. The food taste it great, server was awesome, and the vibe was very nice. Not too expensive which I really appreciate. I did not take pics as we were hungry and didn't even think of taking few. We will definitely go back alone and with friends.

Letitia L.

Yelp
I really liked this place. The standout item for me was the Tandoori chicken. It seemed slow-smoked tender and juicy. I'd go back just for that.

Laura W.

Yelp
Food was okay. Wait staff didn't convey our wishes to the cooks very well or the cooks totally ignored our requests ie: no cilantro. Restaurant itself was pleasant.

Betsy B.

Yelp
East India Company is a very classy place with lovely atmosphere. This is one of the places we went to for my birthday. Our server said it was his first day. I was surprised considering Luciano was so nice and professional, more than many others actually! 1. Garlic basil naan -   Crispy, fresh and delicious! 2. Mixed green and mango salad - The mango was not quite ripe yet, but still tasty. CLearly being we ate it so fast I didn't take a photo till the last bite was left. 3. Makhani - Makhani means butter. Loved the tomato cream and spices. Wouldn't have minded a few more shrimp, I think there was about 6 medium/large ones.   4. Tandoor Chicken - The flavor was amazing; tender, juicy yumminess. But there are 3 issues. It does not come with rice or any other carb, you could feel it was missing. Also, it is on the bone, if that matters to you. I can eat on the bone, but definitely prefer off. Lastly, it comes medium spice and this cannot be changed they said. Their medium is my hot. So then even more you miss the rice. I shared my rice from the Makhani. 5. Free Birthday Ice Cream! Chocolate, mango and a chai vanilla. The mango was so good! They even gave me a birthday card :) I have had the Chicken Korma here before and love the creaminess. The current health score at 75 makes me want to hold off a bit on going back. But I will go back once that score is close to a 100. I will try the Saag Paneer next because I normally love creamed spinach with those cheese cubes at buffets. That spongy textured cheese....mmmmm yummy.

Aravind R.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food! Consistently good quality. Recommend this place if you are in PDX.

M K.

Yelp
This is one my family's favorite restaurants & definitely the best Indian we know of. My only "complaint" is that the food is so good here that we no longer enjoy the Indian restaurants that are closer and/or a bit less pricey. Also- family fights over leftovers can get scrappy. My suggestion: order the samosas & tikka masala. It tastes even better the next day. Nummy. FYI-we've found their hotness scale relatively spicier than other places. How about a food cart in Multnomah?!

Christopher A.

Yelp
Quick service. A nice different take on the cuisine. Loved the apps, and mixed tandoori grill.

Joshua W.

Yelp
Very elegant, dark, and intimate. We sat at a socially distant table for two inside. The service was quick and friendly. Sadly, they weren't serving chai. I enjoyed a mango lassi instead. We ordered Samosa Chaat, Chicken Tikka Masala (mild), and Garlic Naan. With the included rices, it was enough for two people. For the Samosa Chaat, the heat was fairly strong, either from the mint chutney or the channa. The Tikka Masala was outstanding - not too thick and very creamy. Garlic Naan and Basmati Rice were well done, too.

Brandon M.

Yelp
Wow... this restaurant was a real treat. Everything from the staff to the wait time; and most of the quality of the meal surpassed my expectations.

Ryan W.

Yelp
To start on the positives, the ambiance was very nice and our waiter was friendly. The food however was not great. In fact my wife and I both thought the chicken tikka masala was perhaps the worst we've ever eaten. It had a weird smoky/bbq flavor. Definitely not the norm. Everything else we had was just okay but nothing worth going back for and the chicken tikka masala was definitely a big miss.

Sidney M.

Yelp
My SO and I are vegetarian and there were tons of options for us! The staff was nice enough, but the reason this place gets 5 stars is the food! It was super flavorful and they gave us a ton, so much we had some to eat for a midnight snack later! The bread was homemade and tasty but I'm unsure that it was worth the price, I would just order extra rice if you're on a budget and trying to feed multiple people. Seemed clean too from what I saw.

Ploy N.

Yelp
When we walked in we're very impressed by the cool and fancy interior of the restaurant. There was an extensive bar area that leads to the main dining room. The light inside was dimmed, hoping to create a romantic atmosphere; this place is definitely a good date spot. We ordered the Samosa Chaat, the Lamb Vindaloo, and the Garlic Naan. The Samosa Chaat came with 2 samosas cut into halves on a bed of chickpea stew. All the condiments for the samosas were already topped onto the samosas, making it very easy to eat without getting messy. The Samosas were intensely spiced, every bite packed a punch. The outside was crispy and the inside was warm. I also loved the chickpea stew. Overall, the dish was a really good appetizer to start off the meal. The Lamb Vindaloo came next. It came with a side of basmati rice and our extra order of Garlic Naan that included 2 crispy and freshly baked naans. I was blown away by the tenderness of the lamb chunks in the vindaloo. It melted in your mouth without being too fatty. The curry itself also lived up to the claim of being the spiciest dish on the menu. The heat builds up as you eat more but, yet, you can't stop. The vindaloo, basmati rice, and garlic naan were a match made in heaven. I totally enjoyed my time at the place and look forward to trying more of their curries in the near future!

Terri T.

Yelp
We had a truly delicious meal here last night. There were four of us and we ordered so much that we needed a second table pulled next to ours just to hold the excess serving dishes. We found offerings we'd not before seen at Indian cuisine restaurants and they were all really good. The server, whose name escapes me, was friendly and efficient. This is a place well worth visiting!

Armoni P.

Yelp
The food is amazing! Will be back soon. The tandoori chicken in town can't wait to return

Takako S.

Yelp
I had lunch with my friends, haven't been here for a while and felt much slower than before. Food is decent, actually got a lot for lunch special. I really like my vegetable curry with cashew nuts in it and the rice pudding (came with the meal) and added a cup of chai tea after meal. The server was a little slow but not horrible service. It was actually not busy so I could talked to my friend quietly and liked the coziness.

Vidya S.

Yelp
Very spicy food the masala wings were awesome. So was the chicken tikka and korma. Be careful with the spice level. For an Indian guy the food was very spicy but good

Maisie K.

Yelp
My second experience here had a bit of a rough start... We waited more than five minutes after being seated with zero acknowledgement. The hostess had to flag down our server to get water and place our order. When the server came, she apologized multiple times and I think she may have pushed our order ahead. The food arrived within ten minutes after we ordered and before other tables that were seated prior to us. Love the food here! The basmati rice was wonderful... Cooked to the proper texture and fragrant with cumin seeds. Garlic naan had good fresh garlic flavor. It was rather thin, so the edges were crispy and the middle was not that soft. I prefer my naan thicker and glutinous with some chew to it, so that's not so much a knock vs. a preference. The vegetable korma was delicious. It had delicate flavor and was not overly heavy, despite being a cream based sauce. Golden raisins added a wonderful touch of sweetness and really made the dish. Cashews added another textural element. The rest of the dish consisted of veggie staples: beans, peas, carrots, potatoes, cauliflower and broccoli. As good as the korma was, the saag chicken was the star. The balance of onion and spinach made for a wonderfully flavorful sauce that was a perfect pairing with the rice. Its flavor profile started with garam masala and tomato, then onion, then spinach. In spite of the initial service snafu, the staff definitely tried to make up for it and the food was quite good. The dishes are a bit pricier than the Hillsboro Indian restaurants I usually go to, but it's well worth the drive and the price to me.

Tamal C.

Yelp
This is my go to place. I really like the food here. Great ambience too. If you're in Portland and appreciate Indian food, this is a must visit. Service is a bit slow. Other than that, pretty good.

Aniece S.

Yelp
I didn't know this place existed! We came here as a part of Portland Dining Month. I saw this option as my boyfriend was not eating meat at the time and Indian food has great veggie options. For starters we got the tandoori(grilled) mushrooms and the vegetarian samosas. The mushroom were so good and a bit spicy. I love the tandoori oven grilling, the flavor is like no other. The samosa were cut in half, dressed with yogurt and chutney on a bed of curry chickpeas. They were super yummy and surprised by the dressed sauce on them as I like to "sauce" my own food. The only thing for me is with them being cut in half you miss the crispy bite of the initial bite. I got the tandoori platter with salmon, chicken, lamb, paneer(cheese) It was super flavorful and had good spice. all of the meat was tender. The salmon was good and good and cooked med/well clearly to keep the good moisture. The food here in general is a bit spicy, so you may want to ask about spice levels. We had no problem. We also had the Saag (vegetarian) This dish was flavorful and spicy, it came with garlic naan as well. All off the dishes we had were flavorful and authentic home dishes.

Kim G.

Yelp
Great variety of authentic Indian favorites with varying degrees of spice! I know its the "Pad Thai" of Indian food, but I always get the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Saag Paneer! The tomato cream sauce is delicious and plentiful, enough to soak up with the Naan. I wish the Saag Paneer had more heat; next time I will ask for medium spice. The Aloo Gobi is delicious! Its a stew of mini potatoes and cauliflower in tomato sauce with lots of spices giving it depth. Try it! For the Naan, most people opt for the butter or garlic; my preference is the Peshawari (origin is Pakistan) which combines sweet and salty with raisons and ground cashews and spices. It is delicious all on its own or with a little ghee. Next time I will try their version of Lamb Korma, a very savory dish that also combines many spices with sweet. The cocktails here are as good as the food. Many of the liquors have "heat" which I prefer to balance the sweetness from fruit or mixers. Atmosphere is nice, has a bit of exotic flair. Our waiter was attentive but never in the way. They were very accommodating when we asked for all white meat in the Tikka Masala. I've heard they have a great Happy Hour so that's now on my list!

Laura W.

Yelp
Exceptionally good samosas! I got the veggie ones, with potato & peas, and they were perfectly (heavily) spiced. Definitely recommend. I found the shrimp vindaloo rather bland. I would not get that again. Rice and Roti are on par with any other. I ordered the highest spice level, "extra spicy," but it was not very spicy; felt medium hot to me so order up if you're feeling some heat.

Titas B.

Yelp
Tried out this restaurant a week ago - though the outside appears boarded up it is actually open and they have restarted dine-in and are doing take-out. No outside seating. The restaurant was empty so we opted for dine-in. Like many other places, the overall service right now is slow given new precautionary measures they are taking but they are being safe! They also seemed to be filling many take out orders while we were waiting - BUT I will say the food was worth the wait! We started with 2 of their drinks - I got the sharabi lassi and my husband got the spice on the rocks. I loved how innovative they were. We liked the spice on the rocks better though - I'd say the lassi is better left non-alcoholic. For our meal we got a hyderabadi chicken biriyani in medium spice which was perfect and really not too spicy! Great flavor! It comes with a mint chutney instead if a raita but it went pretty well. We also tried a palak paneer. We got this one in mild - it was also really good, but I felt like it could have been just a little more flavored - perhaps if we got a higher spice level next time. I haven't tried many other Indian restaurants in Portland yet but this one seems like a very solid pick if you're looking for Indian food.

Heather S.

Yelp
I have been here once , during lunch. Very fancy. The food is fine, portions are small, but that could just be because it was lunch. Service was fine.

John B.

Yelp
Hands-down, the best chicken makhani I've ever had! The service was amazing as well!!!

Louise B.

Yelp
Mouth on Fire Happy Hour! Many plates pack a punch; $6 Lamb Sliders thin red patties from the tandoor with albino buns that could use a little color, grilled, warmed through perhaps, or maybe thrown in the tandoor..jk those pre-mades would disintegrate!...the Masala Wings were however, yet moist with spice laden coating and 5/$5 were the the real firestarters with all else layering up the heat chart. THE BAR (obliges game requests too ;) $5 Spice on Rocks is one of those layers. Cinnamon clove spiked Vodka topped with ginger beer was like adult chai soda pop that went down way too easily...that straw could get you into trouble! $4 Bokers well bourbon Old Fashioned was also spiced unlike any other I've encountered but at that price, keep them coming! Cardamom clove cinnamon lingers. $7.50 Tanqueray Rangpur lime G+T definitely repeat worthy. Rangpur Lime is actually a hybrid of a lemon and tangerine, add in bay leaf and ginger and it perfectly balances the hour's palate of spices. LESS HEAT, more sweet Both the Chicken Kati Roll $5 and Bhartha eggplant dip with whole wheat roti played with sweeter notes. While satisfying the Kati with veggies and choice of chix or paneer, maybe a little too sweet and the roti not warm enough, dry and tad stiff. Garlic Naan off the regular. $5, while large and crisp is at it's prime served pronto from the tandoor, but like most of the dishes unfortunately, came barely warm, even the wings. For this a 3.5*, could of been 4*. Will return for the House Ginger infused Vodka Lemon Drop, yeah c'est passe but the ginger amps the ante and they did the spiced vodka infusion so well.

Lance R.

Yelp
My family really enjoyed the restaurant, the food, and the service. The garlic naan bread was delicious. We're excited to go for dinner again in the near future.

Mag S.

Yelp
Top spot for Indian in downtown PDX. Don't skip the samosas they're so good. This great for carry out or dine in. The inside ambience is very hip and fun. Not sure if they ever did a lunch buffet, but damn I'm sure it would have been good.

Lisa R.

Yelp
Vibe: A bit more posh than the average Portland Indian restaurant, but still casual. Portions: Smaller than typical for a Portland Indian restaurant. Service: Excellent Food: More variety than a typical Indian restaurant. Including lots of vegetarian options. Our favorites were Saag Paneer( spinach and cheese), tandori mushrooms with lemon and ginger, and their chutneys. Try the chutney flight with papadum as a flavorful appetizer. Also liked the Malai Kofta but it was not as bold as expected.

Brian D.

Yelp
A Canned Christmas We've been coming here for Christmas dinner for the last 5 years. Sadly this will be our last visit. We arrived at our schedule time slot, and were given a booth as requested. The hostess was sweet. The young lady who served us was a little green behind the ears in the service department. She made a "joke?" about spilling water on us, if we didn't hand her our glasses. Funny! We ordered Samosa, Aloo Gobi, Baingain Bhartha( Eggplant), and Roti, all vegan. We split a bottle of Pinot Gris. (The only really tasty thing of the evening). The samosas were cut in half and had shrunk in size. They tasted alright. The Aloo Gobi was a disaster!!! Canned potatoes that had the texture of rubber, tasted like nothing; and were swimming in a lukewarm bath of tomatoes sauce that was bland and tinny. The eggplant dish was akin to eating a can of spaghettiOs, too sweet, and a pile of mush. I was so disappointed and embarrassed with our meal. Our friends visiting form LA were also let down with their dishes. They added an 18% gratuity onto our bill. No mention of this beforehand, and they had never done this before. I would have happily tipped more, but after our horrible meal, maybe they were onto something... The only other positive was the owner/manager came over at one point and asked how our evening was. Time for a new tradition.

Jeffrey T.

Yelp
Wow! Some of the best Indian food I ever had. If you like Indian food, you have to try this place. This restaurant clearly cares about the quality of the food it serves. Your taste buds will delight upon your first bite! It's a must try.

Stratton K.

Yelp
This restaurant left me speechless. From the food to the atmosphere, it was amazing. Here is my comprehensive review: The service: Our waiter was great! He wasn't overly kind, but very helpful and willing. He welcomed us warmly and offered us drinks (as per usual). Later, when we ordered our food he even suggested things to us. This is above and beyond for sure. In addition, our server didn't even use a notepad to write down our order. I'll admit, this always gives me anxiety. But alas, our orders didn't get messed up; very impressive, my good sir! Overall, service was amazing, he was attentive and very kind. Best service I've had at a restaurant in a long while. The FOOD: The foooooood! It is nuts (in a good way)! For dinner we ordered the lamb vindaloo, chicken makhani, butter chicken and the chicken tikka masala. You might be wondering "Well, why so much darn chicken, I do declare!"; well it is because it is one of the best meat choices. The lamb is second, and then the shrimp. Anyways... the lam vindaloo was exquisite. The lamb is good, but the taste of the sauce is the highlight. It is a deep red sauce with a charming roughness. When it enters the mouth it is like an EXPLOSION of flavors. It isn't too intense, but a myriad of flavors that combine to make the perfect lamb trifecta of spices, sauce flavor and smoothness. It has a subtle spice in the back of the throat which is then relieved by taking a taste of the butter chicken. Butter chicken is a very smooth dish. Is is mild but still exhibits great flavor. Not much to be said about this particular dish besides the fact that it is some smooth, buttery goodness. The chicken makhani is a new dish to me but boy am I glad that I tried it. Overall it is a bigger dish than the others. The pieces of chicken are coated in a sweet/spicy orange sauce. The texture is similar in smoothness to the butter chicken. It has much more of a rich taste with a hint of mint. An exciting but mild dish. Lastly, is the chicken tikka masala. It is the staple of Indian food at its finest. When you taste chicken tikka masala it seems like India. The fullest, richest taste you will ever encounter. The spices liven it up while the chicken is perfectly seasoned, but it is mostly a vehicle for the sauce. The sauce has a rapid approach to the taste buds. It is unexpected but you quickly get used to it. An amazing dish from an amazing restaurant. In conclusion: Amazing food, amazing service, five stars, highly recommend this.

Yelp
This restaurant is by far my favorite Indian restaurant in Portland. Very ambience place, it's what I call a fancy restaurant but not over the top which is perfect if you ask me. We went on Valentine's Day and arrived 15 minutes early as our reservation was at 7:30pm, and still managed to get seated right upon arrival. It wasn't as packed as I thought it was going to be on this night, but there sure were people going in and out of the resturant which was wonderful. Our first plate was an appetizer (Samosa) which was a potato base samosa with garbanzo bean sauce on the bottom which was AMAZING! The order comes with I believe two samosa that's been cut into half which is ideal for two people sharing. Next time I go there, I believe I'm going to have to order my own portion of samosa. That's how delicious it was. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!!! I also ordered a lentil soup which at first came a little bit cold, but the waiter was happy to go and replace it with a HOT lentil soup. It was definitely a soothing soup. The entree I order was a chicken Tikka Masala which came with a side of white rice. Chunks of chicken marinaded in Indian spices, tomato and yogurt. I also ordered a garlic naan bread. Comes with two pieces which was nice and warm. I found myself eating bits of it by itself sometimes. Whoops! My husband ordered the chicken biryani which was one of the best biryani's I've ever came across. It was seasoned to perfection. And must I say, everything we order we shared and still had plenty leftover for the next day. We also received a complimentary treat which was a strawberry covered in chocolate sauce which was a very neat gesture from the resturant as many were celebrating Valentine's Day. What a lovely resturant. I'll definitely be around more often and will be coming for that Samos for sure!

Yelp
Best Indian food in Portland hands down! The low rating really surprises me. Having spent most of my life in India I can definitely say this restaurant has really good Indian food. Do try their Biryani, tikka masala and samosa chat :)

Yelp
Back in 2014, I was on a business trip and came to dinner wIth few colleagues. I had a picture of dishes with colleagues in my social media folder. One item I loved then was King Salmon Tandoori - it was by far the best then. I always wanted to comeback and taste the salmon. Fast forward, 6 years after in Feb 2020, I had opportunity to visit to Portland with family. I ensured we have this restaurant for lunch or dinner in our itinerary. I brought family to dinner and we ordered few other dishes including my favorite King Salmon Tandoori. The food served very late almost an hour after we ordered. The server was nice to keep us updated about the kitchen update, she did her best but seems kitchen was slow. However we were patiently waiting for our chosen dishes. Finally dishes arrived and as always I always take pictures to update into Yelp. We started eating. To my and our surprise, my king salmon was just okay and it must not have been prepared in Tandoor. I found / compared the picture I had of same from 2014, to my surprise, they have cutdown the items that comes with this dIshes, the taste is no more what my tastebuds remembers. I was still okay. However our dishes were disappointing - the Chicken makhani was simply as-if uncooked chicken was dipped into flavored tomato paste, the Kerala chicken was not étal any flavor of India. All my family were dissatisfied with dishes. It does not reflect on the server, she did her best. I don't think we want to comeback to this for a long time or would not recommend anyone until they serve truly Indian food and not fake flavored food. Thought to share this. Thanks for reading. Please write your comments to my feedback.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here on Christmas Day because it was one of the few restaurants open that night for dinner. First of all, the service was pretty bad. We were ignored for large chunks of time multiple times, and my mango lassi was forgotten until the end of my meal. They also took so long to give us our check and we felt pretty disregarded by our main waiter that a busboy ended up functioning as our waiter. They also charged us 18% gratuity even though we were a party of 2, and their menu specifically said they only do this for parties of 5 or larger. When we asked about this, they said it was for "today only" which only made us angrier because the service was so terrible!! I do feel bad saying this because the busboy seemed to feel sorry for us since our main waiter kept forgetting things, and he was very nice. Being Indian I would say we are pretty picky about Indian food, especially regarding tikka masala since we pretty much order this every time we go out for Indian food. We ordered the paneer Tikka masala with garlic naan and rice. It was just okay- it did the job because we were craving Indian food, but was nothing special (pretty bland, not great flavor, and they didn't make it spicy at ALL even though we requested this). I wouldn't return as I've had much better Indian food (but we're also from LA and the Bay Area where the Indian food is so good!). I got a mango lassi which was delicious, but honestly when is a mango lassi not delicious! Overall, mediocre food, way too expensive, and bad service. Would not recommend or return.

Yelp
Had an amazing dinner with a group of friends here. The Papdi Chaat and Samosa were amazing appetizers along with the Pakore. Rohan Josh lamb was amazing. Can't wait to come back again

Yelp
When in Rome, do as Romans do ... and when eating Indian food, do as Indians do. My co-worker and his wife both grew up in India and they loved East India Co so much that they went two days in a row when visiting Portland. When he proposed I join a 3rd meal, It was a great chance to tag along for some 5-star service and 5-star Indian cuisine. Since I love spicy Indian dishes, he let me pick the Vindaloo Lamb and Garlic Naan while he selected Kerala Fish (to remind him of Southern India) and Bhindi Pyaaz (Okra & Onions). All three were unique and wonderful without overwhelming flavors. I've enjoyed lots of really powerful and strong Indian food because I like the heat and zest raised to an extreme level. What makes East India Co Grill & Bar stand out for me was that the food was much smoother with flavors that seemed to blend perfectly instead of smacking me over the taste buds. Our server was almost as smooth as the food. Recommendations were spot on including a bottle of Rock Point Pinot Noir from Southern Oregon. Obviously, I enjoyed the entire meal while being taught that when in Portland, eat as Indians do ... at East India Co Grill & Bar.

Yelp
Was in the Portland area and decided to check out this place for lunch. Love the contemporary Indian decor. Our server was very pleasant, got us seated promptly. Lunch specials range from $10-$12 includes rice. Very well portioned. Naan can be added for $4 (little pricy) We had paneer tikka ($3) for small appetizer, it was the best paneer tikka ever! Perfectly cooked, tender paneer, seasoned to perfection. I had paneer makhani and my husband had chicken tikka masala. Both were excellent. I peeked at the dinner menu and it looks awesome. Good wine selection and very well priced, $5 for a glass of house wine.

Yelp
Had a 6:00 reservation, showed up at 6:00, when we hadn't talked to anyone by 6:15 and the line was five parties deep, we left. To be clear, I don't really care about the wait, I've waited longer. But the lack of communication and the concerns about how backed up the kitchen might be tipped the scales.
