This is hands down one of the most popular hidden-gem Japanese izakayas in San Diego, famous for its tonkatsu—so make sure you book a table via their app in advance! We got turned away once before because the place was fully packed. Specializing in Osaka-style fare, the restaurant is decorated with all the cozy, bustling vibes of a Kansai izakaya.
The signature tonkatsu dishes are a must-order. We were worried the Deluxe Katsu Platter wouldn’t be enough for two people—it comes with scallops, shrimp, and black pork, a nice variety but with modest portions—so we opted for two separate plates instead: one lean pork cutlet and one fried shrimp 🍤, plus an extra miso soup and rice 🍚. The pork cutlet had a light, crispy panko crust that crunched satisfyingly with every bite, and it was neither greasy nor dry. However, it had a strong porky flavor, and wasn’t as flavorful as we’d expected. The three-piece fried shrimp was a decent deal at $25—each shrimp is cut in half—but the batter was a bit soft, not crispy enough to pop in one bite, so you’ll need to chew a few times.
The overall atmosphere is that of a warm, cozy Japanese bistro, with indoor seating, a bar counter, and an outdoor patio to choose from. The outdoor area has fire pits, and the tables and chairs are spaced out nicely so you don’t feel cramped. The staff are friendly and professional, happy to recommend dishes, and the food comes out at a reasonable pace.
The total bill came to $72 for one pork cutlet and three fried shrimp—not the best value for money. On the bright side, parking right outside the restaurant is super convenient!
