The Best Restaurants on Arthur Avenue, the Little Italy of the Bronx | Eater NY

"Founded in 1912, Egidio has been a neighborhood hangout for more than a century, drawing demitasses of coffee and plating classic Neapolitan pastries for customers who love to linger. Vast pastry cases contain cannoli, eclairs, layer cakes, butter cookies, and biscotti, and the staff will be glad to make suggestions. Particularly recommended is the ricotta-filled sfogliatelle, a variation on lobster tale filled with semolina and ricotta and studded with preserved orange rind, as well as the rainbow cookies and leaf-shaped ones glazed with chocolate." - Missy Frederick

A Taste of Heaven I recently had the pleasure of indulging in an assortment of Italian pastries, and I must say, it was a truly unforgettable experience. From the crispy, flaky shells to the creamy, sweet fillings, each pastry was a masterclass in texture and flavor. *Cannoli: A Classic Redefined* The cannoli was a standout for me. The shell was perfectly fried, with a satisfying crunch that gave way to a creamy, sweet ricotta filling. The filling was infused with just the right amount of sweat cream and green coconut flakes, adding depth and complexity to the classic Sicilian dessert. *Sfogliatelle: A Shell-Shaped Delight* The sfogliatelle was another highlight. The shell was crispy and flaky, with a delicate, lacy texture that shattered in my mouth. The filling was a sweet, creamy ricotta mixture *Tiramisù: A Coffee-Lover's Dream* The tiramisù was a decadent, creamy delight. The ladyfingers were soaked in just the right amount of espresso , adding a rich, depthful flavor to the dessert. The mascarpone cream was light and airy, with a subtle sweetness that balanced perfectly with the bold flavors of the espresso *Conclusion* Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with the Italian pastries I tried. Each dessert was a masterclass in texture and flavor, with a clear attention to detail and a deep understanding of traditional Italian pastry-making techniques. Whether you're a fan of classic cannoli or decadent tiramisù, these pastries are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Rating: 5/5 stars

I’ve been coming to this bakery since I was a little girl, and it’s truly a staple in my life. My mother would take my siblings and I to pick out our favorite pastries, and we’d head across the street to the park to enjoy them. 36 years later, it’s amazing to see that everything still tastes the same and looks the same—there’s something so comforting and nostalgic about that consistency. This bakery is a gem in Little Italy, and it’s hands down my favorite spot in the neighborhood. Whether you’re a longtime customer or a first-timer, you’ll fall in love with the timeless quality and charm that makes this place special. The customer service is what keeps me going too. I love how welcoming the ladies are here.

Coffee dessert was good. Nice quaint place Great customer service

Google
Very disappointing. The pastries were soso. One was hard, didn’t seem fresh. Fillings were soso. Wasn’t worth finishing. Ordered a cappuccino it was lukewarm, but delicious. The rhum pastry tasted like watered down rum. Looks are deceiving. :/ I wouldn’t go out of my way to stop here.

Google
Egidio Pastry Shop 622 E. 187th. St. Bronx, NY 10458 Chocolate Mousse Made with chocolate cream and chocolate hazelnut bread, the cookie crumbles added a nice touch because it gave it that slight crunch. It has a smooth creamy taste, but my only critique is that I prefer to have this type of dessert chilled. There is an adequate amount of table seating, but it is tight.

Google
Great service - even if it seems a bit chaotic they take care of everyone with love and a bit of NY attitude. My kind of place! The cookies are all fresh and delicious but came here for rainbow cookies or ‘tri-colors’ and they didn’t disappoint! I started with three and ending up getting 10 more to go share with the family.

Google
It was all delicious, if more Viennese in style than pastries I've enjoyed in pasticcerie of the (northern Italian) Veneto region. We selected an eye- and palate-pleasing assortment to bring to native Italian friends who live upstate. The counterperson was patient and friendly, and made a tasteful arrangement of the sweets in our carryout box. The place is old but clean.

Google
This such a great place to stop and grab a hot chocolate, a coffee and some pastries during the holidays. The service is great and the atmosphere amazing. The workers are so nice and polite. Me and my family had such a nice time.

Yelp
First visit at this establishment. Egidio's Pastry Shop display case has so many choices for you. There's 10 to 12 tables to dine in if you like. Sit at the tables and place your order. The pastries I ordered tasted ok.

Yelp
Egídio has been on Arthur Avenue for 113 years, 1/3 of the time I have been here. Visiting Carmela here is like coming home and seeing family! The baked goods are so fresh and delicious, there is nothing like it. The most difficult part of coming here is deciding what to eat will it be a regular cannoli, chocolate covered cannoli, white chocolate cannoli, cannoli gelato, or even a cannoli cake? We can't go wrong with anything but unfortunately, we always overdo it.
google avatar

Mike U.

Yelp
Just awesome pastries! First time here in over 5 years and now they have gelato as well as pastries. Good service in an old fashion Italian pastry shop. Just a great place for tasty and fresh pastries. Wish Carmella the owner would open up a place in South Florida.

Yelp
Delicious baked goods here. I had a coffee and a cannoli. The owner is really nice and was good with recommendations. I love places like this!

Yelp
Such a cute pastry shop! There is a very big selection of pastries and coffee and theres plenty of seating. The Sicilian was good but the tiramisu was incredible. It was so light and creamy and had the perfect balance of espresso to sweetness. The staff was helpful with suggestions and service was very quick! Absolutely recommend

Yelp
Egidio Pastry Shop is an Italian pastry bakery that opened in the Bronx's "Little Italy" in 1912. It was founded by Italian immigrant Pasquale Egidio. Raised in the Southern Italian city of Salerno (where his parents owned a café), Egidio came to New York City in 1909 at the age of 22. He was accompanied by his wife Carmela and their two young children. After persuading a wealthy uncle to stake him, Egidio secured a small storefront on East 187th Street in the Bronx and his family moved into the apartment upstairs. At first he only served coffee and simple pastries like his parents had in Salerno. When the business took off, Egidio installed an oven so he could produce fancier pastries such as struffoli, quaresimali, and sfogliatelle. The Egidios ultimately had eight children and they all worked in the shop. None of them loved it the way their daughter Antonetta did; she would later go by "Annie". She worked in the shop for over 50 years and would have worked there longer had her brother not sold it to David Palazzo (one of the bakers) in 1982. He in turn sold it to local professor Paolo Palombo and his wife Carmela Lucciola in 1987. The couple later divorced, but Carmela still owns the shop to this day. She remodeled the shop in 2003 and continues to use Mr. Egidio's original recipes. My family and I recently stopped at Egidio's for some dessert. We went to the Bronx Zoo for the day and afterwards we had dinner on Arthur Avenue. We decided to head to Egidio's for dessert when we heard that they were the oldest pastry shop in Little Italy. The shop smelled great, was very clean, and had a huge selection of pastries and coffee. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My wife and I ordered and shared some cannoli (both plain and chocolate-dipped) while our son ordered a mini éclair. We were all happy with our choices. If you're looking for an authentic old-school Italian pastry shop then look no further than Egidio's!

Yelp
Came here with a group and thought the place was decent. Customer service was great but some pastries were great and some were not. The Napoleon wasn't good at all as it didnt resemble anything like a napoleon.
google avatar

Yelp
This pasty place sold stale and dried out and expired rainbow cookies to me at 38.00 lb. The owner refused to exchange, or refund, yelling and defending her selling me stale dried out expired cookies, she kept yelling, "you saw it, already. you saw it!". Whatever that means I "saw it". I got ripped off by this place, and it doesn't feel good.

Yelp
When I visit NY this bakery is always on my itinerary. I am always carting a bunch of pastry and cookies home with me from my visits here and the owner and staff have always been extremely nice. Not sure what some of these other reviews are talking about! One day I hope to be in town when the owner is giving a pastry class which she does do from time to time for the public. Relax order a cappuccino and enjoy some scrumptious desserts!

Yelp
Rather than have Saturday dinner at a restaurant like we've been doing since the start of our kitchen reno, my mom invited us over for a good ol' Dominican dinner. Needed dessert though. It's easy for me to head to the same old Zaro's in Parkchester for a few sweets- decided against it. Family-run Italian bakery- Egidio in the Belmont section of Little Italy in The BX, made the cut when my non-Yelp husband tried his luck at getting dessert. Major win. It smells wonderful inside. It's cozy. It's warm. There are rows of Sfoglietelle, Biscottis, Napoleons, cakes, etc- but came with a mission to get 3 cake slices. Noticed a Chocolate Mousse but I always have this fear of disappointment of buying a stale, brown stuff people call Mousse. Not here. Service is nice and price is too. My Mom enjoyed her pumpkin-glazed Cheesecake, hubs enjoyed his Berry/ crumbly-topped/custardy slice and I wished I had a second Chocolate Mousse slice. Their Chocolate Mousse is a Bronx masterpiece: devil's chocolate cake base is moist- like you could really tell it's made the day of and not the day before or worse- 2 days before then sits on the shelf. The Mousse isn't a terrine-type but held its own perfectly as a 'regular sliced' piece and the dark chocolate came through very nice. Little Italy in The BX has a lot of nice Italian bakeries, but never has there been a bakery that's made me want to dive head first into a few Chocolate Mousse slices (or a whole Mousse cake) like the one here.

Yelp
Great selection of pastries & coffee. Very friendly people. Great little spot on Arthur Ave.

Yelp
Today we had a great pastry called "maritozzo". The owner Carmela was happy to make it for us since she doesn't usually make it. It was so delicious and fresh

Yelp
Old fashioned Italian bakery. What's not to love? Took some chocolate covered cannoli to go. Then some rum soaked custard filled pastry. Easy grab and go traditional Italian bakery.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely better then some in the area. But it's a great feel for the Italian heritage.. cmon stop by and grab a pastries and look into the the shop for a few goodies.. they have everything you could imagine!!! The owner was very sweet woman as well very welcoming

Yelp
We were referred to Egidios by family whom have been visiting this spot for their Cartoccis (fried dough filled with cannoli cream), supposedly the only pastry shop on Arthur Ave to sell them. Egidios claims to be the oldest pastry shop on Arthur Ave... the service was exceptional, the staff was extremely patient while I overwhelmingly placed my in-store and to-go orders. We sat down for a cappuccino and some cookies while we debated what to bring home; the cappuccino was warm and delicious. The cookies and pastries we brought home were enjoyed by all. They delicately pack the boxes and top them off with red and white twine. It will be hard visiting a different pastry shop on Arthur Ave as we were blown away by the kind service and tasty treats from Egidios.

Yelp
My favorite bakery. They have the best cappuccino and if you go ask for a quaresimale. Flashback to my grandmothers kitchen Friendly staff great pastry display and ny sports memorabilia on the walls.

David G.

Yelp
Really time to pack it in and call it a day. What i was served as a "double espresso" was really quite deplorable. Shut the door ,take a month long trip to Italy or close for good. Not even trying!
google avatar

Pepper L.

Yelp
This place is very expensive, a piece of cake, cappuccino and two croissants were $16. The desserts are good, whatever I've tried, and they put real whipped cream in the drinks if you ask for it, nice place to sit, friendly servers. Supposed to have been here since 1912.
google avatar

howie g.

Yelp
Place is a complete ripoff. Mediocre pastry's at absurd prices. $45.00 a pound for rainbow cookies!! There are way better pastry places on arthur ave.

Robert K.

Yelp
Very disappointing. Pastries that are hard with little or no taste. Been going to Arthur Ave for 59 years. No excuse other than overcharging foe mediocrity.
google avatar

Carl W.

Yelp
My daughter brought home about 1 1/2 pounds of almond biscotti from Egidio. It was rock hard with almonds that were near rancid. Completely inedible. I left a message for the owner and never heard back. Really disappointing, especially for what is a very simple Italian bakery staple. If they cannot get this right, I'm not sure if anything else can be reliably made.

Yelp
I used to work here & it was by far the worst ever experience for a first time job. The owner of the shop abused me verbally & used me because she knew I was the youngest working for her & because I was trying to make money to help my mother. She fired me without telling me & she didn't even pay me for the last weeks I was working there, she also didn't pay me when I was "training" for two whole weeks. She would yell at me & embarrass me in front of customers which was very humiliating to me when all I was trying to do was my job. She's just overall rude. She grabbed my arm really tightly , she used to curse at me a lot. I was only there for 3 months & it was the worst three months. There's rats in the back & they get into the cakes & there's huge roaches. I do NOT recommend eating there. The owners name is Carmela. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. She didn't pay me or the other employees in time. She's racist & money hungry the prices changed every day while I was working there which was hard for me because I thought it was one price then she'd get mad & call me stupid & then tell me it's a different price. If I were you I wouldn't support this business.. Please spread the word guys

Yelp
Found in 1912, this is the oldest bakery in Bronx's Little Italy. The cappuccino and cannoli were great. The sfagliottelle wasn't the best. The dough could have been flakier and the ricotta filling was a bit underwhelming. Service was excellent, the girl at the counter was very sweet and helpful. Staff was wearing masks properly. There are four small tables available outside.

Yelp
After completing our occasional foodie journey of Arther Ave, we decided to have an espresso. On 187th we found Egidio's. The sign says "since 1912", and if they've survived this long I just knew theses guys must be good. I had a double espresso which was definitely a no nonsense expresso, as an espresso drinker for over 35 years I kind of know what a good espresso is and this spot came through like a bolt of lightening. It was fresh, piping hot and served in an espresso cup and saucer. While I didn't try the pastries, I was seated across from the counter and I could see everything was fresh ... and I even saw the bakers continue to bring fresh cookies out. All in all this is a clean and relaxing spot and if you're into having a good espresso you definitely need to try this place.

Mary Ann S.

Yelp
I order 6 pastries and two coffees and paid for them. I then ordered two pastries to eat at table. As i I was leaving owner said I did not pay for the two pastries I ate at the table. I asked how many pastries did I pay for. she replied I'm not trying to rob you. I think I have the right to know what I paid for. the three workers behind the counter was trying to figure out what I paid for and speaking among themselves in Spanish. I took her word for it and ended up paying for the two patries I ate the table but it turns out when I got home there was only 4 in the box. so I guess you did rob me. owner was rude and the pastries were over priced. I would not recommend going there.

Jim T.

Yelp
Went here last night after dinner with friends, we cannoli's sfogliatellas & cappuccino'. they were just ok, but we also purchased a bunch of other things to bring home. we wanted to pay for everything then. the staff said we couldn't table serve was separate, Ok, so that what we did. While we were sitting there, the old lady running the place (or the owner) told us "Don't leave until you pay for that" WTF?! Are you kidding lady ? We didn't have ANY intention of doing that We even said to your girls behind the counter that we would like to pay for this NOW. I will never go here or recommend this place again. The cranky old woman was rude, & obnoxious, besides the pastries weren't good enough to come back for anyway. I'm sticking to Arturo's down the street. Egidio's SUCK 1 out of 10
google avatar

Yelp
Egidio Pastry Shop was a lovely little stop where I sampled their rainbow cookies. Rainbow cookies were originally an Italian confection but became a staple of New York City. It can be difficult to find them elsewhere. If you don't know rainbow cookies or tricolore cookies they are 3 layers of brightly colored, almond flavored sponge cake, layered with raspberry or apricot jam and an outer coating of chocolate. They are all over the place but only some of them are great. The ones at Egidio Pastry Shop were good but not great. Nice and sweet and slightly firm which is good. I felt the almond flavor was slightly lacking and I didn't get a lot of chocolate flavor either. A lot of the pastries in the shop looked nice. I would have liked to sample some of the other pastries but we were short on time. It will give me a reason to go back!
google avatar

Harrison N.

Yelp
The older lady in charge was a nasty piece of work. She insulted my friend about his weight. First and last visit.

Canvas S.

Yelp
The experience here definitely could've been better. The manager made some toxic and passive aggressive comments towards myself and to other customers, which might have been acceptable decades ago, but is certainly not appropriate in this day and age. I'm still baffled by the fact that the manager said "what else do you want now?" to a happily paying customer. Shouldn't you want your customers to buy more of your products and spend more money at your store? My friend ordered two boxes and was satisfied with the pastries. But due to the poor customer experience, I will not bring any other friends to patronize this bakery. I will recommend Artuso's instead.
google avatar

Mike A.

Yelp
Great canolis. Tried my first white chocolate one here. Very friendly staff. Had a great selection of cakes cookies and pastry.

Melissa M.

Yelp
This is a real old style Italian bakery that you look for when you are coming to Arthur avenue and the Bronx little Italy. I came in here by chance looking for pastries for saint Joseph's day and they were some of the best I've ever had, super fresh and full of flavor. The pastries I was looking for are sfingi and zeppole one filled with custard and the other filled with a cannoli cream with candied fruit on top of it and I saw then as soon as I came in the store and got very exited because they looked so good! You can also sit down in the bakery they have some tables great for a nice afternoon with a pastry and a cup of coffee. I brought the pastries back to Brooklyn with me to my family and they can't wait to have them again definitely worth making the trip up to the Bronx for!!!
google avatar

Pamela M.

Yelp
I wouldn't know what a 3 stars bakery review means. It's a bakery, pastries look amazing. I ordered double shot of espresso and decaf. I absolutely when my coffee is hot( very rare in most American restaurants) and here's the bonus, my creamer was hot too. I'm sold right there. Decor looks like the traditional bakeries back in the day. Of course, you don't come here for the decor. Funny enough, I didn't see any bread but who cares when you can devour a cannoli or my favorite Italian cookies with the chocolate on the top. I'm in heaven.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Charming neighborhood bakery for over 100 years. Nice place to sit and relax off the main drag of little Italy
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Just had dessert here after first checking out the neighboring pastry shops which all looked dingy inside, in comparison. We were unimpressed. First of all, a large cannoli is $4.95! And the cream wasn't creamy or fresh. I'll attach a pic. Three people- one had a cappuccino, one water, 2 large pastries, 1 small and the bill came to $21.20. Absurd and not worth the price or calories.
google avatar

Josh V.

Yelp
Don't really get this place. Sat down for a coffee and pastry with my wife. All of a sudden regaton was blasting on the speakers. Napoleon cake was entirely filled with whipped cream. No layering, no pastry cream. Hard top and bottom. Espresso was ok... Also no prices for drinks listed and additional charge on pastries for sitting down...
google avatar

Yelp
An old style Italian bakery/café in the Belmont "Little Italy" section of the Bronx. Places like this are getting scarce as businesses are squeezed by high rents and rising food costs. It's important to keep mom & pop stores like Egidio going because they are the soul of the neighborhood. I grew up next to Manhattan's Little Italy and it was painful to see all the family owned stores disappear as the older generations retire and their children refuse to take on the burden of hard work that their parents put into the business. Seeing such a quaint establishment, we couldn't help but stop in on an early Saturday morning. A sign in the window offered a croissant and coffee for $2.50, so how can you say no? We pulled up to one of the 7 tables inside and ordered 2 specials. The croissant was light & flaky with a perfectly sweet glaze without being too buttery and the coffee served piping hot in a huge mug. While sipping our java, we checked out the display cases and decided to get a pound of cookies to go. A little pricey at $18-$20 per pound, but it was worth a try. Their sign says they've been at the location since 1912 and I wish them well for another 100 years.
google avatar

Anton T.

Yelp
Very cute pastry shop, almost 110 years old. The Sfoliatelle were very good. A bit pricey but you come here for the history as well as the good pastries.
google avatar

Joan W.

Yelp
This is by far the best Italian pastry shop I've been to. The cookies are flavorful and fresh. Best cannoli I have ever had. They are filled with custard. The biscotti are delicious. All flavors. I live in the Jersey shore area, Red Bank, and the local bakeries are disappointing. (Except for Del Ponte in Bradley beach, but that's another review.). The espresso is first rate, and cappuccino the best. Comes with fresh whipped cream if you choose. I haven't tried the cheesecake, but it appears to be the old New York ricotta, dry, not too sweet, unlike the gummy cream cheese variety you get most places. Worth a trip to Arthur Avenue.
google avatar

Herald U.

Yelp
It's a little cozy spot with pastries as good as anything around. The place might be a little too small and the staff a bit young (neighborhood girls) and too calm( not really dependent on tips). It's just that kind of casual spot where you can't be in a rush and you can't expect any sort of special service. The cake and a hot coco were great.
google avatar

Gina S.

Yelp
This place was a big disappointment the only thing I'll Ever get from This place is coffee, pastries went down hill!!!!

Pat I.

Yelp
I don't write many reviews , but I know sfogliatelle (both in Italy and the NYC area). My sfogliatella looked fine. The problem is it didn't have much taste. I will forgive the fact that they were soggy not crunchy. Everyone has a bad day. But the lack of flavor is an issue. My daughter goes to school nearby, so I will continue looking for a good sfogliatella in the neighborhood. There are lots of Italian bakeries around Arthur Ave. One of them must make first class sfogliatelle. In the meantime I'm going to stick with Tasty Pastry on 13th Ave. in Brooklyn.
google avatar

Elmo G.

Yelp
This place is a place that the owner doesn't hesitate to rip his/her costumers off. They buy frozen tiramisu from Costco for a penny and sell it for dollars. Their pastry taste like wet sweet papers!!!
google avatar

Anthony G.

Yelp
So so little bakery/ cafe in the Bronx near Arthur Ave has a good selection of cakes, cookies, coffees and the such. Tried a piece of the tiramisù which was just okay. It was a bit too wet on the bottom for me. I guess they add rum or some liquor to make it moist (I know, I hate that word too) but possibly they put a tad too much. Cannoli are just okay as well. Counter service was a bit rushed and prices are slightly steep. Not my favorite bakery but they do have seating which is a plus.
google avatar

Tommy E.

Yelp
Owner Carmela, as always, treated my tour group of 42 like family on our visit April 30, 2017. Not only does her manor scream welcome!, she actually engages everyone like an equal. Her personal demonstration to our group of how the cannolis are baked and filled is always a memorable experience. Our tour group will be talking about this unexpected experience until they return next year for another round of calories! Thank you Carmela and Egidio!
google avatar

Kristy R.

Yelp
Egidio has been part of my family for years. For generations, relatives of mine have stopped by to grab cookies and pastries to bring home for the holidays. Other times they would stop in for a cup of coffee and a cannoli. I finally ended up here and was blown away by the assortment of sweets they had to offer. The cannolis came in chocolate or regular, full-size or mini. The flan was the best flan I have ever tasted. Perfect consistency. The horn was also very good and filled with a delicious custard. Staff is friendly and quick since they are always packed. $10 plastic minimum but you'll easily hit that if you're bringing the goods home.
google avatar

Giovanni T.

Yelp
This is our go to for the freshest pastries this place has been serving up the best cannoli and cookies.. Cheescakes etc.. I love this place very amazing and unique great coffees/espressos/latte you can ever put your lips to Keep up the wonderful work
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Went in to buy pastries and picked out what I wanted in the showcase. The pastries were old and sour and were unedible. Tried calling to speak to the owner and got the run around until I finally gave up trying. The owner should be ashamed of herself. There are way too many other choices in that area.
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
This place gave me FOOD POISONING!!! Never buy from them! They sold me pastries that were not properly refrigerated. After wrapping up my selection the wait person casually mentioned that they were having a problem with their refrigeration so the pastries were still frozen and just needed an hour to thaw. I asked if they were still OK to eat and she said yes. 3 days later I still feel sick. To add insult to injury even after admitting that I should not have been sold the pastries, the manager refused to refund my money, which is the least she should do!
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
The legendary Egidio Pastry Shop has been around since 1912! Located in the heart of Bronx Little Italy. Great Italian pastries, cakes, and canolis. A big selection. I love the original old-time neon sign outside, not much neon left these days.
google avatar

Nadine G.

Yelp
This place overcharges using "table tax" as a reason. Service was poor (dare I say rude and a bit aggressive) and the pastries and coffees were not great. I don't like Starbucks but if given a choice between this place and Starbucks....I'd choose Starbucks every time.
