Most plates are priced under $12 and come with potatoes and refried beans. Pancakes, molletes, tortas, burritos and sopes also make the menu. Don’t forget a cup of spiced, citrusy café de olla." - Ligaya Malones

Where to Eat in Barrio Logan - Eater San Diego

"Traditional Mexican breakfast and lunch items are the specialty at this new incarnation of Logan Avenue’s beloved trolley-turned-kitchen. Stop in for the chilaquiles, available with your choice of and protein or one of five salsas, or a torta stuffed with milanesa. As a project from the minds of Por Vida owners Milo Lorenzana and Carolina Santana, coffee makes its mandatory appearance in the shop’s fragrant cafe de olla." - Mario A. Cortez

Google
The chilaquiles were SOO good. Crunchy, not soggy and really tasty. They only have Cafe de Olla, but it was delicious. The egg was cooked to perfection, exactly how I had asked them to. The service was great too, they were very friendly. The place is pretty, and they have free water for you to serve yourself as much as you want. Also, the coffee has free refills !! Definitely coming back to this place to try the rest of their menu! Thank you guys !

Google
Food is stellar. You can smell it all the way down the block and can’t help but stop in! Not a huge vegetarian selection but they have soyriso and quesadillas. You can tell everything is made from scratch. The tortillas are SO GOOD. The service was 10/10. Friendly, welcoming and helpful. Huge seating area in the back and a smaller section up front.

Google
I can only attest to the La Frontera Torta. Asada was decent but the chicken was lacking in flavor, the torta as a whole was underwhelming. Four of us tried two separate tortas, both La frontera but one without cheese. All of us were veryy hungry, and we did not finish either one. The most disgusting part was the guac, it had a sour tang(spoiled) and there was green food coloring!! Que vergüenza.

Google
This place is very simple, what you would expect from a taco shop but unlike most taco shops the food does stand out. I've only had their breakfast but it very good and seemed very fresh, I'll definitely go back to try other items on their menu.

Google
Convenient location, we did not struggle to find parking. You order at the counter before sitting down. Walked in with high such anticipation to try their cafe de olla. Just to be disappointed, it was super sweet and overall did not taste like cafe de la olla. If you have a sweet palate then you’ll probably enjoy it more. The coffee was brought out along with two creamers per cup. They use disposable plates and cups which was a bit of a disappointment as well. Nobody checked on our table after food was delivered. We had the Frida chilaquiles and the Chicano chilaquiles. They were both ok, one had carne asada which was well seasoned. We asked for an over hard egg on top but unfortunately it arrived runny. The atmosphere was my favorite, whimsical and cute with plenty of picture opportunities.

Google
Ordered the enchiladas, coffee piloncillo and it was amazing. Everything is authentic and freshly made!! Got horchata as well and it's so yummy and fresh! Free refills on the aguas frescas and the ladies here are sweet and very helpful if you have any questions. Eating this food is a MUST so please stop by and support this mom and pop establishment 💯

Google
Great spot with delicious Mexican food. Come for brunch on the sunny street patio or in the shaded back patio. The bathrooms are always clean. Real good values for 3 tacos and a drink, the chilaquiles are delicious and the tostadas just like grandma used to make. The horchata tastes great. The refried beans are so good, the tortillas, the eggs, the sauces and salsas on point. Please never change!

Google
Stopped in here for a late breakfast on the way home from the airport. Everybody was very friendly and the food was great. I got a small Menudo and it was delicious. Family got some burritos and they love them. You get one free refill on the aqua Fresca, not something I usually see.

Yelp
This place is so cute, the first building is trolley car, that used to run up and down the street in that neighborhood before all were removed. The history about the restaurant and the owners is magical. You feel like you're a part of history cherishing those that came before you. You stand in line and order and they bring everything to you. I love the menu and the play on words. I was sold on getting the Chilla Killaz, called La Chicana, but changed my mind for the tostada with black beans, cotija, pickled onions, sour cream with a very simple garnish. I opted for the mimosa flight.

Yelp
This was a hard rating to decide. I debated between 3 and 4 stars. I just couldn't get over the amount paid for a burrito and the portion size. Especially in Barrio Logan with soooo many excellent alternatives in every direction. Flavor-wise it was delicious, but it cost over $16 for what I would call a petite or kids size burrito. It did come with a small handful of fresh tortilla chips and 2 tiny sides of red and green salsa. No salsa bar with any other condiments or salsa. The decor was really cool, they had a nice seating area in the back and a ton of tables in the sidewalk. It's located in the heart of the revitalized part of Logan Ave. Service was fast and friendly. You order and pay at the register and they bring the food out to you. They have a small bathroom hidden around the corner. Everything was very clean as well. Parking on the weekends is a little hard to find.

Yelp
We can here with our dog and sat outside. The place is very dog friendly and the servers are wonderful. I took a peek inside the garden patio. And it did not disappoint. They have a couple tvs back there and it's pretty large. The food was really good! The carnitas were juicy. The beans were super creamy too. Lovely place and I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Came back for the same breakfast that was unbeatable before to find that it had changed. You now only get one egg instead of two & the sauces had also changed since last time & not for the better. Don't get me wrong, the food was still good but not as good as our initial visit. Bummer.

Yelp
Not my favorite spot for mexican. I ordered the grilled chicken enchiladas. Presentation was great but honestly I thought the dish itself was pretty dry, even with the salsa verde and sour cream drizzle. The ceviche also could have used an extra tostada to balance out the ratio. I liked that water cups were available and the service wasn't super slow. The inside was pretty warm but luckily they have outside seating as well (unfortunately angled due to the pavement, so a bit uncomfortable).

Yelp
We had breakfast El Carrito which part of it is an old train cart!. The Chilaquiles were soo dang good! Actually the whole dish was!. We had the Cafe de olla with our breakfast all hitting just right!. The ambience was nice and bright in the back patio area a lot of art even seen some are from one of our Coachella Valley artist. The service was good . Definitely coming back when in the area!.

Yelp
We came here because we wanted tacos and Salud had closed down on us. We saw the reviews were decent so decided to check it out. It seems like a tiny place but they have seating in the patio inside and that area is actually very nice! They have created an outdoor garden space, which feels airy and big as compared to the inside space. You order at the counter and then choose a table. We ordered 3 tacos - the asada, the chorizo and the fish. The tacos were good...not as good as Salud (which is/was my favorite) but pretty good. The chorizo was the best followed by the fish and then the asada. The side of Spanish rice was very good. The beans were fine. The salsas were good! All in all, this was a surprisingly good experience.

Logan S.

Yelp
Chilaquiles here reign supreme. However, the house coffee might steal the show. The staff is so friendly and we love the atmosphere. Cool patio vibe in the back. Love the place so much!

Yelp
I LOVE this spot but I HATE this plate with a passion! I feel like I'm eating a kids cafeteria lunch for $16 is crazy work. If it portion control you are worried about then just incorporate that onto the old plate! GIVE ME MY PLATE LOL
google avatar

Babs R.

Yelp
I love El Carrito with all my heart! It's a tradition for me and my family to walk over and eat breakfast here every weekend. The owner is the nicest person ever with the best mustache ever and it is so clear he's passionate about what he does!
google avatar

Yelp
Went here for breakfast on a recent trip to SD. Loved everything about this place. The service was great as the, the patio was really nice. The food was delicious, we had the sopes and chilaquiles and cafe de olla.
google avatar

Jamilett A.

Yelp
Food is from 1-6 a solid 6 It's missing that taste that feels authentic. Service good because you order at counter sit outside and wait to be served. Drinks I can speak for the Green Juice, more like green sugar. Not good at all.
google avatar

Daniella S.

Yelp
Make sure to check out the back patio full of art and so spacious. Great music playing seating inside and outside as well. I got a Michelada which was great the perfect amount of spice. Didn't get a chance to try the food but will be back.

Yelp
I was in the area around lunch time and this shop was the only restaurant open on the street that seemed appetizing. I was the only person in there, almost at 3pm, so I was attended to immediately. I placed my order at the cashier, the young lady taking my order recommended the el jefe. Shoutout to her because the burrito was delicious! I was starved but luckily the service was super quick! I don't even think it took longer than 5 minutes. I sat in the back area which was spacious and covered so it wasn't too sunny, thank goodness because the San Diego sun in the summer is a doozy! I didn't particularly like the loud banda music playing but expected from a Mexican restaurant. The one complaint I had is that the bathroom door could not open, there's no handle so it is tricky. But overall, I will be back!

Brenda P.

Yelp
First time trying this restaurant. It is over priced for what you get. Beware, apparently eggs plural means one egg at this place. You have to order at the counter and find your own table which was dirty and sticky. Your food is served in paper cafeteria plates. Our family of 7 had breakfast here and paid as much as any other sit down breakfast place with the exception that you must order at the counter. My kids wouldn't eat the pancakes. They were gross with a huge pat of fake butter on top that wouldn't melt. We all left disappointed and still hungry. Won't be coming back.

Yelp
Could no longer find good Chilaquiles's in Eastlake, decided to venture out. El Carrito in Logan was the answer. The restaurant is bigger than view. The interior is a nice and modern looking patio. But the FOOD!! Amazing. The chilaquiles were cooked to perfection. They stayed crunchy. The sauces were great and fresh. The potato's were cooked with chorizo oil or flavor which enhanced the flavor. Beans, simple and perfect. We will be going again today with more family. 5 Star.

Yelp
A small trolley car diner in the heart of Barrio Logan was refurbished by new ownership. There were five tables inside for seating and another three tables outside on the sidewalk. Breakfast and lunch were served throughout the operating hours of 8 am to 3 pm on Monday to Thursday and 8 am to 5:30 pm on Friday to Sunday. Parking on Logan Avenue was all curbside. A burrito was my initial thought when I came during a lunch hour. After scouring the menu, I switched to the steak and huevos which was going to be a little lighter than a burrito. The dish came with refried beans, potatoes, and a tortilla. The tortilla was very fresh and soft which made a difference in how quickly I was able to finish the meal. The prices were similar to the nearby competition on the same street. The reopening of this diner was a welcome addition to the growing selection of eating and drinking establishments in this neighborhood. I would return if they expanded the business hours to include dinner service.

Yelp

Yelp
My husband and I stopped by while out shopping in the area and we both were pleasantly surprised! Customer service was 10/10, food was authentic and delicious. and restaurant was giving a whole vibe! Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Such a good spot for a quick bit and the prices are affordable. Service is great! Anytime I'm in the area we always come by here for good food and great ambiance.

Yelp
Chill and quiet place to come and eat breakfast Always good and fresh, always friendly

Yelp
Food is delicious. I had chilaquiles divorciados-- chips were crispy, eggs perfectly runny but not undercooked, sauces a bit spicy and full of flavor, beans tasted like Peruvian not pinto but were creamy. A little pricey for breakfast, but quality matched price and The "building", a former trolley, is so unique that alone is worth the visit. Service was great and we were impressed they did so much in their small working area.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is exceptional. Great service. I love the ambiance of the neighborhood and inside the restaurant. Este lugar es excepcional. Por favor, pasa y pruébalo tú mismo.

Yelp
My friends and I came across this place during our SD trip. Definitely recommend trying if you're into classical Mexican breakfast cuisines. The chicken burrito that I ordered was delicious and the salsas were spicy but added to the flavor! Will definitely have to stop by here the next time we visit :)
google avatar

Marjorie M.

Yelp
Food is delicious and the spot is really cool. You enter and think it's super tiny, but they have a cool back patio with more tables. Nice people and really fast service. Great breakfast spot! Chilaquiles are better than cocina 34!
google avatar

Griselda F.

Yelp
I can honestly say this is one of the the best Mexican food places I've been to here in San Diego. The flavors were authentic, rich & flavorful! The sauces were so robust & tasty, they have 7 different sauces to choose from for their Chilaquiles & each one is just as tasty as the last. They will let you sample if you're undecided on which to choose. I tried a favorite called the divorciado which is two sauces divided by carne asada and to say the sauces are addicting is an understatement! We also had a Carnitas burrito & it was Delicious! The carnitas were cooked & seasoned perfectly. The service was so nice & welcoming! They greeted with a smile & were patient with us with all our questions LOL they even gave us little tastes of the different sauces to help us choose between all their delicious options! When you come in you first walk into to a classic cable car but there is more seating out back. I love the nostalgic feel all around, the back seating area is more of a patio area with plenty of natural light and little birds sneaking in for a treat!

Yelp
I've heard that El Carrito has really good breakfast food, so I finally tried it. I ordered the creamy poblano chilaquiles, and while it had a good base flavor, it was definitely lacking salt. My dad got the fish tacos and said the same thing-lacking salt. (Which isn't the worst thing because salt can always be added/whereas if it were too salty, it'd be a hard fix). The horchata was really good-definitely recommended! If you choose to sit inside and eat, just keep in mind if you're short, the tables might sit too high for you and be uncomfortable, like for me- I couldn't reach the footrest while sitting. The employees were all very nice. I'll come back again!

Yelp
I found this little hidden gem walking around the neighborhood of Logan Park. We strolled in and it was a bit busy but it wasn't too bad. They have tables outside, inside and in the back of the restaurant so there is plenty of room. Service was really good but they only engage with you when you first order and then anything else you would need to go get yourself. Apologies that I didn't take pictures as my phone was dead but this is what I ordered. Chilaquiles divorciados - 9/10 This plate came with 2 different sauces of chilaquiles. Red and green with a fried egg on top of both. It also came with beans and potatoes which were delicious! I added some carne asada on top which was a good move and I would totally recommend doing so. La frontera torta - 9/10 This was ordered by my cousin. She devoured this torta haha I had a piece and it was jam packed with flavor! Great taste on the asada and the chicken and a killer combo. El Jefe burrito. - 9/10 So we were going to Order the Santana burrito but they were out of shrimp so we decided to go for the el Jefe. This was delicious as well. Great seasoning on the steak and the burrito was a very good size. My fiancé only hate half because it was so filling. She really enjoyed this dish. Menudo - 0/10 Wish I can rate this plate but unfortunately it was never brought out to me. I ended up getting a refund for this dish but it looked and smelled delicious. Maybe next time! Micheladas - 6/10 I got a miche with Negra modelo and it was okay. Not the best miche I had but also not the worst. The mix was lacking flavor in my opinion and the candy stick they put on top tasted old. We got 3 miches for the table and they all agreed on the taste and the candy. Maybe we got a bad batch. But I would probably wait on these next time. Overall, the food here is super solid! Come Early as it looks like it will sell out. Thank you guys for a great breakfast'

Yelp
This was my first time here. I would say it has a nice cozy atmosphere. The decorations are nice, filled with art. They have both inside and outside, and partial outside seating. I say partial, because they have an open roof eating area inside. You get the feeling of eating in someone back yard. Not to the food. The Carne Asada Torta, was very delicious. The bread is toasted to a nice crispy outside, while having a generous buttery laired inside. The inside is filled with with what you expect from a torta. Such are meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and a little beans. The side of chips, had a nice herbal seasoning to them. Sopes, both the Pollo and Carne Asada sopes were good. The Pollo was very flavorful. The Carne, needed a little more seasoning. Coffee De Olla, this is an outstanding coffee. The taste is filled with orange peel, cinnamon, and piloncillo, if you don't know. Piloncillo is a type of brown cane sugar. So if you're diabetic or pre diabetic, be careful. Service is very minimal, due to the staff working multiple positions. Even the cook brings out the food. So expect to go to the counter for things you need. The seating is a little odd. Due to the way the buildings is set. You really cannot have a large group. Also, as you head to the back room. You notice the floor going up hill. So there are areas, where you are sitting taller than the person in front of you. This is a great place to eat, and fill yourself with some authentic Mexican food. After you can walk around the same block and visit many Latino shops.
google avatar

Yelp
Gonna add this place to the chilaquiles rotation. So good. They have 5 varieties of sauces and 5 or 6 choices of proteins.
google avatar

Dollyrose V.

Yelp
Been wanting to check out this place forever. Not too sure of it's history but it's the cutest place ever! The staff is friendly & fast. The food was great, like the kind NANA would make.

Cordoba ..

Yelp
Overpriced small portion food buy 2 things walk out with -$40. Save your time and money eat 2 $20 bills instead and you'll end up more satisfied that way.
google avatar

Aserrado M.

Yelp
Pretty good food. It was a nice day in Barrio Logan. There were street vendors that amplified the vibe, and lowriders cruising by. I had the Coronado, which was a slab of carne asada with easy-over eggs, frijoles, potatoes, and rice. My girl enjoyed the Logan Chilaquiles plate. She was full pretty fast so I 'had' to help her. The steak was a bit lemony, the rice was a little crunchy, and the chilaquiles a little too wet, but the overall flavor was pretty good. Cute little spot in a great location, and they are doing some good business. The restroom is around the back of the building if you need to go. Service was just ok. 4/5
google avatar

Roberto P.

Yelp
Stoped by on a sunday morning. Food was delicious, and I recommend the coffee. They play music all morning.
google avatar

Mandy F.

Yelp
Nice little place tucked away. Cafe de olla please. Yummy. Chilaquiles was on pretty good, served with house potatoes and beans. You can choose to add egg and meat. If your not super hungry I would say no to the eggs. I didn't finish it but everything else was really good. You get a choice of red or green sauce and I think each one will go with whatever your feeling like that day. Customer service was really good.
google avatar

Tony E.

Yelp
The bout side of the. Yielding is AWESOME! It's an old trolley rail car and way historic. The service was really good. They didn't have eggs and something else this morning so I tried something a little different than what I wanted. It was still good! No complaints but nothing to write home about, but will write to YELP. I will have to come back and try something else and hope that it takes them up. Price was decent. They DO give you utensils, salsa and the GOOD napkins. I was so hungry I didn't take a pic of the food!
google avatar

Erika V.

Yelp
Busy place. Sat in the back patio and enjoyed a nice brunch. Food was yummy. I had both red and green authentic chilaquiles. Employees were very kind and helpful.
google avatar

Juan G.

Yelp
El Carrito unfortunately lacks in the quality and overall flavor of its dishes. I order the La Frontera Torta and was disappointed. The Torta was half chicken and half carne asada. The Torta is very simple and lacking flavor. The chicken was decent but cold and the asada was fatty and had no flavor. I also order the chilaquiles bowl and again disappointed with the dish overall flavors. Food is also somewhat pricy for the food you get. Service is decent and nothing special. The restaurant is spacious and has both indoor and outdoor seating. Overall El Carrito does not give you anything that will make you want to come back.
google avatar

Heathe M.

Yelp
We took the trolley into Barrio Logan hoping to find some good Mexican food.OMG! It smelled good we both decided to order the Grilled chicken with avocado & tomato. We waited outside on the street patio. When or food arrived our torta's grilled chicken tasted like some gross animal, The torta bread was so soggy and a few broken pieces of chips on our tray and I'm not kidding. We couldn't believe the bill was $32. We were both so disappointed and grossed out. What a waste of money!

Angelica Q.

Yelp
I just left. The rice was really hard. The portions are small and it's overpriced. They don't even have regular plates anymore. The quality and flavor has really decreased. I'm super disappointed. It's not as good as it used to be at all. Sadly, I won't be returning.
google avatar

Gabrielle C.

Yelp
Had the chilaquiles divorciados, which was big enough for 2. I liked the green sauce and boyfriend liked the red. Chips were homemade and thick and super crispy. Delicious beans. Hibiscus agua fresca was good and free refills! There's a shaded patio in the back. The young guy at the counter was so friendly. Loved this place.
google avatar

Jane C.

Yelp
It is a cute restaurant by Logan height. I was drawn there by its fragrance of delicious foods after the art fest in the area. It has inner seating, patio in the back and outside sitting. The place may look small but it packed lots of spacing and especially food!! I ordered a breakfast plate, with eggs, but I saw someone ordered a omelette dish. And that look massive! I know I will return and ordered that in a near future. The service here is quick and painless!

Yelp
At El Carrito Cocina Mexicana In San Diego, CA Barrio Logan...!!! Our First Time Here. Hopefully It Is GOOD...???

Macarena O.

Yelp
My friend chose this place for her bday lunch and we all loved it. We were a big group but they have a lot of tables so we didn't have to wait to sit. They don't accept reservations so make sure you go early if you have a big group. To drink I got the (regular) michelada - they have some with gummies inside. To eat I got the Chicano chilakillers with fish (tilapia) and they were pretty good. One of my friends ordered torta and it look delicious- next time I'm ordering that for sure! Good price, nice service, great food - come try it yourself!
google avatar

Yelp
Sadly devoured our food before we took photos but we're here to say that we had some incredible food and great service! Went out for some good Mexican food on New Year's Day and were met with complimentary mimosas while we waited in line to order! We thought that was a little one-and-done special but the mimosas kept coming - on the house and before we could even ask for a refill. We ordered the Las Divorciados chilaquiles with carne asada - this is now the best chilaquiles I've ever had. 2nd best was at a little spot in TJ. In addition we also ordered the 3 tacos and beer combo with shrimp, carnitas and carne asada. The tacos were also incredible along with all the sauces, garnish and toppings. Food was incredible regardless of the free (and potent) mimosas..they were just the cherry on top! We finished our food and were lingering watching some college football in our phone and the owner came by to offer us another round of our beers on the house. The staff went above and beyond and the food was exactly what we were hoping for.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican eateries in the county. The chilaquiles are hands down a fave of mine but don't miss out on all their other breakfast dishes, tacos, burritos and wash it all down with an amazing Michelada.
google avatar

Jackie B.

Yelp
We love going to El Carrito. After eating here, I can't seem to order chilaquiles anywhere else. They absolutely have varieties of flavors to choose from. My go to is the Logan. I made the mistake of not adding a protein once but it was still good. Protein (except for eggs) are add ons. The chips are crunchy. I hate soggy chips with my chilaquiles. Their potatoes are mid but their beens are pretty fire. The seating inside is very small but I love that authentic look. They have a bigger seating in the inside courtyard but it doesn't have the street view. One of the many reason I enjoy eating here besides from their delicious chilaquiles is the feeling that I'm being transported to traveling to Mexico. On the weekends Logan is busy. Vendors, low riders, music, street cart foods, etc.... People also park on the middle street dividers on the weekends. I love the energy and the food here. We have kept coming back!
google avatar

Tyson C.

Yelp
Hard to find parking, but you are in the barrio, so try to park in the center of the road. Cute place. The restaurant is an old rail car from the 1920's. Little seating inside and in the back. A few tables out front as well. Staff is friendly and helpful. Food was terrific. Nice sized portions. Priced right for the amount of food. Kids menu has a few options and are very tasty. We came here on New Year's Day and they were offering complementary mimosas. Fun atmosphere in the front with music playing and people hanging out drinking adult beverages. Can have a line to order and a bit of a wait to get the food, but worth it. "I'll be back."

Yelp
Love the new patio!! Always great chilaquiles. The tortas are also really delicious especially la borracha.
