The 17 Best Hidden Gem Restaurants in Los Angeles

"Guatemalan cuisine rarely gets the spotlight in Los Angeles, even though the Central American country has a major demographic presence in Southern California. The Sixth and Bonnie Brae night market is the place to get incredible street food while this humble, but excellent strip mall restaurant highlights homestyle Guatemalan fare, including cheesy dobladas and carne guisada plates." - Eater Staff

The 20 Essential Hot Dogs in Los Angeles

"Guatemalan hot dogs, also called pan shucos, are popular street food items everywhere from the Sixth and Bonnie Brae night market to neighborhoods across LA. El Churrasco Chapin, a homestyle destination from Monica Ramos, offers a loaded pan shuco with griddled sliced wieners, guacamol (avocado spread), pickled cabbage, onions, and a mesmerizing striping of mustard, mayo, and ketchup." - Eater Staff

19 Incredible Places to Eat Central American Food in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"A newcomer to the Central-American enclave that sprawls along the border of Hollywood and East Hollywood between Santa Monica and Melrose, Monica Ramos’s Guatemalan grill and kitchen is making a name for her home cooking and shucos (Guatemalan hot dogs). Guatemalans come from all over to try the shucos, a formidable hot dog with sauerkraut, guacamol (avocado spread), large wieners, and thin squirts of ketchup, mayo, and mustard that’s the best in town. Ramos’s carne guisada, or beef in gravy, is rich and zesty. When on the menu, frijoles blancos, a tender pork and white beans with a tangy recado (stew) of tomatoes, chiles guaques, and seasonings is a must-try." - Bill Esparza

I missed the staff when they first opened they were a lot nicer. I’ve been here 3x (yesterday being the 3rd). The ladies working there didn’t make the experience any better. I had ordered three things off the menus. The 3rd item never arrived. I asked for water and the water never arrived either. There was no point in asking because they looked like they didn’t want to really attend anybody other than serving food and heading to the back leaving everyone unattended. I went to pay and mentioned that I never got my 3rd item, she was rude about it but ultimately didn’t charge for me for it. When she asked if I ordered drinks, clearly there was nothing else on our table other than food. The food is honestly not that bad but debatable because my stomach started hurting when I got home and is still hurting now, the next day. I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♀️ to each their own but the atmosphere is a lot different then when they first opened up.

Fresh food, great portions, good prices, excellent service! We came for Saturday around 11am and it was full inside but service was still pretty quick. Meat, eggs and homemade tortillas 🤤 Everything was prepared with care and you can taste the love that goes into the food.

I’m so glad I found this spot! Was in the area and hungry. I love Latin food so I decided to give this place a try. I couldn’t be more satisfied. The food is delicious and flavorful, and the service is top notch. Very welcoming staff. I’m definitely coming back again.

I would love to post this review in Spanish so the personnel at the eatery sees it. The glory of local hood dinning can be found right here at El Churrasco Chapin. This is your hood, cotner eatery. I ordered "Caldo de Gallina" almost as good as my Mom's, cuz... hey, no one had better cooking skills than my mom. Okay? Now that the record is straight, ha! I invite you to give this eatery a chance. Highlights: Tortillas hechas a mano...mh Restrooms ONLY for paying clientelle They take cards for an affordable $1 and service is personalized in which they do accomodate some requestsfriendly professional svce. As always I advise to be mindful of the challenges our California businesses have overcome. So. treat the place and people with TLC. and TIP well. ThANKS

Yelp
This is our second time coming here. It is a treat for us to come down here because we drive over two hours from San Diego. My boyfriend is Guatemalan so this food reminds him of his mom's cooking. The food is absolutely delicious and never disappoints. And the employees are very nice and attentive. I ordered the Chow Mein and it was my first time trying this dish and it was delicious I loved the chicken, noodles, carrots, and celery. I was surprised that it came with ketchup on the side. I tested a little bit on the side, it was not bad at all but I prefer it without it or some hot sauce. It has enough flavor! I also ordered the Strawberry Banana shake it was delicious, and it was a lot of food so I was very full after. They started us off with two bean tostadas that have crumbled cheese on top. It's simple but it's so delicious. I like these so much I ordered the tostadas that have one salasa, avocado, and black beans. They are so good I highly recommend them. We did order some coffee and the lady who helped us offered us refills which my bf happily accepted. My bf ordered the creamy chicken and he was very satisfied. I can't wait to come back here again! We need a location in San Diego!

Yelp
Friendly service, down-to-earth atmosphere and delicious food. I especially love the plantains, the refried black beans and thick homemade tortillas. Have tried the omelette and tamale and both were really tasty. Extremely interesting to try the Guatemalan style food, which is distinct from the more common Mexican cuisine in LA. Reasonable prices too, give it a try!

Yelp
The food is very dissapointing. The churrasco meat is not very good quality. The meat which should be charbroiled is not. Not worth the price!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and authentic Guatemalan food, fast and friendly service, and a nice interior with good music and pantings of Guatemala. Definitely stop by!

Yelp
The appetizers that we ordered were delicious! However we never got a chance to order the main entree due to a lack of service. It was surprising because there was only 1-2 other tables. They were about to close within 30 minutes (after sitting dish for 1 hour)! so they offered us a takeout of the entrees. Since we went clubbing that night we refused takeout & just paid for the appetizers & drinks. At the club they had tacos so we had those for dinner!

Yelp
My other half and I have been coming to this restaurant since it opened almost two years ago now. This is our number one go to spot, everyone already knows us and what we like, so when we come it feels like home. The service is great and the food is delicious. We try to come at least once a week, sometimes more. My favorite dish here is the breakfast, sometimes with chorizo or asada, we change it up. They have a vast menu, so you have a lot to explore, everything we have tried has never disappointed. This place has come up more and more. It's kinda a well kept secret. If you like authentic Guatemalan food this is it.

Yelp
If you're missing Chapínlandia's food this is the place to come to remember the tradicional and artesanal tasting of the day to day Guatemala's food original flavor. It is Dia de Los Santos and we were dying to have some Fiambre and right on it was posted on their Instagram page that today they would have FIAMBRE. We stopped by and had Fiambre, Rellenitos and mole. Everything was so tasteful and the plates were abundant. Happy to give them a 5 starts review. Keep up the good work.

Yelp
This place is a gem! My Guatemalan heart is so pleased by their food. First of all, it was here that I was able to find many of the "antojitos" (small plates) that I've been missing since moving to LA. Their dobladas are outstanding, fresh, crispy, and delicious --my absolute favorite thing on the menu. Their churrasquitos (grilled meat atop a tortilla) mixtas (hot dog on a corn tortilla), shucos (Guatemalan style hot dog), tostadas, and paches (potato-based tamal) are some of the best I've tried outside of Guatemala. The food is authentic. The service is always courteous, but expect a bit of a wait as everything is made to order and is fresh.

The food took a long time to get and further more check you bill was more than the prices on the menu so the menu is not updated and they won't honor them either had a big discussion over it they don't tell you .. is like stealing in your face!! Sucks

So so so good! I ordered a platillo de salpicón which comes with rice, beans, and a few handmade tortillas. Looking forward to coming back and trying the churrasco which seems popular hence their name.

Yelp
We had lovely lunch at Churrasco Chapin. the staff could not have been more helpful and the food was great. We all especially enjoyed the mole plantaino which made perfect ending to our meal
