"Opened in 1949 in East LA, El Gallo Bakery has been a staple for generations, providing multi-tiered quinceañera cakes, pan dulces, and fresh bolillos. It serves as a cherished community gathering place for Mexican Angelenos, evoking a sense of nostalgia and comfort." - Bill Esparza

"This East LA bakery is old, as in, the wooden display cases have been around since the 1940s. It's very charming, but where El Gallo really gets us is their razor-sharp versions of classic pan dulce. The buttery frosting on the rebanadas is mildly sweet and perfectly spread across the bread, and the puerqitos taste like a Christmas spice cabinet with piloncillo and cinnamon. Get the ojos de buey if you want something extra sweet: two crumbly shortbread cookies covered in a strawberry glaze and rolled in dried coconut. " - Sylvio Martins, Nikko Duren

"This Belvedere Gardens bakery has been around since the 1940s, and its wooden display cases and commitment to traditional recipes continue to be part of its charm. Their cuernitos de mantequilla are some of our favorites in town, with a beautiful golden yellow color, glossy top layer, and just the right amount of sweetness that calls for some butter. If you want something a little sweeter, though, try the ojos de buey, which are two small sweet breads sandwiched together, covered in a strawberry glaze, and rolled in dry coconut for tons of varying texture. But where El Gallo really gets us is their pre-packaged bread boxes where you can try an assortment of everything, share with friends, or use it to make amends with your mom after missing her birthday (again)." - Sylvio Martins

Today the service left a sour taste in my mouth. I love their bread. A gentleman in front of me that has been going for 53 years was scolded for not requesting boxes from the beginning. He didn't reply. Then I was next and I told her that the server didn't ask. I believe it was the manager and she told server. The lady flat out lied. The same with lady behind me. What poor customer service. How do you scold people in front of all the customers? The server did ask for help from the lady taking stock. I think it was the manager and she told her no. When I arrived it was I and the gentleman. When I left it about 20 waiting. I counted more than five people leaving. I hope to never go thru this again. Show your employees how to treat the customer.

Google
Sorry to leave bad review, but I pointed to (don’t speak much Spanish) and asked for guava. Either asked “guava and cream?” I asked for black coffee. Then she forgot my coffee. Then worker asked for. size and if I wanted cream? I said yes. What I got was cafe de olla which has spices and sugar. Well I did NOT want sugared coffee. It was delicious, but not what I asked for. My point is they got the worker got the order wrong for two items. Picture shows the guava/cream pastry MINUS filling. I got a horrible quality plain puff pastry that is undercooked. Like really poor product. The pineapple empanada was good. The almond concha was okay. A bit small, seemed a bit stale as it was dry. Not the best, but not the worse. I was in area. Won’t be back. Prices seemed a bit high compared to my LA bakery. Too bad. Oh they don’t do Apple Pay which is okay, but worker wanted to see my phone? I paid $12 cash for 3 parties, medium spiced coffee, and bottled mineral water. It’s a treat for me to eat out. So this was a disappointment.

This is the only place that I can find in SoCal that serves white mole. To partake in it here, you must order a dish they call "El Velo de Novia" ("the wedding veil," from Spanish), featuring grilled black tiger shrimp drizzled in the sauce, served with a buttery mound of rice. Like most other moles, it is thick, has a piquancy that gradually builds the more you eat of it, but is tough to nail down vis-à-vis exactly what's in it. In addition to chiles, allium, and butter, the creamy mole certainly seems to have white chocolate involved, along with almonds. Due to the influence of the latter two ingredients, it is sweet and tastes like Christmas to me. I enjoyed my mole blanco experience. It's very much unlike other moles, but similar in some ways as well. It is wise that Mexicans serve this only on very special occasions, as it is a bit "much" for an everyday meal -- the density and richness of the mole makes it impossible to eat very much of it without feeling full.

Let me just start by saying that I drive about 25 miles to go buy in what my opinion is the best pan dulce anywhere. From their conchas, empanadas, puerquitos to the cuernos con mantequilla and on and on. They also have tamales and champurrado for purchase as well. If you are looking for some great pan dulce this is definitely the place to go and its definitely worth the drive.

Google
Food is absolutely amazing, Hey they have delicious menudo, not too thick chaparado, the conchas pan dulce go earliness worth the wait and you won't be disappointed

Google
This restaurant has a no-frills setup and some amazing moles! Authentic and delicious. Looking forward to my next visit! Get the platter - it's delish! Tortilla chips and salsa are on the house.

Google
Tastes like homemade food. Love the cafe de olla and agua fresca. Service was good. However, it can be a bit of a wait for large parties.

Google
Butter croissants are good but very greasy. Boxes are extra, which would be fine but they don’t ask you so you have to tell them. I found out o Lu after she bagged my items in small thin paper bags. The bag was greasy by the time I got to my car. You’d think they’d use thicker bags for spending $40 on pastries

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
BEST PAN DULCE IN TOWN! They use real butter and you can taste it! Soooo delicious. The ladies that work/serve there are very sweet and attentive. You should stop by!!

Christina M.

Yelp
Customer service is a 1. When you have 4 employees not helping but one and see the line out the door no one else steps in to help? Tamales were a 1- hardly any meat lacked flavor. (Costcos are better) I don't know why people are complaining about showing ID it's for the protection of you and the owner so get over it. The bread appears soft. I will give that review when I get home to try that. Customer service can improve. SMILE, step in and help when it's needed.

Belinda A.

Yelp
Authentic, great quality, a legend in East LA. All the favs, the conches are moist, and if you come early you will find many are still warm. Service is warm and fast

Raul G.

Yelp
No prices showing on their baked products. I was shocked when i was charged $4.50 for 2 pcs of sweet bread on display on their glass rack. I bought a piece of colored pink bread with shredded coconut coating and an empanada with pineapple filling for $4.50!!! No receipt was given. It was my first visit. Not coming back anymore.

Paola M.

Yelp
Although this bakery is one of my favorites today was so disappointing. I didn't know they don't accept Mastercard. I always use my debit card to pay. Today I went to buy some goodies and the cashier asked me what form of payment I said debit she told me if it was Mastercard I can't use it. I seriously only thought it was for Mastercard credit cards (that is what their sign say) but she confirmed it's for both credit cards and debit cards. Luckily I had 15 dollars with me so I was able to pay cash. I strongly suggest you guys take cash just in case. Parking is not the best it's small so street parking is your other option and even that it can be difficult to find sometimes.

Martin B.

Yelp
Wow ... I guess the owner doesn't know anything about business!!! You can't use mastercard, you need an ID to use your card .. you can use zelle ( it takes few minutes to send the money while your holding the line people will look at you mad ). I used my other Visa cards and somehow the screens shows insufficient founds !!!!!! Wtf. I have more than $12000 able to use. We have been a customers for more than 20 years. Today is the last time we go to this panaderia. The Owner needs to reflect on the situation of his business. This situation made me feel like a criminal.

Patti O.

Yelp
Hadn't been back to El Gallo since last year in January, for Día de los Reyes and they wanted about $45 for a small rosa. So, last weekend we bought some bread. Their bolillos are definitely not good and I was shocked when I tried their "cuernos de mantequilla" (they used to be my favorite). I don't know whether they've changed bakers or it was a bad batch, but after eating less than half of one, I threw all of the bread away. They are usually dense, but these were especially dense and tasted and smelled of lard. Very disappointed.

Stephani G.

Yelp
The cafe de olla used to be worth coming by, but now they require ID for ALL transactions including debit cards and tap pay (Apple). The signage states it's specifically for credit cards, but when you approach the counter they said it's for any payment except cash. Genuinely disappointed with the customer service and how they're going about this.

Tanya G.

Yelp
I bought a chicken tamale, and it was a letdown. It had no flavor and was basically just a ball of dough. I paid nearly $6 for the tamale and a cuerno de mantequilla . The bread was tasty, though, and I would've rated it 4 stars if I had only tried the bread.

Nicole P.

Yelp
This place is so bomb. One of my favorite spots. Love the fresh sweet bread, the drinks are so good, the service is fast and friendly, good atmosphere and energy here. The parking lot is a little small so find street parking if you can or walk ;)

Ray M.

Yelp
This is still my favorite bakery of them all. I used to visit this bakery as a rug rat with my parents and now I visit here with my three daughters. A long time customer. To this day, this is still my favorite bakery of them all. I drive 17 miles from home simply to buy my Mexican sweet bread from bakery. My favorite of them all is "El Payaso". Ask for one next time you stop by and share your thoughts Employees here are always friendly, helpful and very efficient. Before leaving, be sure to order a Champurrado which is a thick and cream chocolatey Mexican drink. So good Every visit here is a positive experience.

Diana M.

Yelp
El Gallo is known for their Bolillos! They have a variety of options which makes it great! They also have a variety of sweet bread. The pan dulce is so good and fresh which makes the bread taste so good! They also sell some prepackaged chili verde, rice and beans which is great if you forget your lunch. The staff is friendly! The only thing I will say is parking in limited and the lines can be long so be sure to give yourself time if you're in a rush. The ambiance isn't a sit down place, more of a grab and go! Overall, it's a good panadería.

Camila O.

Yelp
Grew up eating pan from El Gallo, now we make a 45 minute drive whenever we find an excuse to get some. We stopped by yesterday to pick some up, and noticed a very strong floral cleaning smell; It smelled like a gallon of fabuloso was spilled somewhere in the store. We picked up a variety of different pan dulce from the display cases (conchas, cuernitos, elotes, and the ginger pigs). After getting home we tried them, and unfortunately they had a strong artificial floral taste. I thought it was just me, but I had the rest of my family try them and they were also able to confirm the taste. I'm disappointed because we bought these for a family event, and now we're unable to serve them. The pan here is pricey, but usually I consider them worth the price. Hopefully this is just a one off batch problem, and next time we come things will be back to normal.

Marina N.

Yelp
First of all the young man who answered the phone stated they would be making fresh bread all day!!! Wait in line for 3 min and once inside the worker states it will be 1 hr 1/2for fresh dinner rolls!!!! Then they are UNDER STAFFED. the same people assisting are the same people charging you. HOW LONG HAS THE BAKERY BEEN OPEN??? THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN PROPPROPERLY STAFFED!!! then one of the credit card machines is down. 2 freaking registers for that BUSY BUSY bakery on a holiday!! Come on for the prices they charge because they are far from cheap! And to top it off the owner of across the street in front of his restaurant just looking in the phone REALLY???? what kind of MESS is this??

Denise D.

Yelp
This is not about the bread but about the request the cashier asked for. She asked me to show my I.D. When I paid with my debit card. WTH I've been buying bread here for decades , they don't serve liquor here. Like seriously though, and on top of that she asked me if I even have an I.d. . This is out of line here , Managers teach your employees how to give customer service

Anne A.

Yelp
I love old restaurants. In this case, an old "classic" Los Angeles bakery, It's been around since 1949. I always noticed while grabbing food in East LA, but the crowds looked intimidating. I visited on a week day evening where I found parking right in front of the bakery. I am constantly tasting conchas and wanted to taste their conchas. You fall in line and tell a lady what you'd like. Once I got to the counter I asked what do people order here? She told me: "mantequilla" I knew she meant the buttery Mexican croissant. What you'll want to order from this long standing Mexican panaderia is the "cuerno de mantequilla." This piece of pan dulce is heavy unlike the French croissant. I assume it's because of all the butter in this pan dulce. It heavy, buttery, slightly sweet, and slightly crunchy on the edges. I'd skip the conchas as I've tasted better. The rice pudding is also medicore. You can find better rice pudding making it home or picking up the freshly made ones at Vallarta. They ran out of champurrado so I'm assuming that's popular too. This is essential LA! Go support our old restaurants and bakery and let's keep them alive!

Yelp
Our family has been coming here for ages. The bread is the tastiest around however El Gallo's bread has suffered some serious Shrinkflation and prices have risen too. The cuernos, the elites, and even the tortugas have gotten smaller. 5 stars for delicious bread but 3 stars for value.

Theresa Renee W.

Yelp
Frequently in the area and have a tendency to shop local businesses. Mexican Pan pastries, available Tamales cheese and pork the day I came in. This place maybe small however it has the freshest pan that you can warm up a day later and it's as tho it came out the oven. Parking available

Ivonne M.

Yelp
By far one of the best if not the best bakery I have been to- their bread is always fresh- even the next day! One of my favorite things is the "canasta" which is a preboxed (yet still stays fresh) mini pan dulces - they're perfect for sampling different flavors at an event or to take the office. They also have delicious cafe de olla! I called last week to place an order for pick up in the morning (on my way to work) and the service to take the order was efficient and she answered all my questions and the order was ready even when I arrived 5 minutes early. You will not be disappointed.

Lupita C.

Yelp
I recently tried the Tamale de Raja from this bakery, and unfortunately, it wasn't to my liking. The flavors didn't meet my expectations, and I found it lacking in taste and texture. I'm usually excited to try new items, but this one just didn't work for me. I hope to find other treats here that I enjoy more in the future.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Still one of the best Mexican bakeries I've had. Everything's so fresh and delicious.

Stephanie H.

Yelp
the burritos that they sell are terrible the potato isn't cooked at all. do not recommend for breakfast burritos.

Maria S.

Yelp
Totally disappointed with their Pan de agua dinner rolls, not sure if their recipe changed but definitely doesn't taste like they used to.

Alfonso A.

Yelp
Getting to the bottom of this "chocolate chip" muffin and finally running into a scatter of chocolate chips... this was one of my favorite selections but they've must have gotten a new baker because this is what I've been getting for a while now. Disappointing.

Isabelle V.

Yelp
Honestly I've tried bread from many many places. AND there is no bread like the one from El Gallo. It is really good, soft for days and they have this sweet cinnamon taste. The owner owns several properties here, I've tried his restaurant but I wasn't impress as how much I like his bakery.

Terri M.

Yelp
I pre-ordered my bread paid it in full and was due to pick it up tonight at seven. There was a line. I asked if I needed to stay in line they said yes I was OK with that. After 5 minutes of standing in line they announced there was no bread and you had to stand in line for a hour and a half. they should've had my bread in a bag for me already. I had my receipt showing I paid and they said they didn't have it for me. They gave me 2 dozen day old bread, it was already hard by the time I got home. Their system should be better letting people pre order and pay but still having some for people that wait in line. Good luck to anyone getting bread tomorrow

Jasmine M.

Yelp
I agree with these recent reviews. This place is not the same anymore! Not many varieties are available. Also drinks were not available to me when they opened . You would think they have things ready for customers to purchase since they do open at an exact time. Apparently not! I was charged before receiving my drinks . Then was told they did not have any. I was very disappointed. I settled for a cafe de olla to give to someone and the girl thought I was not going to know the difference from regular to olla coffee . She then told me they did not have olla coffee either . My drive to this place was not worth it anymore. I lost out on a variety of breads I wanted and drink! Left disappointed and without my $. Not coming back here again.

Lela R.

Yelp
This bakery is incredible. We ordered treats and coffee for 400 people and then needed to make a last minute change. They were extremely adaptable and wonderful to work with and everyone loved the breads. We will definitely order from them again for any events we host.

David M.

Yelp
Feeling a little nostalgic was in the area with my daughters, who absolutely love this place they brought me back. We used to bring them when they were kids... I have not been here in like 20 years. Has not changed the Concha. They are so good soft delicious and moist taste, so good in your mouth. Ordered the bread of course had to have some of that. The bread is so soft and delicious. Oh so good feel so good to be back here. They're absolutely still the best for Mexican bread and buns

Mayra M.

Yelp
My partner loves the bread here, especially the conchas. So we came yesterday, but I noticed an odd smell and taste, like floral almost similar to fabuloso. I saw someone comment something similar as well. So now I know I'm not crazy. I didn't feel comfortable eating it so I didn't. They should look into it.

Carmen M.

Yelp
It's very sad having to write this review because I've been coming here for over 15 years. The quality and the flavor of the bread has declined drastically. After having built such a strong clientele, I don't know what makes them think people won't notice a change in quality and flavor. I don't know if they changed owners or not but even the quality in customer service has changed. They are not as efficient or friendly anymore. I used to drive more than 45 minutes to this place. Now I work close by but I won't be returning. Their pan de muerto is worse than Northgate's now. It used to be so good I would buy it in bulk and freeze them to enjoy them after November. Today I couldn't even eat it.

Rose B.

Yelp
Favorite Mexican bakery there is around. It's been around for years. Pan de aqua is so good. Soft, always fresh. Their pastries and their sweets are so good. Always fresh. Expect lines on holidays. Ambience it's out of date- terrible ventilation. Now to be honest I don't know about prices but I don't buy Mexican bread or eat it on a daily but for the taste it's good. Parking located on the side of bakery. Service was great.

Geo S.

Yelp
Been coming here for so many years and definitely my last time coming here .. this place got extremely expensive!! And the bread got smaller , and the rudeness of the employees is really bad . Definitely will not support this over expensive bakery ..

Misa T.

Yelp
I am beyond dissappointed at this bakery. I wouldn't mind paying almost $50 for a dozen pan dulces and 2 cups of coffee if the quality and flavor was there. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Every single pastry was dry and tasted like its been sitting out for a couple days. Every single one! Not even one good one out of the whole box. Yelp really failed this one. Don't go

Edward P.

Yelp
This is a great spot if looking for some pan(Mexican sweet bread) so damn good. Big variety and have been serving the community for years. I can't recommend just one thing because everything that come from here is delicious. And that's just not hungry talk. Small parking lot but plenty of street parking. Masks required and low staff but the line moves quick and worth the wait. They also offer hot permafrost food such as a variety of breakfast burritos, rice, beans, birria and also sopas(soups) to go. This trip I got a couple pieces of pan de Agua. These small rolls were soft and delicious definitely would go back simply for these rolls. It was worth the drive from the SGV for me and the fam.

Lulu F.

Yelp
Great service and the bread is always fresh! Always professional and the place is very clean ! It's our go too for any family events!

Jose C.

Yelp
One of the best tasting Mexican sweet breads in the area , , great service and delicious sweet Mexican bread ...

Inez L.

Yelp
Delicious empanadas! Semitas are also available. I had not eaten one of these in like forever!! The empanadas were warm. I ate it in the car!!!

Ivy Jane A.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years and it's one of our favorite Mexican bakeries. I ordered queso guava and my husband ordered payaso. Their baked goods are good. They have tamales, rice, pork and chicken. Looks good.

Debi P.

Yelp
By far the very best Mexican Bakery. I absolutely love their bread. So tasty and authentic. My neighbor told me of it about 5 years ago and I have been a returning customer since. Even during the pandemic. It's my go to place for any Mexican celebration I'm attending. The bread and pastries are always enjoyed by all. The prices are reasonable as well. Check it out. I highly recommend it.

Apple J.

Yelp
Pan de agua and cuerno de mantequilla were good. Rest of the very expensive bread that we bought was very dry. Definitely was not fresh!

B.L. N.

Yelp
You know what the bread here is Great so is the coffee. But I came here today to grab a coffee and it was cold. I asked them if they could microwave it and got so much flack for it. I was treated like crap they looked at me like it was my problem the coffee was cold. then the whole time this lady kept asking me to move so she could mop. Not okay. I wanna take what I said about the bread being good back the mantecada muffin I bought was stale. Very stale.

Diana D.

Yelp
I've been A faithful customer to this establoshment for many years. Along with my family and friends, I do not recommend it. The staff are very rude and the champurado was rancid. I wanted my money back. They refused to refund me my money and I will not Be returning here again. I do not recommend this place. Do not waste your money or your time go to another bakery. La mascota bakery in Boyle heights on whittier boulevard is very good and their customer service is excellent.

Melani H.

Yelp
I just want to say I know what cleaning products they use, all their bread taste to me like fabuloso-and smells like cleaning product. I given it breaks and gone back and still taste the same.

vivian t.

Yelp
I grew around the corner from here so this was our go-to pan dulce place. The pan dulce is good, but this last time I bought some it wasn't "wow" . What I really enjoy are their cookies and Pan de Agua most of all and those are still great. My main problem was how hot it was in there. I get it, it's a bakery but I felt bad for the women working there. There was absolutely no ventilation going on. That's probably why they seem so grumpy. I politely asked the woman working to add something to my order and she gave me the nastiest stare. Management/ ownership really needs to get it together when it comes to working conditions. I'm sure they can afford a fan.

Jacqueline L.

Yelp
Best pan dulce in LA! Great quality and customer service has kept my family coming here for decades. It's a holiday staple and a year round treat.

Gloria R.

Yelp
Love love love! That's all I have to say!!!! Best place in east LA for pan Dulce and cafe de la oya.

Raquel O.

Yelp
4.5 but I'll round up! The pan dulce here is very delicious and I've never had a bad experience. My favorite is the tortuga, very similar to a traditional concha but better! Today I ordered 5 boxes with a mix of half dozen panes in each for friends and family. The lady helping me was great and packed it all up for me. There is a small parking lot adjacent to the bakery but please keep in mind peak time frames, the parking might be street parking only. Thank you again El Gallo!

Buckey's W.

Yelp
Don't waist your time, the pan was blah and the champurrado tasted like what I would think bathroom cleaner tastes like. How does someone fk up champurrado so bad. I immediately took both full cups back to get a refund (I paid cash) and Maria refused to refund anything and then contacted the Supervisor in which she wouldn't give her name; so they exchanged it for coke instead. Crappy service and food
