The 15 Best Salvadoran Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Rosa Guillen purchased El Majahual two decades ago from its owner and has been running the show since. Under her care, the restaurant expanded to include a spacious dining area to accommodate families and large parties. Crowds descend on this Historic Filipinotown spot for Guillen’s famous rice flour pupusas, tamales de chipilin (an herb native to Central America), and sopa de pata (beef foot soup). To drink are Salvadoran aguas frescas like the fresco de arrayan, a sweet-tart fruit in the guava family." - Eric Valle

Google
So we passed this place since we are new in the area. Oh my God! Everything was so good!n everything was made to order! The pupusas were very very good! I got pan con pollo and it was the best! Our server was very nice and very attentive. You can tell this is the spot people go to after church. It got packed at about 11:30 am on a Sunday. I would most definitely go back. The horchata was very flavorful. I most definitely give this place 5 stars. It was totally comfort food and I needed a nap after everything I ate hahahaha. Will come back and try out more plates 🤤🤗

Google
The Pupusas are delicious. Pupusas are made to order ..good food takes time to prepare, so be patient when ordering your food. The chicharron con yuca frita is delicious and piping. MUST stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

Google
The chipillin tamales w beans were warm n soft n the pupusa was cheesy n brownly crisped so nicely. I could feel the luv in the food u kno . The guy at the register described diff dishes on the menu w sm care n brought out salsa n 2 types of hot sauce w the cabbage :9 also the Salvadoran horchata was so good, it’s nuttier n earthier n less sweet . All for $13 . Felt like a warm hug :~)

Google
Excellent pupusas, possibly the best ever, and I very much enjoyed the personable service and casual atmosphere. A gem in the neighborhood!

El Terriblé Eric

Google
I loved the sopa de pata. Very clean and flavorful The Tamal de Chipilin was really good, and they're filled with the same beans they use in their Pupusas! The sopa de costilla con Chipilin was the star of the show for me. Everything was well served and tasty.

Google
My favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. Family-run, down to earth. A delicious meal and affordable

AJ Demulling

Google

I can't believe we haven't had this food sooner! Delicious!

Yelp
I ordered 4 pupusas and 2 drinks. I got 2 revueltas and 1 revuelta with rice and one with queso y loroco. The drinks were marañon y arrayan. The pupusas are not as big for the price but the quality of the food is great. The sauce is okay and the curtido is good. The service was great the young man that helped out was friendly and knew his culture's food. The ambiance well I didn't get to eat inside the restaurant since it was to go.
google avatar

Jewel R.

Yelp
The quality of the food tastes yummy and flavorful! The pan con pollo was my favorite and the pupusas tasted good just needed a little more filling. The wait time can take minute but only when theyre super packed

Josh H.

Yelp
Im super picky when it comes to Pupusas and these didn't disappoint. I understand that some people are used to the bigger pupusas, but for me that's indicator of cheap product and more dough. The young gentleman at the front was very welcoming and made us feel at home. Everything tastes fresh and I can't wait to come back and try more of their foods.
google avatar

Ken S.

Yelp
Very tasty pupusas! The cortido and sauce is fire! Love going to this place! They have expanded before it was grab and go now you can sit and enjoy it there.
google avatar

Gaby P.

Yelp
Fast, friendly, yummy, and affordable. Some seating inside but I ordered two pupusas to go, they were good and not too thick with the masa.
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
The pupusas here were on point very thin layer of tortilla (masa) packed with cheesy cheese , the mixed pupusas had the right mix of the pork beans and cheese

Yelp
If I could leave NO stars for this restaurant I really would. My father and uncle have been loyal customers for a while because they work around the area and they always make a pit stop there. UNFORTUNATELY this has come to and end. They were beyond rude to them, did not offer any SALSA for the food they had purchased. They have taken their MONEY and loyalty to another restaurant this is the main reason why restaurants loose customers because they don't take the time to offer GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE:. You won't succeed if you don't fix your attitude. para la otra trata de ser más gentil con los clientes para que no los sigas perdiendo.

Anna H.

Yelp
Best Chicharron Pupusas EVER!!! They always taste amazing. My favorite Pupusa spot in LA area! They offer dine in service but their to go is always fast and efficient. Very nice family owned business, very clean location.

Lewis M.

Yelp
Best Pupusas in LA! Been going here for 2 decades! Go-to spot without a doubt I usually get Huevos con chorizo and 2 pupusas de revuelta, let me tell you, HITS THE SPOT EVERY TIME!

Betsy D.

Yelp
Amazing food, homey atmosphere, you won't regret it. I've tried many Pupuserias and this is hidden gem.

Maeva F.

Yelp
The food is good but they do not have customer service. They got my order wrong and instead of fixing it, they just said that thats what they heard and did not offer any solution. The guy answering the phone is rude.

Miguel B.

Yelp
Good customer service and the food was delicious i definitely recommend. I for sure would recommend the pupusas. They were some of the best I've had for sure .

Enzo T.

Yelp
I use to come here years ago. Before it really was just a place you order, pay and take to eat in your car or wherever. They recently remodeled with a sitting area. So much better! Let's start off that the pupusas are amazing. Decent size and a decent price but loaded with lots of flavor. The Pan con Pollo is exquisitely made with love and attention, delicious! Then let's talk about the fried plantains. Lots of places charge an arm and a leg for a scoop or cream and a dab of refried beans and like four or five slices of plantains. Not this place. They give you your moneys worth. You and your momma have got to check this place out! Peace out!

Yelp

google avatar

Sergio R.

Yelp
The place is average , but the service was just horrible . So sad to see a business go down , when the people that work there make the experience uncomfortable. I highly don't recommend this place .

Stanley Q.

Yelp
My mother walked to order some pupusas. At that moment My son needed to use the restroom because he wasn't feeling well. He ended up vomiting. Once my mother came out one of the ladies didn't even let my mother say anything and told her she had to pay 2 dollars to use the restroom. My mother explained to her the situation and also that she would be purchasing pupusas to go. The lady very rudely insisted that she had to pay 2 dollar because they didn't have public restrooms. The situation could had been handled differently in my opinion. This was the last time we get pupusas from here

Zulma A.

Yelp
antes las pupusas eran mejores ahora son más pequeñas y con menos comida es más masa no bueno porque para nosotros eran las mejores pero ya no

Joanna P.

Yelp
Been going here for years since the first owner was here. However, now with the new owner not only pupusas are super thin but service sucks. The people who take your owner walk like if they are dragging themselves. They should great you with a smile sorry to say it but they look like they are lazy.. Also last time I was there one of the tables had a nail clipper which I found disgusting . Tables were filthy too.. Hopefully they either change service or improve ..
google avatar

Ramon D.

Yelp
The pupusas are so good!! The revueltas are the best ones. This was my first time trying a pupusa de arroz, and those were good too!

Karen O.

Yelp
I got the Pan Con Pollo and I ended up getting salmonella I got sick instantly when eating it I got nauseous and a bad headache.
google avatar

Carolina N.

Yelp
Best pupusas I have ever tasted. We always come back here. I live in West Covina and still come get some . The best there is :) Recommend for sure!

Erin E.

Yelp
I wish I can give them no stars!!!! My family and I have been coming here for 20 plus years, I asked for extra curtido and extra salsa and they said no! I couldn't understand why, there was a sign that showed to pay extra for the curtido and salsa, which is so absurd that she said no. See picture. The workers here are very rude and the service is really bad. I have never felt so disrespected at a restaurant until now. One of the workers that is pregnant would rather flirt with the other customers instead of serving people with good manners. I will be telling ALL my family and friends not to come here.
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
My Favorite El Salvadorian restaurant. Prices were reasonable. Food was fresh. Yuca frita con chicharones was a huge plate. Came with a sour salad which was perfect with the fried food. It wasnt Curtido. But that was good too with my pupusas. About 10 inches wide! Curtido was fresh and crispy not soggy.

Ileana A.

Yelp
When this restaurant had just open the food was amazing the pupusas were wonderful and big. Now the pupusas are not very good they are super small and thin and more pricey.

Jonathan S.

Yelp
google avatar

Dilia G.

Yelp
This is the worse restaurant in Los Angeles, this people are nasty, ones of the employees throw in the floor a tortilla she pick up and put back with the rest of the tortilla and then serve to a customer, same lady eating at the same time she make pupusas, imagine how many germs this people transport to the customers , with those pupusas, the most terrible thing is that we eat ovethere

Nayeli P.

Yelp
Food is tasty! However be prepared to WAIT. You have to wait for EVERYTHING, getting seated, placing an order, getting your food and paying your bill. I advise you order ahead via phone. Pretty much no customer service. Just the ladies fighting in the back. Lol
google avatar

Jesse A.

Yelp
Lowkey there food is really good, BUT service is trash. You'll be waiting 15 min just to order another 15 just to finally eat. They all laggers, making us Salvi's look bad. They got potential but idk.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Pupusas are the best bang for your $$$ just order over the phone and pick it up. Service Problem Solved... That's what I do with all of the hole in the wall places. It's about the food in my opinion... Happy New Years Resolution #1
google avatar

Jaymz K.

Yelp
The most authentic salvadorean food ever And there staff extremely friendly and knowledgeable on everything that goes into those delicious traditional mouthwatering dishes , I say "A MUST " in ones bucket list, love these ladies !!
google avatar

Ericka G.

Yelp
Love this Salvadoran restaurant! My dad and mom introduced me to this restaurant and I am obsessed. Their pupusas and milk empanadas are made to perfection! Any time some one asks me for the beat Salvadoran restaurant, I recommend this place!
google avatar

Amarilis P.

Yelp
My grandmother loves this place and recommended it to us. She says the food reminds her of authentic Salvadorian food (that says a lot coming from a Salvadorian cook like herself). This little hole in the wall place is located on the corner of Temple and Bonnie Brae and the pupusas here are divine! The curtido is excellent and adds the right amount of kick and texture. The horchata tastes very authentic and the atol de pina is absolutely AMAZING! The food tastes very authentic and delicious. The waitresses are very friendly and attentive. The restaraunt is VERY clean although very small. We came here with a group of about 9 peple and it was very uncomfortable due to the small dining area. They also have a private parking lot they share with other businesses. I love this little place. It is perfect for a Saturday lunch or Sunday dinner. CASH ONLY!!!!!
google avatar

Silvia A.

Yelp
Came to try the food with my husband. The pupusas were great. Then horchata and the ensalada drinks were tasty. The customer service needs improvement. Please try better staff at El Majahual to improve your attention to your clients.
google avatar

Claudia M.

Yelp
I been coming here for years....it's the best Pupuseria in LA This is my number one spot
google avatar

Maurice H.

Yelp
Dude, the pupusas in this place are to die for. Las mejores pupusas en Los Angeles. It is a whole in the wall place and affordable.
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
Really a 4.5. But my uncle and aunts favorite spot. A good spot to get the better then usual pupusas (:
google avatar

Merie Gisele M.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I walked in and the way we were greeted was the worst. I never judge a place by its reviews, so I went to check it out for myself. The food looks good but I couldn't stand the waiters face. We didnt even look at the menu, we just got up and left.
google avatar

Jil L.

Yelp
I wish I could give a negative score or no star. Pupusas might be super good over here but damn service is so poor! Workers here are rude and don't know customer service. They should not have opened this restaurant. I'd rather starve than come here!!
google avatar

Doris N.

Yelp
Pupusas pupusas and more pupusas... their pupusas became my favorite a to go to food. The salsa and the cabbage is excellent. The pupusas is amazing. I dont know what else to say but yes.... amazing.
google avatar

Karla E.

Yelp
It's a shame, we love the food but the service, every damn time. Keep in mind this is the only place that we get our pupusas from. Because the pupusas are so very good. But this service my gosh every time we shake it off but today today was too much. The waitress had the decency to tell my husband didn't your back hurt? My husband said no why do you ask? She's like because you guys we're taking forever to leave. Well excuse me, we didn't complain when you asked if we wanted a menu, common sense if you go to restaurant and you sit of course I wanna see the menu, also in every restaurant any waiter or waitress check up on you and ask if you need anything else. I don't know what it was but it's a shame. I have Salvadoren blood in me and my husband Mexican, we live in a time where we specially the Latin American community should be more united than ever to treat my husband with such disrespect, even my mother in law feels disrespected, I like sharing Salvadoran customs to my kids and my husbands family but today this place made it hard for me. Now I don't even know if I ever wanna go.
google avatar

Debora S.

Yelp
Ok so you already know when ordering pupusas there is always a wait but I won't give business to someone who makes me feel that they don't want it. Saying things like well it's going to take really long and I don't think you want to wait. Like what?! How do you know what I want? I actually drove here from the San Fernando valley and instead of giving a crappy attitude back to them I decided to yelp. Don't think it will catch their attention or make much of a difference in their customer service, but I did the community a favor by letting them know how crappy their service is. The food is good as I've had it before but def never coming back. Oh well.
google avatar

Fatiha Q.

Yelp
I love the loroco pupsua!! Such a comfort food! Affordable and very filling food. Traditional and rustic place.
google avatar

Emma C.

Yelp
I would give this place 5 starts because they have the best pupusas ever (and I'm Salvadorian), but their customer service is terrible. The people working there really have no respect to treat customers!
google avatar

Cherry B.

Yelp
I ALWAYS get mixed (revuelta) pupusas here. SO GOOD I don't want to go anywhere else to get them. Three stars because there IS no customer service. That's why I order for pickup ONLY.
google avatar

Bella F.

Yelp
We visited here a few weeks ago and it was wonderful - they were attentive and friendly, and though (as others have noted) the food was slow in coming, the pupusas were incredible and so worth it. I was dying to go back and make this a regular haunt and give yet another glowing review here, as I love supporting local small businesses. Unfortunately, when we went back we had an entirely different experience. We sat ourselves at the only open table, and no one acknowledged us, brought menus, said hello, nothing. Two other tables opened up, were cleaned, and people who came after us sat and both were quickly provided menus, cutlery, condiments, gave drink orders, etc. We were still ignored. After 10-15 mins. my lunch partner went to ask for menus, peeking into the kitchen. He was ignored for several more minutes even though he was standing there clearly wanting something, and he finally asked for service. He was begrudgingly handed ONE menu without a word of apology or anything else, and even then we were still ignored. A few minutes later we left, deeply disappointed and annoyed. I'm not sure if it was because we were a different ethnicity from everyone else there or what (I hate to even think such a thing, especially given how great the ladies there were the first time!), but I've never felt so unwelcome in a food establishment.

Yelp
Before the LA Derby Dolls bout on Saturday, Skylar and I went to El Majahual because it was almost directly across the street from the Doll Factory and we didn't feel like moving our cars since parking can be difficult in the neighborhood though El Majahual is part of a strip mall so they have their own parking. Skylar was attracted to the A rating and I was attracted to the idea of pupusas. We each ordered two. She got the lorroco with cheese ($2.25 each) and I got one chicharone and one revuelta, or as I told Skylar, pork and more pork. Mine were $2 each. I also got a tamarindo to drink. $6 plus tax and tip? This was the cheapest dinner ever! And it was very filling. We got our pupusas and I went to town with the curtido and the salsa. I felt the salsa was really mild and the curtido wasn't very vinegar-y. Still, I enjoyed the crunch of the veggies with the slightly crisp pupusa and tender fillings. I did prefer one pupusa over the other and I'm pretty sure it was the revuelta. But since I'm no pupusa expert, I guess I'll have to order both again to be sure. They also have plain cheese pupusas, a ton of different soups, entrees and a couple of other drinks. It's a small homey place with beach towels depicting a typical El Savador day and a map of El Salvador in frames. The floor was a really cool mishmash of tiles. The restroom was found after going through a bit of a maze but it was clean. I may have had better pupusas but considering the proximity of this place to where we wanted to be, A+! CASH ONLY

Yelp
My go-to pupusa spot.. except they are closed on tuesdays, so heh not my go-to on Tuesday. I wouldn't call the service bad, as several people say. It's just slow. Consistently so. So be prepared for that. Nonetheless, the ladies are the best. They are so sweet, I can't even imagine them giving "attitude" as I see some saying. I also go to Los Molcajetes down the street when El Majahual is closed, but the consistent excellence of the pupusas here OBVIOUSLY stand out. Not to mention, with the breakfast portion, they give you far more than other Salvadorean spots :). Also, they just installed new seating. As a regular, I have a very special fondness for this little restaurant. Btw, walk to the counter to pay.
