The Best Breakfast Tacos in San Antonio | Bon Appétit

"Open and bustling since 1969, this cafe serves daily barbacoa (rather than only on weekends) made from a mixture of beef cheeks and head meat wrapped in a maguey leaf with a cow tongue on top; the tongue is served separately. The maguey imparts a subtle vegetal note, and cooks preserve just enough fat so each bite is unctuous. Diners often pair the barbacoa with potatoes cooked in red-tinged chorizo fat and a squeeze of fresh lime, or have the seasoned cooks pack the tender meat into tacos." - ByEdmund Tijerina

This cafe is a special little gem where the food is really tasty. Service was outstanding it's a quint place. Parking is a task...but you will find parking. Even if you park a block away it's worth going. I had albondigas with corn tortillas delicious 😋. Hubby had menudo with flour tortillas. Our drinks were lemonade and sweet tea.

Google
Y'all!?.. 3 words, Green Chicken Enchiladas! These were so good and authentic. We also tried their tacos which were also great. Would ask for queso fresco with them next time. So glad we decided to stop here! This place is BYOB. Friendly staff and big props to the cooks, they know what they're doing!

Google
This place is across from Tycoon Flats. It has indoor and outdoor seating. From the outside you can’t tell how big it is or if anyone is there but when you walk in, there’s plenty of seating. Our waitress was friendly and fast and the food was delicious. The only downside is finding parking.

Google
I was blown away with this little spot. We were looking for good huevos rancheros and came across El Milagrito online and decided to give it a shot. The service was extremely friendly and the food was awesome. The huevos rancheros with barbacoa hit the spot. The tortillas are homemade, warm and fresh. The salsa verde has some serious kick. I strongly recommend!

Google
This local spot is the best place to co.e eat breakfast. Me and the hubs never leave San Antonio without stopping here! It's a little run down, and parking is hit or miss. However, the service and food make it all worth it! They have homemade tortillas!! The staff is super friendly and welcoming. I recommend giving this gem a try.

Google
This place is ALL THE VIBES, the food is always great, the staff is always amazing (we are out of towners), it is always a hit with the little one as well. Thank yall for being amazing and treating us so kindly over the years!

Google
Just 5 minutes away from downtown. You will find El Milagrito cafe off of hwy 281and N. St.Mary's. We came on a Sunday morning after church. No line no waiting compared to the downtown area, and best of all no downtown prices! Food as always is great here. we had huevos rancheros and pork chop and huevos rancheros and barbacoa. We had never tried the barbacoa here, and although it is not authentic cheek meat, It is deliciously seasoned roast chuck meat. Service is always great, and of course, the prices are very reasonable.

Google
Small seat-yourself Mexican restaurant with a wide variety of options including taco plates, enchiladas, breakfast tacos, and lunch specials. Good variety of lunch options and the prices make me forget about inflation (great prices for lunch specials). Drinks include canned soda, Aguas frescas, coffee and tea. Chips and warm salsa are brought to the table, and the good stuff- spicy green and orange salsa brought in squeeze bottles. We recommend the enchiladas and Jamaica agua fresca. Friendly and timely service. Comfy, cozy, and casual atmosphere. We parked along the street as we didn’t see a parking lot around. Another thing to point out is that there are regulars here who enjoy the staff and are comfortable here which we loved to see.

Yelp
I got a huge amount of barbacoa, refried beans, and potatoes with chorizo for less than $9. And it was delicious!! Our server was nice and quick. But the best part was the feline friends who sat and watched us eat outside on the patio. I love that they take care of them and keep them around.

Yelp
If you are looking True Texas Mex vibes with GREAT breakfast, this is your place. The staff were so sweet and had great suggestions. Their corn tortillas are out of this world.
google avatar

Yelp
I give this place 5 stars on the food alone. Some of if no the best breakfast tacos in San Antonio. Taco Loco and Barbacoa tacos are the bomb. Decor and ambiance aren't all that. It's a place to grub for breakfast or brunch
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to meet with students, professors, or our folks. The food and service are excellent. We had chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, one of the favorites. They have weekday lunch specials, but we like it so much we don't mind weekend prices.

Yelp
Great food love going people are nice go often near my in-laws. Very comfortable setting lots of setting and outdoor space

Kayla V.

Yelp
OBSESSED!! I tell everyone who will listen about this place. I can't wait to be a regular once I move to San Antonio. The staff was super patient and kind! It's definitely a hidden gem, but I honestly love that. My family ate for $20, and the food was really good with a great variety on the menu. Plus, it's in a super cute, walkable part of town--lots of adorable spots nearby (especially the plant shoppe)!

Yelp
Takes credit card Quick service Parking available in the streets in the neighborhood Lots of seating available for large parties They make their tortillas in house. The tortillas were super soft Machacado and Egg taco- this was so good. Nice combination of meat and egg. Seasoned well Huevos Ranchero- eggs made well Steak and Egg (9.99)- the steak was average, a small piece of meat. The eggs were cooked fine. Taco Loco (2.99)- had chorizo and egg. It was a good size and had potatoes. tasted underseasoned.

Yelp
My husband and I plus three kids visited for lunch and loved it so much we went back the next day for breakfast. He had tacos, I had the mole enchiladas. For breakfast we both had huevos rancheros with him having asada and me barbacoa. Everything was delicious, authentic and freshly made (including the tortillas). The best part was the value, lots of food for a reasonable price! My husband was in love. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Starting with service, thank You young lady. Couldn't have been better, Ambiance, about the same except, there was a man there years ago named Gilbert, I just want to say "Gilbert Your the Boss. And it reminded me of a dish they made back then, The Chalupa Roberto, Something that could be on the show "the best thing I ever ate " What they make now is a sad imitation, Huevos Rancheros Great, taco de morcia great sauces and other food yup great. But the Chalupa Roberto when Gilbert was there. SIGNATURE!

Yelp
I've been ti El Milagrito numerous times. The food is great, the service is always impeccable.

Matt T.

Yelp
Great corn tortillas, best enchilada lunch special in town and solid carne guisada, wish I lived closer to go more often.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much from the outside but the food makes up for it. A little local restaurant off the Saint Mary's strip. I have tried many items on the menu over the years and I have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is nice and welcoming. The service is always great even when their busy. Definitely recommend
google avatar

Hector V.

Yelp
The food is amazingly delicious and the service is great. The restaurant is very clean we had the chilaquiles plate and it was delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone that wants to have authentic Mexican food
google avatar

Yelp
It's a nice place, friendly service. Outside patio was nice very chill place. Went for good menudo and it's alright but it was a miss for me. Missing the spice.

Yelp
El Milagrito is a N St.Mary's mainstay. The food is well priced, prepared quickly, and delicious. I've come here for breakfast and lunch and it's always like the first time. Plenty of space, there is outdoor seating, but the AC works really well in the summer...enjoy the window sided booths. If there was a drawback, it would be the lack of parking. If you're smart street parking can be found less than a minute away, lucky you wont have to walk at all. Will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for the area. Food is good and staff is friendly despite being a San Antonio establishment. The laredo pkate is badass!
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
Loved my breakfast of huevos rancheros! Potatoes with chorizo was perfect...the eggs were served over a corn tortilla. The salsa was mild but they brought extra which was spicy hot!!! Only caveat is there is no dedicated parking. So parking in the street is the only option. Still worth it!

Yelp
I've been meaning to post a review for the longest time for this neighborhood gem! I've visited El Milagrito over a dozen times and each and every time is delivery of excellent food. I've tried a multitude of dishes and the preparation is always delicious with obviously the freshest of ingredients used. The food reminds me of moms excellent cooking of "Norteño" Mexican food. The tacos are the best I've had and I am picky with the tortilla and fillings. Too many places can't make a good simple breakfast taco and El Milagrito's are hands down my favorite. Well priced food items, friendly, fast servers, clean, family owned and very well operated!

Swaz F.

Yelp
This is a basic locally owned Mexican restaurant serving home made Mexican foods. The tortillas are freshly made and yummy. We ate lunch here. Everything we ordered were delicious. The server was friendly and the prices were more than reasonable. A no nonsense well made Mexican foods.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! This establishment has been here for over 50 years and the have perfected the Huevos Rancheros. Absolutely amazing, the sauce, the eggs, the chorizo potatoes everything! Even the red and green magic sauce on the table. The tortillas were amazing as well, hand made fluffy, with the perfect bite and chewiness. Would recommend!

Jessica G.

Yelp
We loved it from the homemade tortillas to the menudo and caldo. Great place. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Food and service are always great! It's a great place for families. Prices are good too compared to other places. The ambiance is nice.

Yelp
I'm in San Antonio for work, and I eat here at least once a week. It's been non-pretentious for the last 5 decades, so I'm pretty sure this place is still non-pretentious since my last review. Authentic, delicious, simple family-style Tex Mex. - Get a side of nopales (cactus), with everything you order. - The tortillas here ARE SOOOOOO GOOOOOD and chewy in that good way that's so bad that you can't stop. - The Norteno here is SO GOOD!!! Order a side of rice with it, and you have all of the Tex Mex breakfast and lunch pillars on one plate. - Menudo is simple, flavorful, and served HOT. - Chips and salsa- sometimes they have the sad thin corn tortilla chips, and sometimes they got the thick n sexy flour chips. (If you order takeout, no chips for you.) - Horchata must be amazing bc I watched my bro drink a 32 oz cup of it. I didn't even know that was possible. I like to order jamaica, and theirs isn't tart enough. Expect a line on the weekend, but I think it moves pretty quickly. It's insane how much food is churned out by the kitchen here. Great, very hard working team and affordable food that hits the spot each time. Pretty much... this place is the best.

Emily M.

Yelp
My coworker introduced me to this restaurant and it's delicious! Highly recommend. Best picadillo, tacos, avena, hibiscus tea, everything!
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
El Milagrito is one of SA's best kept secrets for Mexican! The caldo was hearty and super flavorful and the Cilantro Chicken enchiladas were super tasty! Homemade corn tortillas are amazing! And the tea is perfect! If you want great Mexican...this is the place for you.
google avatar

Serena L.

Yelp
This place is super delicious and cheap!!!!! My new go to spot. I'm from Houston and it's hard to find a good breakfast spot with good home made tortillas. My daughter loves the pancakes and bacon. I love the menudo and breakfast tacos. Let's just say I haven't ordered anything I haven't liked here.
google avatar

Raven T.

Yelp
As I sat at the bar at 2015 place I asked a friendly neighbor for a recommendation for the best breakfast tacos in San Antonio and she gave me the name of this place. I had just eaten brunch at Nola, which I didn't realize was down the street. Knowing I wouldn't be back in this area again before I left town, I walked over and ordered tacos to go. I ordered bacon, egg, and cheese; potato, egg, and cheese; and chorizo, egg, and cheese. These tacos did not disappoint y'all! First of all they use homemade (nixtamal maybe?) tortillas! Everything just tasted so fresh, as simple as it was, and absolutely delicious even a day later as leftovers. I would come here again and again if I lived here.

Nathan B.

Yelp
I've been going for years and love the food and how close it is to where I live. The wait staff is always friendly and always welcoming
google avatar

Yelp
Great staple restaurant of San Antonio where the locals go for their San Antonian- Mexican cuisine!
google avatar

Yelp
This is my first time trying el milagrito cafe and albondigas, so please keep that in mind. I ordered to-go. For those of you wondering about their current covid setup, there are two outside areas, as well as plastic barriers separating the inside areas. They had tables setup without distancing them, but there weren't enough people eating inside for it to be an issue, so I can't comment on how they would handle things if it were busier. The albondigas was flavorful with large chunks of carrots and zucchini. Overall, I think there were 4-5 large meatballs. More than enough to fill me up. The service was courteous and quick. I have on-campus classes for nursing school nearby and would definitely hit them up again. Next time, I'll try the menudo.
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
This place was super cute! BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS! There breakfast tacos for 10/10 and their Barbacoa was on point! Guys, I don't eat Mexican food a lot but this place was definitely hitting the spot! Definitely would come back and I hope you check it out too! Yummy

Paul V.

Yelp
Excellent tacos and plates. Fun atmosphere. A total classic. Try the Taco Feo - "ugly, but good!"

Ezoro T.

Yelp
I love their pricing and prompt service when ordering takeout. I like ordering barbacoa in the morning and tacos in the afternoon.
google avatar

Kayla K.

Yelp
Love coming here for their tripa tacos. Yummy. Get them extra crispy and you won't be disappointed. I'm here at least 3 times A week. They take time to fry them up so be patient or order them before the rest of your order. It's how I do it. They have lots of great breakfast and lunch specials. Food comes out fast and hot.
google avatar

Meghan M.

Yelp
I loved this little spot, nestled on a corner near downtown. The inside isn't huge but it had plenty of room for people but also social distance. Our server spoke little English but we made it work. I ordered the huevos rancheros with nopalitos. I rarely see nopalitos as a side item, so I had to get it! They were so good and the potatoes were made with chorizo. I really enjoyed this place. It was not only cheap and fast but also extremely delicious. My son ordered a bacon and egg taco and he really enjoyed it. I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Taylor W.

Yelp
Had brunch to go on a day trip from Austin and it was so good! I tried the Chilequiles Tex Mex and was so surprised by how much food was included for only $7.99. It came with a side of two homemade flour tortillas which were perfectly chewy and warm, refried beans, and potatoes. I also tried a potato and egg breakfast taco which was huge and less than $2, also served on the same delectable homemade flour tortillas. They have incredibly flavorful salsas which really tied everything together. I was also beyond impressed at how quickly our food was made. We called on a Saturday morning around 11am and they had it ready in under 10 minutes!
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
My husband and I make it point to stop by for breakfast when we visit San Antonio. Today, we ordered various tacos and Machocado plate. The flour tortillas were good. They have all the proper ingredients to make them taste good and cook correctly. Some restaurants, have stopped using baking powder which makes tortillas look uncooked. The chorizo and Barbarcoba tacos were the best. Would prefer really salsa not liquid sauce..

Yelp
I had heard of this place before and the ratings were pretty high so I was glad to be going when I was invited. It fits in well with my 'hole in the wall' Mexican food places at first glance. However we went a lunch time and I would have expected a very large crowd with such high ratings and in a well known area of town. It was nearly empty with just two tables occupied. That was a little warning bell to me but I thought it was probably a fluke. And maybe it was, I don't know. I checked out the lunch specials and was hoping for enchiladas since my companion said they were really good and they were made with my preferred red tortillas. However the enchiladas on the special for that day were chicken, not what I was wanting. The other special was a Carne Guisada plate. I hadn't had good carne guisada in a while so that is what I got. It was passable at best. While it was lean, it wasn't real tender it also had no real distinct flavor despite having a great color. It was very bland. The sides were the typical rice and beans, nothing special at all. I know, you take your chances with Carne Guisada in this town. You never really know if it will be any good. It seems to range in extremes of both ends of the spectrum. This one hit somewhere below the middle range. Not something I would order again. Maybe it was just an off day. They deserve a second chance, but I won't drive out of my way.

Yelp
Great service. Felt like I was in Southtown. Will frequent again. Would prefer a more expansive GF menu for the community.
google avatar

Kassie B.

Yelp
Had not stopped in for some time... Yum Yum Yum! Taco's Are still as "Yummy," as EVER!!! That's why 54ish years later -EL MILAGRITO- Still Stands...
google avatar

Yelp
I was staying at the Emma hotel and was recommended to visit El Milagrito for good Mexican food. It was delicious and very affordable. I loved their hot sauce and bought some to take home to Miami.
google avatar

Hazel S.

Yelp
Sooo good! I live in Baton Rouge, LA now and have been missing Mexican food from home. I ordered a chicken nachos and some breakfast tacos and it was entirely worth the 1000 calories I probably ate. The flour tortillas taste homemade, the chips aren't too salty, and the meat is deliciously tender (not too dry). It is appropriately priced (meaning that you should be able to get by under $15 for two entrees. I would 100% eat here again.
google avatar

Ricardo G.

Yelp
Great food and great service! Outdoor seating is very nice. Google is requiring me to make this review longer, but I've already provided all you need to know...
google avatar

Saul M.

Yelp
Always, always, always happy to dine here. Laid back atmosphere, friendly staff, good food and price's that really cant beat. Its what a family restaurant should be. The dining furniture is older and may give false impression of overall quality of food to those who live in that fantasy world of pseudoreality (Hipsterduffuss crowds), serves it purpose. Cannot go wrong coming here for mexican food. And even in this unforgiving heat, i would definitely try their Menudo .
google avatar

Juan S.

Yelp
We stopped in here for dinner after flying in. We got seated right away and service was good. Food was great with a good portion.

AD T.

Yelp
Great spot with high quality tacos and salsa in a cozy, warm environment. All the tacos are highly recommended and the salsa varieties are top notch. The only downside is the parking situation.

Ivan S.

Yelp
Caldo de res was good, barbacoa plate was also good had plenty on both plates. Service is quick and very attentive
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
El Milagrito is one of our favorite brunch spots in the entire city. The chilaquiles are consistently delicious, and the huevos rancheros served here are perhaps the best I've ever had in the United States, and possibly even counting the ones I've had in Mexico. Ample space for dining al fresco. Reasonable prices, large portions, and wonderful servers!
google avatar

Brent N.

Yelp
This place is off the beaten path for sure. K ordered the barbacoa taco's and was very disappointed. Barbacoa was very dry if you can believe that but it was, obviously it had been reheated many times. Totally disappointed. On the other hand my wife had the green ckn enchiladas and they were fantastic! Might give it another try but there r many other places probably better.
