The 22 Essential Restaurants in Ensenada, Mexico

"Nights in Baja California mean fire-roasted carne asada and tacos adobada (the regional name for al pastor tacos). Both are here at El Paisa, along with steamed beef head, all served on corn tortillas dressed with mild red sauce, onions, cilantro, and generous scoops of creamy guacamole, The result is a Baja style of taco that you’ll find from Los Angeles all the way down to Cabo. You can also get the meats in other familiar formats like quesatacos (made with melted cheese), quesadillas, mulitas (meat and melted cheese between two corn tortillas), and tortas." - Bill Esparza

El Paisa

"Serving tacos and tortas, and focused on adobada or asada, El Paisa is a tasty taco recommendation. The crew is always busy grilling beef and green onions, and roasting spice-rubbed pork in a vertical rotisserie at this tidy spot with a few tables. It's all supremely fresh, as everything is hot off the grill here. You can even watch as staff members slice the roasting meat right into your tortilla. Dress with your choice of salsas, then add chopped onion, cilantro and other flourishes to taste." - Michelin Inspector

Loved this place! The food, the music, the people, everything felt alive and the atmosphere was very enjoyable~ But the food, the cabeza... it was sooo good!! :)

Google
All you could want out of a taco. The asada has an excellent grilled flavor and the pastor is solid. I really enjoyed the flour tortillas as well. There’s a small parking lot behind the business where you can park. One of my favorite Ensenada taco spots for sure.

Google
The wifey and I took a trip south of the border for some authentic street tacos. El Paisa never disappoints! Lots of choices in taco stands around Ensenada but this one has homemade tortillas... Super important!

Google
After hearing they received a Michelin rec, I had to check it out—and it lived up to the hype. I’m a big adobada fan, so I had to try it along with the asada. Both were fantastic, but the adobada was next level. The tortillas? Easily some of the best tortillas de maíz I’ve ever had—soft, fresh, and the perfect match for the meat. Overall, I’d give this spot a solid 9/10. If you’re in Ensenada, definitely worth a stop

Google
Well worth the relatively short walk from the touristy downtown! We actually came looking for ice cream at Michocana next door, and found this excellent stop for delicious tacos. Everything was freshly made. There was a steady line of customers but service was quick and friendly. Of course also very reasonably priced.

When I asked the pizza delivery guys where the best five star “bueno, bueno, bueno, bueno, bueno tacos” are. They all pointed us to El Paisa Tacos. They were right. Yes, we crammed 8 dudes into the pizza delivery guy’s Rav-4 and he brought us to the very best tacos in Ensenada. I will return again.

Google
Food was overall pretty good. Not much parking and the ordering process is run up to the window, no lines and people shoving to get in. We had tacos and tortas. Was not picture worthy so did not take many. Can mot say I would recommend, may be worth another try.

Yelp
A week later and i'm still thinking about these tacos. Customer service was great. Food was ready with little wait time. Pricing was great $12 USD for 5 tacos and a coke. Freshly made tortillas de maíz. Tacos were delicious! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Me gusto mucho. Pedi una torta de asada muy rica! El servicio fue rapido y bueno. El ambiente es muy padre.

Yelp
Must visit for al pastor when in enseneda. A local spot so you know it is extremely good and very affordable. In a safe part of town also.

Yelp
Ugh, I hate to say it, but this place was way overhyped by the locals and all five people in my crew agreed. Thankfully we had already tried the fish tacos from Fenix and those were excellent as advertised. The line here... woof! We probably waited for 15 minutes and perhaps that also made us anticipate something much better than we received. So what does it boil down to? The tacos were bland! A little salt would go a very long way here and because of that I found myself drowning my tacos in salsa to bring them up to par. Maybe it was an off day, maybe I'm off, but I'm a pretty easy sell when it comes to tacos and these were average at best.

Yelp
About a 20 minute walk from the tourist area of Ensenada, if you like tacos this is a great spot to visit (plus theres a great desert place next door). Meat and tacos were great. We ate standing up since the tables were full. (We didnt see the seating in the back until later). The tacos are challenging to eat since they put so much meat inside that the tortilla fell apart. I didn't care since I like it that way. You place an order an the counter. It was challenging to order since the person taking the orders didnt speak english so well. Highly recommended if your in the area.

Angel S.

Yelp
The food here is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, especially the Torta's. We came here around 12:00 and it wasn't that busy. The dessert place left of the ordering station was also very good.

Erixk S.

Yelp
Great tacos in Ensenada if your here I recommend stopping by. The red Fanta here is great.

Yelp
The tacos are pretty good. I haven't found the best tacos in Ensenada yet; tacos that when I taste them, I say, "wow, that's really good." These tacos, however, are authentic and have flavor. This is my uncle's taco spot. The guacamole is not extra. They get packed, especially at night. Check it out.

Yelp
This place is absolutely worth stopping at. I ordered the queso taco with carne asada and guisado and it was amazing. I believe we inhaled 8 tacos per person cause it was that good!! They have grilled veggies as well as different side dishes that comes with the tacos. Great customer service and the place was clean. Just FYI we ordered all in English and some Spanish and we were happy with our orders. Don't be timid and just stop by and practice your espanol.

Yelp
Every time we are in Ensenada we stop here for our favorite tacos. The carne asad and adobada tacos are always the best. The tortillas are home made corn or flour. You will not be disappointed

Yelp
Yummy. Get there early to avoid long lines. The pastor was excellent. The carne asada cheese taco percent saltiness.

Yelp
After a short night at Papas & Beer in the busy section of Ensenada nightlife. My friends and I did the not so sound decision of walking the mile to El Paisa to get tacos. Don't do what we did. The walk is scary. Get a taxi or Uber. This was actually recommended by an Uber driver earlier in the day. Thank goodness for late night tacos places. It was pretty bustling around midnight when we got here. There were a lot of workers here slicing up limes, onions, and meat. The carne asada and al pastor is where it's at. Get those tacos. Everything was delicious. Service was fast and you can request jalapenos and green onions. So much good stuff. I wish my stomach had more room to eat all the food.

Yelp
Lots of flies. I also got chorro.. Never again, the first taco spot to completely let me down.

Yelp
I always come here when I'm in town craving tacos. It's the typical taco joints where you stand and make your order to the guy making it. I recommend all of the foods they offer and it's pretty affordable (i.e. conversion = $1 USD for each taco). It's usually busy at nights so during lunch, you're in a comfortable environment. They have a parking lot in the back so finding parking is never a hassle. And if you're feeling some dessert, there's a Michoacana next door for some ice cream!

Yelp
Amazing tacos, great service, unbeatable price. I've been coming here since I was a kid. I make it a point to stop by anytime I'm in town.

Yelp
Good tacos...quick service. I've eaten here several times. Most of the time we eat standing because there is no room to sit, but we don't mind.

Yelp
Just spent 3 days in Ensenada at a Airbnb, drove past this place every day and night and it was packed, morning and at 10pm, our last night we said WTF, got to try this, Adobada was as good as any where!! My son ate 4 tacos, I had only 2, they were great!! Even at 10:30 pm there were cops, federales in line in uniforms with their M16's eating tacos. This place is the bomb if your in Ensenada!!

Rebecca B.

Yelp
My favorite place to eat tacos en Ensenada. It's clean, good portions, fast service, delicious tacos, hand made tortillas!

Ashley D.

Yelp
The quesadilla asada was great for me! My boyfriend ordered adobada and was slightly disappointed with service on the wait time and flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
Omg! Great tacos. Pastor tacos are the best and tortas are packed with meat. Asada is also good. Tortillas are handmade. Delicious place to eat.

Yelp
These tacos got me and all of my friends sick to our stomach with food poisoning. The Carne asada was still bloody but we had figured it was just salsa. And the butcher was just flat out rude

Yelp
Best Street Tacos en Ensenada, and this is coming from a resident.. delicious, fast, and super tasty.. Amazing tacos

Yelp
In a town known for seafood and tourism, it's difficult for a taqueria to stand out. El Paisa is a delectable change of pace from the fish tacos and ceviche tostadas you'll likely see advertised at every corner. What is special about this place? 1) The food is ridiculously good. How good? Enough to have 50+ people crowd around late on a Sunday night. Enough for me to say that if there was one and only one meal I could eat the rest of my life - this would be it. This meal experience is worth the whole trip alone. Forget the tourist traps this is as legitimate as it gets. Carne asada tacos is what they do best. What is in that tortilla? Don't know, but even cold it tastes good! Soft, fluffy, melts in your mouth with the meat. And the meat!!! Oh boy.... that is something else. I can't tell if it's a marinade or just the mesquite coals, but the smokiness, juiciness, tenderness.... it's the sort of stuff you can't stop eating even when your stomach has told you long ago to stop. This was the best stop of our short trip filled with lovely, friendly people and phenomenal food. Thank you Mexico, and thank you El Paisa! Please don't ever change what you're doing.

Yelp
damn good tacos here!! whenever i'm in town - i make sure to save some room for the food they whip up here. it's good to be mindful of the crowds they bring in tho, it can get very busy. i came last night at around 7pm and there wasn't too many people there.. so i was able to get my food right away. ordered some carne asada tacos and of course their adobada tacos. super fresh and hot. and the hot sauce they put on the adobada is stellar..... it's pretty spicy but it goes so well. price is reasonable too! especially for the size and quality. they've got green onion cooking on the grill as well as green peppers if you want to spice up your life even more. they have radishes and sliced lemon to add to your taco experience. i reallyyyyyy recommend stopping by this place for an absolutely pleasant meal.

Yelp
taco spot for the locals. best tacos in ensenada. all the tacos are phenomenal. we grab our aguas( horchata , jamaica , pina colada etc..) from the spot next to el paisa.

Yelp
This place has a crowd every evening. We love the vibe around 9pm. I love watching the onions and cilantro jump onto the taco with the taquero's spoon toss. Carne asada is the popular choice. Their al pastor is decent but the carne asada is too good to pass up. This is how I finish every day in Ensenada when visiting.

Yelp
Love this taco stand! It's always a must when we're in my beautiful Ensenada!! You won't be disappointed, I guarantee it!

Brian P.

Yelp
Always stop by here when we come visit family, this place is a must have. Tortillas are great, meat us good and drinks are cold. Quesadillas are good too

Yelp
This is a local favorite. I was stuffed for $5.00 and filled with satisfaction. Outdoor stand with plenty of people in line. Great service and fast. Cars are dropping fans off by the minute.

Yelp
Boy these are the best tacos in ENSENADA. Perhaps in the world. When it comes to asada and al pastor tacos. I've been coming here for the past 22 years!!! The consistency is always there. Very tasty phenomenal tacos. Ingredients are always fresh. Very friendly staff. And no these are not cat/dog tacos for you out there that think some places sell these. You want the best of the best. This is it. 10/10

John A.

Yelp
Excellent Carne Asada Tacos. They make the tortillas themselves- and the guacamole is v good. Prices are very reasonable- much closer to what I'm used to paying in Mexico City or TJ rather than the inflated tourist prices you see often in Ensenada.
