The Best Cheap Meals In Mexico City

"El Parnita tends to get packed after 3pm on Thursdays and Fridays, with people lingering over margaritas, micheladas, and cubas. The classic Mexican pop and cumbia blaring from the speakers and the lively crowds make this one of the most festive restaurants in the area—and potentially the entire city. All their tacos are served on a homemade blue corn tortilla, and the taco carmelita with breaded shrimp and the zacatlan with zucchini are must-orders. Head upstairs to Paramo when it’s time to eat again—it’s a party there, too." - guillaume guevara

"The family behind this small, unassuming open-air cafeteria have mastered the art of the snack, collecting recipes from around the country for years and finally serving their discoveries in an endless stream of small plates (and small plates alone). Tostadas, shrimp tacos, tlacoyitos (fried balls of masa served with refried beans, cream, and avocado), freshly made tortillas, their famous killer habanero salsa: Everything here is delicious and made fresh daily. Head over on the weekend and you're in for barbecued treats—meat or seafood, depending on what's fresh on the day."

The food here was phenomenal. Our waitress didn't speak English but that didn't matter. We got great service right from the get go. Our orders were taken and everything was fresh and very tasty. The shrimp ceviche was so damn good and spicy. I can't recommend this place enough.

Heather Metz DeRosier

Google
Went to lunch here with some friends (one vegetarian) and had a really delicious meal. The servers were able to communicate the menu in English which I very much appreciated. Our food was all delicious. Very favorable and interesting. Definitely will be back!

Google
Unfortunately I cannot recommend this place. Surprisingly it seems to be very popular, I don't understand why as the food is below average for what you can get around here, especially considering the price. Sad and chewy prawn tacos and flavourless ceviche. The service is also far from good. Half of our order was forgotten, the other half was wrong. We had to have multiple back and forth until we finally got all of our orders correct. The bill came all wrong. And had to have it amended twice.

Google
Disgusting!!!!!! First, The service here is atrocious. I don’t speak Spanish and I was ignored for about 25 minutes. I should’ve walked up and left but a friend really wanted to try this place. They don’t have physical menus (only QR codes) and they don’t have a menu in English so ordering here is really difficult and they don’t cater to English Speakers, which is the majority of customers. After I got my food within one minute. Everything was precooked 2 hours ago and nasty and cold and disgusting. None of the food was fresh. It was really flavorless and just spicy. In the pic, that’s cheese. It was sitting for at least a few hours. You can tell when the food is old. This is one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to in my life.

Diego Greñas

Google
One of the best gourmet tacos in the city, no fuzz and great alcohol selection to pair. Always ask for the “taquito” so you can try several tacos instead of only 2. If you’re vegetarian it’s your lucky day! A good selection of vegetarian options, the hibiscus taco is AMAZING. Mondays is pretty calm and my favorite day to visit this restaurant, the decor is best appreciated on the rooms but the open space at the back is also comfy.

Google
This place for some reason was on my list but I wasn’t sure why I saved it, came here for lunch with an old friend and it was spectacular! I tried three of the vegan tacos (yes they have vegan options and delicious ones too) and it was super tasty. Very nice tortillas great flavor, nice old school atmosphere.

Cory Hardin

Google
The only place to make me sick during our trip, and the tacos weren’t even that good either. If I have to take pepto I want the food to have been worth it, but these tacos were just… fine. And honestly, this was the only place where I felt any kind of animosity from the staff, but it’s probably because they’re overworked and too busy. They didn’t have enough people to make service smooth and enjoyable. And finally, there were too many tourists. It looks like a cool spot: it’s big and they have a large outdoor space. But it’s a trap. Go to smaller, more trustworthy places. This ain’t it.

Victor Estrada

Google
The tacos are just "okay" but if you have to wait or are looking for something great there are tons of better places in the neighborhood. Don't order the quesillo taco, is like they want you to stay thin by trying to put the absolute minimum filling possible. Service is good and staff is very friendly.

Yelp
Wow!! I can't get over how good this place was for vegan and vegatarians! I had so many options to select from and each bite was packed with so much flavor and depth. The staff was very helpful and gave me their recommendations as well. The inside is very cozy as well. I recommend stopping by!

Yelp
Our group found this by mistake. What great fortune it was. It's a bustling place with top notch service. The michelada (here called a preparada) was outstanding. Food was otherworldly. We followed our server's recommendations for tacos. Each was unique and outstanding. So much flavor. So much freshness. Think Torchy's Tacos but authentic and twice as good.

Yelp
Buzzy eatery, great for tacos and drinks. Very busy and lots of tables for group outings. Loved all their food options and their drink menu is perhaps twice the length of their food menu. They are packed at night, would recommend going during the day for a better ambience. Get their shrimp tacos, so delicious! The homemade salsas are great on everything!

Yelp
We came here our first night in Mexico City and it did not disappoint. It was packed and there was a simple, written waitlist (no online system) in which if you weren't there, your spot would be skipped. We were quoted a 45 minute wait but it ended up not taking that long - but we had missed our name being called. Fortunately, there was availability at the bar. The tacos and ceviche we ordered was delicious - the lighting is dark but the ambiance is still excellent! There was music paying (from a sound system) and the lights were changing colors around. This was a place were were able to leisurely chill and we didn't feel rushed to order, eat or pay.

Yelp
Not sure exactly what you want to eat? Head to El Parnita and order one of everything! That's what we did, and I can't recommend it enough! The tacos are different than most other tacos you'll find in the city, so it was definitely a nice change of pace. Speaking of pace, this is a spot you could easily hang at for a while and order in a leisurely pace. You won't feel rushed to eat, pay your tab, and leave, though with how fast the food flies out of the kitchen, you'd never guess it! Service is quick, friendly, and knowledgable. You'll want for nothing. It's got some nice indoor/outdoor style seating that lends itself to the wandering musicians that stop by (who the staff will happily ask to leave for you if you're too shy). Also, the ice cold beers. I cannot express how glorious the ice cold beers are on a hot day in the city, washing down delicious tacos. Sure, you can get cold beers lots of places, but something about El Parnita makes it hit different. I can't explain it. Just go and see for yourself!

Yelp
Cute spot!! The place was packed both upstairs (which seems to be a different restaurant) and downstairs but we were able to be seated right away on walk in. The lighting is dark but the ambience is fun nevertheless! Always good to see a lot of people at a spot. Drinks were delicious. The tacos (flor de calabaza and rellenito) were pretty ok - not my favorite tacos but still pretty good. Might recommend the flor de calabaza quesadilla next time! Heads up they will ask if you want guacamole and I misunderstood and they brought out guac w what I believe was grasshoppers. Had to reorder without the bugs and the guac turned out to be yum, pretty standard. Prices are fair!

Yelp
Open air taco spot on Roma, was extremely busy by 2pm....had 3 tacos that were all delicious. The sauces provided were good, the olive oil based one was super unique. Would recommended.
google avatar

Mariana G.

Yelp
I had three "viajero" tacos, which consisted of pork loin and pork leg, avocado, and red onion on corn tortillas. They were very filling, and I would have been satisfied ordering just two. For dessert, I tried the "gelatina de cajeta" and "budin de elote". The "budin de elote" (Mexican corn pudding; kind of like corn bread) was deliciously moist and not too sweet. Such a quintessential Mexican dessert, and El Parnita makes it perfectly. It's a must-order if you're dining here! The "gelatina de cajeta" (gelatin made from Mexican caramel, known as cajeta) was very sweet. I enjoyed the first few bites, but definitely preferred the corn dessert. I went on a Friday during the late afternoon, and the restaurant was quite loud and lively. Not necessarily bad, but something to be aware of.

Yelp
Buenos tacos, buenos drinks y un ambiente agradable. A veces esta algo lleno y hay que esperar. El personal muy amable siempre

Yelp
4.5 Stars! This was recommended several times, so we added to our shortlist. Definitely busy! Hours limited, so be sure to check them. I arrived just before 1PM in hopes of getting the first table, and by 1:30PM it was very crowded! Mezcal Margarita was delicious. Popular place for locals and tourists alike. If you cannot get a table at Mi Compa Chava (boo on 1 hour wait!), walk on over here.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Great service and ambiance. The tlacoyos especiales were the best

Yelp
This place is quite busy almost every day of the week which is telling on just how good the food is. It has an eclectic vibe and just what you think when you think of a restaurant in Mexico City. The crowd is mainly local which is amazing. Menus are in Spanish, so you'll need to use an app for translating (if you don't speak Spanish). My favourite part - they have quite a few vegetarian options and all so delicious. Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Randi C.

Yelp
Walking in I thought we were in for a bit of a hipster experience with tourist prices. Ordered the tlacoyitos (bean + cheese tacos) + panelita (cheese torta). Delish and the perfect amount of food to share with my sis. The two entrees + agua fresca + sparkling water came out to a whopping $8 USD. 10/10 would return.

Yelp
This Mexican gem combines lively ambience, attentive service, and a burst of flavorful dishes. From perfectly seasoned tacos to mouthwatering enchiladas, each bite is a delight. An authentic and memorable dining experience

Yelp
O M G Tacos are forever redefined for me now. The ambiance is loud and festive. They're only open Friday Saturday and Sunday... and they pour all they have into HIGH QUALITY, interesting Tacos. Amazing.

Yelp
Came here with the family and we ordered several pescado and Camarones tacos along with guacamole and a few drinks. I was very disappointed with the fact the tables are quite small and plates they serve are massive. It was so difficult to even eat. I was not too satisfied with the extremely tough tortas, they just tasted a bit stale. I was left a bit unamused by the tacos and ceviche overall. Yes, it does attract a lot of young hip crowd but it probably is more for the types who like to be in an environment that just feels buzzing even if food is average.
google avatar

Amelia D.

Yelp
Came here alone at the recommendation of a friend - as the menu states each order contains one taco. I had one of the tacos of the day with cierdo (pork) and one of their shrimp tacos (the one that starts with an H). Total $102 pesos. One thing that I liked is the tortillas seemed handmade. The tacos are more expensive than at a mercado but you are paying for the ambiance. There were actually a fair among of people there for a Wednesday afternoon. The service was only ok- perhaps because I was by myself. I asked for a glass of water which I received (you have I ask in Mexico - they will not automatically give it) but I also needed to ask for silverware and I noticed that several other tables were given forks and knives automatically. Would def recommend this as a date spot or for eating out with friends.

Yelp
Taco on the right is a Zacatlan, and I forget the one on the left. It might be the Tenango, the one with spinach. Both were super bomb! And our first meal in CDMX. They were out of the mushroom tacos, but they came highly recommended. We also shared the choriqueso and ceviche, everything was delicious. Love the epic item options for the veggie eaters This place is hip, great vibe, long wait times, epic food, great drink, and great service! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Pam L.

Yelp
This place was highly recommended by a friend for tacos. It met expectations but were definitely a bit pricier than other places you can get tacos. I would consider this more of a place to meet with a group of friends to eat for the atmosphere. The torta sandwiches were a bit dry but the tacos were delish. Portions are pretty big here
google avatar

Yelp
In town with some friends for the week and this was the best food we had. I will definitely be back when I can.

Erin G.

Yelp
Best tacos!!!! So elevated, a whole different level of good. Vibe is super cool, staff was so friendly.
google avatar

Francisco L.

Yelp
One of the top Best tacos in town! Nepomuceno is my favourite and a shot of mezcal to wash down the flavor. Be prepared to wait on line since there are no reservations. Decent prices and happy noisy environment.

Yelp
Los mejores tacos del mundo mundial! El taco Parnita y los de pork belly! Y los ceviches (de callo de hacha) tmb!

Yelp
Came here on our last day in CDMX, on recommendation from a friend, and we were so glad we did. A great last meal in the city. The tacos here are better than any I've ever had. I had the shrimp tacos which had fried shrimp with a cornmeal (I think) batter. It was so perfectly fried! All of our tacos came on freshly made corn tortillas, which I am certain makes all the difference in the world. Will be bookmarking for future trips for sure.

Yelp
Items Selected: Water while Waiting Several Spicy Sauces, Balsamic, Salt and Pepper Three Salsas, Limes, Jicama with Hot Sauce Ceviche of Tuna, Shrimp, Jicama, Tomato, Onions La Parnita Torta - Loin and Leg of Pork, Beans, Cheese and Avocado Tlacoyitos Especiales - Pork Loin on Bean and Onion stuffed Shell with Onion, Oaxaca Cheese and Avocado plus Banada Sauce Tacos Don Julio (Fried Cod/Lettuce/Onion/Mayonnaise,) Squash Blossom and Cheese, Lamb and Peppers, Carmelita (Fried Shrimp/Lettuce/Onion/Mayonnaise) Banana and Carrot Cake with Guayaba Cream Amaranth, Cajeta and Chocolate Chips Told by many that the process of sitting down to a meal at El Parnita is often as complicated as it is rewarding, the restaurant clearly showing a great degree of favoritism when taking diners from a nebulous waitlist back to one of more than a dozen open tables, it was after having already called once the a few weeks prior and again earlier on Friday that a party of two was told the restaurant 'does not take reservations,' an answer which a man who identified himself as the manager clearly said was not true as some diners who clearly knew he or the hostess received immediate seating while others were left to sit in the sun for over an hour. Family owned and operated, a mother and sons' operation that has been in business doing the same thing for years while becoming more and more popular as tourists discover the combination of elevated street food and a pricepoint of 25 to 95 Pesos per item, it was with several refills of fruit-scented water than guests sat and waited for names to be called, an arrival nearly seventeen minutes before the restaurant even opened seeing nearly 55 minutes of sitting outside even though the seats were less than half-full. Eventually permitted entry, the delay never explained even though the four-top at which two were eventually sat had now been empty for nearly 45 of the 270 minutes that El Parnita is open Tuesday through Sunday, it was mere moments before a basket containing several Sauces as well as various seasonings, Salsas and sticks of Jicama in a Salt and Spice mixture were presented, the long sticks fresh and crisp while the collection of condiments ranged from mild and Tomatillo based to smoky and downright fiery. Most certainly a bargain restaurant as far as sit-down options in the area go, the limited hours not really making a whole lot of sense in terms of demand but surely making the lifestyle of a restaurant owner less intense, it was after some brief perusal that decisions were made from a two sided menu focused on dishes generally no larger than a few bites except for a few exceptions, the Ceviche of Tuna and Shrimp one of those choices as the plate that cost just a shade above $4USD included a generous helping of fresh Seafood and Blue Corn Tortillas made in house, the eponymous Torta also a sizable portion with shredded Pork Loin and Leg beneath a thick layer of stretchy white Cheese on a Bun that is robust and crisp on the exterior but at the middle almost pillowy soft. Known as one of city's best spots for Tacos, the prices really not much different than the street vendors when taking into account portion, preparation and variety, those looking to maximize their experience at El Parnita are strongly encouraged to take the single-selection that costs a bit per item than the 3-taco platters, the Tacos Don Julio with Fried Cod easily as good as anything found in Southern California at about 1/3 the price while the Carmelita and Squash Blossoms on warm Tortillas were also a great bargain given the quality of the ingredients, only the Lamb falling a bit short as a result of being too finely diced and basically indistinguishable from any other Meat thanks to the overwhelming flavor of Green Peppers. Enamored with the Habanero Salsa, its flavor more that of smoke and spice than the sort of heat that only seems to blunt any sort of nuance, El Parnita's "Tlacoyitos Especiales" unfortunately arrived on the heels of a whole lot of more flavorful items and were thus underwhelming save for the acidic zing added by "Banada Sauce," the desserts featured off-menu consisting of a moist, dense Banana and Carrot Cake topped in a mountain of fragrant Cream and a cup of what was essentially Caramel Frosting and Chocolate Chips mixed with nutty Ancient Grains.

Yelp
Wowowowowowowowowowowow Everything at this place is amazing. Perfectly seasoned, great heat, great textures. I literally can't stop thinking about the meal I had.
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos I had in CDMX! This place is crazy busy but if you can snag a table then you will very much enjoy yourself. I had a super weird but super delicious taco that had mini sausages in it and I wish I could eat it again!! Cool vibe, great table side salsas, and fresh ceviche.

Nicole H.

Yelp
Hidden away upstairs this place has a cool vibe instead with the glass ceiling. The food was good - didn't blow me away but made for a good meal. They had an English menu which was helpful. I ordered the salad and queso maiz quesadillas

Yvette G.

Yelp
The food presentation, service and tacos were incredible. The tacos were creative and tasty. I had the shrimp tacos and they were delicious. The chicharrón had too much sauce and were just ok. The carrot cake was bland. I would return to this fun place to try more dishes.
google avatar

Leela S.

Yelp
I had the best Thanksgiving meal of my life here. Three oveja negra orden tacos: perfectly spiced (and spicy!), perfectly seasoned, perfectly textured. Nopal and longaniza go together so, so well in those tacos! I washed the food down with an ice cold bottle of Carta Blanca. It's a large, lively, popular spot. A quiet meal is not something you will find at El Parnita. However, if a fun lunch (or dinner) involving some simple yet delicious food, copious amounts of beer, and a lot of chatter is up your alley: head to El Parnita right away!
google avatar

Renee E.

Yelp
We stopped by El Parnita after a day of walking from Chapultepec to Roma. True to DF custom, people were out in droves to eat lunch at 2 p.m. (late for us US dwellers.) The place was quite packed, but the crowd was convivial and the energy was infectious. It fascinates me to see business people in their button-down shirts enjoying lunch and a cerveza at that hour. I wish that was a practice we uptight Americans could adopt. Sigh. Due to a small stomach bug, I could only manage an order of quesadillas. I originally wanted the flor de calabaza, but they weren't available. Fortunately, the quesadillas were accompanied with a side of pickled onions, avocado and tomato, and delicious salsas. As per usual, I had a michelada, served in a cold tin cup (I love those.) My brother had longaniza tacos and declared them A-ok.
google avatar

Bruce G.

Yelp
This place has a great inviting look from the street, crowded, noisy. Don't understand the high ratings...food is at best mediocre. In fairness, we arrived near closing time, but they were out of several items and the server was disinterested at best.
google avatar

Izabella G.

Yelp
I highly recommend this cute casual restaurant. It's pretty big, open to the outside, gets crowded quickly. Open 1-6. The rellenito was the only thing I didn't like. But the flor de cabazo quesadilla and the mixed meat special tacos were fantastic. Great lunch in a nice atmosphere. All locals. Good service.
google avatar

Fabiana D.

Yelp
Great taco selection, a little expensive for tacos tho. So its a good spot for gourmet tacos but not if you want a real taco. Food quality is so good and drinks are also great.
google avatar

Lito M.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos and Mexican good I've had ever. Soup was great. Table salsas AMAZING. Go to here
google avatar

Mauri O.

Yelp
We went yesterday for a friend's birthday. We had to make reservation in advance, since the place gets busy most of the time. They welcomed us with a wonderful agua de mamey (some avocado-look-alike delicious fruit). We had an order of squash blossoms (flor de calabaza) quesadillas. The cheese (and lemme say this as a person who LOVES cheese) was absolutely perfect. We also had a shrimp&fish ceviche, wich was just ok, and finished with some tacos. I had a shrimp, beans, guac and cheese taco. Very good. I would say a bit pricey for the content, but not insane. Beware of the salsas. They ARE spicy.
google avatar

Lindsey S.

Yelp
This is a fun, upscale place for lunch. It appears to have a lot of regulars as the place was super busy at 2pm. I tried 3 different tacos here, La Carmelita, a Carne taco recommended by the server, and a seasonal taco. Everything was good but a bit pricy for good tacos in Mexico ($38-60 per taco). Typically I can get a delicious taco at a taco stand for around $10-20. The atmosphere is what makes this place. Great seating inside and out, traditional music playing, and people drinking beers. It was a mix of businessmen/women lunching and younger people eating and hanging out. I would go back for the atmosphere but the tacos were not the best I have had in Mexico.
google avatar

Andres L.

Yelp
Straight from the airport to here everytime! Gracias compadres!

Dhaval S.

Yelp
This is probably the best Mexican food joint in Roma Nte. The staff is supper excited to help you with the menu and the ambience and atmosphere in the restaurant is really casual and chatty. I highly recommend the Don Julio Taco. Must visit!
google avatar

Itai H.

Yelp
Great food. Each taco is a dish by itself, so I wouldn't put it in the same category as other taco places. All fresh, especially the cheese. Will be back!
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
I probably don't need to spread the word, this place already has lines hours long. Highlights included the black salsa and somehow black bean relleno.
google avatar

Kendall K.

Yelp
Phenomenal! Start to finish. Followed the servers recommendations, and left full and happy. great atmosphere, great staff, great time! Cannot say I've had better tacos anywhere.
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
Great service and fast food! The place was packed but we were greeted immediately and got served pretty quickly, great place to come in a large group.
google avatar

Evaristo B.

Yelp
Sí, todo el mundo habla del Parnita, y con razón. Buenísima comida, y además diferente que en otros sitios, otras combinaciones. Buen ambiente, buena decoración y buen servicio. No hay que perdérselo!!
google avatar

Ana P.

Yelp
Best tacos in town!! Hip, friendly vibe. Be sure to get there early (before 2:30pm) as the place gets packed!! If you don't, do wait for a table even if it takes you 20 mins. It will be completely worth it. Absolutely cheap! You can eat really good with 200 pesos :)
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Cute restaurant/bar in a trendy neighborhood. The food exceeded expectations. Really fantastic stuff and I wish we had gone back and tried more items from their menu. Tried the carnitas tacos, tlacoyos, and quesadillas, all great and even better with their salsas, which were some of the best we had while in Mexico City. Our server was helpful and patient with our lack of spanish-speaking ability. The prices were also reasonable.

Eva H.

Yelp
Cutest restaurant upstairs with a stately living room vibe. Warm staff, super attentive, aMazing pork on the bone, full mescal list. Crying rn cause I'm back in LA.
