Best Restaurants in San Antonio | Eater Austin

"The name of this counter service taqueria says it all. Although one trompo is reserved for sirloin, the two spits of rotating marinated pork get the biggest workout. Once thinly shaved, the crispy meat is piled on a half-dozen starches, including pita, ciabatta, baked potatoes, and flour tortillas. Don’t overthink it. Order a box of tacos loaded with cilantro and onions, and devour immediately on the cafe seats outside." - Brandon Watson

No waiting in line, plenty of seating. We ordered the Taco and the 5 Taco Campechanito Plate, which is a total of 11 taco. Enough to feed 3 of us.. Friendly staff. The tacos were most deluctable after adding some lime and that green sauce. Beware, the orange sauce has some heat. The Taco Chronological which aired in 2023, did this place justice. Stop by, you won't regret it.

Google
Phenomenal pastor! Friendly staff. One of the two best tacos I’ve ever had and I don’t know if this was 1 or 2. The other was in Mexico City!

Google
El Pastor es Mi Señor catered our party and absolutely nailed it! The al pastor tacos were incredibly flavorful—authentic, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The sirloin was just as amazing—tender and full of rich flavor. Everyone at the event kept going back for more! Their team was friendly, professional, and super attentive. You can tell they put real heart into what they do. If you're looking for top-tier tacos and unforgettable service, this is the place. Support this amazing local gem—you won’t be disappointed!

Google
This is a great place. They offer al pastor a variety of ways. The food is great and for a reasonable price. Service was straight forward. The restaurant was spacious and clean. Go check it out if you’re on that side of town.

Google
The tacos were delicious but (in my opinion) over-priced $$. I’ll be honest, I got used to the “Tacos de Reynosa” from back home in the Rio Grande Valley where for the same price you get a 1/2 loaded baked potato, a cup of charro beans, 4 tacos al pastor/de trompo and a drink. I’m going to chalk the price up to the location and being featured in “The Taco Chronicles” on Netflix. The staff was courteous, the place was clean and the ambiance was great. In my humble opinion, there are many other places that are on par with these tacos for less money. 11$ for 5 tacos al pastor (no other sides), is a bit much.

Google
We arrived about 5 minutes before closing, we were okay with not being served but the cashier was very welcoming and did not make us feel bad at all. The cooks were very attentive and offered me their different salsas and gave me 2 additional salsas to try. An habanero salsa and a Jamaica salsa. And wow they were all very delicious. It was our first time being there and we will make this a regular spot from now on keeping in mind their closing hours.

Google
13.50 for the 6 taco plate. Came out to 36.00 with tip. We got two plates and two sodas. It was quick and the cashier was sweet and came to check up on us. Very clean place. The tacos were delicious with pineapple 🍍 and salsa.

Google
My husband has been on a mission to find the best tacos Al pastor in SA after having them in Tijuana. We stopped in here after a colleague recommended it, and having seen them on Taco Chronicles. This little shop is in the medical center, but it’s pretty small and easy to miss. As soon as you walk in, you can see the spits loaded with meat, and they shave it right in front of you, so you know it’s fresh. It’s standing room only, but that definitely adds to the vibe. Unfortunately, when we were there, they only had the chicken, but we definitely want to go back to try the steak. If you have time to spare, take a minute to watch the tv in the corner to learn more about Taco Chronicles.

Yelp
¡No Mames! Definitivamente vamos a regresar.

Yelp
Recommend: Maybe Food: Ordered the Taco Plate which is 3 Al Pastor taco as and 3 Sirloin. The taco came with cilantro, onions, lemon, and asked for a side of salsa (Serrano). The tacos come with enough meat to fill you. The meat was tender and not much fat on the cuts, which I appreciate. The meat is being cooked on a trompo right in front of you, so everything seems fresh. The Al Pastor taco comes with a slice of pineapple that, I think, gives it a good contrast to the spiciness of the Serrano sauce. The meat could use a little bit more seasoning but overall, it was a good taco. Service: Service was fast. You order at the counter and pick it up at the end of the counter once your pager buzzes. Everyone is friendly. Ambiance: the restaurant is very clean on the inside, it has a very upbeat vibe.

Yelp
Great tacos! Tasty, they only have Al Pastor but they've perfected their recipe! Very traditional Mexican and spicy good salsa! Good service. Ambiance is very "Mexican street taco" feels quite casual but like everyone knows everyone. Will be coming back soon! They were also featured in Netflix's "Taco Chronicles"

Yelp
Finally got to try this place after hearing about it everywhere and it did not disappoint. Friendly quick service, incredible meats, delicious salsa. I've been back two times since. Authentic flavor and good vibes.

Yelp
Had the tacos Al pastor on corn tortillas. Very good flavor. The tortilla was mid for me. Overall good great tacos
google avatar

Jasmine W.

Yelp
I love this little taco place. There's enough room and seating inside for you to enjoy your meal. I love that they shave the meat off in front of the restaurant so you can see your food being prepared! You can't go wrong with any of the meat choices. I've tried almost everything on the menu and I have yet to have a bad experience.
google avatar

Karina E.

Yelp
They were pretty nice there! The tacos were pretty good! I like the way they cut the meat! The salsas were good but not my favorite. Overall the space was chill, they had standing tables to wait for your food and the place inside for seating is not too big but I expect that they usually have people just do pick up orders.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
By far, one of my favorite taco places in San Antonio. The tacos are so delicious and the meat is tender and flavorful. The salsa packs the perfect amount of heat! And if you eat it there, they give you a boat of salsa that is warmed and it just elevates the experience even more. The staff is friendly and they're always efficient. It's family owned and they have cute decor from Mexico so it feels like you're there. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Brittney P.

Yelp
We were in San Antonio for 4 days and this was the ONLY good food we had. We ordered one plate and then went back for 2 more plates! They were the most authentic tacos we have had in the US. My husband's home town in MX has a place we always make sure to go to when we are there and I'd say these are comparable. We are from Los Angeles so we are familiar with very good tacos. I'd highly recommend this place if you're looking for real Mexican food in San Antonio
google avatar

Paulina M.

Yelp
What's up with the owner? Is he ok? What's the deal with opening a place if they don't enjoy service!!!! Get treated!!!! The food was horrible!!!! The tacos where raw and cold

Jacob R.

Yelp
These are the best pastor tacos in Texas hands down. Felt like I was back in Mexico City.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Very good tacos. Quick service and good atmosphere. Music was bumping inside and out. Had two taco plates! 6 tacos each. So good. Salsa on top was delicious tried the medium and spicy habanero.
google avatar

Wendy R.

Yelp
Mexico City style tacos with real trompo with great flavor! Service could be better but the flavor made up for it
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
¡Sagrado rostro! Ahora entiendo por qué me recomendaban tanto este lugar. Acá vuelvo, seguro que si. El servicio es impecable, el sabor RIQUÍSIMO, las porciones perfectas... Vayan, no se van a arrepentir...

Yelp
Best street tacos in the city hands down!!! Move over West! Man, my experience here was a bit of a ride, but the customer service is award worthy. I'd ordered their food through door dash and the delivery got lost. Even though it was not their fault, the owner offered to remake my order for me to pick up. He even asked where I lived to see if one of his employees could bring the food, but I turned him down. When I showed up, they gave me a taco while I waited for order number two, and he said this one had to be enjoyed in store. Incredible, and I understand why theyve gotten so much media attention: James beard, Netflix, taco chronicles. All the staff was so friendly. The owners mother was working the register and so sweet. I asked if the food was a family recipe and she said no, that her kids were just amazing cooks. The store was very clean and looks fun and modern. You can watch the meat being cooked and the kitchen is very clean. 1000/10.

Yelp
This is my second time going here, and I like this place even more! The first time, I got the Torta de pastor. Which is not a taco, but they put the meat in between French bread-like bread. This time, I got a monster torta ($13). I made nearly 2 meals out of this! Look at these ingredients--PASTOR, SIRLOIN, CHULETA, BACON, PINEAPPLE, ONION, CILANTRO, MAYO, REFRIED BEANS AND CHEESE!! I loved all the different types of meat. They do have different tastes (I may have ate them individually to figure this out). The pineapple added a nice sweetness, and I also got avocado in mine! The bread was crispy but still held all the ingredients well without getting soggy. To me, this is more exciting than getting mini tacos, so I would highly recommend trying this monster torta! The service was fast on a Saturday evening. We got our food within 10 minutes. There is only 1 table for 2. The rest are standing tables.

Yelp
This simple counter-service shop has food that is far beyond the usual expected at a small taco shop. They focus on beef and pork pastor served in a variety of ways. Their food is quite exceptional, as recognized by Netflix, Texas Monthly, and Michelin. Expect clean, modest surroundings, friendly service, and unforgettable food.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Excellent pastor tacos. Got the taco plate. Would love for them to expand their hour for lunch. Super good. My wife got the beef and she loved it as well

Yelp
El Pastor was recently made famous for pastor tacos thanks to Netflix, Texas Monthly, and even CNN. Are they very good tacos? Yes. The best in Texas? Not even close. However, they are worth lots and lots of love and respect for flavor and cooking technique. The menu offers nothing but pastor and asada cuts - no rice, beans, or anything but meat and tortillas. In the open kitchen you'll see the trompos circling the fires as staff slices off your meat. The slightly smokey taste in the meat suggests over roasting. It's missing the earthy sweet you get in many pastor tacos. That's not my flavor, but it's still very good. Don't use the salsa! It's good, but the tacos are good enough on their own to enjoy as is. You'll love your tacos, especially at $10 for five. Expect a wait unless you arrive early. The parking area will fill and the line will be out the door. The interior has only standing tables with only two sit down tables.

Yelp
Authentic Mexico street tacos flavor Tacos Al Pastor are the way to go! What my wife and I look for on a taco

Enrique L.

Yelp
I was a pretty big fan of their tacos, I've been multiple times over the last year. However recently they have not been the same, today was my last straw. The tacos were bland, the salsa and meat had no flavor, my tortillas were cold, and they barely put any meat in my tacos. I was given two peanut sized limes for my tacos, which was barely anything. Taco Bell would've been better and more filling, for a quarter of the price.
google avatar

Dee C.

Yelp
If you enjoy Pastor tacos, please check this place out. Not only is the food absolutely phenomenal, the staff is super nice too. They are consistently busy, which is a wonderful sign of wonderful food & people from my life experience. Went with my family & got the 10 tacos to share. It comes with a slice of pineapple & their perfectly cooked Pastor meat. So good. Delicious hot corn tortillas held the delicious meat, onions, and pineapple with their delicious sauce. I could've eaten all ten tacos by myself. I may go back & do just that. There are so many things to choose from, I'm honestly thinking I'm gonna back until I've tried everything on their menu. Honestly, I believe these are probably some of the best tacos I've ever had in San Antonio. Go try them!!!! Do not wait. Extra bonus is they speak Spanish & are willing to talk about their food with those really interested, as my daughter's partner is in learning how to cook true Mexican cuisine.
google avatar

Rogelio C.

Yelp
It use to be a good Mexican tacos, so far neither the food, ( flavor, quality) are not the same. They lost the path with all the publicity. The service still good. Hopefully one of this days they will try to get in....
google avatar

Fer P.

Yelp
Best tacos in San Antonio, TX. Please understand this is an authentic taco, not a Tex-Mex version. Be early, because even though they have business hours they also work by availability of the food, that mean that if the sold out before the time it's said to close they will close
google avatar

Ana S.

Yelp
My husband is a big taco fan and took his time searching for a great authentic Mexican taco. He came across it on IG and they happen to be on taco chronicles. We came in and got greeted . We happen to get there right before they sold out Alex the owner took the time to ask us how our food was. It was the best tacos de pastor we have ever had. Alex is so humble and we are so blessed to have met him and so proud of his family and the legacy they are creating. All the efforts and love they put into those tacos really enhance the experience. Everyone was very polite. My husband is stationed here and will be a regular!! Gracias por su negocio y su hospitalidad. Que dios los bendiga con su negocio hoy y siempre.

Yelp
Looking for anything but turkey after Thanksgiving, I came to El Pastor Es Mi Senor with friends after practice. This was my first time here so after looking at the menu I noticed that they have specific offerings of either pastor or asada meat cuts that are served Mexico City style and offer no rice, beans, avocado, or queso fresco. The only toppings they offered were onion, cilantro, pineapple, or salsa. Good enough. For my first go around I had to try the order of 5 Al Pastor tacos that was just under $10 so that was a good deal. The dining room offers stand up tables with no chairs while the outside offers small two person sit down tables. My order came up and the food looked very appetizing. The pork meat was tender, seasoned well and came with nice slices of fresh pineapple which allot of place skimp on. All the toppings blend well with the protein and the salsa adds some heat to counter the sweetness from the pineapple....delicioso! Overall, I really liked the Al Pastor tacos and will be back to try more of the different variations of the Al Pastor and Asada proteins. Salud!
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
Good, but not great. We got regular al pastor tacos. The meat was one whole slice which was different and had decent flavor but not enough from what I'm used to. The salsa was good. There's also tables without chairs which is interesting. Over all good tacos, but this is why I have trust issues with tv recommendations.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
Once you have the best El Pastor tacos ever, cooked on Trompo I didn't think I would ever find another place that would ever come close. Well I found it, El Pastor Es Mi Senor is the right up there with the other (hint -Las Vegas) these tacos are amazing!! Quaint little taco place with stand up tables inside and some sit down tables outside. The Trompo style meats are prepared and served many different ways but my favorite is the street style tacos are the best way to eat El Pastor meat. So good, wish I had a few more stomachs so I could continue to eat more. This place hit my must do list when in San Antonio TX.

Warzone P.

Yelp
I really like this place. Salsas are actually spicy and el pastor tastes legit. Good recommendation and worth to try.
google avatar

Fernanda F.

Yelp
My prayers have finally been answered! San Antonio officially has REAL and AUTHENTIC tacos al pastor. I was born in Mexico City and grew up eating tacos al pastor my entire life. For me, these tacos were something we would eat at least once a week, and there's something super nostalgic about them. When I moved to San Antonio ten years ago and realized there wasn't an authentic place, I was a little devastated. Long story short, I saw someone posted these tacos on Instagram and knew I had to go and check them out ASAP. The establishment is small, but is EXACTLY what you would expect from a taqueria. I decided to go for the classic tacos al pastor and WOW! The first bite immediately took me back home. The meat, the tortilla, the condiments...everything was perfection! Yes, they might be more expensive than your average tacos in San Antonio, but they are definitely using quality products. I am a huge fan and will be forever a loyal customer!
google avatar

Eraclio B.

Yelp
These are top quality tacos. Best tacos de Pastor I've ever eaten. Me being from SoCal(LA) these are simply the best?
google avatar

Alexander E.

Yelp
Fantastic! Tacos are excellent. Staff each time I've been, are so sweet. I get the taco plate, comes with 6 tacos, plus both salsas and a pineapple Jarritos. I think if you love meat from a trompo, this place is a must.
google avatar

Yelp
5 de 5 estrellas el pastor delicioso sazón estilo CDMX, sirlon super suave los mejores tacos que he comido en US

Andrew C.

Yelp
I've been driving by this place for a while now and decided to give it a shot. We got there just before 8pm on a Saturday. The Al pastor was already sold out (so you know it's good) so we opted for the sirloin tacos. An order of 5 good sized street tacos is $9.75 and it's plenty for one person. They also have a feature in a Netflix episode coming out all about tacos. They're doing it right here and we can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Fabiola A.

Yelp
This place was good when they first started, now they are super greasy and awful . What happened? I'm not going back
google avatar

Marcos D.

Yelp
This establishment has been featured on Netflix and written up by Texas Monthly for an authentic Pastor Taco experience. The tacos are good, but really nothing special. Had 5 pastor tacos with everything and a volcan de pastor (meat, cheese, onion, cilantro and pineapple on a tostada). The tacos were good, the volcan was delicious and satisfying. Service was quick and friendly. The ambiance is Mexico City street taco stand, you stand and eat. I'll come back and try a variety of items earlier in the day. I noticed the meat was a little dry just before closing.
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
First time trying this place and I would recommend it. I'd come back again. We had the taco box (10 tacos) and a torta. All pastor meat. Each taco & the torta had a slice of fresh pineapple which gave it a sweet, fresh kick! The meat was well seasoned and tasted fresh. I can honestly say these tacos surpass the al pastor tacos from Taquitos West (this has been my favorite taco place for years). They also have 3 different salsas. They have a red salsa, salsa norteña and salsa chilanga. The salsa chilanga was the spiciest to me which I liked! Inside seating was very limited and limited to 45mins. The majority of their sitting area is outdoors. We came during a chilly & rainy day. We sat outside and did what we came for (to eat) and we left! We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and in laws wanted to try a new taco place after a hectic day. We looked up this place and saw that it was very close to us. Once we entered, the place is full of aromatics coming from the meats being cooked. The place is a bit small, but you can tell this is going to be a great place to eat at. Inside was decorated with soccer memorabilia and autographed items. The place is well lit and spacious for people to eat in. There's a huge menu and drinks the moment you enter. We ordered the sirloin tacos, which are small but filling. The service is great when the cashier helped us. Great customer service. Once our food was ready, our sirloin tacos were freshly made and hot. The meat is tender with each bite, and the perfect amount to share with two-four people. My in laws had the Al pastor tacos and those were fantastic as well! For dining, it was great but I know some people might not be used to this. The tables inside are meant for dining where you stand and eat. There's no chairs unless your eating inside. Do with that information what you will. The verdict for me is, I'm going to eat at this place again!

Yelp
"Archbishop, I wanted to come in and tell you I've renewed my faith." "Wait, aren't you the same guy who came in talking about arepas?" "Yes, but I have to confess to you something you would be proud of, and I've come to recognize that, El Pastor Es Mi Señor." "Blessed are those who's acknowledge our--" "The thing is, I've never been to a place where people are so happy, and they rejoice in the environment, and they remember fondly of their homes in CDMX." "Oh, es de Mexico el pastor?" "Bueno, pastor is from Lebanon, but that besides the point." "What an encouraging sign of a Pastor doing community work-" "I almost go there weekly now. Last time I was there, I had a volcán and el orden de tacos but Ive had everything pretty much." "Oh, so he runs a soup kitchen?" "The pastor comes straight from el trompo, none of that precut stuff. Nicely charred and plated immediately with the recommended salsas, the pastor tacos are a dream. The first time I had them I thanked God for such an amazing taco." "We should give thanks for all our bless--" "The pastor, the pineapple, and the combo of salsas add such a flavor explosion. Personally, I prefer the red salsa on the pastor, it gives the right amount of bounce y calor. The green sauce is a favorite of mine on the sirloin and pairs well. Which reminds me, they have two trompos, one al pastor and one with sirloin. I live both of them!" "My son, are you talking about the clergy? This almost sounds like a restaurant review for --" "You know El Pastor was featured on Netflix?" "Oh, they are featuring ministries! How delightful!" "Yes, and Texas Monthly's José Ralat said El Pastor is the best place to go--" "Really?!?!" "-- for the best al pastor tacos. Juicy, fresh, and well prepared, the two trompos are always hittin and once they run out, they are done. But the last time I was there I had the alambre, and it's a miracle how they prepare everything father, I--" "A miracle? Really? Now I know you're--" "Blessed! I know I'm blessed father because the salsas are really good as well, and El Pastor--" "Well, that's good son, but can you confirm your are talking about an actual person and not--" "I know I'm blessed because I was one of the first people to try their latest creation, the Ramen Al Pastor, and let me tell you... ooooooooh-weeeeeee, it was incredible. The pastor adds heft with the noodles, while the cuts of pineapple mixed with the savory, salty ramen flavor mix is a balanced take on a current trend. It explodes with flavor and is a great addition to an already stacked menu--" "Stop son, please stop." "What father?" "I have confirmed that you are talking about a restaurant, I looked up Jose Ralat, he's the Taco Editor at Texas Monthly, who coincidentally shows up on Netflix's Taco Chronicles which in Season 3 Episode highlights... El Pastor Es Mi Señor." "Yes! That's the--" "Yea, that'll be 3 Ave Maria's and 3 Credos and then get the heck outta here. Pro tip: Get there early, they often run out especially after being featured on Netflix. Truly some of the best tacos in town.
google avatar

Donta W.

Yelp
By far the best tacos in town and it's not even close! The sirloin pastor tacos need no tomatillo or picante, the juices from the sirloin is enough! Tip though, to truly enjoy them, eat them fresh! They're still good if you order to go but it doesn't hit the same when you hit them fresh out the kitchen!
google avatar

Mason A.

Yelp
These tacos are so good! Best Pastor around! Served quick and straight off the trompo CDMX style. The pastor has some of those craveable crunchy edges mixed with smooth pork flavor. The street tacos come with the typical pineapple, cilantro, and onion bits...not over done and that is great so you can really get that pastor flavor on the palette! There is limited seating, so grab and bunch and take them to go or there are a couple tables to sit outside on. Definitely coming back for more and trying some more combinations!

Paola M.

Yelp
This place is not what use to be they fired their original taqueros and now taste like awfully , almost no meat in the tacos and we couldn't even finish the tacos, we brought this to the attention of the manager/owner and he got mad at us (we weren't rude) but I guess he doesn't take bad comments well
google avatar

Amie N.

Yelp
Amazing taco place! This restaurant was featured on a Netflix documentary so we tried it and I think their tacos are delicious! I get their el pastor tacos every time and I really enjoy them. My friends who have ordered other items also had no complaints, so I can trust that all of their food is good here. There is not a lot of seating inside, but I would definitely check out this local business for some amazing, authentic tacos!

Carlos C.

Yelp

google avatar

Oscar M.

Yelp
Best al pastor tacos in San Antonio, the taste is comparable to the tacos in Mexico, the place is small with a few tables, and the service is fast
google avatar

Rodel B.

Yelp
The best Al Pastor tacos! We've tried their other dishes and they're good, but we come here strictly for the Al pastor tacos. Just wish they opened for lunch

Mike P.

Yelp
Food was amazing, friendly people, and the ambiance was great.Tacos were the best I've had in a long time!!!
