"El Sabor Poblano is always on our minds—mostly in the context of wishing we had access to an ever-flowing fountain of their mole. Both the sweet and smoky poblano and the herbaceous verde are incredible, whether they’re covering fluffy enchiladas or chicken drumsticks. But make sure that every trip to this casual Rogers Park spot also includes something with masa, from puffy, fried quesadillas to a breakfast of picaditas and sweet champurrado. And since the cute blue-themed dining room (the chairs, walls, and tablecloths are all matching) is open 9am-9pm, seven days a week, you can stop by for every meal—and you’ll want to." - John Ringor

"In her small Pueblan hometown San Juan Pilcaya, María Mozo was a cocinera tradicional (traditional cook), hand-picked by her community to prepare large-scale meals during festivals. At her restaurant in Chicago, she has created a menu that’s a collection of everyday food and celebratory dishes. The menu features the staple green and red pork tamales and a couple of regional specialties. Try the tamales cenizos, a flat and square delicacy that has been leveraging charcoal as an ingredient for centuries, way before it became hip. The flat, fragrant bundle is perfect for sopping up your mole. El Sabor Poblano also serves bean tamales stuffed with beans and mole, and extraordinarily fluffy corn tamales, which you could very well enjoy as dessert." - Brenda Storch

"The menu of this family-run restaurant is filled with dishes matriarch Maria Moso learned to make in San Juan Pilcaya, her hometown in the Mexican state of Puebla. Weekdays are for everyday dishes, like picaditas (thick, chewy rounds of masa topped with cheese and salsa), crispy quesadillas, tacos, and pambazos, while the weekends are for the festival dishes: barbacoa, an herbal beef soup called guasmole, and chicken soup dyed red from guajillo chiles." - aimee.levitt, Eater Staff

Google
This place is totally authentic. Amazing mole and hand made tortillas. The server was so friendly and we talked a lot about the origins of the dishes. I thing he’s the son of the owner. BYOB. Nice atmosphere. Mexican music playing.

Maria Turrubiartez

Google
Amazing food!!! It's family owned and the mole is one of the best things on the menu. Also the pambazos are amazing! I had the champurrado which was good as well. Definitely will be coming back.

Young Choi

Google
Tacos were great partly due to the nice handmade corn tortillas. This place stands out among the many taquerias on Clark.

Paul Kernfeld

Google
Delicious pambazo, barbacoa, picadita, and more in a cute and homey atmosphere.

Evan La Ruffa

Google
The green mole was 🔥🔥🔥!!! Super unique, smooth, rich flavor, and some of the freshest most delicious tortillas ever. The tortilla chips with the guacamole were hot and fresh, and the enchiladas en mole (dark red and smoky) were also spectacular. Tacos Dorados were awesome too … bc why not! It’s also super affordable….

Google
First off, try to be patient. Your food will come, and the good news is it will be delicious! They make their own tortillas here, and they are amazing! The service wasn't great, but our server seemed a little overwhelmed or something. It wasn't really busy, so I'm not exactly sure why we had to ask for our chips & salsa three times before they arrived at the table. However, they were fresh & hot & perfect. So when you go, just be patient. Your food will arrive and it will be a wonderful thing.

Google
Not fancy decor. I had 2 things that were both delicious. The Tamale and the Picadita. The picadita is a bit like a small pizza. It has the thick masa tortilla with the edges rolled up a little, to hold some sauce, with some cheese on top. I had the green sauce which was tasty and not hot.

José David R. Relloso

Google
Very delicious! The picadas are just great! I'll be back for more, now i need to take a nap :)

Yelp
Very good and authentic place for some good Mexican food almost thought it was my moms cooking the beans and rice where totally on point really enjoyed the beans and the cecina was perfect portion and flavor been coming here quite a few times and what gets me are the handmade tortillas and the molo and the hand made tortillas its hard to come by so I highly recommend this place you will not be disappointed trust me

John M.

Yelp
Tasty tacos, friendly service, clean-as-a-whistle space. Two tacos and a soft drink were less than ten bucks.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place but it fell very short to me. Tried it based off of all the reviews. I will start with the positives. First, they make their own tortillas which is amazing. That's very rare to find and a fresh made tortilla makes a taco amazing so that is why I'm giving an extra star here. Customer service is good-they are nice and welcoming. And they do package your food very nicely. However, like another review, the meat was extremely bland. No salt what's so ever. Even the salsa is bland. You can add 2 containers on a taco and drench it and it's still bland. The beans are awful. Watered down, thin consistency. I'm a bit disappointed but glad I tried it.

Jay B.

Yelp
They messed up my order not once, but twice, and the second time was much worse. First time, they got my taco order completely wrong and the second time they didn't put ANY meat on my pambazo even though I clearly said I wanted asada. Only reason I'm posting this is because I ordered takeout, so it was too late to go back and when I tried calling, their number was disconnected! Really frustrating and the fact that they completely left meat out of a sandwich that needs meat makes me think that they did it on purpose. I really wonder why.

Yelp
I love Rogers Park!! The neighborhood is full of hidden gems like this. So right across the street from Honeybear Cafe is this great Mexican spot family owned. Its a simple straight forward menu in Spanish and English. They make their own tortillas and offer three different types of moles. I had the enchildas de mole with a traditional sauce and it was so good. My friend ordered the mole verde and he was in heaven. The food is pretty but I was too busy digging into my delicious dark mole to take pics. Soyou know it was good. Its a simple interior with a wipeable blue checkered tablecloth. Service was good. If anything, they were slow in bringing the check allowing us linger with full bellies. If they sold alcohol, this place would be packed. Good food, homemade, fresh and abundant. What else could you ask for?

David M.

Yelp
The mole poblano chicken was out of this world good. I got it with rice and 4 freshly made tortillas. The sauce was so delicious I ate every bite. I'm not from Chicago but I will be back here again the next time I'm in town.

Fernando T.

Yelp
Service is slow due to the quality of the food So don't be discouraged it family ran It's so worth the wait I'm from Puebla and when I had a bite of a picadita i seriously had a ratatouille moment and felt like a child. The consomé de chivo on the weekends is top notch Tortillas are so fresh The green mole is my favorite So is the carnitas en salsa verde Anything you have will be decadent Mi restaurant favorito

Clare M.

Yelp
It was just horrible. I really had high hopes for a neighborhood place. The guacamole was tasteless and grainy, like it was frozen beforehand, no salt. I ordered the asada tacos and the meat was also not seasoned at all, just over fried and dry as can be. Of the three tacos, only one had a tiny bit of onion and cilantro. The rice looked old and was also dry. The beans... tasteless as well. Only the salsas they bring in the bottles saved the day. Had to ask for a fork since my plate only came with a spoon. The two girls as servers were not particularly helpful explaining things on the menu, so we ended up googling most of it. Will not be back.

Zeb H.

Yelp
Every time I visit this place, I'm blown away ! The picaditas are absolutely sublime. El Sabor Poblano is a brilliant jewel in the diadem of RP's crown.

Senay K.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, great service. At first I was hesitant since they only have corn tortillas which I don't like the texture of but it was amazing! Fresh, hot, like a hybrid between corn and flour. The hibiscus was refreshing. The 2 carne asada tacos were also delicious and I knew the chef put attention to detail. I'm still craving this place. Prices are around $2.75 per taco!

Ramon B.

Yelp
This place is great. Looks and runs like a family owned restaurant and it shows. The tacos were delicious, the homemade tortillas were perfect, and the service was great as well. These are the best tacos I've had in that area.

Jim N.

Yelp
Heard a lot of great things about this place. Maybe we came on a bad day but it wasn't an experience that makes me want to return. We ordered the mole chicken. It took about 50 minutes to get the food. It was a $17 plate with a single chicken thigh. I walked out with the feeling the person taking my order didn't want us to come back. We were not rude or demanding at all. There are several Mexican restaurants in the area that offer much more value and a better experience.

Elvin C.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood and planning a second visit. On our first we went with the (goat) barbacoa. There are soups and hot drinks, but for middle of the summer, we went with other options. The barbacoa comes with fresh (yellow) masa tortillas from the grill which makes the meal a double treat. We also ordered the cheese quesadilla (I believe labelled as Oaxacan on the menu) - not a flour tortilla and melting cheese combo, but a fried masa with a lighter fluffier cheese. Also did get a picadita, which is similar to and as good as sopes found elsewhere on Clark St. made of fresh masa. Planned for a return visit (before the fall/winter) is trying out their cesina and certainly one of their green mole/pepian verde dishes with tamales.

Brendan B.

Yelp
The tacos dorados are instantly and permanently going to be in every order I make on future visits. Fantastic. I also ordered the red mole chicken. It reminded me so much of my in-law's home cooking from the flavor and consistency of the beans to the rice to the rich mole. Everything that is so spectacular about southern Mexican cooking was so well represented in the food I had. For me, this is definitely a "must try" restaurant.

Wendy Z.

Yelp
so yum! got a quesadilla with zucchini and mushrooms and a picadito with green sauce, and was such a fan. the quesadilla was deep fried which i'm not used to but it tasted so fresh and crisp and was chuck fill of nicely seasoned veggies and topped with lettuce, sour cream, and cheese. the richness was balanced very well from the salsa which was zingy fresh and crisp! the picadito was simple, but an absolute treat, the star of the show being the homemade masa :) the corn was fragrant and the slight char rounded out the decadent cheese and sharp green sauce. so reasonable too, around 3.25 for each!

Marlene T.

Yelp
Never ate food from a Mexican restaurant that doesn't use salt or pepper Maybe I ordered on the wrong day. Maybe a hit or miss spot? But I ordered food from this restaurant due to the positive reviews, however, my experience was quite the opposite. I ordered 3 steak tacos and a red mole dinner. My steak tacos had zero flavor as well as the red and green salsa, i had to put salt and my own seasonings to get a little bit if flavor. The only thing with flavor was the lime it came with. I tried the mole and again no flavor--It was oily and grainy. The only good thing about this spot is that they make homemade tortillas. I was very disappointed with my experience and not sure if I'll try again.

Diana A.

Yelp
Everything from the picaditas to the tacos is delicious!! Definitely one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Chicago!

Becky R.

Yelp
The picaditas and quesadillas are light and crispy, not oily. I would have eaten twice as much happily :) My friends liked their food as well (weekend goat special with rice/beans/tortillas).

Lisa S.

Yelp
Food is good. Large part of our order was forgotten. I called the restaurant and they seemed bothered to replace it. Hoping the chicken mole is as good as everyone says it is. Wish we would've had added salsas for our tacos. Disappointing.

Eddie U.

Yelp
Been trying different Mexican foods from different regions, and this one offers Poblano style dIshes. Obviously their red and green mole is their signature. They are located on Clark Street where taquerias and Mexican restaurants rule the north side. They have their job to distinguish themselves from the rest. Locale is simple and charming. Accessible vIa Clark bus and plenty of public parking around. Their prices are friendly to the budget for "eating out". Hope them best among their competitors and viva el mole poblano!!!

Gladys M.

Yelp
Super yummy Mole and their picaditas(red and green) are also to die for. recently tried their cheese tamales which was very good. t hey only take cash

Roger M.

Yelp
5pm and we were hungry, found this place on the Yelp map because the Mole photo caught my eye... one hour later El Sabor Poblano did not disappoint! To drink: order one of their fresh squeezed juices I went with Tamarindo, no regrets it was great.

Andrea Z.

Yelp
El Sabor Poblano is an excellent, delicious place! The place always is super clean, super friendly staff and I love their food! You really feel the authentic taste of Mexico!

C C.

Yelp
The food is good! Simple menu and great flavor. My only complaint is the service is not great. Some items my party ordered were out of stock. The server did not speak English - it was hard to communicate.

Alex M.

Yelp
So so so delicious. Easy 5 stars. Not only is the food here next level - the service is so friendly and helpful too. I would highly recommend.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
AMAZINGGGG! Couldnt be bothered to take a picture before we started inhaling the food. We've been trying to find authentic restaurants for months and their food was perfect. We got the pambazo, picaditas, and mole enchiladas. The enchiladas were full of flavor and the rice was great, none of that fast food mexican rice. The pambazo and picaditas were so simple yet so flavorful as well. Definitely coming back!

Giacomo P.

Yelp
One of the best Mexican restaurant I've been to in Chicago! The hand made tortillas make tacos and everything else amazing. Definitely try the Mole Rojo.

Kristen S.

Yelp
I love the quesadillas and tacos dorados! Always super crispy and reminds of the food I grew up with in California. I always call ahead and then pick up however, the atmosphere at the restaurant is very nice. I love that Sabor Poblano is family owned and service is always great. For the price, this is a great place to eat and get your moneys worth.

Sara P.

Yelp
I am in love with the picaditas sencillas here. I usually order one with salsa verde and one with salsa roja. My husband and I usually split an order of tacos dorados with tinga as well. The food is fresh and a good value, and makes for a delicious lunch on the lighter side. Definitely check it out if you have not already done so.

Rhonda W.

Yelp
Food was very fresh and delicious. Homemade tortillas, fresh, light and creamy guacamole with piping hot out of the fryer tortilla chips. Service was delightful. Will definitely go back to try the soups and tamales.

Kevin N.

Yelp
Delicious food (never had Poblano food before), nice small and cozy restaurant. Will definitely be coming back again!

Isadora C.

Yelp
This is the best authentic Mexican flavor, the food transport me to my grandmas kitchen. Woow you won't get disappointed. Don't forget cash !! They only accept cash. Every dólar I payed It worth. Delicious!!! Mole Poblano/ Mole Verde / Picadas / Barbacoa / Consomé de Chicvo/ Arroz

Sasha S.

Yelp
Came in for dinner during work and got the taco dinner, Al pastor. I wish I took a picture but didn't. The tacos were fantastic and the tortillas are freshly made. Would definitely come back and recommend to people.

Berenice W.

Yelp
The tacos are delicious I would definitely recommend. All their tortillas are hand made and filling. However some dishes are a bit different than expected.

Aleaha W.

Yelp
This place was good. I just wish they had a chicken breast or chicken taco on the menu. Overall not bad, got the Mole it was pretty good!

Salvador H.

Yelp
What a great place we discovered in Rogers park. The owner took the time to go through the menu and point out some delicious vegetarian options for my wife and I. We had a rough morning in our search for a Mexican breakfast spot. Something very easily found in the Southside of Chicago. Not so easy on the Northside in Rogers park lol. Well after 3 spots of no options and just bad attitudes, this was our last Hail Mary spot before settling on an American breakfast joint (eye roll). Sometimes we just need to feel the comfort of our motherland. well, this placed delivered. The agua de tamarind is fresh! the pambaso and everything we ordered was delicious. It's a place we will frequent going forward. Yum!

Janet A.

Yelp
I just stopped here by accident as the title attracted me. It is not your typical northern Mexican restaurant. Family owned - everything handmade, including the corn tortillas. They can do vegan, vegetarian and steak of course. Delicious flavors and a very helpful young man at the front, explaining many things to me. I want to try everything on their menu! Delicious!!

Maureen H.

Yelp
Just had great green mole chicken (me) and chicken enchiladas (partner) delivered. Hand made fresh tortillas. Super good. Definitely a cut above. The menu is not online, but trust me on this. Or ask what they recommend when you call. Cash only, so figure out the tip in advance so you can just do exact change

K C.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! I've been looking for a Mexican restaurant to love and am so pleased we found El Sabor Poblano. Everything we ordered was delicious - the enchiladas, the quesadilla with Tinga, the pamboza and especially the picadita con carne! We didn't quite know what to order (we didn't recognize some of the items on the menu) and really appreciated the guidance we received. The salsas were tasty with good kick and Price point is excellent. This will be my new go to spot!

Noemi G.

Yelp
We came here for my mom's birthday (who is from Puebla, Mexico), and this place delivered, phenomenal service and truly authentic comida poblana. Plus, it's BYOB! Recommend this to anyone looking to try a different type of Mexican food - cuisine from a southern region of Mexico which is often underrepresented but deliciously remarkable.

Nancy A.

Yelp
Best most authentic Mexican restaurant in Chicago. Fantastic. The owner's son showed us avocado leaves that are sent to them from Mexico which they use as a subtle herb to flavor some delightful dishes. The Barbacoa is wonderful. The green mole is wonderful. It's all wonderful. And it's child friendly.

Patrick H.

Yelp
Wow. This was a find. In a sea of taquerias on North Clark this Poblano-style restaurant really stands out. Small menu, attentive and pleasant service. Cucumber-infused water was a nice touch. Everything was from scratch but worth the wait. Picaditas (street food, fried masa bowl with carne asada, salsa and cheese) was a great starter. But HOLY MOLE! Super complex and delicious mole sauce chicken with fresh housemade tortillas. Will be back for sure.

Laura H.

Yelp
Family-owned restaurant featuring food from the Puebla region of Mexico. I especially love their picaditas with either mole verde or mole rojo - I can't decide which is better. The owners are happy to explain the menu and make suggestions.

Nela V.

Yelp
My new favorite Authentic Mexican food. The food is so good. The costumer service is delivered by the son of the owner and he is so kind. This is the place that my husband and I like to go back every time that we think of Mexican food. Love it!!! :-)

Mike M.

Yelp
What a great restaurant! Rick Bayless should come and get some lessons! The enchiladas mole was fantastic. Best dark mole sauce I ever had. A perfect balance of ingredients. The tamales are the best on the north side. A hard working family staff does a great job and will explain the different dishes with a big smile. I will happily go back soon! Mmmm!

Hillary S.

Yelp
So delicious. A group of four of us tried about half of the menu on a Thursday night and everything was perfection. Great, friendly service, BYOB, and stunning food. What more could you want!

Saba B.

Yelp
Expect great things from this new restaurant. Owned and operated by a Mother-Son duo. 1. How ever is hosting when you arrive will talk you like family it's a laid back environment so seat yourself. 2. BYOB... Bring your favorite drink to accompany your amazing tacos, quesadillas, etc... 3. It's a simple menu... But don't let that fool you. The flavors in ever bite you take will keep you smiling. I usually drown my Mexican fare in the sauces but with this place so I did was squeeze a little lime juice and we were in business. 4. Talk to the host he is extremely knowledge about Mexican food and drink history. I got a little lesson on tequila and mezcal on my first ever visit. 5. Let's talk food. I had al pastor tacos (A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.) 2nd had the carne pescaditas. My husband had the Verde Mole and same tacos. Everything is made fresh and you can tell. I look forward to seeing more options in the future, but for a new establishment this was perfect.

Donna B.

Yelp
A friend of mine had recommended this place and I ordered what he ordered and safe to say I was very impressed. I'm a fan of finding the authentic Mexican places and this place is definitely one of them. The Mole Rojo y Mole Verde are both amazing here and the flavor is outstanding. 100% bringing my other friends here and recommending the place.

Philip R.

Yelp
As all of the other reviews have stated, this is excellent, authentic Mexican-Poblano food. I had the enchiladas mole, my wife had the goat barbacoa. The warm tortillas that arrived with her meal made for a delicious experience. My enchiladas mole could not have been better, the mix of chicken and pork was very flavorful and savory. Why only 4 stars, instead of 5 stars you ask? While the goat meat was tender and flavorful, it was also barely warm, bordering on cold. I'm guessing for obvious reasons, they don't microwave anything, which is a good thing. However, they need to find a way to keep the meat warm. Inspite of that one anomoly, it was still an enjoyable dining experience and we will return for more.
