El Sazón Oaxaqueño Review - Mar Vista - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"El Sazón Oaxaqueño is a Mar Vista spot that has a bit of everything on its menu, including a large mix of Oaxacan, classic Mexican, and American-influenced dishes for those in search of a heavyweight burrito. This 20+-year-old restaurant also makes some especially spicy costillas en salsa verde, pork ribs gently stewed in tangy tomatillo salsa until they reach optimal tenderness for optimal satisfaction. El Sazón serves great sweet and savory chiles rellenos filled with chicken picadillo too. This shredded chicken salad comes with hints of cinnamon and raisins to create that flavor contrast Oaxacan food does so well. You also, quite literally, can’t miss the restaurant’s bakery on the way out, so grab a fluffy concha or two for the road." - Sylvio Martins

Google
Amazing! Everything was so flavorful, our server was very nice and friendly. The establishment is clean and neat. The horchata was my favorite, the mole was sweet and not spicy at all very good. Definitely recommend.

Google
Excellent food, their guacamole was superb. The guacamole was so good I got some to go, and she added tortilla chips which was thoughtful. The tortilla chips were also delicious, and tasted freshly made right there. The service was timely and friendly. We'll definitely go back.

Google
Bakery wasn't too great. They need more variety, coffee wants of the surrounding population, Mexican hot chocolate and a few Mexican finger foods to OVER RUN the place out. I gather that even though they share the same place the restaurant and the bakery are two separate business. The restaurant is good food but something is missing. The bakery is just missing period when they have a good business potential. Good location. So-so parking. Food is good in restaurant side.

Have wanted to try Saxon for a couple months and finally had a chance to stop in for lunch. The restruant and bakery are right next to each other, it is very clean and spacious. The staff is welcoming, chips and salsa are delicious and the food is delicious! I ordered the pork wet burrito with red sauce, the red sauce is their mole, I am not a big mole fan but this is amazing. The portions are huge, so if you plan on hitting up the bakery make sure to save room.

Google
Just had an incredible experience eating here!! We have both been to Mexico before (specifically Oaxaca) and this food transported us back immediately. We got the mojarra frita and the alambre de res- both dishes were frighteningly good!! The fish was seasoned and fried to perfection. The beans are 😍😍😍. The alambre was topped with the most delicious cheese. Everything here was 10/10, I wish I could give more stars!

Google
The chips are off the hook. I have a minimum of 2 refills because they are hot, crispy and greasy. The ribs in salsa verde will make you so happy to not be vegan. The mole is pretty good too, a lil sweet for me. This place does it right.

Google
I have been working in the area for 3 weeks now and I have been to this place 3 times already. Great food and nice service! I will continue to come here

Got a cup of champurrado, while getting some fresh delicious bread from the connected panadería: Pan Dulce. They have really tasty pan and their orejas are super buttery and crispy! Bring cash!

Yelp
Food is delicious and authentic. However service is a little slow. I'd definitely come again though!

Yelp
I've been here several times and I've always thought they were decent and reliable Mexican food ordering tacos and burritos, I ordered the mix plate and I got some balled up pork and crumbs which is supposed to be ground Chorizo and tiny slice of asada... I will not be back.

Yelp
The chicken mole enchiladas were bomb! Flavorful and tasty just like homemade mole. Definitely coming back for this plate.

Yelp
A coworker recommended me the food and it was good! Plus it was convenient to my workplace since the place is located at a nice walking distance. I had their breakfast chorizo burrito and orange juice which was authentic just by taste of it.

Yelp
Was just there had ordered to go then changed my mind and decided to eat there the girl working on this shift was not helpful at all and because I had ordered to go i couldn't ask for anything else from them like I was nice enough to want to throw away my trash since I ate there the girl said she couldn't take my trash I asked what's the difference if I ordered in they clear the plates and from the table she said not if you order to go. Took thrash with me definitely NOT going back. Food not all that in fact chicken soup was BLAND no flavor whatsoever. Gave 1 star cause I couldn't post review without adding star but really it's ZERO stars.

Yelp
I had not been here for several years and I am glad I came again. We had a wonderful time and as usual we fully enjoyed our food. It is still the same little cozy place. The Panaderia next door (which is part of the restaurant) always has fresh bread and we always get some to go. I recommend this place. I had the Tlayuda as I had often done in the past and it was as good as I remembered it to be. TIP: when ordering a Tlayuda, you may want to share with someone, unless you do not mind taking half of it home.

Belen S.

Yelp
The food is so good I've been here twice and I wasn't disappointed the Burrito Mojado and empanadas 10/10! But I do see why they need help in their customer Service. While I was waiting for my order I saw someone try to order and they ignored her and then once the lady left the lady at the register said "gosh thank you" because they left.

Yelp
Delicious home made flan and horchata while waiting for laundry to finish washing next door.

Yelp
love the food so much just that customer service needs better improvement, the location is spacious!

Astrid L.

Yelp
I was looking for something to eat in the vicinity and wanted to ensure it was a local shop in our efforts to support small businesses. My husband and I ordered the Tlayuda Mixta to share and it was yummy. The size was good for the two of us. We also wanted to try their mole on the side so they have us a small bowl of it and it was also delicious. Thank you for amazing food. We will be coming back!

Yelp
Came here recently with my mom for the first time. I looked over the menu, which was different for me... as I think the food from Oaxaca isn't the type of Mexican food you typically find in Mexican restaurants. I decided to order the beef soup because it seemed safe. My mom ordered the mole, which I believe she enjoyed. My soup came and it tasted kind of weird. I did not like it. I tried adding lemon and hot sauce but even that didn't help, so I finally told the waitress and she exchanged it for their chicken soup. Took forever to get my replacement meal, and when I got it I felt like it wasn't that far off from the last soup but it was a little better. I might come back here to try something else in the future but for now I'll stick to places I know I like. The bakery that's attached to the restaurant is delicious though. Lots of choices and it's also inexpensive.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years to purchase their mole negro tamales to take home and serve to my friends and family. Very reasonably priced. I have been to Oaxaca, Mexico too! The food here is very authentic and delicious. I recommend it very highly.

S T.

Yelp
Great unsuspecting restaurant that might be a new favorite for me in the neighborhood. I highly recommend any dishes with the red mole. Give it a try if you like Oaxacan food!

Yelp
Trying for the first time tgis Restaurant. We ordered the following: Pork ribs in salsa verde Chicken rajas tamales Chicken mole tamal oaxaqueño Memela A drink of tamarindo Pork ribs were great, there was only 1 raja en the tamal had good flavor. Mole tamales needed salt, the masa was dry, just tasted like an old tamale. The memela was so bland, a tortilla with beans and cheese, no flavor at all, the beans had a burnt taste, the tortilla was not fried, very disapointed. Need a lot of customer service, Ask me me if I would come back. Of course not. Sorry

Yelp
I have eaten here twice. The first time was a few years ago; I got takeout and I remember thinking the prices were wonderfully affordable, service was pleasant, and the food was good. The second time was in 2018. I ate in. Everything was disappointing. The chips were nearly inedible. The other things we ordered were okay or not very good. It seemed the prices had gone up a little and quality had declined. But the worst part was the customer service; she was not very interested in helping us; she left us hanging even though I had mentioned we needed to go soon; she refused to take the coupons that had brought me in (saying they no longer participate in restaurant.com, which I didn't know, and she didn't offer any kind of gesture to compensate, like a little cookie or 5% off or anything). We felt unimportant, though there was nobody else there. If the food had been as good as the first time, I would give it at least one more star. Maybe I'll give it another try someday; I'm over there a lot.

Yelp
Chill vibes went here for lunch had the mole tamal which tasted like it maybe needed more sal or flavor but the texture was good Also had chilaquiles and it was good & some OJ ! Nice spot to spend your lunch!
google avatar

Yelp
Food and service are outstanding I'm bringing my family to my new spot. We got a wet burrito a halambre and a mole order it is delicious can't wait to come back.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Had the Oaxaqueno and eggs breakfast burrito. I'm sorry to say but there's no major difference compared to the store bought. I do like it's made from scratch. I'll keep trying other things on the and continue to update. Service is great, no issue there.
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
This place has horrible customer service which is why I won't be coming back. The food was okay (when I received the correct order) which is a shame because they really don't treat their customers fairly. I will be taking my business somewhere else.
google avatar

Isabel C.

Yelp
When I'm missing the great flavors of Oaxacan cuisine I come here to get my fix! Order a hot chocolate and walk next door to pair your hot drink with a delicious sweet bread! Best bakery, what's a Oaxacan meal without the chocolate con pan!
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
Ordered the chilaquiles and it didn't come with eggs. Instead it came with a thin piece of dry jerky like meat. The sauce was ok and the beans were great. Coffee was burnt. The service was sweet and and they're kind. I'm sure their lunch is much better. Will try again and update.
google avatar

Itsmimi G.

Yelp
Used to be frequent customer of this place. Customer service has changed so much. I used to live in the area when I was little and this was the weekend spot. But not too long ago my mother asked to use the restroom and before we didn't even have to ask we would just walk. They actually stopped her and said she can't. My mom then cancelled her whole order. Worker was rude and didn't even explain why. Never coming to this place again. Bakery next door said they had nothing to do with the restaurant but when you actually know the owner it's so funny see them lie .

Yelp
The resturant offers authentic oxacan flavors. I recommend the camarones al mojo de ajo, tamal con mole, and tinga tacos. I have been a customer since 2004. The quality and service is exceptional.

Yelp
the food used to be delicious but lately i've noticed its not as fresh as before also what use to take 10 min to pick up now is more like a 40 min phone order they all seem lost at the register.
google avatar

Rocio A.

Yelp
Update: Food is still good, service is getting worse, Mayra is always in a bad mood, and not accommodating at all. The food is great, but it is so not worth the drive if you will be greeted terribly and served forcefully. Not sure if I will be coming back.

Michelle Z.

Yelp
Incredible Oaxaca food. So absolutely delicious. The mole is the go to. Their food is incredibly homemade. They make their own tortillas, fruit juice, and everything from scratch. There is also an attached bakery with the most amazing fresh baked pastries made in house. This place is so amazing and everything is incredibly fresh. The best part is how attentive and amazing the service is. Just a tip--they will take off 3.75 percent if you pay with cash. YOU MUST try this amazing restaurant.

Yelp
Been coming here for about 20 years! Was so happy when they expanded the bakery. Burritos are my favorite here. Friendly service

Joshua H.

Yelp
Love the food and the service! If you want great authentic food come here. The server that attended me( I think his name was Ricky)was very helpful in helping me decide on what to choose. 10/10 definitely coming back

Yelp
My mechanic is across the street from this place and in the past 10 years they have grown from a bakery to a restaurant. I was driving by tonight and decided to try it, I was reading about the carne Asada tacos and the two stars the sisters gave. So I was hesitant... Apparently the mole is good and I was going to order it, but at the last minute I went with the carne asada, it was good, well seasoned and good flavor. This place is simple Mexican food, similar to home cooked, but home cooked comes with the love, the service is great here, but don't come here expecting to get blown away, come to have simple reasonable Mexican food and you will leave satisfied. It's local and it's reasonable, the bakery next door they have has good Mexican breads and desserts...

Yelp
The Oaxacan regional Mexican food at El Sazon Oaxaqueno is great and a bargain as well. We had the costillas en salsa verde (pork riblets ribs in green sauce). The quality of the fresh pork and the homemade salsa verde are fantastic. The plate comes with beans and rice. Also world class is their unusual chicken mole tamale. This is one of the best tamales I have ever tasted. If I had any room left to eat anything else, believe me, I would have. Everything here is flavorful and fresh. The important thing about El Sazon Oaxqueno is that the food is homemade. The beans still have whole beans in them, which signals that they haven't been sitting in a pot for a long time (because then the beans would be more broken down). The service is pleasant--as is the check. Most meals cost around $9 and are fantastically tasty, fun and filling. This is not a fancy restaurant, this is a REAL restaurant. This isn't the kind of place that stumblebum Guy Fieri of Diners Drive ins and Dives goes to: this is muy auténtico! All Cash only, no liquor. Everything is great!

Yelp
What a Great Place! Best Chicken Soup in Mar Vista! Really healthy, good if you have a cold or just to warm you up. The Chicken Burritos and Taco's are really good. Not real heavy, more on the healthy side. Restaurant is family owned an operated. Very clean and they have a bakery right next to the restaurant. Nice people, nice place. Yelp
This is the real deal. Oaxaca the while family works here to keep it real. Mom, daughter, mom and the bakery to boot.

Yelp
It pains me to give this place so low of a rating, but my tastebuds cannot lie. The food I ordered was bland and blandness is a huge dealbreaker. Food: I tried two of the tamales on the menu, a red chicken tamale (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/f3J-mkOztaWSPH18EWzL8g?select=No9Utw5OU3smWW7VLIYhJQ) and a green tamale (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/f3J-mkOztaWSPH18EWzL8g?select=JrxbwisOAHgXDcojGTuccw). Both had perfectly cooked meat inside in terms of texture, moisture, etc. but they tasted like absolutely nothing. Going out on a limb, I also tried a hot chocolate drink called champurrado (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/f3J-mkOztaWSPH18EWzL8g?select=9kvWccjecpNxoIq-JVAMvQ). Drinking the glutinous boiling mixture was another adventure in tastelessness. The thing did have hints of chocolate and some grains mixed in, but it was mostly watered down. I would not get this again. Atmosphere: It's pretty ghetto in here. To their credit, they do have a bakery that looks decent. Service: We had to flag down the waitress to get anything. Also, I think they cater to a mostly Spanish speaking population. Synopsis: My tongue cried out for something more! It didn't have to be spicy or anything... I at least wanted the chicken to taste like meat. On the flip side, I bet that meal was one of my healthier dining experiences.

Yelp
Food is great, service is not. The mole sauce is great on some days.

Yelp
I've been going to this place since I was a teen but today, today fellow yelpers it was different. Amazing. I ordered the puerco costillas en salsa verde... wow. I've never had costillas in my life (I don't think) and sheeeeeeesh were these babies delicious. Piping hot and so good and fresh! Th boyfriend agreed! His reaction was "wow, hahah woooooow this is pretty delicious!!!" . I agreed! We also order s a "side" of nopales salad but it filled the entire Togo box! The barbacoa de chivo (goat) was delicious but maaaaannnnn those costillas were everything. I'm literally salivating just thinking about them. This place is located in a shopping center where you'll find a little grocery mart, laundromat and party supply store!!!! Please please pleaseeeeee support this small business it's so so so soooooo gooooood

Yelp
El Sazon Oaxaqueno is a very unassuming, hole-in-the-wall restaurant in a small shopping mall next to nothing. We originally came to the bakery several years ago - they have really good bread. The desire for the bread led to the desire for their tortas. The desire for their tortas led to the desire for their dinner entrees. The Camarones al Mojo de Alo is shrimps cooked in butter and garlic with the shells still on (more flavor) and served with beans, rice, and salad. The Camarones a la Diabla is also pretty good - nice spice and flavor. At the time of this review, both of these menu items were $10 each, which for this price, the food here is exceptional! Wait staff is nice and friendly. The main thing about El Sazon Oaxqueno is that the food tastes very homemade. The beans still have whole beans in them, which signals to me that they haven't been sitting in a pot for a long time (because then the beans would be more broken down). The rice has a nice glisten of oil on it, just like mom makes. And the salad is typical lettuce, onion, tomato, and avocado with a slice of lime, which I incorporate into the small tacos I make with their tortillas that taste like the kind you get at the store. This is not the best Oaxacan food in the area, but the food here is very good for the price you pay, and it is food that we typically return to over the years. And for these reasons, I give El Sazon Oaxaqueno four stars.

Yelp
Love this place ! My family and I have been coming here for a very long time and the food has always been delicious! Reasonable prices and great customer service !

Zoya T.

Yelp
We asked for a "chicken" quesadilla last Friday and we got one with not chicken instead . We called back to let them know and the lady say we could get our money back next time. We went back today and they wanted to charge me for a regular quesadilla and just put chicken on it. I asked for my money and they just gave me 3 dollars back, when the whole thing was almost 10 bucks!!! This place is cheap and they don't care about their costumers. Never going back.
google avatar

Yelp
What's good here: - Anything with mole! The coloradito was the best - a fantastic blend of spicy and sweet layered over tender chicken falling off the bone. Mole negro also a winner with distinct chocolate flavors and rich velvety texture.

Yelp
A modest place on the corner mini mall once you walk in you can see there is much care in the restaurant physically but when you eat your food you realize this is not a fast food joint highly recommend non-commercial local time

Peter L.

Yelp
Homemade chips. Homemade tortillas. Great breakfast. I had the eggs with cactus. Partner had red chilaquiles. All good.
google avatar

Dale B.

Yelp
I come here all the time for some good Oaxacan food. Their portions are large and prices very reasonable. I like their tlayuda, camarones a la diabla, and the mojarra frita. The chips and salsa that accompany each meal are always fresh, and they have some pretty great juices as well. The atmosphere is casual. Service can be a little slow, but they are generally very friendly and accommodating. I've brought people here for lunch meetings as it's typically quiet enough to have an unimpaired conversation.

Yelp
Great oxacan food, good prices for the flavor ! Small place so expect to wait a little but overall nice local place we go to often.

Yelp
I have been coming here for most of my life and I am now sad to say that the quality of bread has decreased. I don't know if they are unable to keep a consistent baker but the bread's quality can either be delicious or dry. Before they split up the bakery and restaurant the food AND the bread was delicious. I still stop by every few months with the hope that I will be able to get my hands on some authentic Oaxacan bread.
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
If someone who is visiting from out of town wants to experience some extraordinarily good Mexican food, this is where I take them.
google avatar

Cyrus G.

Yelp
Very low prices, but the quality and service is lacking and the food is gooey. Vegetarian options are burritos for $7 (gooey beans, gooey rice and gooey cheese), chile relleno (very simplistic), not even a fajita plate.
