The 18 Best Mexican Restaurants In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"El Xangarrito means "tiny shop"—an appropriate name for a restaurant whose tables are so close to the kitchen that it feels like you should bring your chef's knives and start cooking, too. But this BYOB spot makes up for its tinyness with a menu full of great Mexican dishes. Like their savory al pastor tacos or the shrimp ceviche with just the ideal amount of citrus and sweetness from mango. The steak enchiladas are also delicious, and come with a rich smoky mole. The inside is so small it's best for solo diners and couples, but a sidewalk patio provides some additional seating." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru

The food was delicious! The chicken enchiladas were stuffed with large chunks of chicken. They were a bit pricier than most Mexican restaurants, but you get your money's worth. I was blown away by the salad, as I don't normally eat salads, but the combination of greens with what seemed to be a vinaigrette dressing really made it very enjoyable. The atmosphere is great, and our server was very attentive.

Was craving enchiladas last night and El Xangarrito Mex Restaurant did not disappoint! We started with the esquite, which was light, fresh, and a perfect opener. We also ordered the plátanos en mole. The mole was rich and earthy, balanced by the sweetness of the plantains. The real reason we came though? The enchiladas de poblano. The sauce was perfect—flavorful without being too spicy. They came with cubed chicken, a generous amount of sauce, and just the right toppings. Looking forward to coming back!

Went out of my way to try this place while in Chicago for work. The complimentary chips and dip were good. The chips themselves were great. The dip was good but spicy. Would love to see their take on a salsa. For my dinner I had shrimp in a garlic sauce. It was outstanding. The sauce was so good. Good enough to lick the plate (I used the spoon instead). The shrimp was cooked perfectly. The rice was excellent. The salad was even great. Highly recommend this place. Will come back next time I'm in Chicago.

This is truly a hidden gem. Tucked into a tiny little space on Rockwell Street, you’d miss this place if you didn’t look for it. My favorite items are the ceviche, ribs, and enchiladas. They have two different kinds of moles and will let you sample both. It’s BYOB, so bring some drinks! Parking is easy!

We madeLast minute reservations( GREAT) ( walk ins are welcome but reservations highly recommended) its a small place so it can get & is tight seating). BUT , food, service and Vibes are excellent! Would recommend and definately coming back! We ordered 3 appetizers($$) and 3 different main course meals($$$) , you can tell this isn't just an ordinary cook, it's a chef( look at the delightful display of plates before we indulged in this Culinary experience. It was all really really good, and fulfilling.

We will do the hour long commute just to come to this place. The food is so exquisite and the presentation is amazing. Highly recommend getting the Enchiladas Morita!! Best enchiladas we’ve ever had

Last night, I visited a hidden gem near Ravenswood/Albany Park and was delighted by the authentic Mexican cuisine. As someone who grew up in Mexico for 10 years and is of Mexican descent, I am quite particular about my Mexican food. The Tampiqueña cut was exceptional, featuring nicely seasoned meat cooked to perfection and accompanied by two enchiladas - the chicken option is superior to cheese. The platter also includes jicama salad and maduros/plantains. The restaurant's BYOB policy is a significant advantage. My only recommendation would be to provide beans and rice as an alternative to maduros, which can be requested.

We came to El Xangarrito to celebrate Mother’s Day and my mother-in-law’s birthday, and the experience was absolutely top-notch. From the moment we walked in, the service and hospitality were outstanding. Hector took great care of us—super friendly and attentive. The owner even came by to introduce himself and check on our table, which really made the experience feel personal and welcoming. Now, let’s talk about the food—just incredible. The appetizers were full of flavor, and every dish we ordered was packed with bold, authentic taste. You’d never guess such a small, intimate spot could serve up meals that feel five-star, but El Xangarrito delivers on every level. I’m even considering having them cater my next event—it was that good. Highly recommend. We’ll definitely be back!
