Ella Funt - Review - East Village - New York - The Infatuation

"Half the city’s restaurants are currently in an arms race to see who can have the plainest white walls, but not Ella Funt. This East Village spot has a neon-lit kitchen, a gallery-worthy art collection, and a gilded bathroom that’ll make you feel immeasurably wealthy for two to three minutes, depending on how hydrated you are. Named for a drag artist who performed at the club that once occupied the basement (which the owners plan to revive), the place feels slick and offbeat in a way that fits the neighborhood. But, cool as it is, we wouldn’t recommend a full dinner here. If you want to check out this restaurant equivalent of Prada shades paired with Dr. Martens, sit at the bar, drink a glass of skin contact wine, and stick to just one or two French and Asian-inspired small plates. photo credit: Seth Caplan Ella Funt’s neobistro menu starts out strong, and fizzles toward the end. The crunchy little pork croquettes with comte are fantastic, and the tartine with uni and burrata is a certified cheat code. But it’s hard to get amped about a pricey strip steak drowning in a heavy tarragon sauce, or a single ricotta raviolo that tastes like a brief, unsatisfying recap of a story you’ve heard a few times before. photo credit: Seth Caplan To make the most of this place, treat it like a buzzy wine bar or gallery opening, and bring someone who has a rough idea of what they’d wear to the next Raf Simons show. The two of you can explore the natural wine list while you take in the ambiance, which is ultimately more compelling than the food. Food Rundown Croquettes de Cochon Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, these bite-sized croquettes contain a rich mixture of pork and comté that pairs perfectly with the mustard sauce on the side. Every evening at Ella Funt should involve at least one order. Toast d’Oursins Given our city’s obsession with uni and burrata, you’d think every downtown restaurant would be serving some version of this tartine. It’s a winning formula, and the mala oil is a very nice touch. Tartare de Boeuf Unlike your typical steak tartare, this version—which comes with lettuce cups on the side—tastes light and citrusy. It’s a good dish, but not an essential order. Poulet Roti We aren’t huge fans of the larger plates at Ella Funt, but if you have to choose one, go for the chicken. Surprisingly, the best part of the dish is the charred lettuce stuffed with dill, tarragon, and asparagus. Dry Aged Strip Loin A good steak, without a doubt. But a good steak isn’t hard to find in this city, and this $65 one comes hidden under a blanket of thick, overpowering sauce. If you do go this route, ask for the sauce on the side." - Bryan Kim

Burrata Is So Boring

"A new East Village wine bar whose menu listed a “toast d’oursins” promising uni and mala oil but served a $28 starter that was effectively a burrata dish; a thick, cold layer of cheese dominated every bite, leaving diners feeling misled because the burrata overwhelmed the uni and made the course taste plain rather than the uni-forward appetizer advertised." - Tammie Teclemariam

Super cute French spot in east village. The gem salad was great (vinaigrette dressing was very flavorful). The steak au poivre portion was tiny but it was tasty; side of frites were average, nothing extraordinary. Staff was very kind and hospitable; excellent music; we didn’t try any of the drinks but next time I guess. Very sceney and artsy place — I loved it !!

Google
Not a great experience. Ella Funt has a great atmosphere but not much more than that. We had a reservation for two and tried the place for the first time. Some reviews said that the cocktails are great and the food isn’t but we still wanted to try it ourselves. First, we asked about the martini flights option and realized these are all pre mixed cocktails. For a place considered a cocktail bar, it shouldn’t serve premixed drinks and definitely not martinis, which are overall a fundamental cocktail that every bartender should know how to make well from scratch. Second, we asked for a basic dirty gin martini instead. We got a martini that tasted like quarter gin, 3 quarters vermouth, super dry, not even a hint of olive brine. It was just unprofessional for a place that aims to serve cocktails in NYC. Third, the food was actually the better part of our experience. The burger was definitely the best part, overpriced but great overall. The steak was also good just very small. Should have expected it though because the steak price is actually cheap. Overall, if you’re looking for good music and vibe go here. If you’re looking for a good NYC cocktail experience stay away.

Google
The food here was top notch—I'm still thinking about the tartare and the ribs. Our server and hostess were both lovely, making the experience even better. Plus, the interior design is absolutely beautiful and stylish. A perfect spot for a memorable night out.

Google
We randomly found out about the restaurant while browsing places close to the New York Comedy Club. We were surprised, impressed, delighted . The burger is amazing, too 5 burgers ever. The drink delicious. Our waiter Luis was amazing. He was attentive, didn’t mind my silly questions. The vibes are immaculate. Decor and food to die for and ask for Luis and tip him well, he’s the best

Google
I had a second visit to Ella Funt after a years, and the experience was incredible. The food is now more comforting without losing its chic touch. The steak and the burger were some of the best I’ve had in New York, with amazing flavors and impeccable presentation. We decided to have the Irish Sour as a dessert, and it was incredible, delicious, and super cute. The cocktails, including the carrot negroni, maintained that unique sophistication. Plus, the atmosphere remains chic, and Juan, the bartender, is charming, fun, and creates a fantastic vibe. The only note would be that the sound system sometimes varies too much in volume, making conversation difficult. Overall, everything was 10/10. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
I don’t usually write reviews but I had such a great experience at this bar last night. Juan, my waiter, who told my friends and I he is the bartender, the drinks and food he gave us was so great. The portions were a good fit for our party of 4. The steak and hamburger, cauliflower was sooo good and well seasoned. We had the white Negroni carrot-have to come back for it! 😍😍 it was amazing.

Google
The new menu and food are impeccable. By far the best burger in New York. High quality meat, perfect brioche, with a habanero remoulade. Other favorites are the ceviche and watermelon salad. And the chocolate mousse!

Yelp
Absolutely loved our visit to this spot in New York! Elle funt has amazing eccentric vibes with live music on some days. The cocktails are exceptional! The chef came and personally greeted us and asked us for feedback. They have a seasonally changing menu! We loved their appetizers and their unique take and presentation! The cod was delicious! Ended the night with an abstract take on a chocolate mouse with sea salt and olive oil

Yelp
Very pleasant service, and the drinks are strong- but not particularly tasty. We enjoyed the ambience.

Yelp
Service was good and the decor was dark/upscale/trendy. We ordered the gem salad, fluke ceviche, shishito peppers to start and split a burger. I enjoyed all the apps, but surprisingly, the burger stood out. Not the fries, just the burger. Good burger/ bun ratio, had a kick & something extra. Yum. I had a glass of wine and a cocktail (NY Noir), both of which were good. I think the martini flight could've been better presented. It was awkwardly placed on a small plate and one of them look like it had spilled. Overall though, would return if in the area.

Yelp
Came here for a birthday and really enjoyed myself! It seems like the menu changes, seasonally, so be on the lookout for new additions. When I was there, we enjoyed shared plates like the oysters, which came pre-dressed, and branzino. I wasn't drinking much that evening but tried sips from a few cocktails and they were delicious. The inside is really cute, definitely adding to the neo-French aesthetic. Servers were helpful and courteous. I would go back for sure! Great takes on classic French dishes.

Yelp
Interior was beautiful as it also was for the presentation. However, everything was priced incredibly high and I left still quite hungry. Portions were very small and I couldn't justify the price for it

Yelp
I'm unsure how this restaurant is receiving decent reviews? The vibe is good but the food is not edible. Sardines were served out of a can I could've bought at Wegmens. Then uncooked trout as a dish could make someone sick. Then the server let us know the steak we ordered that tasted terrible was aged past its due date. I've never left a bad review but it boggles my mind that they receive good reviews.

Yelp
Oui oui y'all. Went in with a large group. Made reservations via email, the happily folks accommodated my last minute changes. The food was excellent and we shared everything. Cocktails wines selection and recommendations vibe inside very festive and fun. A must

Yelp
One of those reviews that I shouldn't write..... So far it seems that it is not completely hyped and I wish it will stay that way though I cheer for the owners . Excellent all around ! The food is exquisite !!! The dorade with that fantastic light flavorable sauce is a perfection . The raviolo is so good that you want to order at least two . And that chocolate mousse ..... decadence . Very shareable so order up . They change the menu frequently but expect nothing less than fabulous food . Great service and they have outside (walk on) very underrated sits so it doesn't have to be inside (which it is beautiful due to the history vibe) Highly recommended!!! Definitely A Destination!!!!

Yelp
I surprised my girlfriend today flying up from CHS to NYC. We had a 6:00 reservation at Ella Funt before the Maggie Rogers concert at Forest Hills (LFG). The service was lovely. I made a joke to the hostess and she laughed (which is really all you need to get 5 star service from me). She was French and joked back with us. Our server had some super great recs which we followed. She said "my pleasure" one time. I like that. My girlfriend got the Aloe Vera Margarita and I ordered the Banana Manhattan. They were out of some ingredient of the banana situation but offered a standard Manhattan. I flexed to an EDVM (extra dirty vodka martini). Oh yeah, the recs. She told us the bruschetta was good. Talk dirty to me. They were hitters. Then we got the ravioli which we were warned was one single massive ravioli noodle. It was dank. If we had more time before the concert we would have kept trying out stuff on the menu. We both loved it. My girlfriend described the vibe (with a smile) as "funky". Good food, funky vibes and were treated well. 5 stars.

Yelp
I couldn't quite figure out the vibe they are going for. The staff were a bit too cool for school but that wasn't the vibe for the place. The cocktails and the food were very tasty. However, the prices were high and the portions not so big. My husband after appetizer, main and half of a dessert, I was still hungry and I am not necessarily a huge eater. I think instead of charging 10$ for bread they should provide it for free and then people won't be hungry. Also the menu changes so the items that caught my eye in a review were not actually on the menu.

Yelp
My partner and I wanted to try this new restaurant for our anniversary - pretty disappointing experience overall. First off, the place was pretty empty for 7pm on a Friday night (not a great sign) the cocktails were okay and $20. We got the scallops, do not recommend. Only highlights were the bread and butter because they were served with anchovies and the pork collar. Unfortunately left hungry with a $150 bill.

Yelp
A fine establishment. Beautifully decorated, top notch service, excellent food. I highly recommend the uni burrata. Fantastic wine program as well, led by one of the more knowledgeable sommeliers that I've met. I came in with a party of four and we all left full and happy. Will be back.

Yelp
Absolute best grilled fish in NYC!! Grilled to perfection, juicy with crispy skin, and completely de-boned!! The sauce of the ris de veau is out of this world. And the meringue that comes with the lemon tart is exceptional. I loved the wines they recommended and the cocktails are great too. Worth coming here for dinner or drinks. Beautiful restaurant, solid service, and maybe the most fun dining experience in the city.

Yelp
Second time going to Ella Funt and boy they did not disappoint. Excellent service from the start. Our waitress Jordan was phenomenal, great personality and a wealth of knowledge. She told us to pair the rose with the oyster and man she was spot on. The oysters, croquettes, and tartar were the apps we chose, and they were beautifully plated with explosive taste. The main courses were all phenomenal as well. We got three desserts at the end, all of them very good but the chocolate moose was out of this world. The first two trips to Ella funt were 10/10, they say 3rd times a charm so I'm excited to see what the 3rd time brings! Great job Ella Funt and Chef Nick!

Casey J.

Yelp
The food was pretty good however the portions are VERY small especially for the price. The chicken was one thigh barely enough for one person, the uni toast was about the size of my palm and toast wasn't crisp, the agnolotti was delicious but unfortunately cold. We also had the cabbage which was good but, again, very small, about a quarter a cabbage. Very expensive to leave so hungry.

Yelp
Had a few drinks here with friends it was so cute. Loved the mural in the second room and the bathrooms were a fun design. Natural wine was delish

Yelp
This place is the hottest spot in NYC right now. We had a party of 12 and they accommodated us like we were family. The attention to detail, the food, and the vibe was awesome. Loved the design of it. Going to come back and make it a regular thing.

Aris K.

Yelp
Fantastic: food, vibe, drinks. Genuinely an amazing experience! I could not recommend this place more. We went for a large friend gathering of 12 people. The staff was friendly accommodating and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. I'll be going back for date night.

Yelp
This business has no idea what it's doing. Just shut it down. The owner (or at least one of them) is totally on drugs. He paces the floor of the restaurant sweating over guests food and has putrid body odor. I experienced this after complaining to him about my fish being too salty and the chicken being undercooked. After failing both times to get me the properly cooked food, he yelled at us and told us to get out if we don't like it. I believe he's French and didn't get a name for him. Not to mention, I saw TWO monstrous cockroaches. One by the entrance and one by the bar area. The sanitation here is lacking -- crumbs on the seat cushion, fingerprint smudges on my silverware and wine glasses. Please save yourself from going here if you want to enjoy a nice meal comfortably. It's way too overpriced, lacks professional management, dirty and disgusting and the music was way too loud. I couldn't even hear my own thoughts. DO NOT GO HERE.

Simran G.

Yelp
This may have been the oddest and most frustrating dining experiences of my life. Extremely poorly run under a manager who doesn't know how to delegate but also isn't helpful. We ordered drinks, crudités, and the fish -- after waiting for 30 minutes for drinks and asked a manager who explained with a very rehearsed response. The crudités were fine but the fish was inedible because of an odd, sour marinade. The worst part of the experience was the disregard for my allergies and when I asked the waiter to double check that I could eat the food, they acted like it was the biggest inconvenience. Additionally, the waitress commented on me and my friends ethnicities, took the drinks away before we were done drinking, and would sporadically hover over the table and start whispering to us. Another waitress' friends stopped by and they made fun of the restaurant. The experience was so strange and it was painful to pay for extremely overpriced, gross food and weird treatment.
