Vegan Restaurants Evolution Fast Food and Donna Jean in San Diego to Open in Shared San Diego Space | Eater San Diego
"After 15 years of serving its famed veggie burgers and loaded fries, the shop received an eviction notice earlier this year, giving its ownership group, driven by Mitch Wallis, a tight timeline to find a new home before January’s deadline. The search led to the soon-to-be-vacated space currently occupied by the Village (which is relocating to Long Beach); the two businesses will take over the Village’s lease and transform the 4,000-square-foot venue into a vegan dining hub. The original location will be torn down and replaced by a condominium development, marking the end of an era for the iconic drive-thru spot. Reopened on Thursday, December 4 with several operational updates: some menu items, like the jumbo veggie wrap and falafel, are being retired, while a juice bar and beer taps are being added; longtime favorites including the BLT with soy-free tempeh bacon, the carob date shake, and churro cheesecake remain. The updated space includes an outdoor dining patio located in the parking lot, dedicated curbside pickup spots, and QR code ordering for convenience; although the drive-thru is no longer part of the setup, these changes are designed to enhance the casual counter-service experience the operation is known for. It will maintain its own entrance, staff, and kitchen while sharing the benefits of a modernized, oversized kitchen and communal atmosphere with a neighboring restaurant; both plan to align hours and may expand to seven days a week. The new location also offers a large parking lot and is situated on bus- and soon-to-be-bike-friendly El Cajon Boulevard, improving accessibility for customers." - Kelly Bone
