Expat Review - West Loop - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Ever wanted to open up your own restaurant? Good news, we know how you can do it on the cheap. If Expat can throw a few tables and chairs on the sidewalk and call it a restaurant, then so can you. Add some flags hanging overheard and voila! Decoration. In reality, Expat is kind of a genius move by the Element Collective group, the people who own the place. They own Nellcôte and RM Champagne, which are side by side and share the sidewalk on the southwest corner of Randolph and Green. So they decided to put some new yellow tables out front on the Green St. sidewalk, create a small menu, and call it an entirely new restaurant - Expat. Kudos to them. That means Expat is literally a small patio. There's no inside. Yes, it's below freezing here much of the year, but there's still a stretch in Chicago when you want to eat outside all the time, and Expat can be the cute little spot in the West Loop that fills the need. Just don’t refer to this period as #SummerTimeChi - we probably can’t be friends if you do. The menu is built around small plates and dishes that are ideal for the warmer months, which makes sense if you’ve paid attention to anything we just said. Come to Expat to sit outside and eat oysters, raw crudo, salad, and a few other light plates. People watching in front of Soho House is also excellent, and that alone can make for a fascinating meal. Boozy snow cones are also a great idea, and since it'll be a nice day 100% of the time you sit at Expat, we suggest you cap things off with an alcohol-infused ice. Food Rundown Oysters Start with a few. Ahi Tuna Chopped up ahi tuna with watermelon, avocado, and hearts of palm. The avocado and hearts of palm aren’t that noticeable, but the tuna and watermelon are. Solid crudo. Little Gem Salad Little gem, croutons, red wine vinaigrette. Basic and small, but not bad if you want some greens. Soppressata Sandwich A simple soppressata sandwich that has some house butter on it and comes with a bag of UTZ crab chips. It’s a small sandwich, which is fine in this instance, but we’d prefer a little lighter on the butter. Chicago Burrata The burrata isn’t anything special, but the trout roe that comes on it is smoky and fantastic and makes this dish a must order for us. Raw Vegetables Pick a type of raw vegetable and it literally comes raw shoved in a giant square bowl of ice with spicy ranch and pesto cream sauce. You could order your choice of raw cucumbers, radishes, purple cauliflower, little gem lettuce, or turnips. Or you can say fck that because who wants to pay for raw vegetables at a restaurant. Rosé Snow Cone You know you want it. Limoncello and Henny Sidecar versions are available too. A worthy order since you know it'll be nice out if you're sitting here." - Sam Faye

Fresh, fun, and fabulous! This restaurant was listed as one of the best brunches in the West Loop, so we thought we'd give it a try, and we were not disappointed. I had the BLT which was served on a pizza crust with delicious candied bacon mayonnaise tomato onion and lettuce. My son and his girlfriend had Cobb salad French toast and breakfast sandwich. For drinks we had a bloody mary which didn't look so fancy but was delicious and flavor, a cappuccino and because they were out of fruit for the Smoothie just water. Everything was spectacular and the decor and atmosphere was very appealing. The service was spectacular. I highly recommend and would definitely return.

We started with the daily smoothie and the base was mixed berries. I love smoothies but don’t get them often because places just don’t do it right, but I was impressed with this one. The iced vanilla latte also hit the spot to the point where we actually got one to go. For food we split the smashed avocado toast with the addition of smoked salmon on top. I really liked this, and it was actually my favorite item we ordered, loved the chili crisps and everything bagel seasoning. My friend Alec got the Chicken Caesar Wrap which was good, but it could’ve used a little more chicken. The west coast breakfast burrito I liked more, but it was kinda on the salty side from the hash brown which was the only down side, but this thing is freaking huge and if I were to come back, I would get the smashed toast and those drinks.

Google
Great service and ham and cheese croissant and avocado toast is amazing. Smoothie is not great and wouldn’t recommend. It’s really just a few berries with cashew butter. Only cons is the music is a little too loud and also barstools at the bar top seating are not the right height , too short.

Google
Great cafe/bar to get some work done, decent food menu and lots of cocktails to choose from. Service was friendly and relaxed. Free WiFi and solid playlist. Bohemian loft/lounge vibe with lots of comfy seating and an outdoor patio.

Stopped at Expat after seeing them on WGN. Ordered the turkey club and Ceasar wrap both were delicious. Service and vibe was great. Met executive chef Shannon great person. We'll definitely come back.

Google
Great new spot, fantastic service and vibe. We had the BLT and turkey club and split a side of fries, all was very good.

Google
Great ambience! I went there to get some work done but I started to have fomo when the most incredible DJ was playing for a day party there! Must visit to meet some cool people. It seemed like a bunch of digital nomads enjoying the vibe. Definitely going there and drinking the next time

Google
One of my favorite places in the city. The menu is literally a work of art, and the decor reminds me of cafes I’ve been in SE Asia. Cocktails are fantastic and creative, and the bartenders I’ve had thus far are incredibly attentive. Great live music often as well. Totally recommend.

Yelp
Very nice interior. We came for breakfast, the food was super tasty. Granola, pancakes, avocado toast. Everything was delicious. Very polite staff. We were satisfied.

Yelp
I had a so-so experience to be honest, BUT I'm very willing to give them another shot. They had an event happening with a liquor brand when we visited, so they could only serve an altered cocktail menu. That being said - - It's tucked away at the end of Randolph Street and around the corner. So many interesting spots in the vicinity! - The space is really nice. Well decorated. Variety of tables, lounge areas, and a generous patio! - It's not obvious when you first arrive if its seat yourself, table service, or bar service. We initially felt awkward, but my kind bartender eventually came over to tell us it was bar-service only. - My cocktail was meh, but I wish I could have tried their not my Al cocktail menu instead of the partnership drinks. - The food was fine, and I would order something else next time.

Yelp
- The design and interior inside is a "delight" - The service staff is very caring and friendly -I got the bawl granola and latte - the latte is a little bitter for me personally. But the granola with berries and yuurt is 10 out of 10, very tasty. - I am extremely satisfied and would like to come back for more

Yelp
Visited on a Thursday around 1pm, cafe had several other guest but plenty of open space. You seat yourself and servers come by with a menu and water. Drink: Drip Coffee - solid dark roast Food: House Salad - simple but good, mixed greens with cherry tomatoes, cucumber and onion, in a light citrus dressing, good portion size, wasn't overly dressed balanced flavors Service was good, friendly and relaxed, food and drink arrived pretty quick, sever checked in occasionally. Great cafe/bar to get work done, feels like a bohemian loft with lots of comfy seating that's well spaced out and a nice playlist. Free WiFi was great, lots of others were using the space to work as well. Would love to come back to try more of the food menu which looked great!

Yelp
Had dinner with a girlfriend last night and I have to say this place is quite unique all day and night coffee bar. The theme of the decor and book menu centered around expat / travels marry well together. We ordered the frozen porn star martini and an espresso martini for drinks. Both were excellent choices and I loved our fresh my frozen drink was on this hot day. For our entrees we had the cheeseburger and Pasta Al Simone. Once both dishes were served - our food was fresh and tasty. The burger meat was rich and the secret sauce brought all the flavors together. Upon our server suggestion, we also had the espresso creme brûlée - oh my! If you have a sweet tooth you cannot leave without trying it. We really enjoyed our time there. Looking forward to visiting over the weekend when Djs are playing on the patio or having dinner at the two other connected restaurants - Coquette and Bambola. Thanks to our bartender Daniel for taking care of us.

Yelp
I had brunch at Expat and was thoroughly impressed. The atmosphere combines exotic and bohemian elements beautifully. With both indoor and outdoor seating, I opted to enjoy the sunny outdoor space. The food was amazing and very reasonably priced. I tried the BLT, which is served on a pizza crust and includes bacon, lettuce, tomato, ricotta mayo, and sundried tomato pesto. I also indulged in a xuxo chocolate and sea salt caramel mini croissant, which was both adorable and delicious. My friends ordered the West Coast burrito and the egg sandwich, both of which were generously portioned and reportedly delicious. The service was friendly and provided excellent recommendations. I will definitely be returning and will have to try the late night feel the next time!

Yelp
This place is slightly hidden but what a find! Great food, this was recommended by the server and we're glad we tried it. My gimlet had a great presentation and great flavor. Decor is super cute and welcoming. My only criticism - the staff seem like they're more interested in socializing than waiting in customers. This was likely due to an almost empty restaurant but we had to ask to be waited on. Other than that, great experience.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS BAR. Recently opened off to the side in the Coquette space - almost a secret little entrance to a hideaway, IYKYK. "Cafe by Day, Bar by Night" PERFECT. So European. Cocktail menu: famous drinks from famous bars, imagined right here in Chicago! I had a Porn Star Martini, made famous by the LAB bar in London. A delicious concoction (it tasted spicy, mellow, umami delicious) that comes with a little sidecar of champagne. PERFECT. I also sampled the Singapore Sling, and that was also really tasty. Food. We two got the fish tacos and the pastrami sandwich to share - was a perfect amount of food for a light dinner, and the taste was just incredible. Craveworthy. The fish tacos were plump, with a light, crunchy breading. The Pastrami - really a Reuben sandwich - my favorite was all delicious. I'll be back here again and again. Gotta try that Wisconsin Old Fashioned, since I am a Wisconsin expatriat! Bartenders were good looking, friendly and charming. I love this place!!

Yelp
Good food and an interactive place. Nice casual ambiance. Service was a bit distracted and slow.

Yelp
Cute bar off Ogden in West Loop. Really large cocktail list and cool to see all the inspirations from around the world. Yummy little bites available if you're hungry. I think I had the bird of paradise cocktail which was a pretty drink. Staff was super cool.

Yelp
I LOVE this place!!! Tucked away in an unassuming spot, around the corner from Randolf Street Restaurant Row and the Fulton Market District. It is a true hidden gem. Expect offers so much. Coffee Shop, Study Spot, Friends Lunch and even dinner & cocktails. The American cuisine is fantastic. We had a burger, salad and french toast. Everything was perfect. The decor is incredible - airy and charming with a twist. Travel vibes, furry pillows, colorful tile and various seating options. Service matched all the other great elements. The positivity was in full force. Attentive and friendly service made our experience better. I can't wait to return at night for cocktails.

Yelp
Beware if you're gluten free! I'm GF by choice not celiac (luckily). I wanted to love this restaurant and go weekly since it's right by my gym. First they have almost nothing for a gluten free eater. No GF bread. I ordered the Cobb salad after reviewing the ingreds with dressing on side. I got home and it had cucumbers (which I hate) and CROUTONS neither of which are listed on menu. If I'd had celiac,I'd have had to throw away the whole dish but instead I picked out all croutons and cucumbers. My husband and friend did think their food was good to be fair. Wanted to do online order the following week but on their Toast acct, no way to make any modifications and they never answer their phone listed on the website. So had to go in and place order. Said no cucs or croutons and asked if he could have mgr come talk to me about updating Toast to add comments. While waiting the mgr was sitting at the bar but didn't come by. Asked bartender if mgr was coming by and he said he'd checked with mgr and Toast is a 3rd party vendor they have no control over (not true as I order from other places who use Toast and have space for mods; all a restaurant needs to do is work with Toast to do this). Told him but mgr never came over. Also I said tried to place my order via phone so I wouldn't have to wait and he said the restaurant doesn't really have a phone (huh? What is the phone # on their site for?). Tried to contact mgmt via email but only thing listed is IG. Looked up parent company and emailed them to explain all of the above and never heard back. So I've got to think it's a top down mgmt issue that decides customer isn't important (couldn't even walk over to talk to me when sitting a few feet away). I would've for sure picked up at least once a week but I'm out due to lack of caring on part of employees. I've never seen more than 3 customers in there at noon when I went so maybe others have decided the same?

Yelp
Amazing' like this place! Good atmosphere and very tasty food! Service it's interesting too. Guys have a lot of places

Yelp
My favorite new brunch spot. Amazing menu. We had a few things to share. Salmon avocado toast was so good. They have a pastrami sandwich that is killer. French toast was shared and oh man was it amazing. We also had a breakfast sandwich. Will definitely be back to try more. Great vibes and service. Nicest room in the area to grab brunch or lunch.

Yelp
have only been in the morning and afternoon but expat is a fantastic brunch spot and / or place to bring a laptop. the drinks are all spot on examples of cocktails from expat bars around the world!
