The Best Cider in Philly | Eater Philly

"If you’re in the mood for fresh apple cider made in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas, one of the best places to start is at one of the city’s many farmers’ markets. Some of the most popular include Headhouse Square, Clark Park, and Northern Liberties, which bring together dozens of local farmers and makers to sell top-quality produce and their byproducts. Just visit the Food Trust website to get a listing of the locations." - George Banks-Weston

Some of my favorites here are Ursa Bakery, Mycopolitan mushrooms, Jezabel’s empanadas and the produce vendors!

Fairmont Farmers market is getting better and better! Now we have an abundance of seasonal produce, seasonal fruit (only apples right now ), organic chicken and eggs, Ursa's fantastic bread, beer, and babka and mushrooms twice a month. Asparagus and rhubarb made their appearance last week for the first time this year.

Yelp
A lovely neighborhood farmers market! Great bread, produce & fun treats. There is usually a juice vendor, beer vendor, cheese vendor, and that really good tomato jam. Definitely not as big as Rittenhouse farmers market but honestly so much less crowded so kinda slays. Perfect for late-week needs if you don't want to haul all the way to Trader Joes. Lowkey kinda shook at the 2/3 star reviews :/

Yelp
First of all - the rhubarb jam from the amish market is my crack. I think I bought 6 containers of it this summer. On 6 dif Thursdays. It is soooo good. It's pretty expensive and I eat it fast - but I keep coming back and keep buying more. You can buy rhubarb jam cheaper elsewhere - but theirs is just sooo good. The market overall is small and pricey. But it is just really convenient to where I live. I have gotten the best strawberries of my life here - and whatever I pay is worth it. I generally don't buy their veggies bc, again, too expensive. I stop in most Thursdays here due to the convenience and never leave empty handed. Important side note: they even stay open in the pouring rain as they all have tents.

Yelp
Very small farmer's market on literally one corner of a block: fruit, veg, Amish produce and baked goods, and a stand from Ursa Bakery (recently named one of the best things to eat in Philly by Philadelphia Magazine! - try the olive fougasse for intense flavor). There is also a stand from the Vetri foundation that does cooking demonstrations but does not appear to give out food bucks like the cooking demonstrations at Clark Park. Kinda disappointing. Functional for when you're in the Fairmount area, really need local produce, and are willing to pay above-supermarket prices for it.

Yelp
It's small and utilitarian, so this is not going to provide entertainment or a place to bring your friends from out of town. Go to Reading Terminal for that. If you live in the Fairmount/Spring Garden area it's a wonderful resource for fresh veggies and fruit. The fruit guy has a great variety of apples and they are better than any you get in a grocery store. The Amish veggie stand is nice but a little pricey and I find their baked goods only so-so. The vendor that keeps me coming back is Ursa Bakery, which has the best bread in the city. Until Ursa moved in, some weeks I would forget to go to this market. Not anymore. Metropolitan Bakery is darn good but honestly, Ursa outshines it. It's pricey but worth every penny. Instead of $8 for a chicken, get the bread and have soup or a salad with it. This bread is the star of the meal. The market is now open all year, which is a plus.

Yelp
The Fairmount Farmers' Market is a member of the large family of Food Trust Philadelphia markets. There are usually 5-6 stands: a small organic farm with lots of brilliantly-colored gorgeous veggies - my favorites are the lovely assortment of baby squash, from baby zucchini and the tiniest pattypans to bright gold summer squash (perfect for raw mac and cheeze). They also have great-tasting lettuces, which are usually the only thing left at the end of the day - so get there early. There is an amish farm stand which also sells an array of good-looking and great-tasting veggies. Their mushrooms are to die for, they're so fresh. And their cherry tomatoes were out-of this world! They sell eggs, sweet baked goodies and jams as well. There is another farm stand that showed up last week - the best prices ever on gigantic heads of lovely fresh cauliflower and they even sell burpless cucumbers, great for vegetarian sushi. They also have a great array of huge green and yellow summer squash - and they will advise you to pick the best ones. There is a plant/herb stand and also a meat stand and bread on the corner. The bread comes in two sizes, large and small, and some large loaves are sliced. They have lovely large fresh fragrant baguettes and also slices of sweet and dense banana and other yummy nut and fruit breads. Thursday is the day to come. Don't forget to bring lots of small bills (I save them through the week and look forward to spending them on thursdays!). Also, if you can, remember to bring your own bags - although they have plenty if you need them. The hours are 3-7 pm.

Yelp
Know what to expect before you go: Six vendors that sell out early. You've got a fruit guy (non-organic), an organic veggie guy who is pricey but a nice older farmer, an Amish tent with great baked goods and veggies many of which are "chemical free" though I sometimes doubt the veracity of that statement, fantastic popsicles, over priced but damn good bread, and usually someone selling jams or flavored oil. This is not a place to browse. But it is a reliable place for me to drop a load of cash on some pretty fresh produce.

Yelp
I really, really want to love this market, but it is hard for me. Where I am from there aren't so many markets in the city but instead one big one with all vendors on weekends. I definitely prefer that style, especially as a 9-5 worker. My main complaint with this marker is that is so small. There are not a lot of variety in veggies or fruits from the different stands because there are not specialties besides a nice bread and meat vendors. Also the hours aren't great for working people as usually sold out of most stuff by time I can get there (6:15ish). I am glad that it exists and fully support the work of the Food Trust bringing fresh local food to the city but still do most my shopping at other farmers markets in the city on weekends.

Yelp
This is such a treat. So lucky to have this in the neighborhood, since our market/fresh produce options are limited, although there is always Whole F$$ds. Nothing like buying from the Amish directly. Beautiful fruit & vegetables, & the prices are totally reasonable in comparison to other options in the neighborhood. The baked goods are INCREDIBLE: carrot cake loaf, mini apple & blueberry pies.

Yelp
I'm a gal who loves to eat but hates to cook. But when the spirit moves, at least on Thursdays, I make a beeline straight for the Amish stand at the farmers' market. They have a great selection of fresh veggies all through the season and they're priced to move so you won't spend your "whole paycheck" at once. As you can see by my profile picture, I love tomatoes, but I give their cauliflower, onions, arugula, spring mix, and potatoes an A+, too. The best part is that I can counter all those healthy vitamins with one of their delicious, homemade shoo fly pies, which they sell in two convenient sizes: single serving and single serving every day for a week!

Yelp
I find the baked goods from Countryside Bakery to be completely bland. The peach pie's crust was undercooked and had no sweetness to it at all. Almost like the sugar was left out of the recipe. The banana nut bread was overcooked almost to the burnt point and neither tasted like banana and without nuts. Again no sweetness whatsover to it. I was looking forward to buying some bread but the bread guy was late and I could not wait.
