Fat Fish

I came to Fat Fish for dinner and all found it to be just okay. First of all, you order from an iPad and the only service you get is when they call out your name to give you your food. Not necessarily a bad thing, just very minimal customer interaction. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll for $11 and it was comparable to grocery store sushi. Don’t get me wrong; I love a cheap sushi from Safeway, but from a restaurant for more money? I also ordered the Taiyaki Ice Cream which was just vanilla flavored. The treat was pretty average, but I will say that it looks cool. Overall, Fat Fish was worth a shot at trying!

You can order at a kiosk. Sushi was a little on the fishy side. Maybe I’ll try the bowl or fatfish roll next time. I tried the peach sorbet in the taiyaki cone and the sorbet was really good, but I don’t think it paired well with the cone, which was separately good on its own. Cute, casual, quick spot at the Wharf.

We enjoyed Fat Fish, there was a convenient kiosk for ordering so you can take your time with the customization and various menu options, and the vibe is very tropical and peaceful with a nice outdoor dining area as well. The food was pretty good, although the portion sizes for the poke felt a little stingy for the price. Do not recommend the drinks, they were watered down and not very flavorful. The highlight of the meal was the sweet potato nori fries, they were delicious! Overall, a decent stop if you're at the wharf.

We've been meaning to come to this place forever. The sushi was pricey for the portion sizes you get; a 6-piece basic roll was $12, and the sushi burrito was $18. We shared an ice cream, so our total came to nearly $50 with tip. Crazy for a light lunch for two! HOWEVER, the sushi was fresh and delicious and the service was fast and friendly. Both guys working the counter welcomed us when we came in and were smiling/joking around, which makes the atmosphere cheery. They even asked if we wanted to come back for our ice cream after we finished our lunch, which was super nice. The cinnamon ice cream in the fish cone was delicious and we will be back for that, but will probably skip the sushi next time.

After the long walk, we dropped here to take a rest. The cherry blossom season is over but they still had the cherry blossom flavor and we have been curious about the fish shaped Taiyaki cone, so we ordered them. Around the DC area, we have some cherry blossom flavored sweets in spring but normally they are just colored pink, flavor like rose or cherry. On the other hand, in Japan they use salt pickled cherry blossoms. This cherry blossom serve soft is closer to the Japanese flavor although it is milder but still tasted great. It was not too sweet and luckily not salty like the Japanese counterpart. The cone was harder than a waffle cone, but it kept the shape and reminded us Japanese Taiyaki. The tail part which is crispy and one of the best parts!

The restaurant is gorgeous and has a super fun ambiance! I ordered a salmon poke bowl and it was amazing! Plus their soft serve is like nothing I have ever experienced!

Freshest poke bowl I’ve had in a while. You have the option of poke bowls, burrito style rolls, and different sides. They also have an assortment of desserts and soft serve ice cream served in a fish-shaped cone. I chose to make my own bowl and loaded it up with mixed greens, sushi rice, spicy tuna, and spicy salmon. I got (almost) as many toppings as allowed and the bowl was thickkkkk. I added on the spicy salmon. My total was around $25 with the tip included which for a quality poke bowl isn’t too bad. This may become a lunch time staple for me.

Got takeout here. You have to order at the screens. The poke bowl was fresh, delicious, and packed with interesting flavor and ingredients. I see they listened to feedback and increased portion sizes! The food here is very good! 👍

We initially were going to go to the donut place next-door, but it is closed. Cutting our losses, we saw that there was cold treats in the fat fish to try. The island theme and friendly staff were a great respite. We got a set of mango sorbet in the fish cones. Sorbet flavor is on point, and very good in the summer heat. The cones which were freshly made on site also made it a fun experience with my kids. The taste of the cone was crisp and waffly. This was a great location on the waterfront for a nice bite.

Somewhat frustrating experience here. So, you don't speak to any employees here. Any ordering is done via ipad. When I first went in, I went to a counter to see if the worker would address me, but didn't give me eye contact. It was only until I asked another customer how to order did they point out a small ipad in the corner for me to use. I wanted to get food and the ice cream. I didn't see the ice cream on the ipad menu. I wasn't sure if it went by another name (I saw things like cookies). Confused, I then waited in a line of people getting food and then when it was my turn asked the guy how to find the ice cream on the ipad menu. I was told I had to order via ipad. (Weird I was being redirected back to the ipad when I had a direct question that I couldn't find something on the ipad). Anyway, if you're a DC local - maybe this process makes sense. But as I was visiting and given it's location in the wharf (which is very touristy) I think it's silly to not have great signage to understand how to order and have dismissive employees when asked a question. Granted it was busy and the place seems popular, so if there was signage it was small/non existent. Given how busy it was, maybe it was just covered by the many other people in the place - but either way I just left without getting anything because the process was too confusing the the employee was kinda dismissive.

Reprehensible and sneaky 8% fees tacked on to cover "operational costs". People will inevitably take that 8% out of the server's deserved tips. Gross behavior on the part of the owner. Will never eat here again.

Large portions, packed with great Salmon, and other goodies. Basically self-service though the bowls are prepared for you. $55 for 2 people. Pretty usual charge at Poke places we go to.

We were visiting our brother in law in DC over the weekend and our 10 year old niece suggested we have lunch at Fat Fish after our morning at the Spy Museum! Fat fish is within walking distance from the museum and is located at the wharf! It is a small/narrow building, but packs a punch! I don't eat seafood so I had ordered the only vegetable filled item which was a vegetable sushi wrap with peanut sauce. The wrap hit all the flavors: crunchy, sweet, and spicy. The sauce is what makes it spicy and is served on the side. My husband, brother in law and niece all ordered boxes which appear to be bento box style. A mix of salad, potato fries, and a sweet treat with your main entree. We highly recommend taking a visit here for lunch!

I got the peach sorbet taiyaki ice cream and the fish/cone part was harder than what it should be. The peach sorbet was good but there was a fly in my ice cream which may have got in after I got the ice cream. There's also a cinnamon toast flavor which I think may not go well with peach sorbet but I'd like to try separately in the future.

Good quality sushi for a reasonable price - especially for the Wharf! It's also a more casual vibe than some other spots in the area. You order with a touch screen (or your phone) and then pick up your items from the counter. I ordered the bento ($19) which was fantastic - fresh tuna poke, 6 pieces of a sushi roll of your choice, shrimp tempura, ginger salad with edamame, and a mini taiyaki for dessert! I also tried the passion fruit orange guava drink (POG $3) which was just as amazing. Drinks are self serve but I just wish they had ice as well - if it was there I missed it.

The sushi and bowls were great. And they have fun things like sweet potato fries, sushi style (some sauces & toppings). The soft serve was awesome!! Cinnamon cereal and milk flavor. Mmmm. It came with a warm fish cone, that you might think was a waffle cone but actually it was sort of soft and doughy in the middle. Outstanding-but you must get it in a cup or it will melt immediately. The cookies-meh. We tried 3, ube choc chip, choc s'mores, and strawberry shortcake yakult. They looked delicious and the flavors sounded fun. But we're really dry and blah, skip the baked goods, they were too expensive to not be excellent.

A great addition to the wharf! I like the variety of choices provided, especially the soft serve taiyaki which I don't see too many of in the area. Limited seating indoors but a good amount of seating outside the restaurant which makes it a great spot to go to when the weather is nice.

I came here to get some poke and it was pretty good. I got the Fat Fish bowl, which includes three different types of fish, and some veggies and other toppings. Although it was good, it didn't taste as fresh as the stuff that you can get from other places by the sea like Hawaii. I also got a strawberry cheesecake cookie which was also decent.

I was really curious about their "sushi burrito" aka fat fish roll so when I came down to the city to visit, I knew I had to stop by. The fish was soft and very fresh and filled me up so quickly, and the food also came out quickly. For $18 it is a bit pricy but I understand its location does contribute to this pricing. They have ice cream that looked delicious but I was so fully after this roll there was simply no way I could have dessert. I'll be making a return trip back later for the ice cream!

Food was gross. I ordered the fat fish bowl and the rice was stale. The sauce was too sweet. I honestly had trouble choking this down and was glad when it was over. I'm not really holding this one against them but the lemonade was too sweet for my tastes. What I will hold against them is that the drink dispenser was really sticky, the part the cup pushes on probably needs to be cleaned more often. The food came out suspiciously fast, I ordered at the terminal and by the time I was in my seat it seems like the food was ready. I really wonder if this was already made earlier today and they just gave me a bowl that's been sitting out. Even with everything prepped I couldn't imagine assembling this bowl that fast. That would explain why my experience seems to be so out of line with the other reviews here. Also, everything is done through an electronic kiosk and the workers just leave the food out on their counter for customers to pick up. This is fine, but please don't ask for a tip if the workers aren't taking my order or delivering the order to me.

I loved this ice cream! The sakura flavor was fantastic and so cute, it is absolute a picture worthy spot! The people are super friendly and would absolutely go again!

I feel like the Wharf is known for being expensive but like for what.... - the answer is for this!!! - this was quality fish let me say, wow the fat fish poke bowl was fresh, the veggies were flavorful and the fish was buttery and smooth - a decent size but definitely is expensive, not that I can point you towards any cheaper poke bowls - citrus ponzo sauce though just tasted like oil so I'd opt for a different add on

Fresh and delicious food in a modern and contemporary setting. Order in person or online for reasonably priced takeout. There is also indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is friendly and professional. It's a terrific new addition to the neighborhood!

FINALLY, some real poke! After moving to DC, Ive been very hesitant to have poke here (since I was raised on Poke and Poke bowls back in Hawai'i). I'm happy that Fat Fish cuts their poke legit and it tasted good. I just ordered a signature bowl, spicy tuna, I didn't feel like building my own. The rice was cooked and seasoned well. Veggies on it were fresh, but I could do without it as well. We also got poke nachos, which also was good. They were loaded with poke, a variety of different fish, and other toppings. It seemed balanced, we didn't have too many chips and there was a good amount of toppings. Ordering was easy enough, they take orders via kiosks at the front of the restaurant. The workers were working hard--they had quite the queue to fulfill. The space was clean and I appreciated the colorful decor. We also got the taiyaki ice cream. The flavors were vanilla sky and strawberry guava. The taiyaki was ok, it reminded me of a waffle, like it should. The tail isn't hollowed out, so the ice cream doesn't drip through as much. Vanilla was good. The ice cream was smooth and flavorful. Strawberry guava was also good, the slight tartness complimented the sweet vanilla.

Well I've found my new poke spot! I ordered via UberEATS on a whim when I saw they had a few offers. IN DC, especially SW, I expect things to be pricey but I feel like you get good value for your meal here. I did the spicy tuna poke bowl, the spring rolls, and the bento box. The bento box is so cute and I loved fje variety and the flavors of it all. It's a little pricier so it's good if you have a special offer or want more variety. The poke bowl was huge and I was able to split it into two meals. I highly recommend and will be back.

Everything at the Wharf is expensive (a cheaper weekday lunch alternative is the DC Cafe nearby). If Sushi is your thing, Fat Fish is a fine choice. It's a self serve operation with only about a dozen indoor seating area, so it's mostly for takeouts. Folks behind the counter are friendly, and quietly quickly make your food. I ordered a bento box with grilled salmon and tuna with seaweed salad. Taste was on point but portions were small that I felt $25 weren't quite enough for a lunch here.

Greatly enjoyed lunch at this small eatery at the Southwest Waterfront. We ordered at the takeout kiosk, and while the prep time was a bit longer, everything was so fresh and delicious. In an age when portion sizes are huge, the bento box was the perfect size. I left satisfied but not stuffed. The seating area is quite small, but there is ample seating along the waterfront if you're willing and able to walk a very short distance.

Sooooo delicious - best quality food on The Wharf at very, very reasonable prices. Chef Lucas prepares drool-worthy masterpieces with very fresh, delectable ingredients. The Fat Fish roll is amazing... poke nachos are the best treat... you can't miss with anything at this place. Go ahead and grab an extra yum-yum sauce... it's truly YUM! We can't go a week without our Fat Fish.

Cool to try the dessert. It's rather big and enough for 2 people. They didn't have any vegan options for lactose intolerant people, so I had a few tastes and bites and threw 80% away. It was a waste for $10. The cone is rather hard. I thought it would be more like the soft type.

I have to preface this review by saying we did not try any savory food here, but were incredibly pleased with the soft service ice cream in the tatami cones. We got the wild blueberry lavender and honey oat vanilla swirl and it was perfectly sweet and well-complimented with the cone that was soft, but not too soft. I will say the cone did leak a bit so it's good to eat fast. But the flavors of the ice cream were so spot on. You could really taste the lavender, which I find is often too subtle in ice cream and the honey and oat were both present in the vanilla flavor. Would definitely go back, for the ice cream and to try the sushi/poke

Came here for the soft swirl. They change the flavors every two months. The flavor today was chai latte and black sesame. The chai latte had an icy consistency and wasn't sure about the flavor. The black sesame had a much better consistency but the flavor wasn't as strong. Got the soft serve cup $6 with the fish cone on top $4.50 and fruity pebbles topping $0.25 - $.50. the fish was hard and crunchy...wasn't made to order and must of been sitting out over night....how disappointing to pay that much for a cone that wasn't fresh. $11...not sure I would come back.

I was staying in a hotel down on the Wharf and was in need of a quick dinner - knowing everything in the area was going to run about $20, I didn't scoff at the prices at Fat Fish (but they're still kind of high - it was $22 for a create your own bowl w/ tax + tip). I created my own poke bowl and by the time the person was done making it, it was quite a hefty bowl. All in all, the fish and veggies seemed fresh (and wasn't worrisomely fishy). I liked that most of the add-ons/mix-ins weren't an extra fee. And everything was seasoned quite well too (although some of that must be attributed to the sauces and stuff I added on the bowl myself). Fat Fish is a solid option for poke in the area - it's fresh, fast, and comparably priced for the area.

We had a great meal at Fat Fish. Bento box, poke bowl, and musubi. It was a little slow coming out, but everything was fresh, delicious, and flavorful. Oh yeah, the ice cream with a fish cone was pretty cool as well!

This was the best combination the honey oat and lavender twist. It was light, sweet, and refreshing. It's perfect for a hot, summer day. This was a perfect pairing. The fish cone was also warm when we got it. It has that perfect crunch. The staff got that to us pretty quickly after we placed the order. I highly recommend coming here for their seasonal twist. I've been cherry blossom season and love those flavors as wells. I like how they have unique flavors

My wife loves this ice cream so much that she made me drive all the way to the wharf just to get some of it.

I stopped by here on a cherry blossom dessert tour of sorts. Shop was pretty small and busy during the day before dinner time. It was kinda crowded and a little confusing where the lines were-- seems more of a to go or casual place. There was a little seating inside but there was also seats outside. You order through a tablet in the front and then wait for your order/name to be called. I just got a cherry blossom soft serve. It's very pretty pink and came out quickly even though the store was filled with people waiting for their orders. The flavor of the ice cream pretty much tasted like rose. The texture was really smooth, pretty creamy, but not in a super thick way, more on the lighter side. The sweetness/flavor was a little overwhelming after a couple bites so sharing it between 2 people helped me finished it.

A quick break for linner ( lunch/dinner ) at Fat Fish with friends. We got poke bowls, sushi & the Cherry Blossom Bento Box (seasonal I assume). It had a crab meat roll covered in salmon with sakura rice (pink) with tuna poke over seaweed salad with a salad and mini taiyaki red bean fish. It was all very yummy. Logistics: there are 3 kiosks that you order from when you enter. One was out of service while we there. You can view their menu online and I think you can also order online but we did it at the kiosk. I chose to have my receipt printed but nothing came out so I just waited for my name to be called. At about 3pm on a Saturday (during DC's cherry blossom festival), they were busy (naturally so). The 3 staff members were making all the orders as fast as they could and were very nice. It took awhile to get our food but it was fine, we hung out and rested at one of the small tables inside. There was outside seating but it was raining so unfortunately it was all wet. I would come back as it was a casual eatery and everything we had was tasty! It was an easy walk from the museums as well as the tidal basin.

Do not go to the new pop up at Water Park -- it takes over 40 mins for a couple of sushi rolls and they provide no notice and will not refund or assist customers that can't wait that long. You can also see them making the rolls and it does not look safe or sanitary in the kiosk.

The food was pretty good, the facility was clean and the service was good. I am in town visiting from Dallas and I was on the hunt for some seafood being so close to the ocean, and we found this spot. Ingredients were fresh and we got our food pretty quickly.

Obnoxious 8% service fee. I don't understand why restaurants in DC do this. Just raise your darn prices. Instead I just feel like I've been ripped off. The food is good but hiding the prices just leaves me feeling angry.

My son found this place while visiting DC . We had poke bowel and cherry blossom ice cream . It was delicious! Only down fall is not many seating . It's a small place .

Decent sushi, worth it when there's a BOGO deal but not worth otherwise due to pretty high prices. I tried Eel avocado roll, Alaskan roll, Shrimp tempura, and Gaijian, and all were good but nothing memorable. I also tried their black sesame ice cream with taiyaki cone, and it was omg incredibly delicious. The black sesame flavor was on point, and the taiyaki cone texture was amazing, so soft yet also perfectly crispy on the outside. Worth the $7 or so to pay for just that cone!

Cute poke spot but taiyaki ice cream did not meet aesthetic expectations. I forgot fat fish was at the wharf but I saw their taiyaki ice cream sign and instantly remembered I've been wanting to go. When walking in, I realized they do poke bowls and sushi too, So got pretty excited to come back since I was on a mission to have a taiyaki for this visit lol. I went up to their contactless order at a screen and checked out what flavors they had avilable for ice cream. Of course, vanilla was there but was great to see they had the fall seasonal flavor of pumpkin which happened to be vegan. Definitely appreciated that and the fact that they can swirl it. When going to extras, you're able to add either a mango or chocolate drizzle, sprinkles, custard fill taiyaki or chocolate wafer. I chose for the chocolate wafer and custard fill taiyaki. I appreciated when ordering the taiyaki, they let you know it will be a 5-min wait. I didn't see an option to have an ice cream filled taiyaki which made me a little disappointed but that's ok, a little one with my ice cream in a cup is still cute aesthetics. After waiting, my ice cream was served but the worker didn't realize I ordered the chocolate wafted and came to find out they didn't have any and said they've been adding a spoon of Nutella. I'll never turn down Nutella so, no problem. They also asked if I wanted some chocolate drizzle after realizing they forgot the wafer. At the end, I just got a messy looking ice cream. It tasted good but, my desire for an Instagram aesthetics ice cream was quenched heavily lol. Why is it so hard to get something that looks like their marketing photos?! Will I come back? Sure for a poke bowl but idk about a taiyaki ice cream cause ya girl paid $13.20. I'd suggest for Big Fish to offer two sizes of ice cream cups with one at a lesser price cause I couldn't even finish my ice cream.

Food was so fresh and flavorful. The bang bang shrimp bowl is easily a meal- the fresh veggies with their crispness really enhanced the flavor of the whole dish.

I believe this spot is a newer spot at the wharf. I love how the sun light hits the inside of this establishment. It's very clean inside and enough room for outdoor eating too. My friend and I went and got sushi because we were craving it and it didn't disappoint. The sushi was freshly made with love too. I believe the owner was one of the guys we were speaking to and he was really nice. On my next visit I plan to get more sushi along with some ubi ice cream. I've heard it's delicious. You can place orders via the kiosk and pay there too. I like that method because it gives the cooks enough time to make your food. They also move really fast here. And they don't sell adult drink

Overall I would give the whole experience a 3.5/5 stars. Saw this place on Instagram so decided to check it out since it was a beautiful day and a friend was in town. While the building is small, the menu seems to have a lot to offer. However, I had come strictly for the swirl ice cream in a taiyaki cone. If you're coming from the Wharf, it's tucked behind District Doughnut, if you're coming from 12th/Maine, the entrance is on the other side of the building. I ordered the taiyaki cone with a matcha/ube swirl in a cup while my friend ordered the ube in a waffle cone. While the ice cream was really creamy, it tasted more like vanilla than matcha or ube. I was also really bummed that the ice cream I received was already melting before I left the shop. The taiyaki also really lacked flavor. Rather than it tasting lightly sweetened and a slight crispy exterior, the cone was extremely bready and not flavorful. Since it didn't have anything to offer on the inside (like red bean or custard), it didn't really taste like anything other than bread (which also wasn't fully cooked near the tail). While I do think this place has potential, upon first visit, it fell short. I would revisit if they were to work on the consistency of their product and the flavor/texture of their taiyaki. It would also really help if the workers were just a little bit more attentive to their customers, it felt like an assembly line of food preparers without any life.

Amazing poke bowl. I'm staying in a local hotel and ordered Uber Eats from here. It was spectacular. The spicy tuna bowl was fresh, tangy, and delicious. The rice on the bottom was fresh; the vegetables were crunchy. I can't say enough about this place. If you are in the DC area, check it out.

Stopped by to grab lunch - felt like this was a great deal for $20! The wharf is never cheap but this was a filling and colorful lunch :)

What an unique spot! Ordering was easy through their consoles and our order was served quickly! The ice cream was tasty and the toppings were aplenty. It has a great location central to the wharf, be sure to check it out!

Price reflective of being at the wharf. The bento had sushi roll, poke, salad and mini taiyaki. It's a small glass kiosk next to the district donuts. Only about 4 tables indoors but plenty of outdoor seating.

If I could give this 0 stars I would. I have NEVER EVER thrown away food even if it tastes bad because I don't like wasting food or money. This is also the first time I've felt so strongly to give a bad review when I never review on yelp. But their soft serve taiyaki is SO BAD. NOT WORTH $12. I could buy two taiyaki that's fresh and filled with custard for half that price. The chai didn't taste like chai is was just barely spiced and the black sesame didn't taste like anything. The worst part is the taiyaki was HARD. Like a fortune cookie. I thought that was on purpose until I ate the thicker part that was so dry that I threw it out immediately. I saw other reviews of people saying the soft serve is bad and gave it 3-4 stars. I have no clue why they're being so nice.

I stopped by on my way home from a walk. This is one of the BEST poke bowls I've ever had. I did a custom bowl with spicy tuna, avocado, cucumbers and bang bang shrimp (I was excepting the bang bang to be fried but it's actually better that's it's not). It was pretty expensive about $27 with taxes and tip but worth it when I want to treat myself. The ordering is a little confusing if you've never been there. I wish they had a sign that directed you to order on the screen. The woman who made my bowl was the only person working and she was working her booty off, props to her. She was so kind and apologized for the wait even tho it didn't take that long. I will absolutely be back for the soft serve

Fat Fish was the perfect stop on our galavant around The Wharf! We stopped at boutiques, went on the pier, and discovered this spot for lunch. Delicious. The soft serve was berry flavored and so good, and the fish cone was like a waffle cone with an actual waffle-like texture at the bottom. The Gaijin Roll was so, so amazing. I had a hard time choosing which special roll to have, and it did not disappoint. The place was empty on a Friday afternoon, so there were no lines to wait and the service was great.

Best price for the amount of food you get at the Wharf! Made to order poke bowls and sushi using fresh ingredients. We were so excited when this place opened up. Highly recommend making your own bowl. They offer very generous portions and there are lots of options included in the base price with add ons available at low cost. They do have a rewards program for return customers, so be sure to sign up! Can't wait to try the ice cream in the fish cone!
