Where to Eat Around the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport | Eater Twin Cities

"A classic neighborhood pizza joint in Nokomis with quirky murals wrapping around the outside of the building and adorning the walls and ceilings within. The pizza at Fat Lorenzo’s is a worthy go-to, with build-your-own options alongside specialty pies like the New Haven, topped with baby clams in an herb sauce and asiago cheese. All pies feature a classic crispy, puffy crust. Hoagies, pasta dishes, gelato and other desserts are available as well." - Will Simons

The best restaurants and bars near Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis | Eater Twin Cities

"This quintessential neighborhood Italian restaurant is where paper tablecloths come with a set of crayons. The walls are covered in homey murals. Huge slices of scratch-made lasagna are chock-full of every kind of meat you can imagine. Hoagies overflow with massive meatballs arrive dripping with piping-hot red sauce and provolone cheese. Best of all, huge portions don’t come with a huge price tag so you’ll leave with your belly and wallet comfortably stuffed." - Eater Staff

Google
Solid choice for great Italian food with reasonable prices and large portions. I'm not sure what their secret is, but everything has great flavors. Pizza was good, but the crust could have been better as it was probably overworked as tough. Definitely going back, but I'll probably stick with my standard hot hogie which is the best I've had. Lastly, don't skip the gelato!

We’re from out of town and we come up here every year cuz the food (not just the pizza) is SO good. Great atmosphere, the beer selection rocks, and everything I’ve tried on the menu is fantastic. Dan was our server again this year and he gave us phenomenal service. Can’t wait to come back again!

Google
The food was delicious. The proportions are huge and can be shared. The pizza was amazing. The solids are huge. The atmosphere is small. If you have someone in a wheelchair. It’s very difficult to maneuver and there aren’t any ramps to get them in or out. If for a wheelchair accessibility, but if you have someone there to help you to lift and get them in and hold the door open. Then you can get them in from the wheelchair point of view. Otherwise, other than that it was an awesome place to eat an a cute little atmosphere.

Google
The best all around that I’ve visited in Minnesota. Authentic Italian. Good portion sizes. The bread was soft with a good crust. Pizza was delicious (slice of Lorenzo’s and it was huge). Good flavor on the hot hoagie. I didn’t need to add any salt or pepper to anything. Gelato was delicious! Limoncello and grapefruit together was excellent!! Also had the horchata. Nothing disappointed. Friendly staff. I’d eat here every week if I was a local. And I loved the atmosphere and the music playing. Italian hand gesture 🤌🏼 chefs kiss. Thank you for making my belly and soul happy!

Google
Excellent food, especially the artichoke dip. Our server was great and friendly. My girls loved the artwork on the walls and ceiling. We are visiting from Kansas and I am so sad e don't have a location there.

Google
Small restaurant and not a good place for large parties, as the space isn'tdesigned to push tables together. We were a party of 6 and were sat at 2 different tables. That was not a problem for us. Just a heads up if your party is larger than 6. It's always bustling and busy, but that's a good sign they are continually doing things right.

Google
The pizza was ok, first time being there. Will go back again when in town. Crust was good flavor but not crisp, and toppings made the pizza oily. Atmosphere was very neat, service was good! We will be back.

Google
We found this restaurant by making a wrong turn and we had to come back. I was so impressed. The food was absolutely delicious. Nate was absolutely amazing! This place deserves 15 stars, not just 5.

Yelp
My family and I stopped in for a early dinner. We sat outside and our server was amazing. He was friendly and on top of it. The pizza came out fast and our drinks stayed full. My wife did order a salad and that would be the only thing we wouldn't order again due to lunch meat and cheap lettuce but the pizza made up for it.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Overall, very sub par pizza slices. They are a good size but the cheese was just not it. The artichoke was also bland and not restaurant quality. Service was Stellar, but food was not good. I would recommend getting Dominos or Toppers instead of Fat Lorenzo's Any day.

Yelp
I decided to pick up the pizza at fat Lorenzo's, and the fat combo looked like a killer package. The good: The pizza was piping hot when I got it, so I know it was fresh. The crust was absolutely delicious and it had a nice little crunch to it instead of other restaurants thick crust. The Bad: The fat combo had onions in it so I only wish that there were less of them, and they were not as potent. I wish they were more mushrooms and green peppers. I actually didn't see any green peppers.

Yelp
We had driven by this place a number of times and some of my husband's coworkers had driven pretty far to pick up lunch here in the past and every time he would say "we've got to go there! It's tasty!". So finally we went and it WAS tasty! It's a fun little place on a busy corner but it has a little lot in the back, and plenty of street parking too. They do a brisk take-out business but have a cute little restaurant too with wood booths as well as tables. They have crayons and paper tablecloths to pass the time whether young or old, but the food comes out fast and hot from the kitchen so you won't need to keep busy long! We started with the homemade bread stick which is huge and doughy, and has a garlic parmesan butter on it (very yummy), and we tried the Artichoke dip because we couldn't pick. It was SUPER cheesy and creamy and rich. It came with little crostini toasts and I had read some reviews and added some of the hot peppers on the table and that kicked it up to round out the flavor! Very good! We then ordered a create your own pizza (medium was plenty after the apps) and the dough gives it a lovely edge with plenty of cheese, a fresh tomato sauce base that doesn't make the bottom weak because somehow they managed to get a nice crisp on the bottom, and very nice quality ingredients! Loved the atmosphere, the service was fantastic, they offer a nice beer and wine selection as well, and next time we will try some pasta and hoagies (and hopefully gelato)!! Great place -- recommend!!

Yelp
This place is awesome. I've only ever done pickup, but I just love the pizza. The crust is thick and dense. Despite having been around for 25 years, it's a breath of fresh air in the pizza world with all the neapolitan spots popping up(don't get me wrong, I love those too). My favorite so far is the Alfrenzo. I'll definitely be back to sample their non-pizza options, which I've heard good things about!

Yelp
Attentive service for ordering and help at good was delivered. It took awhile for us to pay the server as it started to get busy. They were able to accommodate our party of 6 and food came out as quickly as possible. Good wine and beer list for a small family owned restaurant in the neighborhood. The baked rigatoni could use a little more sauce. It was a little dry and I like to have a lot of pasta sauce on my pasta. The flavor was good with the sausage. Portion size was good for the price. The gelato was refreshing and the kids enjoyed it to the last bite with very little sharing.
google avatar

Victor M.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. Yoi walk in and smell the aromas of cheese and meats cooking on thier pizzas. The gellato is to die for and you see it as soon as you walk in. We had the chocolates and coconut gellato and thier mixed berry gellato. Absolutely amazing. The place is small and very busy but we were able to get a table. We had their bread stick and spinach artichoke dip. The dip was loaded with cheese that I'm still trying to digest but it was well worth it. The service was great considering how busy they were. Wait time is sometimes long and when you walk in there is a chaulk board you need to add yourself to so you can get a table. I normally just go for gellato but we were pleases with what we has to eat and everything is very filling. They have a small parking lot and also lots of street parking
google avatar

Yelp
Was in town visiting family who brought me here. Staff was friendly, service was great. Food was delicious. Best spinach and artichoke dip I have ever had.

Yelp
Fat Lorenzos is a neighborhood gem that gives back to the area schools by sponsoring various meals. Decent pizza, good pasta but the family fav is the Fats Special Hoagie. It's a cute little place with a couple tables outside and delivery is available.

Oliver F.

Yelp
Pizza was great! Sat outside on a Monday and had an awesome time. Our server was super funny. Can't remember his name but we were talking about Madison where we both attended college
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
A solid 4.5 all day long. Sauce is amazing, crust was perfect for this style of crust. Italian sausage was very good.
google avatar

Georgia B.

Yelp
What can I say about the best pizza ever, with real flavor and fresh ingredients? Once you have been there, you will go back again and again for the elusive perfect sauce and the toppings you prefer. Try the Fats: is it the olives, the onions, the meats, the chhheeesssseeessee?
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
I'll start with what was amazing...the aroma as you approach the door is wonderful! It made me anticipate a delicious, gooey, cheesy, tomato pizza pie loaded with savory meat! Yet, alas, I was soon disappointed. Stepping in to Fat Lorenzo's is like stepping back in time. That's cool. I waited in a short line to claim my online order (easy process!). Staff was friendly enough - not rude, but not really welcoming. I was given my pie and off I went. Within 5 min or so we were eating our small Carne pizza. Lots of topping? YES. This one, Carne, had red sauce, cheese, pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon and sliced meatballs. Toppings were fine, sausage has an odd spice blend. For me, the cheese was mushy, not gooey and stretchy like mozzarella I love. But the crust? Yuck. Way too much bread for our taste - very thick crust, sort of dry and not very flavourful, not even chewy. And the base of the pie is also very thick bread. It's topped with a dark, sticky marinara of sorts which ended up making that sauce-crust interface pasty and gummy. Bleh. So, we are most of our pizza - left the pizza bones. And honestly, just scraped the topping off a few slices. This is reported to be NY Style pizza - or even close. Sorry Fat Lorenzo's, we won't return
google avatar

Ruki R.

Yelp
This time I got the house salad without the cheese piled on, so it was much more enjoyable. The marinara sauce is good. The meatballs were not good. They were too chewy/tough. The mixture clearly needed some breadcrumbs and egg. Or something.

Yelp
Amazing food and amazing service, our server was Tavo and he was amazing with accommodations and truly a kind soul. The restaurant has a great vibe and ambiance to it. By the photo you can tell that we hated it
google avatar

Lynn S.

Yelp
We were craving good pizza and pasta and Fat Lorenzo's showed up on Yelp as being nearby and a pretty good rating. This would be a much higher review had they actually gotten our order right. And after a few phone calls, speaking to a few different people... being told the driver is on his way with half of our order that was missed... yet not one apology for the mix up or an attempt to try to make it right. The food was pretty good but based on how the delivery and customerservice went...we'd be hard pressed to order from here again. Such a shame.

Yelp
My family has been there a few times. The parking has been fine each time I've gone. It's off street parking. Maybe it's the time we go. My husband had the stomboli and he said he would have it again. My son had the garlic chicken hoagie and I heard nothing from him when he was eating. I think that's a good sign I had the chicken Alfredo and it didn't disappoint. We did get and eat dessert first. We had pink grapefruit Gelato and sampled the lemoncello and mango. We liked them all, because they were soft and not hard. It was prefect for the hot day that we went on. Staff is very nice and attentive to their customers.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
So many great options it's hard to choose. Very much love their dessert selection in any season. Only wish there was more seasonal seating.
google avatar

Troy F.

Yelp
Fat Lorenzo's was a hit for my family today! We had 20 family members getting together and server Dan was awesome! He took care of us like we were his family and every little detail was thought of. His service was simply the best and the food was as always, delicious. We will keep coming to this favorite pizza place for years to come. Thanks again Dan!
google avatar

Steven O.

Yelp
Small Italian restaurant that does it right. I hadn't been to Fat Lorenzo's in decades, but it's still great. The restaurant is small and low-key... I'd call it family friendly. We went there just for pizza and they were great. We'll need to go back and try more of the menu.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Another OK pizza place in the Twin Cities. Better than average, but that isn't saying much. Busy, with heavy emphasis on delivery orders. Small lobby space. Tried it after landing at the airport. Unlikely to return.
google avatar

ARi W.

Yelp
Excelente pizza! Delivery was fast and friendly! Thank you Fat Lorenzo's Excellent service!

Yelp
Good pizza, the only thing is I don't go there often and don't know it much anymore. It was a great pkace to go when I was a kid tho!

Yelp
Discovered fat Lorenzo's 20 years ago when I lived nearby. Two cities and three houses later I still find a reason to drive clear across town, over the river and through rush hour traffic to fat Lorenzo's I go. Comfort food heaven. Ambiance 5 - you can't beat cherubs on a ceiling! They do have a few outdoor tables but post COVID's it's a booming takeout biz. Service 5 - the person on the phone was friendly, helpful and efficient. We did wait a few minutes in line to pay for our takeout, but it wasn't anything unreasonable and the staff was hustling and working their tails off. Food 5 - carbalicious, cheesy, saucy, gotta put on my stretchy pants comfort food. If that's not your jam, get your takeout and walk down to lake nokomis for a sunset dinner on the beach. Save room for the grapefruit gelato. It was an amazing new find. Accessibility 3 - parking is tight but bc it's a lot of takeout post covid and the parking spots turn over fairly often.

Laurin N.

Yelp
I love Fat Lorenzo's. Great pizza slices, good variety and options. The pizza is so good that I have yet to order the pasta, which I imagine is delicious. They provide a nice ending to your dining experience with the gelato and multiple flavors available to order. Highly recommend!

Robert G.

Yelp
7 STARS - kind, competent waitress - many options - good scenery - real, delicious food - incredible gelato - Italian through and through - food looks good - big portions - food even good cold - plastic take out containers, NOT STYROFOAM! - reasonable price - very close to the Mall Of America - food comes out very fas All in all, give this place million dollar tip
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
It was crazy busy and luckily we got the only table for 5. Service was friendly. Food was tasty. We enjoyed it and will be back!
google avatar

DaMarcus Z.

Yelp
We tried Fat Lorenzo's for lunch and am glad we did! The location has a small classic pizzeria feel with the dark wood paneling and gelato counter at the front. We ordered a large pepperoni and there was more than enough for two people! The crust was thick, chewy and enjoyable to eat. The sauce was heavy (which I love) and the overall pizza was tasty. Quick and friendly service!

R S.

Yelp
Food was shitty as hell. Service was too, if I could give it a 0 I would. I'm never coming back. Papa John's does a better job, better pizza, at least the papa John's people smile at ya once in a while. The server still works there from the last time I went in there which must have been over 3 months ago, and he has no customer service skills, he wanted to give me another pizza I was so disgusted about how horrible the first pizza was I don't even want anything from this establishment absolutely at all anymore. This place is going downhill fast. They care very little about quality. I don't recommend this place by any means.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Great service! Great food! We found Fat Lorenzo's here on Yelp and took a chance. We were super impressed. Had pizza and side salads.
google avatar

Shannon K.

Yelp
Delivery pizza order was awesome! Got some cheesecake with chocolate and raspberry as well. Very good

Peter T.

Yelp
I just love the place. I'm 60- I've traveled all over the world and this is the kind of restaurant I'm looking for everywhere I go. It feels family owned with old school quality and service.
google avatar

Diane F.

Yelp
This place is tiny, adorably over-decorated and on a terribly busy road but all of that is balanced off by delicious food and friendly staff. We eaten there several times with a couple different groups of friends and everyone has enjoyed their choices. Amazing in this time when people are very picky. With my group of friends waiters sometimes ask "was anything ok" instead of "was everything ok". My brother discovered it while going to chemo treatments at the VA. We now meet family there when we are going to the airport.

Leonel R.

Yelp
Every time I order food from here if we get silverware I specifically on this day told the guy on the phone could he please put silverware in my food the food gets here there's no silverware so I proceeded to call the store and tell him a yo I asked you guys I need a silverware I specifically asked for silverware because I didn't have any the guy hangs up and says he's gonna call the guy never calls me back how the fuck am I supposed to eat this food with my hands I will never spend a dime at the store because of that didn't even apologize Or call me back you do this every single day how the fuck do you forget silverware

Ben G.

Yelp
I decided on Fat Lorenzo's after looking online for Italian food with good reviews. I was very glad that I decided to come here. Great ambiance and food was on point. What really made it work for me was the quality of service from Dan my waiter. Great job. He knew the menu, was engaging and he never left me with an empty drink. Ask for Dan next time you go !
google avatar

Hiroshi A.

Yelp
Good comfort food! Italian-American style meal, large volume, filling, and tasty! What you get for the price is a good deal! All pasta dishes are yummy!
google avatar

Joshua N.

Yelp
Preliminary review, as I've only eaten here once. I'll update this review after another try. Perhaps I'll get the pizza next time. I had the Fats Special hoagie. Had good meats on it, with sides of banana peppers, sport peppers, coleslaw, and tomato "aioli" that I think may have actually been french dressing. Unfortunately an otherwise impressive sandwich was ruined by being served on super lame, highly spongey Minnesota soft roll. Why is it so hard to get a sandwich on real bread in this town?? I know super bleached spongey bread is a Minnesota tradition of sorts but I don't like it. And neither should you.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've thrown out a pizza after one slice. Gross. Glutinous. If you like this pizza I'm not sure that I can trust you. For full disclosure, this is a review of a delivery pizza. I rarely do reviews based upon delivered food, as it doesn't seem fair, but this pizza was bad enough that it deserves an exception. (I also get the feeling that it wouldn't have been tangibly better in person.) We ordered a couple of breadsticks as well, which also was a mistake. So, the pizza. We got a simple pepperoni and green pepper pizza. I knew fat Lorenzo's reputation for a thicker crust, but was unprepared for the gelatinous 3/4" to an inch of undercooked (and generally tasteless) dough. I swear we could've peeled out the undercooked portions, made a ball of dough, flattened it out, and made an entirely new pizza crust. The crusty bits on the edge of crust were sometimes OK, but do you want to eat your pizza like a woodchuck? Ridiculous. The toppings were fine, as was the sauce, which actually had a bit of spice. But those good elements were unable to overcome the crust. The breadsticks were also pretty bad. They're basically girthy ropes of that same flavorless dough, and their length and form challenges the definition of "stick." They're more floppy than stick-y, and you could easily mold them into a doughy crown should you wish. There was supposedly garlic on them, but it was all carbonized, so you could barely taste it. It's clear from reading the other reviews that a lot of people love this place, and that it holds a special place in their hearts. I'm happy for them that it does--really!--but I seriously don't get it. Maybe it's a "Minnesota bread" thing? If so, it's additional evidence this state needs an intervention.

Yelp
Parking is not hard, they have a lot and there's a residential area that has plenty parking. The place has outside sitting and looks pretty busy. They have a little chalk board so u can place ur name to get seated. But as a hack, if u sit outside and it is available u get the table right away, first come first served kind of deal. If u sit outside you can also bring your pet!!! They allow pets on the patio. The waiter didn't bring a menu for someone in the group and that was a bit annoying but ok. The waiter took a long time to come get our drink orders so long that we were already ready to order our meals. Don't get me wrong he was super friendly but I was hungry, once we got our order in he was quick to bring the drinks for sure. CHERRY CREAM SODA- creamy and delicious! Omg I loved this soda. If you are cream soda fan try this one is super nice and sweet. Got the spot for me. This is paradise for me. NEW HEAVEN CLAM PIZZA- very garlicky!! I mean very very garlicky. The clam is good too but the garlic takes over a bit of the taste. The pizza was also creamy. It was good but I'm not super impressed as the garlic flavor was too overpowering. I think that the small size for this flavor may be the best bet. ALFREZO- looks sooo good. Nice and deep dish just like I love, tasted amazing. This one is a winner!! All the toppings mesh perfectly making a great tasting pizza, just perfect. This pizza is the way to go here. I asked for a marinara when I had my first slice so I could dip the crust, I got that after I received the check and only when I asked again for it. The crust was already cold and hard by then. Overall I know that waiting staff can mess it up, specially in a busy place like this, that is the reason why they do not get 5 stars from me, cause the place should be able to staff better to make sure mess ups are avoided. But with that said, the food here is pretty good. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is very chill. Still would recommend.

Hollie L.

Yelp
Everything was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The wait staff was kind, friendly and amazing. Not to mention the artwork around the building (outside and inside) is the coolest thing I've ever seen at a restaurant.

Yelp
I've ordered takeout orders before and can say that their food is pretty good. A bit small and limited parking, but otherwise a great place to get some good pizza

Michelle R.

Yelp
Pizza and the housemade breadstick were delicious. There was a big snafu with Door Dash but thankfully my order was still sitting at the restaurant. Fat Lorenzo's staff made it right by giving us their amazing gelato!
google avatar

Joshua G.

Yelp
Definitely, One of the better pizza joints in the Twin Cities. Their pizza dough is reminiscent of Digiorno rising crust but better. So don't sleep on this pizza. Also, there are some unconventional offerings like a clam pizza. So if you are into quirky pizza toppings with great crust, then check them out.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
I found it odd that when my elderly mother who orders there once a week for delivery was asked for a tip upfront for the driver over the phone. I have never been asked for a tip and have always wrote it in upon delivery. I'm guessing that Fat Lorenzo's is double dipping on the tip to unbeknownst customers. I cancelled the order and ordered from another restaurant, ran my card and guess what? Was not asked to run a tip for the driver upfront. A complete scam.

Yelp
Great food and great service. We were in town visiting and in the mood for pizza. Checked out Yelp and found this place. We ordered a large pizza for the three of us. Love the crust & sauce. Perfect combination of everything. I cannot recall the name of what we ordered but it had everything on it with more that one meat topping. Then we ordered a pint of the chocolate chip gelato to go. Very good. Our son had never had gelato before so he chose the flavor.

Yelp
A friend and I decided to stop by here for dinner since we hear good things and craving pizza! Overall it was good and we could come back buuuuuut I still just thought it was okay. This place is small and NOT ideal for groups or really any group with more than 4 people since most of the tables are booths for 2-4 people. I would recommend doing takeout. Anyways- we ended up getting the garlic cheese bread, shrimp alfredo, cheese pizza and slice of pizza Lorenzo. Our server was nice enough to split everything for us in advance by check and giving us each our own plates. The garlic cheese bread could be cheeser and the cheese pizza was okay but the pizza Lorenzo was delicious! I usually don't care for cooked spinach or really any toppings on my pizza but this was flavorful and just melted perfectly- I ended up liking it more than cheese pizza (which is my default choice). The shrimp Alfredo was good but nothing too special. Parking could be different during regular lunch/dinner hours but we didn't have a problem finding a parking on the streets.

Jay J.

Yelp
Gave this place a try while I was in town. I had a pizza and some garlic breadsticks with cheese. The pizza tasted like they made it with store bought spaghetti sauce. The garlic breadsticks tasted like bread with I can't believe it's not butter. This place needs to work on the flavors. Maybe a new spaghetti sauce.

Mark E.

Yelp
A true neighborhood gem! So many excellent choices... The hard part is trying to pick! It's become for my wife and I a weekly date night as the food is excellent, totally affordable and the service is always wonderful. We always try for Dan, as he makes us feel like we're part of the Lorenzo's family - and he's totally on it! The only bummer is: we order, then items that others have ordered go by and it ALL looks so amazing...

Yelp
I wanted something fast that I could grab and take home to eat. About to jump on the highway and I see Fat Lorenzo's! I pull up their menu and decided to get a cold sub in the interest of time (as I was already in the parking lot). I ordered the "Fat's Special" sub, which had salami, ham, pepperoni and turkey with provolone. I was quoted at 25 minutes for the cold sub, but when I went in about 10 minutes later it was ready. There was a plexiglass divider between the employee and myself, and my sub was in a styrofoam container. They are not offering free samples of the gelato any longer (thanks a lot covid!) but I ordered a cup of the grapefruit anyway. I ate the gelato on the way home as they didn't have any lids and LORDY it was divine. A perfect blend of the sour and sweet effervescence that grapefruit is famous for. I was so sad when it was gone, but I was looking forward to the sub when I got home. Unfortunately it was just not good. 90% of the sandwich was bread, and not fresh-baked-pillowy-delicious bread, but cuts-the-roof-of-your-mouth-it's-so-hard bread. I took the top part off and tried to eat it like an open face sandwich, but it was a mess. They included some sort of brown balsamic dressing, which was great when I dipped the "sandwich"in it since it was so dry, but overall it was a big letdown. I saved the other have to try on my own bread the next day, but I just lacked the excitement and it sat in the back of my fridge. I'd go back for the pizza or hot subs maybe, but a cold hoagie there was a swing and a miss.

Yelp
Dan was so welcoming! This place is great love the food. Thank you for the experience!
