The 13 Best Gelato Spots In Rome 2024

"If you somehow didn’t eat dessert at Roscioli, make your way around the corner to Fatamorgana. In addition to the classics, their rotating menu is full of flavors like peaches and wine, and banana cream with crunchy sesame. And while you really can’t go wrong with anything here, you should dive straight into the bronte pistachio or the pitch-perfect milk, mint, and chocolate flavor—the freshness of the mint is more powerful than a Listerine strip." - annie replogle, gillian mcguire

11 Best Gelato Shops in Rome

"A tiny, no-frills kind of place, Fatamorgana is known for its all-natural ingredients, but it’s the whimsical flavor combinations—and their claimed health benefits—that draw the crowds. Thumbelina (walnuts from Sorrento, rose petals, and violet leaves) is a taste sensation with pleasing crunch, while Thought—ginger, horseradish, lemon peel, and pink grapefruit—is a firecracker of a flavor that doubles as an instant hangover cure. It's an exciting, energizing, and totally take on Rome's favorite frozen dessert." - Maresa Manara

Rome’s 9 Best Gelato Shops | Eater

"“No tricks, just nature.” This is the Fatamorgana motto, effectively summarizing what lies behind the delicious and imaginative gelato. In all their Rome locations — the original is in Via Lago di Lesina; the latest is this small shop in Trastevere — find classic flavors and ones from farther afield, like the mesmerizing dark chocolate and lapsang souchong smoked tea or the lovely Thumbelina with Sorrento walnuts, rose petals, and violet flowers." - Luciana Squadrilli

Google
This was by FAR the best gelato I had my entire trip! And as someone gluten free, having a super tasty gluten free cone made it all the better. The pistachio and straciatella were super creamy and perfectly flavored. I do wish the pistachio had been a bit stronger, I found it to be a little mild, but it was still incredible. The employees were all very friendly. They always ask if you want whipped cream on top too! Which I did not experience at any other gelato shop. Overall, PLEASE make your way here if you’re staying in Rome, gluten free or not. I wish I could take it back to America with me!

Alexandra Ștefănescu

Google
A bit of a queue but definitely worth it! A unique range of flavours and great value for money, 3€ for a double flavour cone! Would have it every day!

Google
By far, this is one of the best gelato thst I ever had. The staff is super friendly, and the ice cream is made with natural ingredients and super tasty. If you are in the area, don't miss them...also it is worth a detour.

Google
If it would be possible to give 10 stars I would. The flavors where out of this world! They where SO GOOD! Only negative point is that the portions are relatively small, but the price is also really fair compared to other places… so honestly… it’s still a MUST TRY if you’re in Rome.

Google
This was our first gelato in Italy and it exceeded our expectations! I ordered the lemon and my husband had the pistachio. The lemon was unlike anything I've ever had before. Really flavourful and refreshing. The pistachio was equally delicious. There were two younger women working in the store and they made me feel comfortable enough to order fully in Italian. They were so kind, patient and helpful. Made the experience even better!

Vladyslava Bondarenko

Google
A lot of different flavors! They let me try two different ones before I ordered - with some flowers and pecorino cheese, both were too much for me, I still prefer more usual flavors 😅 But I don’t say it’s bad, no, it just depends on what you like. So I chose cherry, coffee and orange flavors: the last one was with orange peel, and it was veeery tasty, coffee flavor was like you’re drinking a cup of espresso right now, strong, but good, cherry flavor was a bit too sweet for me. Overall, their gelato is one of the best and you have to taste it 💯

Google
We stayed at an Air BnB up the street from this place and visited pretty much every day. The gelato is delicious and you simply cannot beat the prices. We had gelato at another place in Rome while out sightseeing for triple the price and we so disappointed. After that, we stuck to waiting for our gelato fix until we were closer to out home away from home. The staff was always friendly to locals and tourists alike. Wonderful gem!

Google
BEST GELATO IN ROME! we go all the time. very cool and interesting flavors. my favorites are basil honey walnut, princes kiss, and riso vaniglia. you really can’t go wrong though.

Yelp
We were introduced to this gelateria on our first night in Rome, via the walking Trastevere food tour I'd booked for us. Our guide said this is his favorite gelato spot, owing to the creativity of flavors and rotating menu offerings. We liked it so much we went back once on our own. They were busy both times, with a line out the door, but the people working were friendly and patient (which was especially noticeable on our first visit, when a group of 10 tourists wandered in after a few hours drinking, eating and drinking our way through the town.) The did have some interesting flavor combos lined up for us to try, but I went with the flavors I craved. Everything was tasty and creamy, and the serving sizes were generous. They offered whipped cream on top of each portion as well, which we passed on, the gelato was yummy and creamy enough without the added cream. The shop is tiny (explains the line) but clean, and they do a good job of labeling each of the vats of gelato they have on display. Definitely a winner, and seemed to be quite popular with locals.

Yelp
One of the best gelato places in Rome. Randomly tried this place and it was great. Did a food tour and surprise, those happened to be the last stop on the tour. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Heidi W.

Yelp
The gelato is on point and the staff is very helpful with suggestions. We went there twice on our vacation. Delicious!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
This was the best gelato in town! The selection of flavors is astounding! The person who is working, gave us his personal recommendations, and we both opted for his recommendations. I had a cup with a banana, flavored gelato and a hazelnut flavor gelato. My husband had a chocolate hazelnut Nutella flavor. We loved this gelato. I wish we hadn't found it on our last night. We can't wait to return to Rome to have some of this gelato again!
google avatar

Yelp
Plenty of flavors. Authentic gelato Nice place to go to get a cool down after a day off grafting on the town

Yelp
My last stop on the Eating Europe tour in Trastevere! The best gelato in Roma! So many unique flavors, too many choices and very happy that I can get this in Beverly Hills too!
google avatar

Jessyca O.

Yelp
Our Airbnb host recommended this place! Said it was real gelato versus some of the other impersonators around. It was fantastic. We tried a few different flavors, settled on couple different chocolate flavors for myself. My boyfriend got the wasabi chocolate, to my surprise it was SO good. Thank you!!
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Excellent gelato! I ordered the mint and would return to Rome just to have more Fatamorgana mint gelato. I'm a fan of American mint chocolate chip ice cream, but the mint gelato here was even better than any of that. So fresh tasting!
google avatar

Randi M.

Yelp
We tried a lot of gelato while in Italy and this by far was my favorite. We came here on an Eating Europe food tour. The flavors were so intense. So creamy without too much air being whipped into it. Oh and I realized that we have this same store in Los Angeles!! Now I don't need to plan another trip to Rome!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is one of my favorite gelato places in Rome but it doesn't beat Fassi. But it's a good second. Quality is amazing and there are many flavors. They have more unique flavors compared to other gelaterias I've been to. Though I just found out there's a location in Studio City, it sort of lost its charm for me since I know I could get it back home in California.

Food F.

Yelp
Lots of unique flavors, a new interpretation of an old favorite. I enjoyed beat the piensare? flavor with grapefruit, and horseradish.

Yelp
The last stop in Eating Italy's Twilight Trastevere tour was at this gelateria. On a hot day in Rome a gelato makes for a perfect nightcap, especially if you've been walking 10+ miles the entire day! Luckily for me Fatamorgana had also just opened LITERALLY ACROSS FROM MY HOTEL and I had it two days ago. Since this was my second opportunity I decided to mix things up a bit. I got two scoops of gelato: pistachio and basil/walnut/honey, one of their most popular flavors and a flavor unique to Fatamorgana. This combination worked out pretty well as it had a strong nutty combination yet there was a harmonic balance between something herbal-y with something sweet. While this wasn't my most favorite gelato in Rome I was pretty satisfied. Even without the food tour reiterating the rules for "what is authentic gelato" Fatamorgana passes what I call the "gelato test". They make what is considered "gelato artiginale" - gelato made from all natural ingredients, not from a powdered mix. Gelato isn't stacked very high, uses excessive artificial colors and takes into consideration the seasonal flavors. Always consider this when getting gelato as there are surprisingly a lot of gelaterias that sell "fake" gelato!
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
This place is so delicious!! We got the mint chocolate, pistachio and stracciatella. All were amazing but the mint was our favorite. The ambience is amazing and the prices is very good (slightly more expensive than Giolitti for what you get).
google avatar

Lori M.

Yelp
Small servings but amazing flavor. Super pleased with this location close to my hotel in the heart of Trastevere. You can tell they use qualities ingredients. Thankfully the scoops are one Euro each so you don't feel quite as bad that each scoop is microscopic. Not sure I'd rate this the best gelato, but this is definitely near the top. Their strawberry flavor alone is absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend a stop by this place.
google avatar

Lilian K.

Yelp
I expected a bit more from an Eater recommended gelato place, but this just goes to show that you can't trust recommendations on blogs where one person likely wrote the whole thing. Even things on Yelp can be disappointing. Overall is pretty helpful to pinpoint one gelato location out of the numerous in Rome, but this one is a pass. They have unique flavors but they're nothing special. Luckily they allow you to try a sample. I think €2.50 for 2 small scoops is ok. This didn't taste bad, but it doesn't do well in comparison to Frigidarium or Giolitti.
google avatar

Lin Z.

Yelp
The fresh whipped cream -as IF you needed extra cream!!- set Fatamorgana apart from the rest of the great artisanal gelaterias we tried on our recent trip. The unique assortment of natural flavors are also incredible, and they allow you to sample to help you choose.

Yelp
This place is amaaaazing. Really inventive, creative, and diet restriction-friendly flavours, and it was located on a hilltop of a super cute neighbourhood (Monti, I believe). It's crowded with young people and locals on any sunshiney day, and I went twice because it was such a lovely shop. It's around €3 for 2 scoops, I believe, and cash only. The flavours I tried and highly recommend were: basil, pink Venus. That basil though! It's not something you'd find easily outside of Italy, so I highly recommend stepping out of your comfort zone and dabbling in unique flavours, which Fatamorgana excels at. Go to your other local gelateries, which were all excellent in my experience, for the more mainstream flavours like chocolate and vanilla, etc.

Yelp
My mission to get gelato on a cold winter night: Cold Weather - 0, Me - 1 Especially after I heard and read such good things about Fatamorgana, I knew I had to try it. To battle the cold weather, I jumped at the option to add hot chocolate to go with my gelato, leaving no doubt that it would help me brace the cold sweet dessert at the very least. I ended up getting one scoop of one of the Hazelnut options, with little bits of chips inside (?) - cannot remember the name but the gelato label had Le Petit Prince on it, which was the ultimate factor in my final decision between this and the regular hazelnut. The hot chocolate was actually thicker than what I thought it would be... it was extremely creamy and thick, which then made sense that you were supposed to dump the gelato into it to make it almost like a gelato chocolate float. So I improvised and drizzled this hot, dark chocolate sauce over my gelato - making it still very enjoyable. My only issue (and my fault too) was asking to separate the gelato and hot chocolate. I couldn't finish about half of the hot chocolate sauce left :(

Yelp
Amazing gelato!! Props to this company for being so transparent with all their non-allergens too. Love being able to easily see which flavours are gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.! The selection of flavours is quite vast, and the prices are great: two scoops for 2.50 euro. I got a cup with one scoop of Madagascar chocolate and one scoop of stracciatella. Huge chunks of chocolate in the stracciatella, definitely the best of this flavour I have ever had. In a city where there's a gelato shop on every corner, the quality of their gelato makes them stand out! We went here on a weekday evening at 10pm and they were lined up out the door. The gelato is so worth the wait!
google avatar

Sasha T.

Yelp
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G GELATO! We went to the Monti location, which has a nice area outside (with a drinking water fountain) to sit in. I had the fiordilatte and pistachio my partner had the pistachio and coconut. All 3 flavors were incredible, but the pistachio was special. Best gelato we had in all of Italy. Our only question: they advertise as non-dairy... they're definitely dairy?!
google avatar

Lou A.

Yelp
oh my God! Artesinal gelato makes the best here. I compared and can taste the richer, quality flavors here. You must try for yourself. Fata Morgana won me over. Grazie Mille!
google avatar

Leah K.

Yelp
This is the best gelato in Rome. The unique flavors, the quality and the care...it's incredible. Some of the flavors I had were kentucky chocolate (it has tobacco in it...sort of an earthy taste), almond and orange (like a delicious cake!), and blueberry cheesecake. The blueberry cheesecake, though non-traditional, was INSANE. It's everything you want ice cream to be - tart, sweet, fruity, savory. Holy cow. Droolworthy! They have a few locations so make sure you take the time to find them!
google avatar

Darrelle G.

Yelp
Wow wow wow! We have been having gelato every day and this place is now a main competitor! Also they are ON IT with the intolerances! The avocado lime white wine was amazing and I can't wait until tomorrow to have it again!
google avatar

Trang T.

Yelp
This review may be late (almost 2 years late) but this place is freaking amazing. Gelato in Rome is like Starbucks here in the U.S. on every freaking corner. Despite that, I still loved going to this place almost every single day (sometimes twice a day) when I was studying abroad. I felt soooooo lucky that this was a block away from my apartment. I'm always recommending this place to everyone who is planning a trip to Rome and cannot wait until the day I come back and enjoy delicious gelato from here again!! ::D My favorite flavors are the matcha and prince's kiss (hazelnut)!
google avatar

Lynne C.

Yelp
Did a quick stop here on my bike tour around Rome and it was a hidden gem!!! Really great flavors and it was only a few euros for some great quality ice cream (small was €2.5) and its nestled in a great little area.
google avatar

Kathryn C.

Yelp
Very refreshing on a hot afternoon! Really enjoyed: Apple Almond Cinnamon, Paradise Punch; Papaya went well with Apple Almond Cinnamon; chocolate was like a kick to the teeth of chocolate -- i.e., pretty pure and not the american, creamy sweet chocolate. Strawberry was good though not stand-out good. Melon was popular with others even though melon is never really a thing fo me. The ginger flavor was super gingery - not for the faint of heart and not the flavor to get if you're looking for subtlety. Special of the day: Acerola was meh.
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
There are a few different locations of Fatamorgana scattered throughout Rome, so it's hard to miss. This gelateria is known especially for its more inventive flavors. I got a small cup of basil, walnut, and honey with tiramisu. The customer service was great as the guy behind the counter let me taste multiple flavors and was very patient when I was taking my time to decide on flavors. A small cup is 2.50, and you also get free cream on top. Some of the flavors here are very different, and it's difficult to choose. My flavors were both delicious, and I recommend stopping by to check out some of the unique flavors!
google avatar

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Oh my goodness, this place definitely makes the books in my list of gelaterias to recommend in Italy (or specifically, Rome). I've had good gelato in various cities of Italy, but this one stands out the most to me due to their nutritional qualities and the uniqueness of flavors! I haven't had organic and/or gluten free gelato here, so I really appreciate the thought they put into making their sweet treat. They have a lot of normal flavors that you can find at almost any other gelaterias in Italy, but they are for sure known for their Panacea flavor-- almond milk, mint, ginseng, and fructose. You will NOT regret it! If you are getting two flavors, I think the best recommendation is to get a neutral chocolate, hazelnut, or vanilla flavor with it since if you were to get two weird flavors together, you wouldn't be able to appreciate the beauty of one or the other. I ended up getting Panacea with Pollicina, which contains nuts, rose petals, and violet flowers. WHAT?! Who even thought of that? Up to two flavors is 2.5 euro. Definitely worth checking out this place to wow your taste buds.
google avatar

Leslie T.

Yelp
My husband and I live down the street from the best gelato shop in DC. We debated whether or not to get gelato while in Rome (silly, I know) because my husband was convinced that it was the same as what we can get at home. While this gelato was really good, I think it was very similar to a good gelato shop in the states. That being said, I would recommend the chocolate and hazelnut flavors. Very good! My baby was crazy about it.
google avatar

Seneca G.

Yelp
While in Rome we had gelato almost every day, 4 out of 5 on our trip, and of all the places, this was hands down my favorite. Their pistachio flavor was the most intense and complex. A little sweet, very nutty, and paired very well with a chocolate flavor. Compared to other stops in town, you could tell they used the natural ingredients to flavor everything and they didn't use too much sugar to make it overly sweet and mask the taste. They also had some of the more interesting flavors with a peach and red wine flavor. It was very good, but the consistency of that particular gelato was a little different. It was more like a sorbet, not quite as creamy as most of the other flavors. My wife had the cream, and it was very simple, but also very intensely flavored with the few ingredients that went into it. They have a few shops around town, so wherever you are, you're not too far from a Fatamorgana.
google avatar

Nghi D.

Yelp
Well deserving of 4 stars. A lot of selections and pricing is fair. Definitely try the passion fruit because this is the best passion fruit I've ever tried. I would visit it again if I come back to Rome. Best Gelato we tried in Rome.
google avatar

Spencer A.

Yelp
Extraordinary. Exotic and gourmet favors not found at your average gelato place. I had chocolate infused with tobacco and another scoop of dark chocolate. Interesting. Worth the effort to find and try.
google avatar

Jay Y.

Yelp
The scoops are a little smaller than others I had in Florence and Rome, but I have never seen so many flavors in a gelateria! As an example, the selection had at least five different chocolate flavors (Venezuelan, Sicilian, etc). You don't truly understand the paradox of choices until you come here, as the huge selection is so overwhelming. The fact that the gelato itself is so good doesn't help with limiting the choices either! Especially if you want to venture out of the classic flavors, try out Fatamorgana because you may find a flavor that is beyond your imagination!
google avatar

Liz L.

Yelp
Discovered this gelateria during a food tour on my second day in Rome. There is a lot of Fake gelato in Italy (I.e. Gelato Puffed up in pans decorated by fruit and garnished to make it look more real) but this place is legit with simple ingredients and nice staff. This is not the best Gelato I've had in Italy but it definitely offers an extended number of unique flavors (basil walnut honey, pear chocolate, etc) that I have not seen at other gelato places I've visited during my stay. The portions are a bit small ( small scoops) More gelato more happiness! My husband and I went twice dying our 3 night stay in Rome.
google avatar

Katie O.

Yelp
The flavors here are very inventive and this was some of the best gelato we had in Rome, Tuscany and Florence. Not necessarily traditional but so good that we will be going back a second time in two days.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Superb. We are gelatophiles. This among the very best we ever had. Clean place with great service. Wonderful array of flavors. Madagascar chocolate is extraordinary. Ginger cream, sesame crunch and the classic stracciatella were great. Bravo!
google avatar

Claudette H.

Yelp
Organic, gluten free, exotic and delish!!! Omg I had so much gelato to cure me for a whole year's worth of gelato cravings. The spicy stracciatella and the rose petals flavors were to die for! We went there three times in one day. And yes, I had a total of seven scoops of gelato. I did not regret it. The favors are very exotic and absolutely divine. They use natural ingredients and unusual combinations too. Wow. I warn you though, no other gelaterias come close to this one in flavor. Hope you're not too disappointed when you eat at other stores after you've tried Fatamorgana's

Dkuilan ..

Yelp
Fresh, unique and fantastic flavors! Avocado, lime and wine - amazing complication of flavors!! Can't wait to come again.
google avatar

Eric N.

Yelp
Good gelato, but not much atmosphere and somewhat strange flavors. Worth going after a meal.
google avatar

Yi L.

Yelp
Of the three places I've tried, this by far is the best one I've had. Fortunately for me, or unfortunately, it's soooo close to my friends house. I almost always feel obligated to stop. I've tried three flavored so far: Hazelnut, mint chocolate chip, strawberry and almond milk with fresh mint. The almond milk one was too watery for me. Like it literally melted by the time I walked out the store. But the other flavors were perfect!
google avatar

L. B.

Yelp
Loved this place! Got gelato here several times while in Rome. We kept trying other places but no where else was quite as good! They post all the allergens clearly. The flavors are absolutely amazing! A don't miss if you're in the area!
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
Awesome gelato stop with super interesting flavors and ingredients. I got lemon curd which had tons of peel in it, pistachio, and a chocolate with hazelnuts. Great flavors.
google avatar

Annika L.

Yelp
This place serves ice cream with NO added unnatural ingredients. Ok - I dont mind a few additives, but of course without is preferred! So far, so good. I tried the basil and walnut, and unfortunately I didn't like it, so I decided on two other flavors. I didn't dislike the ones I got (cheesecake and blueberries + pineapple and ginger), but somehow it just didn't do it for me. The flavors seemed a bit messy. I like it cleaner. And the licorice I tried from my sons cup was not at all how I like my licorice ice cream. Too aggressive for my tastebud. Could taste nothing after trying that one. Oh well, maybe I just did some wrong flavors. But since I dont come to Rome that often I probably will never try again. To bad - some of the flavors on their website look interesting, they just weren't available when I came by.
google avatar

Fiona L.

Yelp
Had Gelato everyday while we were in Italy and Fatamorgana is the only one that I went back to twice and I still think about them. The portions may be smaller than other places but the fact that they use natural ingredients is worth it. My favorite was Pear and Gorgonzola cheese and Pink Grapefruit with Ginger, Horseradish and preserved lemon peel. The combinations may seem odd but it really works! I didn't see any of these flavors at another other gelato places. Contemplating purchasing an ice cream machine so I can create my own version of the Pink Grapefruit with ginger and Horseradish.
google avatar

Fey F.

Yelp
After trying all the top gelaterias in Rome & Florence, it's time to boost this place to #1 spot in all gelaterias I've tried. Creative flavors, huge selection & frosty consistency. This place is a contender & will be missed when I leave Italy.
google avatar

Dusty B.

Yelp
Meh, average in my opinion. I had two scoops of gelato. My girl had two sorbet scoops. And she said the same thing I did. "It's ok. Tastes kind of bland. Just sweet". I think the Gelatoria Teatro and the gelato at Eataly are the best I've had in Rome. We didn't finish our small bowls of desert from this spot.
google avatar

Anthony D.

Yelp
Send me back now. Bomb. Everything is amazing and friendly staff. Great place to get a scoop and relax outside and people watch.
google avatar

Kira S.

Yelp
Hands down the best gelato I've eaten in all of Rome. Yes, I know it's a big claim. Gelateria Fatamorgana is off the beaten path in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome. I have to say that the chocolate gelato is the best chocolate ice cream or gelato I've ever had in my life, such a perfect flavor and the blueberry cheesecake is also amazing. This isn't your typical gelataria with the same old pistachio, vanilla, hazelnut selections. You're looking at flavors like rose, orange and hibiscus flowers and caramelized popcorn, chips and red campari thrown in to the mix as well. Well worth the walk out of central Rome, but bring your phrase book if you don't speak Italian as English is limited.
google avatar

Bine D.

Yelp
Delicious all natural gelato in lots of unique flavor combos (e.g almond cardamom, rosemary or pineapple ginger). Several vegan options (besides some exciting new fruit flavors). Very friendly & helpful staff. Free whipped cream topping for our kids.
