Best New Restaurants in Atlanta Right Now | Eater Atlanta

"James Beard Award-winning chef Terry Koval of The Deer and The Dove and his wife Jenn opened a wine bar in downtown Decatur in March, and it’s quickly becoming a neighborhood hang. As the name suggests, the bar has a tight wine and amaro program helmed by Matt Watkins, behind the beverage program at The Deer and The Dove. Atlanta’s coffee aficionado, Eugene Buchko, reports Fawn has one of the best new espresso martinis in the city, made with four different types of amaro. Sharable small and larger plates include dry-aged charcoal-grilled market fish, wild shrimp poached in cardamom caviar butter, and island clams with tuna. Fawn is walk-in only and open Wednesday through Saturday, from 4 to 11 p.m." - Henna Bakshi

Jenn and Terry Koval have set the standard for the rest of Decatur’s restaurants; not only with delicious food, but how they indeed fawn over their guests with the highest level of hospitality. Don’t be surprised if Jenn fills your water and Terry mixes your cocktail. Fawn Wine + Amaro, their newest adventure, is a clever and successful niche take on the aperitivo concept with a vast wine and Amaro selection that pair with a limited but curated menu.

Good food, good vibes. Cocktails are spirit forward with a great wine list. It is a seafood based restaurant and with cheese/cured fish board. They cure their own fish in house. I got the Caligula drink, really well balanced of spirit, bitter, and sweet. My husband got the bittersweet symphony which was more spirit and bitter forward, still well balanced. For food we got the snapper collar special and razor clams. Both really good. Ended with the affogato. I’d say it’s more of a drinks and bites place verse a full meal unless you do the tasting menu

Incredible small wine bar! Allie was very knowledgable. They have wines from volcanic regions and we had their Chardonnay sparking (Almacita Winery, Brut Nature, UCO valley, Argentina), as well as a red from Greece - Limino, Savvoglou Tsivolas Winery (“Lemnos Red”) from Lemnos. Chardonnay wine was dry, slightly bubbly, refreshing. Limnio was a light red…dry, oaky, and earthy. We also had an expresso, which was very smooth. Would absolutely recommend!

We really enjoyed our first visit to Fawn! The menu is unique and the dishes are beautifully presented. The amaro and wine menu is diverse and extensive. We can’t wait to come back!

This is a can’t miss new destination in Decatur. The volcanic wine and amaro collection is extensive and amaro flights are excellent. Food is seafood focused and superb. The tasting menu is not to be missed!

A unique and appreciated style of cocktail bar. It’s a lot of fun to try a flight of a few of the many different amaros out there, and our bartender was very knowledgeable! We will be back!

Decatur, a city nestled beyond Atlanta’s frenetic pulse, hides a treasure: Fawn, a wine and amaro bar that dazzles like a sapphire in downtown Decatur. As a seasoned gastronome, I’ve tasted fine wines from Bordeaux to Barolo, but nothing prepared me for Fawn. It’s a culinary cathedral, a sultry sanctuary where James Beard Award-winning chef Terry Koval conducts a symphony of flavors that seduces even the most stoic of epicureans. The ambiance is moody and intimate, like slipping into a velvet-lined confessional. The 35-seat space, crafted with meticulous care, whispers of European wine bars—think dimly lit haunts in Rome or Barcelona, with cast iron mirrors and exposed brick walls. The air thrums with an alt-rock playlist, a nod to my beloved Smiths, whose melancholic anthems inspire cocktails so poetic, Caligula would have blushed. The “How Soon Is Now?” martini, laced with amaro and yuzu, is a revelation—a drink that croons to your soul while tickling your taste buds with its herbaceous swagger. Razor clams, plucked from the pristine waters of Sapelo Island, are the freshest Georgia has ever offered. Served as a crudo, they shimmer with purity, their delicate flesh kissed by a citrusy zephyr and a hint of tuna nduja. Each bite is a love letter to the ocean, showcasing Koval’s obsession with sourcing the finest coastal treasures. The chef’s tasting menu, a reservation-only affair at the intimate chef’s counter, is worth its weight in truffles, caviar, and unicorn tears. At $195, it’s a multi-course odyssey that showcases Koval’s well-traveled soul. Influences from the spice markets of Marrakech to the fish stalls of Tokyo are woven into every dish. The bluefin tuna bone marrow melts like a lover’s promise, while the warm McIntosh oyster is a masterclass in elegance. The crab ravioli, though still finding its sea legs, sings with potential, its pure-crab filling begging for more indulgence. Koval’s ethos—seasonal, local, and fiercely creative—shines through, with ingredients like wild Georgia shrimp from Brunswick and dry-aged fish that could make a Michelin inspector swoon. Koval’s story, as captivating as his menu, is a love letter to Decatur. His James Beard win for Best Chef: Southeast in 2023 paid off debts and revitalized the city’s dining scene. His global-local cuisine, with partnerships like Anchored Shrimp Co. and Sapelo Sea Farms, ensures every plate tells a story of Georgia’s coast. A culinary alchemist, Koval transforms milk into divine ricotta. His passion and creativity are palpable, and his dedication to Decatur, a city he and Jenn have called home for over two decades, is the heartbeat of Fawn. Fawn is a revelation in a world of overhyped bistros and predictable menus. It’s a portal to a world of flavor, where razor clams reign supreme, tasting menus glitter like gold, and Smiths-inspired cocktails serenade the soul. To dine at Fawn is to fall in love—with food, with wine, with the audacity of a chef who dares to dream in flavors. Book the chef’s counter, order a “Panic” cocktail, and let Koval’s coastal elegance sweep you away. Decatur, you’ve outdone yourself.

This might be the best new addition to Decatur or should I say ATL. Fawn's menu is delicious, the staff is incredible (the host took great care of us), and the interior is beautiful. Oh and the amaro menu--wow! You can tell how much thought and love was put into every detail. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
This place is great. If I were to design a menu/restaurant myself (and if I were capable of doing so), there's not a lot I would do differently. Amazing cocktails, wine, food, and ambiance. All very niche, and executed exceptionally. It's against my nature to encourage more people to go someplace I like, but I NEED this place to persist. So go there, please. (The music is nice and diverse, and if I were to suggest one tiny thing, it would be to focus more on Miles Davis-type jazz... or some other consistent vibe. But that might be the only difference MY restaurant would have lol. In this case, I'm obliged to nitpick.)

Yelp
Fawn is a cute upscale restaurant nestled in Downtown Decatur. I was able to grab a seat at the bar. The bartender was very attentive and friendly. I ordered the I Wanna Do Right, But Not Right Now for a cocktail; wasn't a huge fan. I had the Fritto Misto (calamari) as my app and it was delish. For my entree I had the fruit de mar burger which consisted of shrimp & salmon sausage combined into a burger format. It had a fishy taste to it so I didn't LOVE it but I didn't hate it either.

Yelp
Walked in with my girl with no reservation. Ambiance is cool, but the menu is very limited and plates are VERY, very small. I ordered the Spaghetti dish was told it was a "good" portion and was given a small bowl of basically only noodles with 3-4 clam pieces and charged $40 for it. I get everywhere is trying to do a sort of hybrid fine dining portion experience but yea no, we won't be back. No changes allowed also on all orders ( & some of them need changes).

Yelp
Delightful experience after I arrived moments after its opening and ordered three items and hoping to order more, but ruined by the manager who first claimed, please move down the bar, and then said my bar seat was too far out. Wear snooty clothes and you will be just fine. Alas, I buy mine at Walmart. Except my cowboy boots! Perhaps she should have looked at those instead? Lol. I moved elsewhere and the owner ran ‍ to me in a vain effort of recompense. Toooo late. I'm an old, relatively wealthy Walmart kinda guy:).
