Serving Up Resilience: Indigenous Chefs Preserve Native Foodways—and Create New Ones | Bon Appétit

"A Winnipeg bistro run by Christa Bruneau-Guenther of Peguis First Nation that blends traditional foods with modern dishes to promote cultural pride and accessibility. The menu features items such as pickerel sliders, butternut squash bannock pizza and weekend bison BBQ ribs, with many ingredients sourced from local Indigenous communities (wild rice from a nearby First Nation, cranberries from Saskatchewan). The restaurant emphasizes affordability, community employment—primarily hiring Indigenous staff—and culinary teaching as a way to reconnect people with traditional foods and skills." - ByRebecca Thomas

Absolutely love Feast. I come every single time I’m in Winnipeg. From the tacos, to steak bites, to the eggs Benedict and pickerel sliders, everything I’ve ever had was delicious. The bison eggs Benedict is perfection, the Hollandaise is tangy and smooth, the strips of bison are a perfect addition. Cannot recommend highly enough. Their baked bannock is the best I’ve ever had and always get some to take with me. My bestie loves the bison dip. It varies by time of day, but if you don’t want to wait I recommend making a reservation. You can park relatively easily on the street and looks wheelchair accessible (I don’t recall a step, bathroom is on main floor and there should be space to use a walker or wheeled chair).

This is an excellent brunch spot with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The décor is thoughtfully designed, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for all guests. It is also a great location for business meetings, as the space includes large screens that can be used for presentations or collaborative work. The service was outstanding. Our server was friendly, attentive, and provided clear explanations of the menu, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. I was also very impressed to learn that the restaurant provides free soup and bannock to members of the local homeless community. This commitment to giving back shows genuine care for the neighbourhood and speaks highly of the values behind this establishment. I truly hope more people visit and support this wonderful place, not only for its great food and ambience, but also for the positive impact it has on the community.

I was visiting Winnipeg and took some local friends with me who had not been before. We all LOVED it. (Images are the Saskatoon Berry Smoothie, Lemon Pepper Manitoba Pickerel and Sweetgrass Creme Brulée) Service: EXCELLENT, they greeted us as we walked in, took our order quite quickly and even let us know what was not available and that the one desert was limited so we ask for it to be put aside for us, which they happily did. Food: absolutely delicious, it felt very homey but with a fancy twist. Everything felt fresh and it was hot! Not to mention our our cups never ran dry. Always filled up with water. Vibe: Nurturing - you could tell they took pride in their food and restaurant. It was small but cosy. The servers we happy to engage in conversation with us as well. Highly recommend.

The afternoon sunlight poured into the restaurant, making the whole place look like a painting ☀️🎨. I ordered the Shredded Bison Dip and the Feast House Salad — the bison was incredibly flavorful, and the salad was light and refreshing. The only downside? Everything leaned a bit on the oily side 🍽️😌.

A Culinary Hug from the Heart of Winnipeg 🌟 Feast Café Bistro isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience rooted in Indigenous pride, tradition, and hospitality. I came in for brunch… and left with something deeper. What I ordered: • BBQ Bison Ribs – fall-off-the-bone tender, rich in flavour, worth every second of the wait. • Sweetgrass Iced Tea – herbal, refreshing, and unexpectedly calming. Like sipping a story. • Bonus: the staff were incredibly kind and cooked the bison for me even though it wasn’t on the brunch menu. Indeed true legends. The space feels warm, inclusive, and grounded a quiet celebration of Indigenous culture through food. They use traditional ingredients like bannock, wild rice, sweetgrass, and bison, bringing them into delicious modern dishes that tell a story. Final Verdict: This isn’t fast food. This is food with a soul. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, appreciate the roots, and remember why food is about connection. Whether you’re a local or visiting Winnipeg, don’t miss this hidden gem. I’ll definitely be back.

One of the best meals I've had in Winnipeg. My partner and I had lunch for the first time at Feast about a month ago and I am still thinking of the food and the overall atmosphere. We ordered the vegan curry with wild rice which was so delicious and the bison ramen which I was told was also very good. It was one of those meals where you leave feeling full in a really wholesome and satisfied way which communicates to me how fresh the food is and the intention with which it is prepared. I can't recommend eating here enough and I look forward to returning on my next trip to the area.

We came to visit for dinner on a hot night soon after the restaurant’s opening for the evening service. We were seated at a two top bar table right away. Being somewhat excited to taste the food we order off the rotating menu board and the standard menu to get an idea of what this restaurant is like. Tasty. We didn’t mind but were out of water with no refills before our main course came. We had to have the previous plates cleared when food came out due to the very small size of the table. We would have stayed for dessert except the sound level was greatly increasing as diners trickled in for dinner and lack of something to drink. Great art and every possibility of a great experience. Too hot and thirsty to really enjoy.

We had a nice meal at Feast, our waitress was very friendly and helped make it a nice relaxed experience.. maybe too relaxed, as things moved very slowly. I think they run a tight ship, she seemed to be the only waitress running the dinner service, which meant there was long periods between food, drink refills and the bill. The food was solid with decent portions. I wish there was more interesting apps, many seemed similar to the mains so we didn’t really try many. We left happy and very full.

Yelp
Love it! Love the food! Love Robyn! She is the best and always makes my experience 10/10!

Yelp
Being from BC I get to eat a lot of fish but I don't get to eat freshwater fish much. And especially to taste pickrel which I grew up eating in Intario but only really get to eat when I come to Manitoba. Now you should know that a lot of places that serve pickerel serve a farmed fish from places like Kazakhstan (seriously). But not Feast. Their fish is local and fresh as is the wild rice they serve with it. Complete that with some roasted veggies and a little slab of baked bannock and you have the perfect fish dish. I have never had pickerel this exquisitely cooked. It was moist and flaked and perfectly seared. Great service and a lovely vibe and you have an excellent well hosted experience. Five stars for feast and a hearty best wishes for their continued success as they build and grow and explore Indigenous cuisine and ingredients.

Yelp
FEAST is the best food i had in winnipeg (which had a surprisingly great food scene) the bison burger (pictured, $25) is ridiculously good, with tasty bison, blueberry bbq sauce and bannock. lovely dinner to send me off

Yelp
A lively bistro! Packed at lunchtime on a weekday and very loud (hard to hear a conversation). Baked goods look amazing! I got the bison burger: the grass fed bison burger was extremely flavourful! Thin patty and lean meat, I personally don't think you need all the condiments to cover up the taste. The sauce is quite sweet, had a very thin slice of cheese and shredded lettuce too. The bun was sweet! Like a fried doughnut with bread texture The salad was nice! Shredded lettuce, wild rice, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds and vinagrette

Yelp
Here from out of town. The food is very good. Gamey, local, fresh. Its also something quite distinctive-the enormous emphasis on bison and wild game is something. The ambiance is relaxed, but delicate. And boy was the service attentive and nice. Knew when to pop in and when to leave alone to enjoy the fine food. All around a real treasure. I can see why it came very highly recommended.

Yelp
Truly fabulous food! We had: Feast House Salad Field greens, cucumber, feta, red onion topped with toasted sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, wild rice & homemade Saskatoon berry vinaigrette. It was really a great salad and it was a large portion. After that we had the Manitoba Pickerel with a fresh and tasty dill sauce. We also ate a mountain of their smashed mash potatoes! Next time we are in Winnipeg, we will eat there again to see what new items they have added to their menu!

Yelp
Food is overpriced, staff is rude and unwelcoming and the food is subpar. I had to pay an extra 2$ for guacamole and the disrespectful server "forgets" to add it to my pick up order. If you look at the google reviews, the owner gets upset and blames the customers for giving bad reviews on her food and staff but cannot recognize she's the one common denominator.

Yelp
While in Winnipeg, I visited Feast Cafe Bistro. This is a unique Indigenous restaurant with amazing food. I started off with the Butternut Squash Soup with coconut milk and a hint of ginger with corn chips. This was one of the best soups I've ever had! The combination was fantastic and it was very flavourful. I then had the Slow-Roasted Rosemary Manitoba Bison, served with potato squash mash, seasonal vegetables, horseradish, gravy jus, & wild blueberry compote. It was without a doubt an outstanding dish. The bison was soft, lean, and very rich in flavour, and the combination of the mashed potatoes and the wild blueberry compote skyrocketed the flavour of the dish because it added a bit of sourness and sweetness to activate all the flavours of the mouth. The service was outstanding and the establishment was clean. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who visits or lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba!

Yelp
When I came to Winnipeg, I found this cute restaurant that I knew I had to try before I left. Visiting Canada, I was able to learn alot about the Native American culture, and it really sparked my curiousity in indigenous foods. This local business came up which was indigenous owned, and supported the community & I needed to try it out! I ended up getting the bison chili tipi taco - which was DELICIOUS! I would highly recommend this big time. The taco sits on bannock bread and is topped with bison chilli, this delicious salsa, corn, lettuce & this delicious maple sauce thing! It was sooooo yummy I finished it in one go even though it was so big. My boyfriend got the butternut squash bannock pizza - and this was so delicious as well. Very fresh ingredients & unique flavors - you absolutely must give this restaurant a try!

Yelp
I think the concept of indigenous food restaurants is something that should be more popular and widespread. I felt honored to be able to eat here. The Bannock bread was really tasty and unique for me, I've never tried this type of bread before. I loved my "homemade very berries ice tea". I had 2 servings of it. Then I ended up getting the vegan burger with the bannock buns. I think I would have given it a 5 stars if it had more of something like vegan cheese or a more saucy sauce. Don't get me wrong though, the burger was still delicious. The fries were good but average. The service was nice and the decorations in the restaurant were really beautiful. I loved the black and white photos with a pop of color here and there.

Yelp
Great place, was there on august 20th for indigenous experience! Service was great and food was delish! Highly highly recommend and we'll be going back! Ravioli with shredded bison, cheddar bison burger and the rice was so light and fluffy! Great tastes!

Yelp
The food here is soooo good. The menu alone makes your mouth water. Brought my husband and mother here for a lunch while in town cause we are looking for catering for a summer event and we weren't disappointed. We ordered the Bison Poutine, Pickerel Sliders, Bison Burger, Bison Chili, and a few dessert Bannock. We shared around the table and everything was delicious. The only dish that you could say was subpar was the pickerel sliders as there was only two very small pieces of fish for such a large bannock but aside from that, it was great. In terms of ambience, don't expect anything fancy, its a bit worn for wear and more of a casual spot, which is no problem if you know. Service was efficient but nothing overtly nice or special, I think she came, took our order, got our food and that's it. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Love this restaurant -- I visit every time I'm in town. I order the same thing every time (I love it that much)... the Pow Wow Bannock Taco. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Came here with two my friends for the first time even though we all live in winnipeg. We were completely blown away by how good this place is. The service was amazing and the food was even better. I had the pow wow tacos both of my friends had the bison burger everything was great. We can't wait to come back and try the dinner menu. P.S try the wild berry bannock

Yelp
Wonderful little gem here in Winnipeg! Went here for dinner for the first time with my mom before our Fringe show at West end cultural center last night and we were very impressed! The restuarant has a cozy, comfortable yet modern feel. We both admired the lovely aborignal art and beautiful plants. I loved seeing the old theater ceiling tiles too. Our waitress was wonderful. The service was quick and excellent. The menu has unique & creative Manitoba options all of which are very reasonably priced. I am vegetarian and there are several options to choose from which is something I look for in choosing a restuarant. I ordered the butternut squash bannock pizza. My mom ordered the a chiptole chicken bannock taco. We also shared the wildberry bannock for dessert. We both really enjoyed our meals. Both of our meals were perfect portion sizes, but dessert is always a fun thing for my mom and I to try. Our meals were flavorful & fresh. We both thought the bannock was incredible. We loved how the bannock is used in different kinds of meals from burger buns to pizza base to our dessert topped with fruit! It was fluffy and very fresh. We couldnt help but notice others in the restuarant meals and how they all looked fantastic. We will be comming back soon!

Yelp
So happy that I was able to visit this restaurant while on my first trip to Winnipeg. The restaurant is very beautiful and the service was great. I ordered the Pow Wow tacos and it was delicious! I highly recommend checking this place out and supporting more indigenous run establishments!

Yelp
The food was good, nice to try something local to the area. Staff was friendly and the interior was clean and nicely decorated. Seriously, there's nothing not to like!

Yelp
A very cute little cafe across from the WECC, Feast is a pillar of the west end community. Chef Christa creates delicious dishes that are a 'modern take' in traditional First Nations foods (think bannock tacos and bison burgers). The staff are fantastic but service can be a little slow some days so give yourself plenty of time. I cannot get enough of the butternut squash bannock pizza!

Yelp
5 stars. Had the bison burger with bannock. Excellent! The homemade gravy for the fries was great! Topped it off with the homemade strawberry rhubarb pie! I'll be back!

Susan L.

Yelp
Excellent food, lovely & arty decor, great service. I had the bison chili which was fantastic. Others had tacos and bison burger. All good. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Had lunch today, my partner had the bison cheeseburger and I had the bison chili. The burger had a nice dark crust on it, moist inside. With the bun and toppings it was a delicious mess. The chili was tasty, spiced well, topped with melted cheese. The bannock was hot and a good combination with chili. Both meals were excellent, served promptly.

Yelp
This restaurant always serves up delicious indigenous based food giving great value for wonderful comfort food served in style. I recommend it to everybody. We recently held our wedding dinner here and everybody raved about the great food. Our only disappointment was that we couldn't showcase a wider variety of their great options. Be sure to go hungry because you will want to eat all of there generous servings,

Racha F.

Yelp
Nice ambience. Service and food good. The potato cakes were a little on the burned side but my son really enjoyed his eggs 'banny'.

Lisa S.

Yelp
This place was incredible. Lovely interior. Great service. The menu offers lots of options. The food is just incredible. I had the bison burger, the husband had the powwow taco, and we ended up ordering a pizza take home. Every bite is fantastic! Probably the best burger and fries in the city. The taco was awesome and the pizza is a MUST try. We can't wait to go back. I only wish they were open more evenings!

Cory B.

Yelp
Went for breakfast everything was fantastic. I had the squash cakes instead of hash browns, they were very good.

Yelp
We were incredibly excited to visit this restaurant and made reservations for a large party 2 weeks in advanced. When we arrived on time for our table we were told that they were working on our table. The place was clearly full and they had CLEARLY lost our reservation but wouldn't admit it. We stood in a very awkward and cramped entrance for 20 minutes while various staff came over to make excuses. I finally asked a woman if she was the manager and she corrected me that she was in the owner. There were no apologies for this, she claimed it was the tables fault for overstaying their time on our table. We were left to scramble for alternative plans on a Friday night at 7 pm.... And we're not compensated at all for this horrendous experience. I work in the service industry and this was handled terribly I understand accidents happen but this was awful. I'm sure the food is great but we didn't even get an opportunity to try it despite 2 week notice we were coming.
