Austin’s New Restaurant & Bar Openings - Austin - The Infatuation

"From some of the folks behind Justine’s Brasserie, Fish Shop is, well, a fish shop. It’s also an oyster bar, a martini haven, a burger joint, and more. The menu pulls inspiration from coastal regions like the Pacific Northwest, New England, and Ireland, so you’ll find a little bit of everything—as long as seafood and burgers are involved. It’s located on East 6th Street, next to Mother’s Ruin." - nicolai mccrary, matthew jacobs

Fish Shop - Review - East Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Move over, Este, there’s a new hot seafood bar in East Austin. Fish Shop’s team includes the husband-and-wife duo from Justine’s, a sultry French brasserie that’s our go-to for date nights. This seafood spot will likely also be a great date spot, with lots of decadent raw bar options inspired by Swan Oyster Depot in SF and Found Oyster in LA. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Anne Cruz

Had the opportunity to dine at Fish Shop for their soft opening and was delighted by my experience. The space is insanely charming , It’s a great ode to the seafood joints on both coast! It’s cozy and a perfect size to create a fun energy. Perfect spot to grab a table with friends, talk mess , crush oysters and pints of Guinness! The food is spot on , delicious .. I was super stoked on the conserva section; tinned , persevered, pickled and smoked seafood. The mussels were insane! I want that everyday . Sounds simple but a good Caesar is difficult and this one hits, eat with your hands , it’s fun. Honestly almost don’t need silverware here at all…. Maybe I’m a caveman but I love that . Rockefeller, usually a heavy classic, was some how elegant and light . Still hitting all the flavors . That’s a hard task. Crab roll perfectly creamy and rich , great bread and a good size so not to be overwhelming rich . Service was oddly smooth for a first night opening . My server was nice, efficient and knowledgeable. This will be my new hang ! It’s kinda what I have been looking for in Austin since I was born here in 84’. Ps. Be gentle to new restaurants , this is a hard business with a ton of personality’s and moving parts. Go in to just have a blast , catch a buzz and get full on food , friends and love!

We went for their grand opening and it was excellent! The vibe was chill and friendly. The staff were nice and attentive. The food was delicious! They were also very accommodating for my gluten sensitivity including offering a gluten free Fish & Chips! The uni butter they serve was so damn good! I’m glad I tried it even if I couldn’t personally enjoy the bread (which they source from Sour Duck). The steak and fries (options for thick wedges or thinner fries) was cooked perfectly. The drinks were excellent as well… I tried a Hurricane and Painkiller. I will definitely be going back and taking more friends with me!

I feel a little bad leaving a review that leans so negative. Historically, I really only leave reviews for places that are 5-star places to me because I like to be affirming, but trying to leave more reviews across the board these days and so was bound to run into one that didn’t exceed expectations at some point… I wanted to like Fish Shop so badly! Right away, you walk in and the atmosphere and vibes are just so good in my opinion. They did a great job with the aesthetic and decor, so that’s my one main praise for this new spot. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much where the praise ends. The portions were pretty small (I’m thinking about the lobster toast in particular, one of their most talked about items from what I can tell) and the food ranged from just okay to pretty bad. I want to point out that some of this is “in the tastebuds of the beholder,” however this was dish after dish for us. The lobster toast was a bit of a letdown when compared to some of the positive reviews I saw before going (although I also saw my fair share of negative reviews, just not specific to this dish). The clam chowder (not pictured) was the real flop for us though, and we each only had one bite. I’ve never left a dish so untouched at a restaurant, ever. I’m not sure if it was a fluke or what, but the flavor was off or just way too salty or something. Couldn’t do it. (And I feel the need to offer a disclaimer that I am really not so picky and will eat most anything. And at the very least, I’m going to finish a meal to get my money’s worth!) Lastly, we got the honey pie, and I don’t know. It wasn’t for me, but that might just be personal preference. Final note on Fish Shop is that while it’s a really cute space, it’s also a really tight space. To the point where servers have very limited room to move around, and at one point, someone accidentally dropped something that broke right on my seat (a little scary, but not mad or hurt). Not exactly sure what the fix is there, but would recommend not sitting at the side of the bar closest to the main floor due to its positioning with “traffic.” All this to say, I’m really hoping it’s just that they’re still working out the kinks, and that once they’re more situated, it will be a place people will love across the board. Not sure I’ll be one to revisit when there are so many other great spots, but rooting for them nonetheless!

Service: Unfortunately, the service was the biggest letdown. We had a reservation and were seated on time, but the experience quickly went downhill. Our server seemed rushed and uninterested in helping. When I asked for recommendations after learning they were out of my first choice (lobster toast), she brushed me off and said she had to tend to another table. After that, she mostly avoided us, and we had to flag someone else down just to get updates on our missing dishes. Food: Really disappointing overall. After waiting over an hour and a half, we finally got our clam chowder and oysters Rockefeller. The chowder was overly starchy, the potatoes were undercooked, and I could barely find any clams. The oysters Rockefeller were probably the only highlight, it had decent flavor and a fair portion. Unfortunately, the rest of the table didn’t enjoy their dishes either. The fish was overly “fishy,” and everything just felt small and off for the price. Atmosphere: This was the one redeeming part. The decor was charming, the booths were cute, and the vibe was lively. They even ring a bell when someone split the g drinking a Guinness, which was a fun touch. Overall: I really wanted to love this place, especially after trying their pop-up in the past and having a great experience. But based on this recent visit, I don’t think I’ll be returning. Poor service, long wait times, and underwhelming food made it a big disappointment - especially at this price point. And I don’t mean to be harsh towards this business, it was just a let down after seeing so many influencers post “amazing” reviews. I truly only share my honestly opinions.

The food is stupid good - crudo a la swan, all the conservas (squid with giant beans!), the butters (!!), the oysters, and the lobster toast. You honestly can’t go wrong. The martini rossi is a standout cocktail, and I don’t even like martinis. It’s abundantly clear how much love was poured into this place through the insane attention to detail, the beautiful woodwork throughout the interior, the art, the music, and extremely kind and thoughtful service. Don’t forget the fortune telling fish with the check :) It’s no surprise the all-star Fish Shop team put together an immediate hit, and that it’s already packed from day one. Austin needed this place so badly, and I’m so glad it’s here!

One of the best dining experiences I've had in Austin. The hospitality and food are out of this world. There really isn't anything else like this in town, which is hard to say in Austin.

A spot you will want to visit again and again. When you enter you’re immediately transported. Team and service are amazing, food is original and delicious. The atmosphere is vibrant with great art and impeccable design and attention to detail.

Google
Extremely Disappointing Experience — Won’t Be Returning I had high hopes for The Fish Shop after enjoying a couple of their pop-ups in the past, but this visit was a complete disaster from start to finish. The environment was so loud it felt like we were trying to eat in the middle of a construction site — not exactly the relaxed seafood experience we were hoping for. Service was abysmal. It took an hour and a half just to get our clam chowder, which ended up being a watery, flavorless mess with barely any clams and undercooked, chalky potatoes. Major fail. We had also hoped to enjoy a good selection of East Coast oysters — something they tout — but they only had two options available, one of which was from Alabama (??). Not exactly what you’d expect when you’re craving briny East Coast quality. The mezcal octopus appetizer sounded adventurous but was a chewy, tough disappointment with no real flavor payoff. I had previously raved about their Dungeness crab roll from their pop-ups, so I recommended it to my friend. Big mistake. After another hour-long wait, what came out was a sad, overpriced sandwich with barely any crab at all. This place feels like a watered-down version of what they once were. The pop-ups had better pricing, better food, and better service. I won’t be coming back — total letdown. Not to mention the server was very dismissive and short when we had any questions

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food. If you like seafood, forget about Clark's, Perla's and everything else you think it's good in town. No shade to any of those as they also have good food, but nothing even close to this. The lobster toast, the crudo, all of the conservas, etc. Everything we tried was absolutely amazing and well balanced yet simple. Justin and Nicole are wonderful owners and hands on. They came and introduced themselves to my table. They made everyone feel special and were stopping by every table to check in. The ambience is absolutely wonderful very lively and everyone seemed be having a great time. The place is beautiful, and the art is well curated. We were there to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday and they definitely made her feel special. They sent delicious honey pie and cook a couple of dishes. I would absolutely recommend this place. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Had a good dinner at Fish Shop! It's located on East Sixth street, which makes it an ideal place to start your night! There's not a lot of places in Austin that specialize in mostly raw seafood, so this place definitely hit the spot. There's service was prompt and the interior is cute but small. For food we ordered the Crudo plate a la swan. That was our favorite dish of the night. I love how lemony olive oil brightened up the fish. We also tried the rock shrimp carpaccio which was really fresh and delicious! We also tried the lobster claws which was alright. I didn't really like the sangeita it came with. For mains we got the crab roll, which was soo good. My only complaint was that it was quite small. The clams were also delicious and I enjoyed the broth. Highly recommend getting a side of bread to soak it all up. Overall a good seafood focused restaurant in Austin, but be prepared for smaller sized portions and it can be quite pricey.

Yelp
Common theme here on the reviews, but majorly overpriced for small portions, taste on most everything was a miss, and just overall a less than stellar experience. For a hot spot area of E ATX that was in need of a good seafood joint, I was excited to hear of their arrival and opening. I work close by so was excited to venture in with a co-worker, but by the time the meal was over that excitement has waned. Staff was relatively nice enough, and the restaurant itself is nice (albeit loud), it's really just a food and cost issue. Look, I know times are tough and prices are higher on everything, but the amount of "crab" in the crab roll was not worth $30 when a good portion of it was more so the binder sauce and less so the meat. We also had the fish & chips and while it was fine, it was a tad on the greasy side compared to other f&c dishes in the ATX region. All in all, I understand this is still a new restaurant, so over time I hope the kinks get worked out. But based on price point vs portion size, I can't say it'll be a "must return" visit to test it out again unless the grapevine speaks enough positivity into existence or things turnaround on that front. Wishing all the best to Fish Shop, and hoping the next few months lead to improvement and better outcomes!

Yelp
Extremely disappointed. I posted a detailed and honest review of Fish Shop on Google Reviews a few days ago, only to find it removed today - along with several other lower-star reviews. It's incredibly disheartening as a customer to feel like your feedback is being erased rather than acknowledged. So I'll share my experience here instead, as someone who simply wants their voice respected. Transparency and accountability matter, and reviews - both positive and critical- help businesses grow and help others make informed decisions. Yelp
If you are looking for amazing food and a super fun, lively environment, this is your place. I came here with my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday and it did not disappoint. Everyone from the host, to the servers, and owners (who stopped by our table to personally welcome us) were friendly, knowledgable about the entire menu, and responsive. I will definitely be back, this is now one of my favs. Highly recommend the lobster toast and the Crudo but you just can't go wrong with their thoughtful, unique menu. Also, if you are a creative director or just someone that appreciates attention to detail, you will love all the little special pieces they have included in their space. Where can I buy that cute fish water container? It's adorable! 10 outta 10 - highly recommend!

Yelp
Both the food and the experience were perfect. Speaking of the food, it's been a while since I've had something this good in Austin. It was delicious. Definitely a meal you can't miss if you come to Austin. The staff was also very friendly. Everything was very fast and they were very attentive. The food seemed to be of very good quality. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Service: Host was rude but the waitress was really nice and helpful Food Quality: It was mediocre, really nothing to write home about. For the price point, I was hoping it would have been amazing. Here is what we ordered. Deviled Crab Cocktail - this was probably the best dish we had, but small portion for $25 Squid with Giant Beans - very underwhelming with no flavor Clams, Oysters, Mussels - honestly did not taste too good and did not come with lemon Lobster Toast - for $32, I was hoping for a better taste. It was not bad but was not great either Crudo Plate - Pretty decent Mussels - Okay Aperol Spritz - the size of the glass is tiny, needed to order a few just to feel like it was a glass Price - Super expensive and not worth for what portion size they provided. Smaller than a tasting menu portion Do not think I will be returning.

Yelp
Did not prefer the texture of the lobster tail here. The meat consistency didn't hold up well and was soft, somewhat chewy not impressive for $30. The little burger is a good portion and well done but next time might ask them to keep that secret sauce out of it. 13 hrs later and I feel like so can still taste it. My buddy got the Fish and Chips... we all went around the table tasting and what did we unanimously agree was the issue? Salty brine taste too strong to pick up any other flavor. I've seen this mistake made by chefs who have burnt their pallet over the years from excessive smoking. May be the case here. But I may also "not know what I am eating" lol.

Yelp
This is a real review, not a soft opening fakey. We ordered a bunch of raw items to start. Crab claws at $17ish were so scrawny. The tins were tiny. Liked the clam one but not for the price. The boquerones, raw scallops and raw clams were strong tasting in a bad way. I am a fisherman and eaten seafood like this all over the world so I know better. The beans in one tin were reminiscent of fabada beans I ate all over Asturias but the portion size was so small here. The crudo swan was decent but the trout lacked all flavor. The fish and chips were inedible due to excessive salt (and I love salty foods). The chips were the best item I had. Very standout fluffy inside crunchy out, well seasoned. The clam chowder needed salt and brininess plus a little more cook time for the potatoes. The lobster toast was mid...the lobster meat was mushy and not fresh firm texture meat. Same with the oysters in the Rockefeller. Just mush. The raw oysters were good however. The fish sandwich (off menu) had same fish batter salty issue. The burger was way over sauced and the housemade pickles so strong and sour that the entire burger got dragged down with it. Could not taste the beef through the sauce and pickles. Fries with the burger, this time smaller cut were very good, crispy, well seasoned. The broths for the clam entree and mussels mariniere were strongly wine tasting and bitter herbaceous. Ive eaten these dishes all over France and these examples were awful. It is pretty easy to make a balanced broth for mussells mariniere to dip bread in (bread is good from Sour Duck) but these were bitter and bad. The johnny cakes were slightly charred which made them bitter. The butters had fancy ingredients but could not taste them. I got fooled by the "cabbage salad" and ordered it since I love cabbage. Was expecting something different but got coleslaw. Why not just say coleslaw on the menu? The room is bustling and loud vibes if you like that. Service was pleasant although we did have a snafu at our first attempt to dine here and the hostess was rude the first time.

Yelp
The quality of this meal was underwhelming when considering the cost. If I'm paying a premium price, I expect quality. I think that's what's lacking here... quality. I want to enjoy what I'm eating. This place just missed the mark. The mussels were chewy and disgusting. I even got a rotten one that still makes my stomach churn to think about. The burger? Please, please get rid of that sauce. I don't plan on returning. Ever.
