Been wanting to try "Fish With You" for a while now but was a little hesitant because it's quite specialized and I was a bit afraid that my husband would not like it.
After looking over the menu and reading reviews, we've decided to give them a try this trip. Suancai & fish is one of my favorite dishes and if I see it on the menu, I'm always tempted to get it. It's essentially boiled fish with preserved veggies. It is boiled in broth and the broth is traditionally made with the fish bones and fish head. The soup will also have peppers and numbing peppercorns for the spice. It's super delicious with some noodles & rice! The dish itself tends to be quite pricey back home.
My husband, friend and I arrived at the restaurant around 6PM tonight and were seated almost right away. There's a QR code on the table for you to scan to open up the digital menu and order from your phone. You also have the option of grabbing a physical menu and one of the servers will come along to take your order.
I had a few questions on the menu that I wanted some clarification so we decided to order with the server. According to the server, their Signature Suancai & Fish is very similar to the Laotan Suancai & Fish taste wise. The Signature one is set meaning you can't change anything to it. It only comes with Snakefish and the sides are already decided too (I can't remember which ones you get).
For the Laotan, you can choose between the basa fish or the snakehead fish. The snakehead does have skin on it so if you're not a fan of that, I would recommend the basa. Additionally, you get to choose which sides you want in your dish. If you get the 1 person portion, it comes with your choice of 2 sides and rice. If you get the 2 person portion, it comes with your choice of 4 sides and two bowls of rice. Unfortunately, you cannot pay to add more sides to your dish, which is kinda odd to me. The good part is ... the rice seems to be unlimited refills.
The sides that you can choose include: bean curd (was actually tofu skin), enoki mushroom, baby cabbage (napa), tofu, vermicelli (was actually wide potato noodles), black fungus (aka wood ear mushroom), and lettuce stems.
There were reviews saying that the one person portion is actually a good amount of food so for the three of us, we went with:
Laotan Suancai & Fish - We got the one person portion with basa fish. For sides, I went with the bean curd and vermicelli. This was super delicious and flavorful. I wish it was a bit spicier though cause the peppers were really subtle. The basa fish was delicious and easy to eat. Wasn't a huge fan of their bean curd (tofu skin) but they gave a lot! I loved the noodles though cause it soaked up all the broth. Everything was so delicious with rice.
Super Angus Beef - We got the one person portion with tomato broth. Similar to their Signature, you could not choose the sides. This automatically came with napa cabbage, enoki mushroom, and tofu. This dish was pretty good too! The tomato broth is clean, flavorful, and a tad tangy. It's great when you're not into the spicy and sour broth.
We also got an extra bowl of rice at $1.99 since there was three of us and we only ordered two one person portions. Honestly, it was plenty of food for the three of us. We were all full!
For dessert, we got the coconut lava balls. They were airy, crispy, and filled with a coconut sago type of filling. It was light and not too sweet!
The prices are extremely reasonable as well & the service is good! The servers answered any and all questions that I had.
Overall, I loved the food here. It's quite specialized and it's not for everyone. But they do have non-fish dishes and sides for those that aren't huge fans. I am definitely returning when I am in the area again!
