Houston’s Best Ube Desserts | Eater Houston

"This beloved destination for Filipino street eats boasts a lengthy menu of favorites like pecan-smoked pork skewers, garlic rice, and chopped longanisa wraps, but don’t fill up before sampling its sweet ube ice cream. The halo-halo, a popular Filipino dessert, incorporates sweet ube and vanilla ice-cream in a decadent mess of shaved ice, flan, jackfruit, coconut jellies and sweet red beans for a truly epic dessert. For something simpler, go with the ice cream burger, in which ube and vanilla ice cream is drizzled with condensed milk and sandwiched between a freshly toasted sesame bun." - Megha McSwain

Google
Great spot in our part of town. Fun and tasty fusion food. Come support this place! Great food, Good kids menu, and very friendly staff. If you’re not that adventurous at least come for the burgers. Fresh, juicy, and a satisfying! The buns make their burgers sooo satisfying. Support the small guys! Let’s see them thrive.

Google
It was really excellent! My aunt was in town and I took her here. We sampled a little bit of everything. She loved the food just as much as I do! We got the Amboy Burger, Pupu chicken, beef empanadas, pork belly and the Ube egg rolls.

Google
Good food, I got the “chiks n joy”. Crispy chicken. Gravy on top. Rice on the side with eggs made how you like, and huge serving size! Be ready to get a Togo plate :) . Cute little restaurant inside too, good music. Good vibes all around.

Travelled from Calgary, Alberta Canada. We wanted some Halo Halo .. but as soon as I could smell the garlic fried rice . It was game over. The portions were super large and food was amazing. I will be back as I was relocated to Houston for work . Great job guys for the food and size servings !!

Google
The food is so delicious 😋🤤. The garlic fried rice with steak was amazing 🤤. The chicken bites were addicting and delicious 😋. The burger with the egg rolls 🤤 (you just can't go wrong with almost any item on their menu!). The atmosphere is family friendly, and we had fun singing karaoke 🎤😁. It's definitely a cool place to hang out with friends or family and have some good laughs. I recommend this Filipino restaurant 💯.

Google
The stuffed mushroom sandwich was amazing. I like that it was stuffed with a mix of yellow and white cheeses instead of the typical mozzarella. I've had many stuffed mushroom sandwiches, and this one is at the top of the top. The bun had a slightly sweet flavor with a light, airy, fluffy texture. I appreciated the presentation with the little heart drawn with the sauce. The tots were fried to perfection, and the cucumber watermelon infused water was balanced and refreshing.

Google
We ordered family style so we could try several dishes. The BBQ pork, and chicken pupu were fantastic. We had halo halo for dessert which was perfect and not too sweet.

Google
Taste of the Philippines. Very representative of their cuisine. Garlic rice 🍚 and ginger chicken 🐔 was delicious 😋. Lechon was cooked perfectly. Cantaloupe Agua Fresca was refreshing. Many flavors to choose from.

Yelp
Great burgers omg!! The best layers on a burger that I've had. You just gotta try it. Get the one with the fried mushroom on it. So Good. So far everything I've gotten here minus the beef patty with gravey have been exceptional. Service is good and you can dine in.

Yelp
Sisguy plate or whatever, the Thursday Special. I am in for the Thursday Special which is pork, rice, egg, and two egg rolls! Except I didn't get my egg rolls which is hella disappointing given the fact it's part of the meal and best part. Not the first time they messed up my order unfortunately. The potato's and port butts were burnt af and extremely oily. Since we're here now another thing I don't like about this place is you can't call in an order like wtf? Also when you order online they charge you an online ordering fee like wtf again? You won't let me call it in and charge me a fee for ordering online? I don't get it. The place is okay now, they really have lost their touch with the brick and mortar stores however the food use to be so authentic and good before. Now it's a 6/10 unfortunately. What sucks is I use to really like this place but this is now multiple times they've messed up my simple to go order and the quality in food has gone down every time. Wish management would crack down on who's running the kitchen nowadays.

Yelp
I walked in thinking it was more of fast food, grab and go place but surprised to see it was more of a restaurant and had several patrons sitting. As noted in others reviews, the staff members are as helpful and friendly as everyone noted. Liked the charm of the restaurant, gotta love a place that has a Unicorn on its wall I only ordered one entree and really enjoyed it. The portion was just right for lunch, for 1 person, felt full but not overwhelmed. The potatoes were well seasoned, the rice was delicious even on its own and the steak was thinly sliced and also seasoned well. They also offer sodas, canned drinks and juices. I ordered the mango passionfruit which they said they were out of (pet peeve), so I went with cucumber. But was disappointed because I thought it was made in house but judging from taste and neon look, I'm judging it was just canned juice poured in cup. Besides the juice, I enjoyed myself and will definitely be back to try other items on menu!

Yelp
The burger was tasty, but a little overpowered by the bun. The fries are good and the Lumpia were great. Our server was very attentive, and the place itself is cute. They have different specials for each day of the week where you can save a few bucks. I'm glad I finally got to give this place a try. However it didn't quite live up to all the hype.

Yelp
Got a puet burger, was good but texture of the pork was very soft if you not into that. Overall burger is good and best fries any where hands down. Hidden gem tucked off fr fr

Yelp
Yo, I pass through here often and I never thought to check this place out before. It's a very simple and clean restaurant with a really kind and tentative staff. Also oddly very homely too. But that's just icing. Food was amazing. Having personally not enjoyed some other filipino restaurants in town as much I came in with no exceptional expectations. Boy was I in for a treat. Portion sizing is huge for the price you pay. And despite its size, it's also extremely tasty! Everything I ate was Super well seasoned and very balanced. Not too greasy but enough to taste all its flavor, nothing was clumped up, representation of each ingredient was well pronounced... just go. High recommend for first time visitors to order the Mini Kamayan. It'll give a smorgasbord of everything they got going on here. :D Won't regret it! 2 beers, 1 cocktail, 2 appetizers, 1 smorgasbord = $90

Yelp
Parking on site. This Flip 'n Patties location has a cozy vibe, nice interior decor. Service was good. The Flores de mayo fries were alright. My go to dish is typically the chicken pupu plate; my biggest gripe is the lumpias are not included in this dish like the Downtown location. Also it felt like there was less sauce on the chicken but the food still tasted good. Didn't expect the Flipanadas to be a bit spicy but they were super delicious! Overall enjoyed dinner and time here with a group of friends!

Yelp
Great location with lots of parking space in a strip mall. First time here! Found in yelp with great reviews so had to check it out and of course, Yelp didn't disappoint! It was Friday Karaoke night so as a Filipino, had to sing, lol. Food was awesome not greasy at all. Would definitely come back when in the area!

Yelp
My husband and I were in Houston for a night and this place had really good reviews, so we thought to give it a try. The service was good, and the restaurant itself was nice and well kept. Overall our only problem was the food. It just wasn't good.... Maybe we got the wrong things, but both were said to be popular dishes. I got the pupu plate which consisted of garlic chicken and rice, and a small cucumber slaw. The chicken was just not up to par. The pieces of chicken were very fatty and had some very hard pieces as well. The rice was rice and the small salad was exactly that. But the chicken was disappointing. My husband got the burger and again it was just poorly cooked. The burger was dry yet oily at the same time. Overall the flavors on the burger just didn't work. Again the staff were pleasant and the restaurant was nice but not enough to try it again. :(

Yelp
Flip 'n Patties located on a quiet street in the Energy corridor is a Filipino street food restaurant in Houston that serves up delicious and creative Asian fusion Filipino dishes. The menu is large featuring everything from their specialty burgers to a wide variety of items, from classic Filipino dishes like lechon and to more unique fusion creations like the puet burger and their Tito Don's BBQ. Last weekend, we took my folks to Flip 'n Patties for an early Father's Day meal, and we all had a great time. We came around noon and it was the perfect time to enjoy a good meal on a hot day. My hubby and I both had the puet burger, which is a akaushi beef, marinated pecan smoked pork butt, sautéed onions, provolone, houseblend mayo. Our server recommended to cook it medium rare and it was cooked perfectly and was incredibly flavorful and juicy. I have to say this is now our new favorite burger place. Probably one of the best burgers I've had in Houston since we've lived here. My dad had the Lechon Kawali Plato which was super fresh and super crunchy pork belly bites served with garlic rice. I took a few bites of the lechon was very impressed. It had the right amount of crunch and softness. For dessert, we started with ordering one halo halo and then realized that 4 people would have to be polite in sharing one big bowl. That didn't work out so well, so we ordered another halo halo. The halo halo at Flip 'n Patties served in a cold, white bowl was amazing. The shaved ice was perfectly sweet and refreshing, and the flan and Uber ice cream and boba like beans and toppings were so delicious. The service we got from the young man at Flip 'n Patties was excellent. He was always smiling, so patient, friendly and attentive, and was happy to answer any questions we had about the menu. Overall, we had a great experience at Flip 'n Patties. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was fun and inviting. I would definitely recommend Flip 'n Patties to anyone looking for a unique dining experience.

Yelp
Classic Patty Slider: I visited during the Magic Hours, and I have to say, these sliders were absolutely amazing! I ordered my patty cooked medium rare, and it turned out to be juicy and the best patty I've ever had. The patty itself was thick, making it a substantial slider. The bun was soft, and every element of this slider was fantastic. 10/10 Chicken Pupu: This dish was also really good! It had a taste similar to chicken karaage, but I actually enjoyed the chicken pupu more. It was cooked perfectly, resulting in a crispy texture with a satisfying crunch in every bite. The flavor was on point as well. 10/10 Fries: The fries were freshly made and served hot, which was great. However, I found them to be a bit too salty for my taste. They tasted like typical homemade fries, but I would recommend trying their sauces as they complement the fries well. 8/10 Service: The staff was very friendly, providing excellent service. 10/10

Yelp
The service is good in this place. The ambiance is very cool! The only complain we have is the HALO-HALO! We got excited to try it this place but was disappointed! The ice is very big and hard to chew. In short, those are not for halo-halo kind of ice. Not a lot of toppings too! And very EXPENSIVE! It's a $20 halo-halo! Not worth it! Not good! Don't get halo-halo here!
google avatar

Yelp
Quality, fresh Filipino food with a twist! I stopped by here with my family on our way through Houston and we were not disappointed! The service was excellent, food fresh and restaurant was bright & cheery. If we go again, we will probably pass on the empanadas, but they are worth a try. The sampler plate we shared was very good and the garlic rice was on point!

Yelp
This place was fire man. The flavors were delicious, the restaurant was a vibe, and the service was quick. Huge emphasis on the food being delicious. Definitely coming here again to try more things on the menu

Yelp
I used to come here years ago when I used to lived down the street. I have since moved and decided to come back since they were having a fundraiser for my kids school. The food is still delicious as always. Everything is flavorful and cooked to perfection. The customer service was great and our waiter was awesome and super friendly. It's very spacious inside with unique decor. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Amazing service and food quality. Our server gave us her personal recommendations for the sauces for our burger and it completely elevated the dish. Food was amazing, especially the halo halo, and the ambiance was great.

Yelp
Strong 4.5 Stars! I don't know why I haven't been here sooner because it had been in my radar being an aficionado of Filipino cuisine. I finally had a chance to visit this restaurant really basing it on the reviews and the menu I saw on Yelp. It really looked inviting and I recognized a lot of the food. This is an Filipino-American fusion joint and I like what they are doing here. It was a Friday night which apparently is karaoke night which means people could sing if they wanted to but most people were there to just dine on the delicious food. Yes, I say delicious because I really enjoyed what I ordered which was the Jeepney burger and a side of the fries. The fries was 25% off that night which was great to hear. The ingredients were top quality and the taste of my burger was so good. The combination of the beef with longanisa which is a Filipino sweet sausage along with tomatoes, cheese, and a fried egg with a special tang sauce as they call it. Top this off with the siopao bun which is a breading used for the filipino steamed buns which has a hint of sweetness to it. The fries were awesome too with cheese and special sauce loaded on top as well. I really was satisfied and glad I had a chance to stop in and will definitely be returning again with friends so we can sample a bunch of plates.

Yelp
Loved their food; awesome ambience and Jeremiah was a fantastic server. Will certainly visit this place again. Going their during HTX week was even better

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurant started out as a food truck. And a great restaurant to getting people to try Filipino style food for the first time. The burger is very good and other Filipino food on the menu ready tasty. The atmosphere is very chill. I have brought many friends here and they all loved the food here. I usually get the burgers like Flip 'n Patties Burger. It's really big. I love the fact that because my disability the server volunteer to ask me if I want my burger to be cutting in half so it would be easier for me to eat. Flip 'n Patties is one of my favorite restaurant in Houston.
google avatar

Judy C.

Yelp
Ordered the Mini Kamayan and it was a delicious meat feast! Got to try a little of everything. It was my colleagues first time and they really like the patty and chicken and garlic rice. Usually I get the pupu platter and I'm glad I got to try the mini Kamayan this time. I liked how it was presented in the traditional way. Service was great and had good hospitality! Parking - within the plaza

Yelp
Very wood and quick. Not your ordinary but fresh fast and flavorful. Worth a try. We enjoyed a couple beers and rice plates and had excellent and quick service.

Yelp
They had a food truck when we tried them for the first time, and their burgers were excellent; however, it was free, so I didn't know the actual price. But I think I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start with the restaurant. As you walk in, you're immediately greeted with a booming hello..asking if it's dine-in or take-out. The customer and the waiting service were good. The place is decorated with some graffiti and some nostalgia for the Philippines. The restaurant is clean and has lots of seating. As for the food - I had the Chicken pupu plate. It was fried breaded chicken ginger sauce, not too much of a Pinoy dish. It was served with white rice with Japanese seasoning. I was disappointed they didn't serve it with garlic fried rice, a staple in the Pinoy dishes. My son had the lechon kawali, which he was happy with. My Wife (the gringa) had the Amboy burger, which was a little pricey-$15 dollars. I guess the price was justified with the Akashi beef (American Wagu). She was pleased. Overall I was satisfied with the food and service. Oh wait, we did order the flip rolls (aka lumpia). I thought I was a little bland and hoped they would make their own sauce vs a bottled one.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service. Got in just under the wire for the lunch special and it was almost more than I could eat. I was up for the challenge though! Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Angelica L.

Yelp
This was my favorite food truck back when food trucks first were kickin off in Houston back in 2010-2011, Flip N Patties came into the game 2012 and it was fire! This was our first time at their restaurant, we were excited! Ambiance is lovely. Service was top notch, every waiter came by our table throughout our stay just to make sure we had all we needed. Servings are super generous which left us no room for dessert! So we will definitely be back to try out the Halo Halo! We got our faves from back in our days, the Chicken Pupu, the loaded fries and the Empanadas. One small thing, wish the Chicken Pupu was glazed in that yummy sauce like back in the day!

Yelp
I can't remember when I was at Flip n Patties before. But every time my Yelper friends want to go get some Filipino burgers, I always follow suits. Driving from Chinatown was a breeze, just hop on West Park Toll Road to Eldridge. Last Saturday was delayed because of a crazy roadway construction on top of Saturday traffic. I enjoyed looking at the neighborhood that had changed over the years. Parking was easy. Flip n Patties is right in the middle of the strip mall and doesn't need to look far from driving into the parking lot. I really like the modern decor inside of the restaurant. There was a purple bear sitting on a rocking chair greeted me as I walked in. I get to choose to order at the counter or the server came to table to the our orders. I'm not too much of a burger person. But I usually do the halo-halo thing. After I saw other people's bowl was huge, I asked for a smaller size one. Because I hate to waste food, I didn't mind paying extra. Anyhow, the price was 15% off of full size dish. Know the math before you get what I got.

Yelp
I haven't eaten a lot of Filipino food, so when I discovered this place I was super excited to try it. I absolutely LOVE garlic rice and it's on the menu. When we arrived, it was a seat yourself and they'll bring you a menu kinda place. It wasn't overly crowded but it was good we arrived when we did, because it did get crowded. It's a popular place. The decor and atmosphere is very nice and welcoming. The server brought us a menu and asked if we had ever been there before. Since we hadn't he nicely explained the menu for us and noted some of the most popular items. We wanted to try the eggrolls and pork belly, so we started with those. The eggrolls were wonderful. Fresh, hot and filled perfectly. I also loved the sauce that was served with them. The pork belly??? Well... it wasn't my favorite. It was a little hard to eat and the sauce that was served with it didn't seem to pair well according to my taste buds. For my meal I ordered the beef dish. I dont remember the name. I also added a fried egg to go on top of my rice. The dish comes with cut up seasoned beef, fried potatoes and rice. For some reason my plate came out cold. It was very strange. But because I haven't eaten at a lot of Filipino restaurants I asked if it was supposed to be cold. The server was very nice and took the plate back and heated up the meat part of the plate. When it came back out the potatoes were still cold. After that the manager brought me out a whole new plate of hot potatoes. They were good. The rest of the meal was good. And very filling. All and all... if you like Filipino food, I'd give this local business a try. I'd go back because everyone has an off day and maybe that day was theirs.

Yelp

Yelp
Came here on a recommendation from a friend and so happy I checked them out! Make sure to bring your debit or credit card; they are cashless! Interior is very cool looking, friendly staff, reasonable prices and they have lunch specials! We tried their signature dishes and fries and everything was SO good! Well seasoned, good portion size and the burger was absolutely delish! I cannot wait to try more of their dishes! If you're in the Energy Corridor, make sure to stop in!
google avatar

Yelp
A great way to introduce anyone to Filipino food, or for people who want to have a little Filipino fusion. I think the employees are always nice, and the food is mostly consistent. I always like the rice plates. If you get the chicken pupu rice place or bistek rice plate, you can't go wrong! The fried chicken bites have a balanced soy glaze, and the bistek has a great citrus flavor. Also, I don't get it often, but the lechon kawali is so good! Perfect for anyone craving that Filipino pork flavor and texture.
google avatar

Maria D.

Yelp
It's been awhile! But the food is still SERVING! Chicken pupu is my all time favorite and I will never stop recommending it! Ambiance is fun and they can be busy at times. But this place is a must try for Filipino food with a twist

Yelp
Flip 'n Patties has been a long time favorite food truck since my UH days and often saw them at the Marquis II as well. But I finally found the time to visit their brick n mortar again. Everything here surpasses expectations every time! My go to order is always their chicken pupu plate. It's literally the best. 10/10 would recommend it. Other notable mentions include their Puet burger, lechon kawali plate, and the flip n fries. No matter what you get here though, it's honestly all so good! Don't forget to get the halo halo for dessert too. Big shout out to Flip n Patties for being one of the OG's when it comes to sharing Filipino culture throughout Houston. I've been a huge fan since the UH days, and it's amazing to see how much they've grown. I'll be back again for sure!

Yelp
Place was pretty empty Saturday at 8p. Service was great and the cashier answered all my questions. Unfortunately there's a few hiccups with the food. I got Jeepney burger and the chicken pupu. The burger while it was cooked absolutely spot on medium was a hot mess. I had to eat with a knife and fork because whatever sauce was on it made the bottom of the bun completely soaked and I couldn't pick it up. The pork sausage patty was pretty tasty too. I wish I would have been able to eat it like a burger because the top bun was toasted nicely but the ketchup was a little odd. Maybe the sauces should be served on the side for a to go order. The chicken was decent nothing to go crazy about. Wasn't as crisp as I thought it would be. The fries werent good. Very soggy and not crisp (even eating one right in the car). Only had a 5 min drive from the restaurant to my place. Also the burger with the fries and chicken cost me $32 which is absolutely insane! Overall it was a decent execution but I probably won't come back again based on the price and "burger" I received.

Yelp
This place deserves 10stars Best filipino food I've had so far here in Texas. Highly recommend their Lechon Kawali and BBQ skewers. Their dessert flan with purple drizzle is the bomb thats a must try. Great service Friendly staff Awesome background music The MINI KAMAYAN is a must try which is like a sampler good for 2-3 people.
google avatar

Tanzim A.

Yelp
First of all, this is an unassuming little strip of stores in the energy corridor. Nothing about it screams "Come here", "Eat Inside". But if you're from Houston, you know that strip malls are the best places to get authentic and good food. And that is exactly what Flip 'n Patties is. I come here during work often, so I've tried a couple of things off the menu, and the JaBoi Akaushi Burger, Chicken Poo Poo Plate, and Peeshda Plate are the top three choices. The burgers are juicy and flavorful, and the little filipino twist adds a wonderful main character to the show. The buns are unique and add to the experience of the burger, and trust me, it is an amazing experience you'll want to be a part of. The chicken poo poo plate is equally interesting, and a way for me to try a filipino take on chicken while eating it with garlic rice, eggs, and pickled veggies. Lastly, my favorite thing off of the menu. The Peeshda plate is essentially seared tilapia. I've been to many places where the tilapia ends up being dry and a lackluster experience, but Flip 'n Patties sure knows what they're doing with their fish because this is equally juicy and lemony. A complete experience to dine here, and a great place to look into if you work in the Energy Corridor.
google avatar

Rina H.

Yelp
Food was excellent! They have a huge variety of filipino food they also specialize ur burger! Burger was humungous. It can be shared by two. Service was very excellent! Very accommodating and friendly. Ambiance was clean and nice. You can also let your kids play at the mini arcade area. Had some stuff toys to play on. Also, I saw some goodies too from the philippines that you can buy over there like polvoron, boy bawang, and etc.

Yelp
Their burgers are incredible, as are their fries. This has become our go-to burger spot in West Houston. They also have great deals if you sign up for their emails!

Yelp
Great food, great service. The fried rice is addictive and delicious. Great special for kids before school starts.

Yelp
Great food. We tried the mixed meat with rice and the kids got the burger. We enjoyed the food. The waiter was nice but there was a big table that came before us so we had to wait quite a bit to get water refilled and the check.

Yelp
Flip n Patties is a great Filipino fusion restaurant to try. They have many great tasting food here to try and not foreign to eat at all! I've ordered the mini Kamayan here and it consisted of so much things for only $33! The flippin fries w beef was great also (ask for less sauce on top). Looks pretty clean inside here and they made me feel very welcomed. Server told me there was "magic" hour right now and listed what was 30% off. I came on a Friday night and they were also having karaoke night which I thought was pretty cool. It's a nice vibe in the restaurant and everybody was so friendly. Halo halo is a must get !! It's a Filipino traditional dessert!

Yelp
Service was good, environment was upbeat with nice music. Food was good. Could use a little more filling in the egg rolls and burgers could have been seasoned a little more. Overall, I can check this one off my Wishlist.

Yelp
Their foods have never failed me. I've been having Flip n Patties even before they got their brick and mortar, and the foods have always been good consistently despite some small changes ofer the years. I've been ordering delivery the last year, but I came by the other day, and everything was perfect as usual. I ordered the longsilog plate (a must have) and the amboy burger with fries. It looks like their menu got bigger recently, which is awesome.

Yelp
Had an amazing plate of Chicklets plate ! The garlic rice is amazing. It has a really good flavor that complements the plate. The service was quick and very nice

Yelp
Great service everyone I go. It's hard to find Filipino restaurants that have consistent quality food..... Flip n Patties has that. I appreciate they have some 'traditional' Filipino faves, and burgers... lol. The burgers great by the way . This place is on my family's restaurant rotation of places to eat
