The Best Speakeasies and Hidden Bars in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Wander around to the back of Daniel del Prado’s Argentinian steakhouse, Porzana, and look for an unmarked door, colored an earthy green — a hint at what’s in store when you descend the staircase to reach Flora Room. For the plant lover, this is your spot: Find living greenery draped around the booths and behind the bar (a real feat considering how dimly lit the space is). Grab an upscale classic or signature cocktail to pair with salty snacks and seafood from the restaurant above. Seats are first-come, first-serve." - Natalia Mendez

UES Seafood Restaurant Flora Bar Shutters Permanently | Eater NY

"I was sorry to learn that Flora Bar, Ignacio Mattos’s upscale, critically acclaimed seafood restaurant in the Met Breuer’s basement, will not reopen after a four-year run; Mattos announced on Instagram that the new Frick Madison will not include the restaurant and he did not disclose a reason. During its run it attracted praise for specific hits like its shrimp cocktail, described as having “astonishingly fine flavor and texture,” and a tuna tartare that Pete Wells wrote “isn’t like any I’ve had before.” The restaurant was included on city best-restaurant lists by critics such as Ryan Sutton and Adam Platt, and pastry chef Natasha Pickowicz earned James Beard recognition (semifinalist in 2018 and 2019 and a finalist in 2020) in part for her work at Flora Bar." - Erika Adams

Visited downstairs bar only. Cocktails were deliciously fun made with lots of thought and skill. Great moody place for a date if even a date for 1 😉

Google
I barely have words to describe this place to be completely honest. A friend who’s a local led me to this space and it is purely magical. Typically, I like to give details about my whole experience, but this is one of those places you need to experience for yourself. I will say the music choice this night was particularly dope. If you’re debating on going, just go. You won’t regret it in the slightest and may even miss out on a once in a life time vibe. The choice is yours travler 🧿

Google
Beautiful speakeasy-style lounge. Small but mighty menu. Creative and delightful drinks! Service was curmudgeonly, hope that was a fluke. For such artful and pricy cocktails it'd be nice if our server smiled, accepted gratitude, or seemed like she wanted to work there.

Vishka C.

Google
Delivers on the speak easy vibes. Great drinks and service too! They have many unique cocktails and the decor is eclectic.

Google
Waited about 20 mins on a Saturday night which wasn’t bad at all and was totally worth it. Atmosphere is was moody and witchy which we loved. Service was excellent with bartenders giving amazing recommendations. Limited bar menu was solid - our favorite being the empanadas. All drinks were expertly crafted. Would visit again in a heartbeat.

Google
So much fun! We were a party of 3 and able to snag a cozy booth on a busy Saturday night. Shared almost the whole menu and loved everything we tried. Service was amazing, as well.

Google
Our server Miles was exceptional and very attentive. We had a great experience for my daughter Sophia’s 22nd birthday. Great service and Miles made our experience so verry special and rememberable, Thank you Miles and Flora Room. 10:10

Google
Great place with good cocktails and small bites. No reservations required. We got there a bit before 6pm with no lines, but the place quickly filled up. It could get a bit dark when first came in but the atmosphere was great. We ordered a round of drinks and small bites to eat. Drinks were delicious and beautifully crafted. We ordered the hand rolls, eggplant katsu sando, and popcorn chicken, all were great! Atmosphere was good! Space to chat with friends :)

Yelp
I highly recommend Flora Room! It's a dimly lit and beautifully decorated speakeasy tucked behind the steakhouse, Porzana. Flora Room has a unique drink menu with lots of exciting cocktails. My drink, the Rosita, was tasty and extremely refreshing. My favorite part of the experience was the green plants and warm candles spread throughout the bar!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome vibe, friendly staff, super cool concepts, come for the drinks. I got the Miami Girl #2 and it was exactly what I wanted - tasted like juice! Also got a hand roll, fries, and popcorn chicken. I would skip the hand rolls - it wasn't my favorite. The ice cream was great!! Highly recommend. Great vibes, gets busy at night. Better to arrive earlier.

Yelp
I visited Flora Room for a date night with my husband and what. a. vibe. This speakeasy style bar located in the back alley behind Porzana is so aesthetic! I've heard Flora Room can get busy but when we visited there was no wait and plenty of tables to choose from (~7:30pm). I loved that it was seat yourself. We sat at the bar and a bartender promptly welcomed us and got us water. In terms of the menu, we aren't sophisticated cocktail drinkers so I wish we would have asked the bartender what to order based on what we typically go for in a cocktail -- next time we'll ask! I ordered the Valentina and my husband ordered the Salacia. We both preferred the Salacia over the Valentina. The service was quick and the bartender was very friendly. Overall, this is a perfect spot for a romantic date night and I look forward to visiting again and trying their food!

Yelp
Looking for a downtown hideaway to go with your friends that has great drinks. Here it is! Thoughtful cocktails and the atmosphere is great to have those intimate conversations. Great service and atmosphere. The only reason this isn't 5 star is because I had one of their plum hand rolls, and it is profoundly overwhelming. I'm not sure what it was, but it was INTENSE. It's hard to explain what the flavors were - but it was like they took a bunch of taco seasoning/other stuff and just soaked it for eternity. I'm sorry to be so straightforward but I just hope it gets improved because that place could easily be a staple of the Minneapolis culture.

Yelp
Went here for a birthday celebration on a Saturday night and it was crazy busy. We got there early to secure a table which we ended up needing to put together multiple tables. Shorty after the doors open the place was filled. We ended up with about a party of 10 or so. We were served at our table but with it being so crowded it looked like it's a walk-up bar style otherwise. We ended up ordering a few rounds of drinks and food. I ordered the Miami Girl & Alsace (I think) for drinks and popcorn chicken & fries for food. The drinks were good and presented well. The food was also good but I felt like the chicken was a bit over-seasoned and salty. Overall I'm glad I got to experience the Flora Room, not sure I'd be back just because it's so busy but it's a cool place! Parking was a bit rough in the area but they do have valet which is nice.
google avatar

Tippy P.

Yelp
This is the bar behind porzana, basement bar actually. You'll have to walk to the back of the restaurant, down the steps and see the sign. Once you go through the door, there's a person who will greet you and check your ID. Once inside, it's a dark yet intimate place. Cool drinks and new food options. We ordered popcorn chicken and hand roll.
google avatar

Yelp
Flora room has absolute maculate vibes, super cozy candle lit environment. Drinks are super good but a little on the pricey side. We ordered the burger, popcorn chicken and hand roll. Hand roll and chicken were great but the burger was mediocre. Not a whole lot of flavor. Great service though!

Yelp
Flora Room is located beneath Porzana and the speakeasy entrance is in the cul-de-sac/dead-end of the block and down the stairs. The provide valet parking if you're unable to find parking on your own and there is a parking ramp across the street. Upon entrance, you're greeted by the guy who checks identification. I was celebrating my birthday and had read reviews on Yelp prior that let me know they DO NOT take reservations. I had a party of 10 and we were all seated, with top-tier seats might I add, because we all arrived at 5pm promptly, which is their opening time. Food and drinks were good. Chicken nuggets and fries were low-key delish. i've never wanted to take fries home before... and we ALL took our fries home. LOL The decor and ambiance is fabulous and lush. Some ppl are dressed in normal MN style: jeans and nice top, and others came with their A-game. You never know in MN. With that said, I don't know if they have a dresscode. My server was great and the overall customer service and experience was great. I'd definitely come again with a smaller more intimate party.

Yelp
Such a fun vibe, and so different from other nolo hotspots. I love that they do a rotating signature cocktail depending on what is fresh and time of year.

Yelp
Flora Room is the newest speakeasy although some liken it to a cocktail lounge. Its located in the North Loop beneath Porzana's Argentinian steakhouse. Side street parking can be limited however there's valet & a parking ramp across the street. Every great speakeasy is a bit incognito. You can find the valet on the right side of the building, follow the ramp and continue to the back entrance. We arrived at 5:10pm and the place was already packed! Its the perfect spot for a date, solo, or girls/ fellas night out with it's dimly lit atmosphere with a mirrored backdrop at the bar. The florescent lit plant atrium is lined with top tables that seat up to 3 people. The coveted sage-green velour booths were snug for four of us, however we were comfortable. There is also seating down the middle, between the bar and atrium which is cozy. The swanky indoor atrium feel is what makes it a vibe along with the music and service. As self-proclaimed high-low girl, Flora's menu didn't disappoint. Food is served up until 12am and they offer shareable apps and a variety of cocktails. Food/Drinks 5/5 Alsace $19 | The Tuco Tuco $16 | Popcorn chicken $13 | French fries $9 Chicken has a parmesan season/ fries we were shocked tbh. Even cold they were unmatched! Reminds me of Parlour fries! The star of the night: Not Fried Chicken Ice Cream $12 (vanilla, white chocolate, corn flakes). The chef included a Kit Kat in the middle for fun, it's flaky texture was savory while not being too sweet! Total: $80 (including the tip) The service was great the first time around with bartender being attentive and helpful with suggestions. Our second time was great then we switched booths where my friend didn't have such a great experience with the waitress when she requested a straw however she redeemed herself with shots for the table, a meeting of the minds and everything was smooth sailing moving forward. Flora is a vibe, if you're planning a trip, arrive early!

Yelp
Wow can you say details?? The ambience in here makes you feel like you transported somewhere moody and magical. From the plants to the candles to the cute sketches of each drink in the menu... just beautiful I got a NA drink the Enzo which felt like a mimosa's fancy cousin. I did feel $10 was a teeny bit steep for NA but hey it's 2024 what else is new? My husband got the old fashioned which was great and we split some delicious fries. Live this place. We did come on a Saturday at 5:30 ( opens at 5) and it was packed. Also, no street parking was available anywhere near it so we had to pay $12 for a garage...boo!

Yelp
Stopped by here after dinner next door. Cool little secret entrance that totally non descript. inside is a speakeasy with dim lighting and lots of places to sit. Very cool vibes. The server came right over once we sat down. They have a menu of cocktails and some food items too. We were just there for the drinks. The server was very helpful in deciphering the menu and explaining the drinks. We ordered a couple. The Tuco Tuco and the Martinez. The Martinez was bang on and exactly what I wanted. The Tuco Tuco wasn't quite as sweet as the person who ordered wanted. It was quite satisfying. The server was very responsive and was happy to change it out for Alsace, which turned out to suit them much better. Overall the drinks were great and the service was even better. I would definitely stop by there for a drink. Although if you had a few, the bill would be pretty high as each drink is between $14 - $20 so it can add up. But I would definitely stop by again.

Yelp
Excellent cocktails and food. My first time here since the last bar here went under. I'm glad to see the space filled by such a nice establishment. Service was great, very accommodating.

Yelp
This place has been on my bucket list since it opened, and I finally made it over with a gal pal for a Monday night cocktail! HIDDEN ENTRY: Flora Room is located beneath Porzana - you'll want to go to Porzana, walk along N 2nd Ave, and back behind it you'll take the staircase down. You'll see a light above a door next to the dumpster (yes, really) and enter this speakeasy space from there! AMBIANCE: 5/5 This is the star of the show for sure. Dark, moody, botanical, and green with live plants - the decoration and vibe is immaculate. So cozy and great for date night or evening night caps! We were the first to arrive on a Monday night, so had our pick of seats - I highly recommend a half-circle booth. They have bar seating and 2- and 4-tops in the middle. You can even enter the glass space where plants hang along the back wall and find a few high-top tables in there as well. DRINKS: 5/5 The cocktails are very playful and eclectic. I LOVE that the specialty drink menu has hand drawings of what the cocktails look like and have in them - I always want to see what they look like before ordering! I had to go with the Alsace because I'd seen awesome pics of it, but we had a hard time choosing. Alsace was amazing - and my friend enjoyed her cocktails, too! SERVICE: 3/5 This was a surprise - for such a tailored experience, the service was confusing. We had 3-4 different servers throughout our time there - and inconsistent periods of time would pass between getting checked in on so we had to flag someone down to order food and another round of drinks. It felt so strange that we didn't have an assigned server, and service was very abrupt. FOOD: 4/5 We ordered the fries and two handrolls - we loved the fries, and the handrolls were really good! They were a bit smaller than I expected, but still fun and fresh. Their food menu is pretty limited, which I don't mind, but wish they had more easy apps/shareables for folks like us just wanting to sip cocktails and snack on something. PRICE: 4/5 Oof, those prices are steep. One of the cocktails is $30, and most of them are in the $18-$24 range. Each of our small handrolls were $9. The cocktails were so cool, but it felt cost-prohibitive to have more than one during our visit. It was fun to come and experience it, but not sure I'd be back for anything other than a celebratory single cocktail.

Yelp
Awesome spot for unique drinks and vibes (+ bar snacks!) This place gets pretty busy and is first come first serve, so definitely plan a bit before coming here! The entrance is behind Porzana doors if you follow the ramp down on the right side of the building. I had a great time with our group of 3 at this place! We ordered fries and all got our own drinks. Drink prices are a bit steep ~$18 but considering location and overall vibes, I can see why. Great service and very attendant server.
google avatar

Kavitha P.

Yelp
Finally made it here on a Saturday night before our dinner at Porzana. Had high expectations and was NOT disappointed!! We were able to snag 2 seats at the bar on a sat night about 7pm and the place was buzzing. I actually really enjoyed the vibe of this place. Yes it's loud but finally the cities is catching up to European bars ,drinks were excellent although pricey, atmosphere is on point, dimly lit with green flora everywhere I loved it! We had Jake as our bartender and he was excellent and friendly! The Alsace was my favorite cocktail ,hubby ordered a Boulevardier and raved about it. The old fashioned was also good The Miami girl was just okay tasting but presented in a cute bird drink. Was nice having the picture illustrations of the drinks and the description helps to decide what to order Parking was easy on the street meter parking or valet is available for $15 Will definitely come back here for when in the area
google avatar

Esther J.

Yelp
What a beautiful speak easy. Its a nice place to bring a date but it is loud. I wish they would play quieter music so that it wouldn't feel so much like a club They had cute cups for moscow mule and others, and a very eclectic drink menu. They even had non alcoholic drinks. I got the NA drink with yuzu in it and wasnt a fan. It was very sour and..not very interesting. Didn't even taste the yuzu. I wish bars would put NA drinks in cute cups too. Ok, heres a must have if you visit here. Get the chicken sandwich. It is seriously the crispiest, juciest chicken fried sandwich I'd had in my life. The fries are good but they are overly crispy and feel like the innard potatoes were all sucked out. They grew on my though and I did end up eating it all. But get the chicken sandwich!
google avatar

MIlton S.

Yelp
"Once, during Prohibition, I was forced to live for days on nothing but food and water." ~W. C. Fields Walk down the ramp, behind the green dumpster, down the steps, through the green door, past the bouncer, and you will find Flora, a cool speakeasy. Great music! Hip vibe! Good drinks!

Lucy L.

Yelp
I got a drink something like an Ascara or something to that effect. Very delicious drink and the ambiance was very nice and moody. A little pricey but not bad for the price at all. The wait staff was pretty good for the most part but at the end we had to wait a hot minute to get a waiter to bring us the check. Overall very nice and would recommend for a nice evening

Ian N.

Yelp
Excellent cocktail bar that's both elegant and fun. Went on a Friday night and both the energy and drinks were A+. We got the Alsace which was very good and the Sachamama which was incredible. We did not get their food but it looked tasty. Shout out to Andrew Johnson who built the drink menu and also spent time listening to me blabber about his creations.
google avatar

Tiana D.

Yelp
It is so great having this space be occupied once again. I had high expectations coming into Flora Room and I'm happy to say I was not disappointed! The person at the door escorted us inside, which was lovely. The space is gorgeous. The place was pretty packed, but a friend and I were able to grab a couple of spots at the bar. Our bartender was excellent! They were super attentive, even though it seemed to be a busy night. I ordered the Alsace, which was described as similar to Marvel Bar's Olivetto - a drink I have been missing for years! And it was incredible. Perfectly balanced, delicious, and a bit nostalgic. Other highlights : - Has all of the old charm, but with a breath of new life. - Staff is a well-oiled machine. - The photos of each cocktail in the menu are unique and extremely helpful in choosing a drink.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Woah, this place is a vibe. It's dark and moody. Love all of the plants above the bar. The service was exceptional. With numerous bartenders ready to make any cocktail on the menu or any other drink we could come up with. I tried the Alsace, and it was my favorite. Would recommend coming here.
google avatar

Megan B.

Yelp
Service was excellent, the staff and ambiance are the highlights for sure! The food was really solid, although it's a selective menu. The drinks are really interesting, but I'm not sure if I would order a specialty one on return- I might instead opt for a classic or two so I can enjoy the experience and spend less on the drink.
google avatar

Julie D.

Yelp
Dark and moody, yet alive with all the greenery. The drinks were fun but seemed just a bit more expensive than a place I'd visit frequently. The service was fine, it was not the quickest but it made sense with the place being so busy. Overall I enjoyed my time, the drinks were well prepared and tasty.
google avatar

Cristina G.

Yelp
I came in from Vegas, and I looked up cocktails, and this place is one that caught my eye. I love the esthetic and drinks looked good on yelp.. and let me tell you... IT WAS BETTER THAN THE PHOTOS lol Edgar was my bartender, and he was awesome. Every drink was made delicious, and he was great to talk to vibes in the space was great. I'll definitely be coming back for these drinks.
google avatar

Kayla A.

Yelp
A beautiful venue with unique drinks, but our experience was exceptional thanks to our server Hailey J. She was so professional, recommended drinks specific to our likes, and took the time to get to know us. We will definitely be back because of this!

Kent C.

Yelp
Such a cool spot. Came in here with some work colleagues and has such a great time. Our waitress was so amazing and super friendly. Totally recommend coming here and wish i could remember what her name was but she was awesome.
google avatar

Jenna D.

Yelp
This was a great place to grab a drink after dinner upstairs at Porzana! The drinks were great-- not to mention the presentation. I also finished with an espresso martini which was top tier.
google avatar

Autumn A.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS SPACE. The ambiance, the lighting, the drinks. Everything is so cozy and classy to me in there. Usually rhe spaces are taken so it may be a little bit of a wait to get a seat. Mostly just drink here and a few appetizer like dishes.
google avatar

Charlie P.

Yelp
What a beautiful vibe! This is in the basement of Porzana, with a speakeasy style entrance in the back. It has a dark mysterious jungle feel. The drinks great. They serve as well which we did not get a chance to try. It is seat yourself and first come, first serve. So it was challenging to find 2 chairs on a weekend night.
google avatar

Shari R.

Yelp
Great drinks, food was ok, not great service! Don't go there expecting any small talk from your server. We had Maddie, not sure if I'm spelling her name correctly but she was borderline rude. She tossed our check on the table. You can't find any info online about the food menu so just to let you know. Burger, chicken sandwich, fries, popcorn chicken, and very messy sushi rolls.. along with some other veggie thing. So dark we literally couldn't see our menus.

Sherri S.

Yelp
Great food and drinks. Beautiful atmosphere. Great place to go and hang out with friends.
google avatar

Gary K.

Yelp
The ambiance, service and food are all spectacular. A heads up is that it's all first come first served so it can fill up quite quickly. Also , it is very intimate and dimly lit as well. This is going on my date night list for sure.
google avatar

Natalie C.

Yelp
Very nice place to go for cocktails. I went for date night and the atmosphere was perfect. The bartenders were all very helpful and friendly. They had a small menu to select shared plates from. I will be back
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere but the cocktails were a little too sweet for my liking. Service was quick to get our initial order but took a little long to get our second.
google avatar

Josh G.

Yelp
Dug. It. The cocktails were super unique and probably one of the best I've had in recent memory (Old fox? Sly fox?). Service was impeccable and drink options were deep and unique. It still seems ridiculously dark in there, but I get that's part of the mood. There were several people (young, I might add) that had phones out to read the menu, which seems telling.
google avatar

Sheila G.

Yelp
We met a few friends at Flora Saturday night at 5 pm right when it opened. Smart move! We had our pick of spots and chose a booth with a great view of the room. Within 45 minutes the room was packed and standing room only. We thought basis a Star Tribune review this would have more food (only a few items more like appetizers although they do have a burger) which is fine but we didn't know that. The food is good but I wouldn't go for the food it's definitely a cocktail bar. Don't waste your time on beer/wine, go for a fun drink. It's definitely DARK and we all had to use our phones to see the menu LOL and the vibe is young, hip and pretty which is also fun! We are over 60 so it was fun for us and by the time we left at 7:30 pm, we good have "sold" our table. LOL my husband offered our table to a group of young women who were standing around, chivalry isn't dead! LOL

Carolyn H.

Yelp
Blown away by the food and cocktails. Everything arrived quickly and was great quality. We especially loved the popcorn chicken! It's dark and a true speakeasy vibe. Honeydew cocktail and the Alsace were our favorite drinks.

Brandon G.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere - loved the plants and bird cage room. Dark and mysterious while also friendly and upbeat. Tasty and intriguing cocktails! Awesome new speakeasy!

Christina N.

Yelp
The cocktails at Flora Room were amazing; however, the hand rolls, priced at $9, were disappointing. They lacked authenticity and weren't enjoyable. Additionally, the first-come, first-serve seating system led to a lack of fairness, with people waiting to quickly claim tables. The absence of a hostess to manage reservations added to the frustration as I stood waiting for a table, only to have someone else swoop in and take it.

Nicholas V.

Yelp
Best cocktail bar atmosphere in Minneapolis! Has a very unique drink menu, with diagrams of how the drinks are made in the menu. All of the drinks we tried were delicious and the atmosphere is vibey and cozy. 10/10 would recommend to anyone! They don't take reservations, so make sure to come fairly early to make sure you get a table.

Chris G.

Yelp
Very nice for a date night cocktail or two - very cozy and intimate, a little noisy with the crowd, but fun people watching

Cece A.

Yelp
Fun vibe, very yummy fried chicken sandwich. Presentation of the food and drink was delightful. Bartender was quite nice. Some of the cocktails are pricey but maybe that's the price for a curated, thoughtful experience.

Joanna P.

Yelp
Intimate space. Cute but small. Definitely an upgrade to the former speakeasy style bar that was there before. Loved the drinks. Mixologists were on top of it.

Mark L.

Yelp
Great drinks and service! Megan has done it again. She is a true bar master. All staff are pros.

Kelsey W.

Yelp
great food but valet was no Point. 15 dollars for my car to be parks 29 ft and make me walk to it not to mention phone charger gone. no number to call for questions. nice....when I tried to look up number to call no number online. great place but dissatisfied with valet and stolen phone charger from phone. not happy. no number to call to express dissatisfaction
