We ate at Flyrite last night for dinner. It has been a family favorite in the past. With most of us being vegetarian, we have always enjoyed the vegetarian chicken sandwich and multiple side item options. As usual, I ordered the vegetarian chicken sandwich, Greenbelt. Also, I noted that a new item was Beyond chicken tenders on the menu which was labeled as such. There was no mention of a change to the Greenbelt Patty. I have been eating the sandwich for years and have never had an issue with it. We did not know that it used to be a Boca Patty, but now they have apparently changed it to a mycoprotein (generic Quorn) patty. I am severely allergic to this product, which is a MOLD, or VAT-GROWN FUNGUS. There is supposed to be a warning on the product as there have been many other people who have had severe allergic reactions, and even died from eating this product. I have been very careful to avoid it since discovering this allergy in 2003, and have only encountered it one other time when it was hidden in a dish until yesterday. A few hours after dinner, just like prior times, I became violently ill, up all night, vomiting, severe abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. My husband called to inquire, and the manager confirmed that the product is mycoprotein-based, and that they had not had a chance to update their information yet. This is completely egregious!!! They should be held accountable for this. As a physician, this is highly concerning that a company would change a product to a known allergen and not appropriately label it. Also, please note that the menu lists it as an all vegan sandwich, while the website for the product lists that it may contain milk, eggs, honey, or beeswax. This is NOT VEGAN! I am appalled at their apparent disregard for transparency in what they are serving with both a known allergen and non-vegan product without labeling.
