There's plenty of hidden gems around the MLK and Othello area. So many grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, you name it. My friend's parents would regularly bring us to the Othello area for dim sum on Saturday mornings, ever since I can remember. THIS restaurant, however, I haven't tried until today.
I was a bit iffy, after seeing what a few of my fellow Yelpers had to say about their food (and service), but two of my friends vouched for them. Walking in, we were immediately greeted and seated. Their dim sum, I wouldn't say is the greatest I've had, but I wasn't disappointed by it. We arrived at 3, so a few of the dishes weren't as warm as I hoped it would be (from the glass cart). Their steam cart though, fresh fresh fresh. Their shumai, chicken feet, tripe and football (ham sui gok) were on point, along with their sticky rice (which was the heartiest serving I've ever seen and I loved it). Their har gow (shrimp dumpling), I will say, I was not a fan of. The skin was very thick, maybe too much tapioca starch? And the shrimp filling seemed undercooked, and the texture threw me off completely. The "horrible" service that I read about, however, I'm a bit confused about. The women that served us were very quick, friendly, and made sure we had a full pot of tea at all times (we probably went through four). Staying in the downtown area, not even a mile away from Chinatown, I have a wide selection of dim sum dining at my fingertips. However, if I am ever in the Othello area, I will definitely be a returning customer at Foo Lam.
