14 Delightful Dim Sum Restaurants in the Seattle Area - Eater Seattle

"Good dim sum outside of the CID can be hard to find, but Foo Lam delivers for those in the New Holly/Rainier Valley area. The green beans are crisp, the shrimp har gow are a must, and the lightly toasted sesame balls are perfect." - Leonardo David Raymundo, Ryan Lee

Google
My family and I regularly go to Foo Lam for dinner. This place has authentic Cantonese style Chinese food that both me and my sister (27, 28) and our parents visit. We ordered the steamed free range chicken and for people who don’t visit authentic Chinese restaurants regularly, they serve it WITH the chicken head for good luck (Chinese superstition) which was served with a garlic sauce. The honey walnut prawns is a must! The sauce is not too citrusy and doesn’t have too much breading. We tried this eel stir fry for the first time and it was delicious! The goose is so flavorful and the fish was cooked just right so it was super velvety.

Google
This place has the best lobster over noodles in all of Seattle and maybe even better than some places in Vancouver. Lobster is pillowy and succulent never over cooked the consume over the noodles is not salty bu still has a delicate Lobster flavor. Price is reasonable and sometimes they have great live seafood specials.

I went here yesterday. Me and my boyfriend decided to eat here because I love the crispy noodles that they make. But we couldn’t finish the noodles so we decided to take it home, I put it on the fridge and decided to eat it today. I was so happy eating all of it until I stir up the noodles I couldn’t believe on what I saw! Under of the noodles that we ate has cockroach! I couldn’t believe of my own eyes on what I saw! I even bought one take home order for my family!

I wanted to give a new place a try so my family and I made a sizable order to try a variety of items(general Tao’s chicken, honey chicken wings, salt and pepper chicken, green beens. Honey walnut shrimp, steamed rice, green onion chicken, Singaporean fried rice noodles, a variety of items). The biggest surprise was the green onion chicken. 🐔 it actually had the head in there. I didn’t expect that. There was a lot of breading on the generals chicken and the honey chicken wings. I didn’t like the honey walnut shrimp at all. I was most excited for the green beans but they were also underwhelming, but good. The rice noodles were flavorful but I wasn’t sure about the meat. I realize that this review isn’t favorable, but it’s my true experience. We spent a lot of money to not at all be satisfied with our meal.

Google
We discovered this place a few months ago after searching for Chinese food by my mother in laws place. Little did we know that this Chinese restaurant that you wouldn’t noticed since it’s tucked in a corner of a strip mall ,was the best place for amazing dine in and take out Chinese food. Prices are good and the staff is always helpful and nice. Shout out to the lady we see all the time at the front and always serves us. It’s nice to be a regular now, greeted with joy and happiness with delicious food. Glad we found this place thank you

Google
Very delicious food! The restaurant was completely packed on Christmas. Like other reviews, the restaurant was not transparent about the service charge and pressured additional tipping.

Google
This is the most underrated Cantonese restaurant I've been to. I'm from the Bay Area and my friends recommended here during my staying in Seattle and the experience was wonderful. The eel claypot rice was so good that I felt shame not eating it all. Please, try the eel claypot rice when you get a chance. In Chinese it is written 黃鱔煲仔飯/黄鳝煲仔饭.

Google
This place is my absolute favorite when I’m craving legit Cantonese seafood. The fish, crab, you name it, it’s always fresh and cooked perfectly, just like luxury seafood restaurants in Guangzhou, China. I swear, every bite takes me back to family dinners. It’s also a perfect spot for big groups (they have a karaoke machine). We’ve rolled up with over 10 people, and they took care of us with huge portions, lazy Susans spinning, no stress. And if you speak Cantonese, chat up the aunties! They’re hilarious and will probably tease you while recommending the best/freshest dishes. 100% my comfort-food go-to in Seattle when I visit.

Yelp
If you want real authentic chinese food, come here for one of the best experiences of chinese cuisine. The dim sum was absolutely delicious with the bean curd roll being my favorite. The dessert dim sum choices such as the egg tart or sesame balls were amazing as well. If you want a very authentic experience with Chinese cuisine, do not hesitate to come here with your family and loved ones. You will leave here with a stronger connection with everyone afterwards!

Yelp
I just arrived at Seattle and am so glad I chose this place to eat with my family. The staff was kind and checked in on us just enough without being overbearing. The restaurant was clean and had a nice, lively atmosphere without being too loud. Prices were very fair for the quality and portions. I'd recommend this spot to anybody who likes good dim sum.

Yelp
It took 35 minutes to get my order of spicy chicken and when theu did bring it over it was not the spicy chicken No one ever came over to tell us it was gonna be a 35 minute wait Not very good service here The staff were sitting in the back table, but no one ever came over to check on us
google avatar

Yelp
I've only come here for dim sum, which does not disappoint. Service may be a bit slow sometimes. Restaurant's not too large, but we always manage to get seated every time.

Yelp
We got delivery and enjoyed it quite a bit! Looking forward to experiencing the restaurant in person. Good for simple dim sum and Chinese fare.

Yelp
The house or special fried rice is some of the Best in Seattle, but the head Server is the only one who speaks English and not too friendly. I've been there dozen of times and never encountered her before. She is rash and does not have a friendly tone, mannerism or persona! She identified herself as "the Boss"! I purchased the house fried rice to go, which listed as $13.99 on the menu, she initiall told me $17.00 when I went to pay. I asked why and she changed the price to $13.00. When she gave the receipt it's handwriting in Chinese and no tax is shown, only a price! I felt very out-f place and uncomfortable, though the set-up is very colorful with nice table cloths, etc.

Yelp
When we arrived, there was some goop on my chair and plate. The lazy Susan on the table was still dirty from the party before. The restroom was horrible as well as the service. A woman was trying to sell us food from a cart that had no temperature regulation and a man handing us waters spilled a whole cup and walked away without wiping it or apologizing. The food was not good and was expensive, it hurt our stomachs for days after.

Yelp
Food here is pretty good, also their waitress/servers has always been very nice to me. They also got some dishes that other places don't. Like the beef innards, I haven't found any other places in Seattle that sells that, and they make that really good too~ Their dim sum is also really good, but make sure you go early cause it's more fresh, they stop making them probably around 2-3pm. Should definitely give this place a try!

Marcus H.

Yelp
great good! great service! great place for a family dinner. I'll be back soon. I love the pea vines and salt and pepper tofu.
google avatar

Yelp
Salt and pepper fish and sweet and sour perk the batter outside was doughy and tough. Not light and crunchy like it should be. Disappointed.
google avatar

Dooky W.

Yelp
Had dimsum just now and had to give my review. The chicken feet smell like the product almost expired before they cooked it, really bad. I ordered Chinese doughnut with the dimsum it was overly price and it was still cold when it was brought out.

Yelp
Food was five star, service was excellent as always..my mom and I enjoyed every BITE!

Yelp
Felt hungry at 8:50pm and despite them closing at 9pm, they were able to accommodate our order and get the food out hot and ready within 10 minutes! We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken, Chinese Broccoli, Wonton Soup, and Crispy Noodles. They were all solid, except the wonton soup was below average. Would recommend pairing an extra bowl of rice to-go with the Kung Pao chicken. We hesitated to order from here because of the reviews on Yelp but honestly not bad! Does the job when you're looking for standard Chinese food.
google avatar

Sophia C.

Yelp
Service here is outstanding! They have dimsum carts. The food is delicious with great delivery

Sooji K.

Yelp
I had chowmein, and I found a piece of scrubber from the noodle. I don't know what to say. I would like to come to this restaurant once a while but not anymore.

Charleete B.

Yelp
Recently ate at this restaurant and paid with debit card and signed receipt in the amount of $66.00. The business added on and additional $5.00 without my knowledge or approval.

Yelp
Came here yesterday with the family. It was hard to review it because the food itself some were really good and some were just horrible. The neighborhood is absolutely horrendous and gross. Huge population of homeless in the back of the store. Litter is everywhere including mattresses. The footballs amazing and a must get. The shumai and hagao is gross as hell. The egg custard filling was spot on but crust was nasty and falling Apart every-time you try to put it in your mouth. Beef Tripe and daikon cake has no flavor. Fried shrimps were surprisingly delicious. Tea was good. Overall, more bad than good food.

Evelyn L.

Yelp
We ordered from here for a dinner with friends since we didn't feel like cooking for company. Food was delicious and authentic. Our company equally enjoyed the food and kept coming back for more! Portions were large and we even had leftovers the next day. We will definitely be ordering from here again.

Yelp
We are so lucky to have such a good Chinese/Dim Sum restaurant in the New Holly neighborhood. The food is consistently delicious & I love the ladies that work there. Always fast & friendly service. Their Dim Sum is solid! Lots of variety & very good taste. Good for big parties with lot of big round tables with lazy Susan's for easy service.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I ordered carry out and I got the Kung pow shrimp, which was very good. Definitely freshly made. The sauce was wonderful. It does not come with rice, of course. I also got the steam pork buns. These were not a successful dry and not enough pork. I also got the wonton soup. It was on average for the wonton soup that I tend to find here. I miss a thicker wonton soup with a better broth. This seemed a little bit watery to me, but I think that's probably just my palate. All in all I would recommend, but I would skip the steamed pork buns and the wonton soup.

Yelp
Terrible!!! Just No getting orders correct! Instead of shrimp and lobster sauce without scallions, got shrimp foo young with loads of onions, frozen center dumplings!!! Made sure to alert them with an onion allergy alert, they ignored. Entire order was wrong!!! Could have ended up in ER!!! Do not ever order from these overpriced food garbage, save yourself some money and grief!!! VERY BAD!!!

Yelp
It pains me to say this, but getting dim sum at Foo Lam is like getting the off-brand version of your favorite dim sum. But not like the premium Trader Joe's or Costco's Kirkland brands. Not like Target's very reliable Good & Gather. Maybe Walmart's passable Great Value? Actually, on second thought, maybe not. It's more of an impression of dim sum that someone had from looking at pictures of dim sum. And it's unfortunate, because I would looove a Great Value dim sum this close to where I live. We ordered 4 of our favorite items one lazy weekend morning, and here's the rundown in decreasing levels of resemblance of what we expected: - The chicken feet were honestly pretty spot on. Flavor, texture more or less as expected. Pretty average, but nothing that really shook me one way or another - The pork spare ribs I'll give a little bit of slack. Any presentation suffers from being taken off the plate in a steamer and being tossed into a a to-go box. But while the spare ribs were decently cooked, they were lacking the black bean flavor that usually makes this dish sing - I am unconvinced by the "roe" on the siu mai. The texture of the roe looks flaky and it is utterly flavorless. The texture of the pork itself was off as well, but the flavor wasn't that bad - The footballs (or salty dumplings as they might be listed elsewhere), were really something else. The exterior is fried to a hard shell and the interior is overfilled with the glutionous mochi. The entire thing is entirely off balance and I didn't even bother finishing these There are plenty of other great places to eat in this plaza that I would recommend before going to Foo Lam. Based off some of the reviews maybe it used to be better, but it was certainly an awful first impression: bad enough that I don't plan on returning anytime soon.

Yelp
I just ordered the egg foo young, very generous portions and tasted great. Didn't see any poop droppings anywhere like one review. I'd order again, not sure if other food options good but willing to try.

Amanda C.

Yelp
The waitress told me they were having a special on their lobster. I got the lobster noodle for only around $20 - what a good deal! I am definitely going back to get this again.

Yelp
Outside of Honey Court, this is my favorite Chinese food restaurant in South Seattle. My menu favorites are Chicken Chow Mein, Kung Pao Chicken, Salt & Pepper Tofu, and Honey Walnut Shrimp. The Chow Mein is a standout to me, I'm a Chow Mein fiend and Foo Lam makes some of the best. This is a hidden neighborhood gem, great for ordering takeout with a quick 15-20m turn around. Please support Foo Lam so they can continue to make delicious food.
google avatar

Alyson M.

Yelp
We had a nice dinner today, everything was solid. My favorite was the watercress soup and pineapple beef. They took extra care on the presentation. There aren't many places left that serve the traditional Chinese tapioca dessert, so I was delighted for the extra treat.

Hola M.

Yelp
Delicious dim sum. First time here. Service was great! They said they just had a new ownership change. I would definitely return and recommend

Yelp
Awful. Came on a weekend for dim sum and the food was cold and not fresh. Both the rice roll with beef and the bean curd roll tasted like it was going bad-took one bite and left the rest untouched. The beef was sour, and the noodles were hard. They had one lady pushing the only two available carts. She would push one, make her way around the three tables, then go back to grab the other cart. At no time in the hour we were there, were the carts refilled. They just sat there. On top of the bad food, they also scammed me when it came time to pay. The check out lady wrote the accurate prices down per dish on the tab, but charged me the higher price on all of them at check out. I'm making up the prices, but say some dishes cost $5, and some cost $4. The handwritten tab reflected all the accurate prices of both $5 and $4, but the total calculation reflected the higher amount, and I was charged $5 per dish for everything. It wasn't a lot, but about $2-3 more than what I should have paid. I would have mentioned something, but the woman didn't speak English. No big deal. I took out the difference in the tip, am writing this review, and will never go back to that dump. Sorry, if you purposely change prices, you're trash. Everyone working, minus the lady that checked us out, was nice. The restaurant is in a small shopping center where parking is tight. The restaurant is dated.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Poor quality food - mustard greens without the leaves, just stems. Salt and Pepper tofu, overly fried, no flavour, old oil? Surly wait staff. Sorry....
google avatar

Vannie S.

Yelp
Foo Lam use to be really reliable. I always got their beef congee when I was feeling under the weather. But this pass weekend really made me not ever want to come back. Over the weekend I was feeling under the weather and ordered congee and one Chinese donut. My mom went to get the food and also ordered a dim sum order of sticky rice. When the food came out my mom checked everything and the Chinese donut was wrapped in rice paper and the sticky rice was not the dim style but the fried version. I understand there are different versions of Chinese donuts and sticky rice. But it's really up to the restaurant to make sure that they got their order right and not assume. My mom also checked the bag and there were no utensils. After this experience I will not be coming back.

Yelp
Great menu and amazing service must try this place. I give it 10 stars for the food not being salty
google avatar

Karin H.

Yelp
Decided to try this place out for takeout after reading some great google review. I made a mistake unfortunately. Ordered chow mein. So blant taste and less ingredient than what picture showed. Few seafood and 95% noodleI ... I didn't pay $15 for tasteless noodle! Won't go back again and won't recommend
google avatar

Enzo V.

Yelp
The food is good with ok service. Like most Asian dim sum restaurants in Seattle they could be a little slow. The price is extremely affordable and there isn't a wait like the overly congested venues in Chinatown. Order the salted egg buns!

Yelp
There's plenty of hidden gems around the MLK and Othello area. So many grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, you name it. My friend's parents would regularly bring us to the Othello area for dim sum on Saturday mornings, ever since I can remember. THIS restaurant, however, I haven't tried until today. I was a bit iffy, after seeing what a few of my fellow Yelpers had to say about their food (and service), but two of my friends vouched for them. Walking in, we were immediately greeted and seated. Their dim sum, I wouldn't say is the greatest I've had, but I wasn't disappointed by it. We arrived at 3, so a few of the dishes weren't as warm as I hoped it would be (from the glass cart). Their steam cart though, fresh fresh fresh. Their shumai, chicken feet, tripe and football (ham sui gok) were on point, along with their sticky rice (which was the heartiest serving I've ever seen and I loved it). Their har gow (shrimp dumpling), I will say, I was not a fan of. The skin was very thick, maybe too much tapioca starch? And the shrimp filling seemed undercooked, and the texture threw me off completely. The "horrible" service that I read about, however, I'm a bit confused about. The women that served us were very quick, friendly, and made sure we had a full pot of tea at all times (we probably went through four). Staying in the downtown area, not even a mile away from Chinatown, I have a wide selection of dim sum dining at my fingertips. However, if I am ever in the Othello area, I will definitely be a returning customer at Foo Lam.

Yelp
First visit was dine in and second was carry out. The restaurant was clean. The service was kind and efficient. Our carry-out was well packed and delicious. We did ask for spice level 3 but didn't get it. The food did still have flavor. They are certainly on rotation for us. Very nice people.

Yelp
When the food gets eaten so fast and no pictures can be taken in time, you know you're in for a treat for some yummylicious dishes :) Been here multiple times and here's my overdue review of this solid Chinese/Vietnamese place. DIM SUM NOTES: --Seriously, this place = fantastic for dim sum and it proves to be a great alternative to Joy Palace, especially on the busy weekends --Cart Style: Like most places, the dim sum plates comes around in the carts --Service: Over time, I have noticed the staff stepping up their game in giving good service. So don't let the stern faces of the aunties scare you off :) Plus, if you go during dim sum hours, do expect slower service. My tip for getting someone's attention: Wave/stand up and make yourself obvious --Food Quality & Quantity = Solid. Seriously. Food here is awesome. When in doubt, order: Fried Shrimp Balls (takes like 20min to cook), Chicken Feet, Baked BBQ Buns, Tripe...aiiii. Basically anything that looks good will taste good. In addition, you don't really need the soy sauce or chili since most of the dishes are perfectly seasoned. OTHER FOOD NOTES: --If you're not a fan of dim sum, Foo Lam does deliver some pretty tasty Chinese/Vietnamese dishes. --My favorites here: Salty Fish Fried Rice, Honey Garlic Spareribs, a veggie dish, #8 soup (can run out/be limited for the day), honey walnut prawns, and etc --For large groups, go for the banquet style aka the usual 7-10 course meal. There are three options you can choose from, with varying prices. In my humble opinion, this is the best deal you can do with a group of 8-12 and everyone can be full afterwards Ahh. Can't wait to swing by here again for dim summmmmmm. :D
google avatar

Trisha F.

Yelp
What a joke! Just got delivery and my bag is DRIPPING WITH A PUDDLE OF LIQUID. Are you kidding me?! No napkins, no utensils. They obviously do not want any business or repeat customers.
google avatar

Jenny Y.

Yelp
Was not impressed. Arrived at 9:30am and we were their first customers. Ordered 4 things and booked it. The four items $18.27 (ha gow, sui mai, phoenix claws, and another dim sum dish-forgot what it's called-), were not very good. Service was mediocre. My cup had a small piece of hair and plates felt sticky. Tea was charged $0.50 per person. Visa accepted. This place is located in a shopping complex, a little bit hidden. Foo Lam seems to attract the old timers during dim sum hours. Will not be back.

Ran N.

Yelp
The food is good but the employee attitude is rude, they keep tell me get one of the food in cart and when I denied they keep murmured something in Cantonese or Mandarin to our tables and even point at our table and say something, when I finally pick one of the desert in the cart the desert aka the egg cake is taste bad, it like egg jelly with cake, I overall gave this restaurant an 7/10
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
We had driven by a couple of times and we were always curious. After binging Gilmore girls for the millionth time, the craving for chinese food was strong! Only open for take out and delivery. It was easy to order online and then arrive to phone and pick up the food. Only chinese broccoli and beef pictures because the rest was devoured! Delicious, warm, and fresh. Definitely will return back.

Grant N.

Yelp
My mom called me around 5pm when I was at the gym doing cable row to come down to this restaurant. Food was great. My favorites was the rice and the fish. Couldn't get the names of each dish b/c they ordered before I got there. Service is amazing! Would come back again.

Marie H.

Yelp
Had another outstanding family dinner tonight. Everything was tasty and exceeded expectations.

Maria Allora E.

Yelp
Lisa was a great server! Just ordered the lobster and noodles for about $20 from their specials. Salt and pepper pork was really good too.
google avatar

Hai T.

Yelp
The food was good but, the service was okay for the price that we paid for. We booked this venue to celebrate our daughters first birthday and had booked approximately eight tables for our party, which is expensive. For the price we were expecting the service to match. Our guest complain that some of the food items on the menu were not serve for them while other tables received theirs. Water had to be ask to be refilled. There was no air conditioning and the tables were packed and jammed together. I wish I could give out more stars but, I don't think I will book another event here. The reason why I give it two stars instead of one is because I actually enjoy the food. If only the service can make up for the lack of air conditioning and space than I would of still give this place 5 stars.
google avatar

Clint W.

Yelp
Hmm, tried a new place and regretted it. Not good. It's in s big strip mall with crazy parking. Walking in, it's a bit dingy and worn out looking. Expectations were lowered as soon as we walked in. The dim sum was flat and not very tasty. The chow fun was the only dish that was passable. We even left a dish half eaten. Not worthy of taking home. This is a pass for me.
google avatar

Lillian S.

Yelp
In the past my family have been coming here for the food and the friendly faces. This past weekend we received the worst customer service we have ever experienced. We arrived for dim sum around 12:30 they were pretty busy. It first started when they gave away my table. So they lady had asked me to follow her to a table and then paused and asked me to wait while another family took the table. And she said it's ok your entire party is not here yet--but the other party was also incomplete. We said we had 9 people and there were only 8 chairs so we had to hunt down another chair ourselves. We had ordered one round of dim sum and then they ran out of food (at 12:30). We also ordered a beef chow fun for my brother. We were sipping on water for 45 minutes. Until we were fed up and left and paid our bill. My grandma tried waive the waitresses down many times to ask about the status about the chow fun and they ignored her (even when they were right in front of her) we tried to get refills on water and no attention. The owner came by and said no problem-- but how do you say there is no problem when no one got full and there was no food. We ended up canceling the chow fun because it never came. I understand when the kitchen staff are low on hands but you do not ignore your customers that many times. We are not coming back.

Yelp
Meh. I wish it was better. I love dim sum and am always looking for places in the Seattle area but for some reason none of it is ever good. Yes, I've been spoiled to have eaten dim sum in San Francisco when I lived there and various times in Vancouver, but not sure why I can't find anything that's even close here in Seattle. It's not like it's lacking Chinese people here and there's quite a bit of dim sum restaurants here. Anyways, Foo Lam is tucked away in a corner of a very busy strip mall. Parking is horrific and you almost have to get lucky. The restaurant itself looks okay I guess. Like they tried to be extravagant but it's not really. Service is bleh. I spent most of the time listening to maybe the "boss"? yelling at one of the cart pushers and honestly it's BS cause she was yelling at her for the crap service she herself was giving in front of customers. Kind of sad that she treat her employee that way and I wish these types of people were not in positions of power. Food is bleh. It does the job to satisfy the hunger but it's nothing to rave about. I did like the sticky leaf chicken rice though. Probably the best thing I had here. Probably won't go back and it's hard to recommend as there's so many other options with the same standard of food.

Truc N.

Yelp
Rodent droppings were on our take out bag. We called the restaurant and they insisted the droppings were tea leaves. We brought everything back so they could see with their own eyes and they still denied it. The lady proceeded to pick up the "tea leaf" and the poop smeared all over her fingers. Instant justice.
