The 17 Best Destinations for Food and Drink in Cow Hollow

"Step inside For the Record for a trip back in time to a feel-good era rife with wood paneling and retro wallpaper. The cocktail menu “takes inspiration from a different song from the late ’60s through the mid-’80s” making for playful cocktails with surprising flavors, such as a citrus vodka drink incorporating cantaloupe and sparkling lemonade. Order from the Cheekies menu if you’re looking for a composed, but smaller, cocktail, and if you’re feeling peckish, tack on an order of the deviled eggs." - Paolo Bicchieri

The 14 Best Places to Eat and Drink in the Marina

"In our modern world, sometimes what one needs is a blast from the past — and For the Record has that in spades. The retro- and 70s-themed bar features fun (and funky) decor alongside a menu of solid cocktails that is updated often with new drinks. If you’re in more of a sampling mood, there are Cheekies, the bar’s name for mini cocktail-esque shots that’ll taste much better than those shots you did in college." - Dianne de Guzman, Eater Staff

Where Can I Find Mini Cocktails in San Francisco and the East Bay? - Eater SF

"In San Francisco, one spot to check out is For the Record in the Marina. This newish bar offers drinks called Cheekies, which are named this way because they are "just enough to fill your cheek," bartender Janice Bailon explained at the bar’s opening. They have three options, the Bad Girl, Low Rider, and Afternoon Delight, all of which lean more towards stylish 50/50s than full-on mini cocktails — but are also much classier than a traditional shot." - Dianne de Guzman

Most Anticipated Spring Restaurant and Bar Openings in the San Francisco Bay Area - Eater SF

"Barry John Walsh will open his first bar in the Marina this spring. Called For the Record and inspired by the 1970s, the throwback bar will offer riffs on disco drinks like the Pink Squirrel and Mudslide, plus an 'Americana' menu from consulting chef Frank Hua of hit Hawaiian pop-up Unco Frank’s. The team plans to turn the space into a groovy hideaway with bold colors, eye-catching prints, lava lamps, and record players." - Lauren Saria

I recently had the pleasure of visiting For the Record, and their Thursday Vinyl Nights are an absolute must! The vinyl selections are a perfect mix of funk and disco, setting a groovy, upbeat vibe that keeps the energy just right. The cocktails are expertly crafted and complement the rhythm of the night perfectly.

Brian Lewis

Google
Awesome Marina/Union area cocktail bar. Thursday's is vinyl night with a good space for dancing. Retro almost speakeasy vibe. Old school record theme. 10 bar stools, 9 takes for small groups. Does all of the classic cocktails but has a menu with all original cocktails. Try the Superfly and the Intimate Friends!

Spoiler alert: We love For the Record. If you're reading this, just go there and try it! We tried For the Record during our first romp of the Marina. As somewhat San Francisco newbies, we felt a bit out of place in the Marina amongst all the well-dressed and nicely groomed denizens, while we're more used to the ragtag, riffraff of our native Richmond. Nonetheless, we immediately felt at home walking into the swanky vibes of For the Record. On our first visit we tried the Blackberry Beret and Lovely Day, as well as the Brandy You're a Fine Girl and Intimate Friends. We loved all of the drinks but particularly loved the Intimate Friends, which had a nice herbaceous flavor with a nice punch from the absinthe rinse. On our second time back, we tried the play on the Pina Colada (forgetting the name), and got another round of the Intimate Friends. We didn't realize the cocktail menu changes seasonally, so we're looking forward to checking out the fall cocktails!

Google
A little gem. Skilled and friendly people behind the bar, very good cocktails, cozy athmosphere, decent prices. Victoria is a star and gracefully obliged to many off menu cocktail requests from a tipsy visitor! Go early if you want to grab a table as it gets packed.

Google
I like this bar. Came here because recommend by another bar I have to wait to get in. Atmosphere is very chill. Was able to get a table quick. Drinks r good but not mind blowing. Chicken nuggets seem fresh and fries are good. I’m very impressed tho I wasn’t expecting much

Google
Stumbled into this incredible little cocktail spot with thoughtful cocktails based on songs. The food menu looked great and had blistered peppers, salt and vinegar popcorn, deviled eggs, Cuban grilled cheese, and onion dip. There was a balanced beer and wine list for those who don’t want cocktails.

Brookey Villanueva

Google
Love this spot!!! I can't recommend it enough, definitely my new favorite bar. Must get one of the cocktails, my personal favorites were the California Soul (pic) and Lovely Day. Also can't go wrong with one of the Cheekies. Great vibes all around - perfect spot to hang out with friends or have a date night. The Marina has been waiting for a place like this!

Google
Mixed seating with different spots to congregate in the small space. Really friendly bartenders. Tasty drinks. Holiday drinks were fun but not overdone

Yelp
I've always had a good night when I've stopped by For The Record. They not only have a great selection of cocktails already, but if you ask the bartenders for their recommendations or something off menu, they will put in the time to make you something great. I've also had some of the food and the Mozzarella Sticks and Fries are perfect when paired with a solid drink. They also do have some great music no matter the night so what're you waiting for!?
google avatar

Tommy W.

Yelp
This is a vinyl themed bar but it's not obnoxious about it. It's a low ceiling chamber so if that is tough for you, don't come here. There's the main room with the bar, seating and a DJ booth, there's also some space back by the washrooms. The drinks felt respectable but not inspired. The bartenders were affable and willing to get to know the drinkers. Would I come back? Only uf I was in the area or I was the DJ.

Yelp
Cute bar, great music, friendly bartender, on the quiet street of Greenwich. I came here for a cocktail date recently & it's the perfect place as it has soft lighting, comfortable seating & good drinks. I love the '70s style font on the bar menu & wall art. So groovy! Cocktail names are a play on lyrics or song names from the '70s & '80s. I generally prefer vodka or rum based drinks & had a Reminiscing cocktail. It was perfectly balanced between sweetness & fruitiness. My date opted for dirty martinis.
google avatar

Michelle Z.

Yelp
Cool vibes inside! They had a band playing live music and they were great. The bartender was very friendly and cocktails are $15 which is pretty reasonable for SF. I got the strawberry fields forever drink which was actually pretty strong compared to my friends' drinks that I tried. I would recommend the paradise drink or the reminiscing one!
google avatar

Vivian L.

Yelp
Came here for the first time and got the "Reminiscing" and "The Heat Is On" drink. There is bar seating and some seatings along the wall. The service was quick and the drinks were pretty good. There was 2 restrooms and they were very clean. Water was self serve. Street parking.

Yelp
A cute and cozy bar with a friendly bartender. I got the Escape, which is made with a rum blend, pineapple, whipped coconut clarified pina colada. The clarification improved the texture, enhanced the flavors, gave it a crystal clear look, and had a smoother and softer taste!
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
Really cute cocktail bar in the marina. The drinks are on the pricier side but not crazy for the area and really delicious! They play good music and the bartenders are quick. It's also not as crazy as a typical marina bar. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
We had time to stop in for one cocktail before dinner, and got there right as they opened. The bartender was extremely nice, walking us through the menu and then whipping up the drinks quickly. We got 4 drinks between us and loved them all. The vibe was really cool, appreciate the 70s vinyl take - fun without being kitchy. Definitely worth a stop by!
google avatar

Yelp
Very cute place in the Marina! It's not very big inside so if you wanna have somewhere to sit/table you'll wanna get there early around 7:30-8. It got pretty packed which made me so happy for them! We didn't order any food but there were small bites on the menu!
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
This bar was awesome. Great 70s hits playing with a well thought out bar menu. Bartender treated us very well. I loved the special martini they were serving. Great place for the Marina.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in around 8pm on a Saturday and was still able to grab a table for 4. Really cool vibe to the bar playing some really fun music but you might wanna snag a table in the back room if your group wants to chat. The bartender was so nice and got our drinks quickly. The menu looks like it changes. I had a version of a Marshmallow old fashion and our friend a mezcal cocktail with spirulina that gave it a cool blue color. Both cocktails were awesome and would definitely come back!

Yelp
Found this amazing bar on Yelp! Love the decor and the really relaxing vibe in this place. The bartenders were really nice and attentive and they were short staffed on a Friday night! They gave us some great suggestions and between our party I think we tried the whole cocktail selection. Superfly had to be my fave! But reminiscing and lovely day were close seconds. What can I say? It was a GOOD night! There's also a back room by the bathrooms with some cool lava lamps and small tables to hang out in if the front room is too crowded, we almost missed it completely!
google avatar

Qinnan L.

Yelp
Really fun, welcoming vibe with good drinks. We came around 9pm on a Friday and grabbed the last two seats at the bar. After about 15 minutes, a line had started to form outside, so do be prepared to wait during peak times. I appreciated the bartender took time to chat with us and check in even though the place was very busy

Yelp
My friend found this spot and the drinks were SO good. It was pretty dim on the inside and parking in the area is mainly meters unless you find street parking (which is rare). The decor is indeed retro and the music was on the louder side. Service was pretty quick as it was empty aside from 2 other parties when we arrived. You have an option to start a tab or not when placing your orders. Seating is free. My friend ordered the man-eater and I ordered a ride like the wind. Both drinks were pretty good in their own right. Hers was refreshing and mine had some savoriness to it. Couldn't taste much corn flavor though. I'd definitely stop by again in the future to try some of their other cocktails!

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing! It offers a wonderfully intimate and cozy atmosphere, perfect for a great night out. We popped in here for a night cap after a birthday dinner in the Marina district. We turned up on Tuesday! They have an incredible selection of spirits available, catering to all tastes. Additionally, the bartender's outstanding personality added a special touch to the overall experience. The chic and modern interior adds a touch of sophistication and style that perfectly complements the overall ambiance. Truly a spot worth visiting!

Yelp
10/10 this place is perfect! The bartender was super friendly and welcoming. The drinks were well mixed and delicious. The decor was super fun and super cute. And the fries and sauce were wonderful. I have nothing bad to say about this place! I really wish I lived in San Fran so I could go all the time and it be a regular spot.

Yelp
Delicious drinks and a great vibe-- the bartenders are always super friendly and overall perfect spot to grab a cocktail with the girls!

Yelp
Had some quirky drinks at this bar - love that they do a music theme and change it up every so often. It had a neighborhood feel - a mix of different groups of people all having fun and good convos. The bartender was friendly and our drinks/food came out fairly quickly. My husband ordered a....unique drink which included crawfish boil bitters (?!) . He wasn't a huge fan of it - it sort of tasted a little fishy as one might expect. Certainly unique though! I ordered the 'magic' which was pretty enjoyable and a nice mix of sweet, but not overly sugary. The ice cubes were purple and I believe they contained one of the ingredients (not sure which) but more flavor came out as they melted. We also were a little peckish and ordered the side of fries - it was a VERY generous portion of garlicky fries and we ate every single one. So good - nice crinkle cut ones. None of those flimsy shoestrings! Had a nice bit of time here before it was onto dinner. I would recommend it for the music or cocktail fan.

Yelp
Cozy, intimate cocktail bar in the Marina. The bartenders are amazing, music isn't too loud, and it's a great place for a date or even a small friend group meetup. Vintage decor was the cherry on top! One of my fav cocktails bars I've ever been to.
google avatar

Lexi Y.

Yelp
Nice little bar off fillmore very intimate with good cocktails. Hard to get a drink when it's busy but that's pretty standard for the area

Yelp
I have found the coolest bar in the Marina! For The Record will take you on a journey to one of San Francisco's finest eras, where free love and rock 'n' roll was more than just a phase. They just debuted the fourth volume of their imaginative cocktail menu called "Road Trippin," and we got to try a handful of them! My favorite cocktail on the new menu was the 'Wayward Son'! It had all the makings of an old-fashioned but was ten times better! What set it apart was the medley of bitters they use, along with what can only be described as the taste of toasted marshmallow. They sprayed (you read that right) scotch on top, which gave it a subtle smokiness. If you can imagine eating a s'more by a campfire, that's exactly what it felt like drinking this cocktail. The cocktail was perfect. 'Intimate Friends' was a close second! It is a well-balanced drink with apple brandy, lychee, lime, and a spray of absinthe on top! It was tart and herbaceous. It was so fun to see them give it a little spritz at the end. I've never seen it done that way before. Also delicious were the 'Escape' and 'Does Your Mother Know'. The 'Escape' was one of the best piña coladas I've had in San Francisco, with whipped coconut and pineapple on top. It complemented the rum blend, making you want more. 'Does Your Mother Know' was probably the most beautiful of the four drinks we tasted. It is extremely drinkable and goes down a little too smoothly! In the kind of way that makes you want to order more and more. As soon as you walk into the bar, you feel like you've been transported to a scene from That '70s Show. They put so much detail into the decor of the space, from the wallpaper to the artwork, to even the menu itself, which is the size of a 45 rpm record sleeve. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and inviting. They have live DJs spinning every Thursday night to set the vibes. Check it out with friends or swing by for happy hour to connect with locals who are there to try the new cocktails!

Yelp
Checked this out on a Saturday night and was pretty busy upon arriving and was super packed after having 1 drink. We tried the superfly and lovely day cocktails. Both were very sweet and not too great. We got 2 superfly cocktails and they looked very different in color. Place was cute and had a good vibe but drinks weren't good enough to come back.
google avatar

Sierra R.

Yelp
Fun bar! It gets packed on the weekends so don't expect to be sitting here. If you like a chill bar vibe this is a great place to go if you happen to be in the marina
google avatar

Brooke P.

Yelp
cute & cozy little spot for a late night weekday martini. this place takes you back in time & the bartender is great! love the tunes & atmosphere.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I got the breakfast something cocktail and the ingredients said Cinnamon Toast Crunch but it tasted like a normal old fashioned. My friend got the lavender drink. Both our drinks seemed pretty strong at first but tasted better once the ice melted Service was bad.. the bar was almost empty but bartender took like 15m just to take our order. She kept talking about herself while people were waiting to get drink orders taken. Check took a while as well
google avatar

Sandra A.

Yelp
Vibey spot slightly off the beaten path in the Marina. Dim lighting, bar seating plus high top tables and a few larger booths. Could be a good date spot or a place to catch up with a handful of friends. Tried a couple cocktails and thought they were good. A nice spot to try but probably won't be going out of my way to come back.
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
The atmosphere was amazing. Super cool menu and fun vibes. We had 3 different cocktails which were all just okay. Not quite on par with other craft cocktail bars in SF. The bartender was helpful and funny and we had a great time there - I just wish the cocktails were a little more memorable. I will definitely be back to give them another chance, there is amazing potential.
google avatar

Daniel A.

Yelp
Lovely and super cute little bar! The bartenders were lovely! Super friendly and welcoming! Drink prices are a bit pricy but it's the marina so expected. They do serve some small bite food. We only ordered some fries but they were super good! We will be back!
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Enjoyed a couple of cocktails and a pour of Van Winkle 12 year at For the Record before a visit to Atelier Crenn down the street. Really like the space, crowded, but not uncomfortable. No servers, so you have to order from the bar. Our bartender was super friendly and she prepared the cocktails quickly so it wasn't awkward standing over the patrons at the bar while waiting. We aren't from town, but if we were visiting again, and dining nearby, we wouldn't hesitate to visit For the Record again.
google avatar

Beatrice P.

Yelp
For the record, this place is insanely cool. Some might say it's exactly what the Marina bar scene needs. Say goodbye to riding mechanical bulls and sipping shitty whiskey sours as you step into a groovy, retro wonderland with fun music, craft cocktails, and a ~refined~ crowd. Drunk B took some random pictures. Enjoy.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Overall, come here for a unique cocktail list and atmosphere. Drinks & service: I stupidly came here on a Saturday night. It was packed as expected. Ordered the Reminiscing which was refreshing and not overly sweet. Bar tending staff works very hard with one note.. I ordered 2 drinks and the total came to $28.70. I gave the guy $40. He handed me back $2. I explained how I gave him $40 and he said, 'yea, I expected $10 as the tip.' I'm sorry, WHAT? 35%? Umm no. Pay attention when paying cash.

Yelp
my partner's wallet got stolen out of her purse here :( very yummy drinks though! be cautious

Yelp
Great ambiance and drinks were exquisite. Service was impeccable and I definitely will be coming back!

Yelp
Love the 90s retro vibe going on at this cool new bar. I like that this place is good for both big groups and intimate dates (as they have some cozy spots towards the back). At the time I visited which was when it was a week or two old, I felt like the cocktails were nothing to write home about, but I might just feel differently the next time I visit, we'll see :)
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
Great ambiance and delicious drinks. We really loved the holiday special drink the u-be coco. The bartender was also wonderful and super helpful for our big group.
google avatar

Yelp
Vibes and aesthetics were on point but the drinks weren't great. We ordered 5 different drinks and none of us particularly enjoyed any of them.
google avatar

Adriana R.

Yelp
For the record - this place is stuck in the 60s-80s and not in a good way. I came with a group of friends (of color) and we were treated terribly by the owner and waitress on a Saturday evening. We were sitting in the back sipping cocktails and I was sleepy from the day so I rested my head on my boyfriend's shoulder. The waitress came up and snapped at me that I couldn't do that. Then the owner came over, introduced himself as the owner and yelled at us to leave. While I know I shouldn't be sleepy at a bar, my friends weren't there to cause harm & the way the owner yelled at them was totally left field. We looked around after that and felt extremely out of place. My friend felt so unwelcome, she decided to go home right after. I really hope they can see that as a new bar in an area that already gets a bad rep for not being inclusive, these actions mean more than they may think. This review really is to alarm anyone who already dislikes the Marina, a couple of disco balls and cute decor do not automatically make it a safe space. I am writing this with the hopes that no one else gets treated like we did that night.
google avatar

Boo K.

Yelp
Amazing spot. But don't go here if you're going to be annoying and rude. Some people just stand in the way and have no manners and they almost spill your drink. #toxic. The music is a vibe. GROSS VIBES. no one needs that. The lighting is cool and I haven't no experienced a line for the bathroom yet. The bar tenders are rad and so talented. 0/10. don't do it. Stay at somewhere else Ok circle forward five minutes 10:09pm. ---- un requested. They are playing abba. Specifically dancing queen. Could be more unique. But I'll take any abba I can get.

Yelp
You can get a great cocktail in this city at many different bars. What makes this bar amazing is Janice. Bouncer, greeter, front of house, back of house, bartender, music teacher, and more... she is literally a one woman show who makes a great experience for everyone who walks through the door.

Yelp
A good friend recommended this place, and we loved the vibe and expert bartender helping us make great choices.

Yelp
Great cocktail bar and with a lovely ambience and top class service. Had a fun Friday night out with friends.

Missy J.

Yelp
The service was tremendous, particularly Abraham who was very friendly and creative in his ability to whip up a drink based on discussed favorite flavors. Great vibe. Tasty snacks. Would definitely recommend.

Dan S.

Yelp
we met friends after work to celebrate my wife's birthday in this hip little joint - I only wish I had known about it earlier! 10 out of 10... the vibe & feeling is spot on. Amazing bartenders, beautiful drinks, smells great, and looks even better - plus tasty bar snacks - what more could you want?

Yelp
It's just so well done. Not over the top. Really feels like it used to feel back in the day. Retro perfected. Will be returning.

Yelp
Amazing cocktail bar in the heart of all the action! Ambiance is 10/10 and the staff are so talented and accommodating. Great spot to grab drinks before or after dinner...can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Love this spot!!! I can't recommend it enough, definitely my new favorite bar. Must get one of the cocktails, my personal favorites were the California Soul (pic) & Lovely Day. Also can't go wrong with one of the Cheekies. Great vibes all around - perfect spot to hang out with friends or have a date night. The Marina has been waiting for a place like this!

Yelp
Groovy lil cocktail bar in the Marina area just a ways off from all the weekend night action of Balboa Cafe, Rockwell, etc. The night we went it was a bit crowded and the space is certainly limited, but the ambiance fit the name very well and the cocktails were great! The staff here do a wonderful job. Thoroughly enjoyed my drink that had ube and coffee (?) in it, which was something I was not expecting. Check the menu for it next time you stop in!

Anthony G.

Yelp
Somewhat hidden gem with a great drink menu, friendly bartenders and a mellow neighborhood vibe midweek.
