Family recipes from the '90s are used at this Taiwanese dumpling house with a casual atmosphere.
"Formosa is a new Taiwanese restaurant run by the family behind the popular dumpling shop Sanmiwago in Manhattan’s Chinatown. There are seven kinds of dumplings on the menu: seafood, celery, chicken, and, the house specialty, yellow chive. The menu has other Taiwanese staples, too, including lu rou fan and scallion noodles." - Luke Fortney, Eater Staff
"Meet Formosa, Bushwick’s dumpling destination. This Taiwanese corner spot on Evergreen Ave. sells eight dumplings for $12 and each one clocks in at a very solid two bites. If it’s your first time, try the steamed signature pork and chive doused in crunchy chili oil, but we also like the dumplings with peppery white fish (fried, always). Round out your order with lu rou fan with tender braised pork and the popcorn chicken served with pieces that are exactly as small as popcorn and coated in a sweet-and-salty dust. You could always order takeout through Formosa's antique phone perched on a vintage stool, but you're better off staying a while. The space feels like it was designed by a friend who's good at stooping: mismatched wooden chairs and tables look like they all belong together. On any given evening, solo diners line the counter, headphones on, having some alone time with a plate full of dumplings. Be like them or come for a casual weeknight dinner with friends and order a couple of beers and most of the menu. It's the kind of place where you'll want to swipe the last dumpling when everyone else in your group is too polite to take it. " - Willa Moore
"There may come a time when you need a dumpling. It may be an inopportune time, like when you live in Bushwick, have spent all Saturday in bed, and cannot imagine getting on a train to go to Sanmiwago. But now you have Formosa, a Taiwanese dumpling destination on Evergreen Ave., which looks like your friend’s living room (your friend who’s really good at rehoming stooped furniture), and which sells a plate of eight pork dumplings doused in crunchy chili oil for $12. They also have popcorn chicken and lu rou fan with tender braised pork, and will be adding beer and wine. Peel yourself out of bed, don your coziest sweatsuit and head over for a satisfying, low-key hang." - Will Hartman, Willa Moore, Neha Talreja, Sonal Shah, Tiffany Yannetta
"Formosa Dumplings, from one of the founders of Sanmiwago, is a Taiwanese dumpling shop in Bushwick, with neighborhood-friendly dishes like scallion noodles and lu rou fan, besides their yellow chive-filled pork dumplings. You can sit at the bar or lounge on a couch, and they’ll eventually have beer and wine—stop by on a night out on Jefferson Street. We Checked out Formosa Dumplings, and added it to the Brooklyn Hit List" - Will Hartman, Willa Moore
"Formosa, a new Taiwanese dumpling shop, is now open. It comes from Chuya Lee and her father, Hsin Chang Lee, who launched a dumpling chain with locations in China and Taiwan and is one of several founders of Sanmiwago, a dumpling spot with several locations in Manhattan." - Emma Orlow
