Thai Rolled Ice Cream Shop Frozen Rolls Creamery Opens on North Lamar - Eater Austin

"New Thai rolled ice cream shop Frozen Rolls Creamery is opening on 704 North Lamar Boulevard starting on Friday, January 11. Since the downtown spot opening with limited hours, all toppings and drizzles are free and unlimited for the time being. The ice creams are made right on the spot, where staffers will pour the liquid onto the anti-griddle, plus toppings and other ingredients. After it cools, the resulting ice cream is scraped into rolls. There’s a major emphasis on vegan options and natural colorings like spirulina, coconut ash, and matcha. Frozen Roll’s opening menu features flavors like vanilla, ube, strawberries, and black sesame. Combinations include s’mores, the Monkey Business (banana and Nutella), and Coconut Volcanic Ash (coconut ash and toasted coconut flakes). As for drizzles and toppings, there’s condensed milk, cookies, cereals, candies, and nuts." - Nadia Chaudhury

New Thai Rolled Ice Cream Shop Lands on North Lamar - Eater Austin

"Thai rolled ice cream is coming to 704 North Lamar Boulevard courtesy of Frozen Rolls Creamery. The downtown ice cream shop is set to open sometime later this summer, ideally sometime in August. For Thai rolled ice cream, the frozen sweet is made right on the spot. The liquid is poured onto the anti-griddle, along with mixings and other flavors, and then cooled and hardened into thin layers which are scraped into cylindrical rolls. Frozen Rolls owners Warren and Kathy didn’t disclose much information about Frozen’s menu yet. They just noted that everything will be made in-house, and almost everything will be sourced locally, including the dairy and fruits. They’re particular proud of the vegan flavors, which “will satisfy even the non-vegan people,” said Warren. There will also be non-alcoholic drinks. Frozen Rolls took over the space that had been home to Tops Kitchens and Baths, keeping the building’s unique angled shape. There will be indoor and outdoor seating." - Nadia Chaudhury

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5/5 - Absolutely Delicious! Frozen Rolls Creamery is hands down one of the best ice cream spots I’ve ever been to! The rolled ice cream is not only delicious but also so fun to watch being made fresh right in front of you. You can tell they use high-quality ingredients — every bite is creamy, rich, and packed with flavor. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, and the shop itself has a clean, cozy vibe that’s perfect for hanging out with friends or bringing the family. I also love the variety of toppings and flavors — there’s truly something for everyone. Highly recommend this place

Google
Unbelievably delicious. Probably the best thing I've ever eaten- coming from someone whose favorite part of life on this planet is food. Try the Thai Iced Tea flavor.

Google
Cool concept but overpriced. Also if you charge so much, you should have flawless aesthetics. They ruined my rolls by rushing through it and did not look like their pics. Also the seating inside and outside is meh.

Google
Came in a few nights ago before closing and got the banana Nutella ice cream (added a brownie) and a key lime pie ice cream bowl, and both were simply amazing! I’m back home across the country now, but still thinking about how awesome this place is. Even chatted with the owner, whom we didn’t know was the owner at the time, and is a very nice guy! 10/10 100% would recommend this place if you love ice cream / frozen treats!

Good Evening Austin TX, I've been enduring a lot these past months. 🙋🏽‍♂️🇺🇸 This is the 1st time I've ever done a review on any type of food/Ice-cream etc however..... This Super Kind Man not only told me I didn't have to buy anything....he bought me a desert his country that; is more than delicious. The kindness was so genuine & Unexpected....It Brought Tears To My Eyes. The complex I live in 55 & Up....cruel, totally selfish & greedy on a different level. The dealership where I bought my 2018 Ford Focused....lying & dishonest over a warranty. In the hospital 3 days & then I came here. Google
They have some dairy free options and each time I've gone, they've been really yummy! They usually have a mix of fruity and chocolatey dairy free flavors. They have some outdoor seating if you want to bring your pup like I did!

Google
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! First and LAST time to this place. We ordered and the order taker was RUDE. We waited 32 minutes for 2 ice creams. Once we got them one was wrong. We told the same guy and he made us wait for him to remake it. We waited a total of 55 Minutes!!! UNACCEPTABLE! When we got the second ice cream there was barely any toppings on it. There were 2 employees there and neither one had on hairnets or hats. Standing there 55 min and neither one washed their hands once. TO BE HONEST I WANT A REFUND! NOT ONLY FOR THE LONG WAIT, BUT ALSO THE MEDIOCRE TASTE, BAD ATTITUDE and bad hygiene.

Yelp
The rolls were so good I got the strawberry one with graham crackers and Nutella drizzle, the people working there were fast and nice. the outside seating was aesthetic the inside could use a little more work but not bad , the location is a little weird , very closed out but didn't get Lost getting there

Yelp
Getting here was a hassle since it's difficult to turn into the small parking lot in front, when the main road is one of the busiest in downtown Austin. Parking is made even stickier when there are large trucks parked, making getting to any vacant spots in-between said trucks a tight squeeze. Service was sub-par. I ordered at the counter, and it felt like I waited double the time that it should have taken. I ordered the key lime flavor, which should have had lime flavored ice cream rolls with Graham cracker crumbles mixed in and topped with whipped cream. I ordered a small size, but the serving seemed pretty hefty, and as a result, I couldn't finish it. I also felt like it lacked Graham cracker mixins, and the key lime flavor got too old, too soon. The shop was also too homegrown, and it seemed like the shopkeepers didn't care that customers could see into the kitchen. Overall, it wasn't my favorite ice cream place in Austin, but it seems to be the only place to get Thai ice cream rolls in the city.
google avatar

Tina D.

Yelp
I tried their key lime, Thai icy and the coconut ash one. I love their key lime the most because very mild and still delicious. Their coconut ash is very mild flavor and only taste like coconut. Their Thai icy was good but too sweet for me. I'm sad that they don't do mix in toppings though.

Yelp
Very quiet place with great rolled ice cream! Service was adequate. The taste was excellent!
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
It is an adorable little ice cream shop where you pick your flavors and the toppings and they roll out the cream right in front of you! At night and on weekends they do get super busy so it could take around 20 minutes of waiting. I like their strawberry smash because there are little chunks of strawberries inside that make the texture super satisfying. The only downside is the parking lot is super small and the spaces are hard to get out of, so I suggest parking further out and walking if possible.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
I love having frozen rolled ice cream! It's both fun and I like the texture. The ice cream here has a nice sweet taste that tastes like the ice cream has been sweetened with condensed milk. Whipped cream is also added on top of the ice cream. I got the Matcha Heaven flavor and it's a sweet matcha green tea flavor. Yummy! I've also had the Thai-cy rolls in the past too and it's also yummy.

Yelp
My husband and I decided to have a sweet after dinner and stopped by Frozen Rolls Creamery. As we drove around and found this place we noticed that the parking lot is really small. So we had to drive around and found parking in a nearby neighborhood. We walked to the creamery. As we walked in we looked around. It's kind of small in the ordering area and can get crowded but the area for indoor seating was really big. We ordered and paid and they took our name for the order. The wait was about 10 minutes as they were busy for a Sunday night. I did watch as they were rolling the ice cream. It was cool to see the process. They eventually called our name and we got our ice cream. It was cold and creamy. The cookie dough bites added the sweet to the ice cream that I wanted so it wasn't too sweet. It was a good sweet treat but a little pricey for two people. The cost was about $28 for two ice creams with tax and tip.
google avatar

Jake H.

Yelp
Frozen Rolls Creamery tasted great. Getting 4 stars because it was really slow, I'm talking 45 minutes to get our ice cream and it wasn't even busy. Monkey business is a great one.
google avatar

Rr O.

Yelp
I genuinely enjoyed this dessert. There's a wait sometimes but i think it was because there was only 3 workers. Very polite as well. I got mines to go so I didn't get the inside experience but it was calm and quiet vibes.
google avatar

Yelp
Because it was 90 degrees yesterday now, this was not a want, but a necessity. Dairy free green tea rolled ice cream (AKA, "matcha heaven") from Frozen Rolls Creamery is the antidote to the premature Austin heat you need in your life too. It's mercifully not too sweet, light, refreshing, and those thin flaky layers are an absolute textural delight. You can load it up with vegan toppings, like crushed Oreos, fresh berries, coconut, and mochi, too. Bonus points and it feels necessary to call out the fact that there's a small parking lot in front! Since this is on a prime strip of North Lamar, those in the know will treasure this info. Otherwise, you can always ditch your car at Whole Foods a block away. Whatever you do, don't just drive by this treat. It's worth a stop anytime.

Yelp
I was walking by and decided to give it a try. Ice cream on a hot day is a win win. I was first in line to order so I assumed the service would be quick. Eagerly I watched as the artisans poured liquid flavored heavy cream on the frozen plates and began mixing and chopping until it froze- then they rolled away. As I watched, the workers seemed annoyed that I was in fact watching- yet the frozen metal plates are all on display for customers to watch.. hmm. As more time passed, the customers who had ordered ahead got annoyed as they had been waiting a long while. In the end, it took over 30 min to get the $10 Coconut Volcanic Ash that I ordered- it was delicious but the experience overall could be improved

Yelp
I took my son here for a special summer treat on a Mommy-Son date. I was so happy that they had free parking downtown, but even more excited to learn they had keto options, which meant that I could enjoy a treat too! I have to follow a diabetic diet, so keto desserts are how I am able to safely treat myself. The ice cream was delicious and watching the rolls get made was half the fun! I will definitely be back and can't wait to bring some friends along.

Yelp
Flavors are terrific. Very smooth and subtle so it doesn't taste super sugary. So refreshing!

Brenda L.

Yelp
Food and service was amazing ! The ambiance was great! My kiddo loved being able to see her ice cream rolls being made. Would recommend !
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Such a cute place! We had 3 different kinds of rolled ice creams (Cookies & Cream, S'mores, and Monkey Business), all were delicious. Not a long wait, plenty of parking, plus both indoor and outdoor seating. Thanks for helping me check off my 11 year old's birthday list!
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
This place smells like mold inside and they got my friends order wrong. Was not worth a $9 ice cream.
google avatar

Kendra J.

Yelp
Expensive Expensive Expensive This is a cool concept but execution is missing the heavy rolls make it tuff to eat and at nearly $20 fir two ice creams it's too expensive and the place smells
google avatar

Edwin L.

Yelp
Tried this for the first time and was a cool experience... the experience was made even better bc the staff were very friendly. The ice cream does take a few minutes to make bc it's made by hand and to your custom order. Give it a try!
google avatar

Michele B.

Yelp
Came here after a dinner date and ordered the cookies and cream. While the ice cream is good, the toppings are a tad light. Honestly, it came with one oreo and what was supposed to be mixed in couldn't be tasted. It tasted as if I ate vanilla ice cream with one oreo. And it was $10. I actually regretted not going to a traditional ice cream shop because I really wanted cookies and cream. This place has potential, just think it has to add a little more to the toppings for the overall fee charged.
google avatar

Yelp
We visited today and it was so yummy! We ordered a Cookies & Cream, Rocky Road and Smores. All 3 were delicious. The young ladies working the register were so sweet and friendly. The art on the walls is super cute, great photo op! Thank you Frozen Rolls Creamery!
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
My son and I go every Monday after school and it's our favorite time. The ice cream itself is top notch and it's so much fun to watch it being made. See you again on Monday!!

Gungor D.

Yelp
Very delicious rolled ice cream and friendly staff! We visited with my husband. It's a family operated shop. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Katherine A.

Yelp
So yummy! Had it set up for pick up and it was ready at the right time. The toppings were generous and the portion was plenty! Would definitely go again. Lots of people there on a Friday night
google avatar

Xia B.

Yelp
I have absolutely no idea why I am so obsessed with this ice cream. It taste so clear to me. Like simple ingredients: milk, sugar, rice. And a serving of ice cream can set you back $10 easily. Yet, I won't buy any store-bought ice cream now or really go elsewhere. Is this addiction? Thanks Frozen Rolls Creamery
google avatar

Mk P.

Yelp
Best ice cream spot in Austin. The ice cream flavors are fun and the ice cream is delicious! And the setting is super cute! I mean who doesn't love a yeti?! The service was great and has the vibe of a family run business which I love.

Kieran R.

Yelp
Super cute little shop, loved the ice cream! The man who took our order was incredibly sweet and patient considering I think there was a little language barrier. Ordering was good, ice cream took a few minutes but after it was done the cashier brought it out to the patio where me and my friends were at. Never had a person take out food to a patio anywhere but a sit down restaurant. The ice cream had everything I asked for and a great amount of it. I was so excited just getting to hold it. I'm from Chicago and Chinatown is full of places like this. So getting to visit one one up to par with them on a trip to Austin was amazing. Me and my friends loved the color changing spoons, super unique.
google avatar

Gurpreet L.

Yelp
The ice cream is AMAZING! I don't know what they put in it but they have me craving it all the time. Not a week goes by that I don't want to get my usual order from Frozen Rolls. I normally order through DoorDash but I have noticed that if I go in person, it takes a good while to get your ice cream. It's not a dealbreaker because I know it takes time to make each of the rolls from scratch but if you're in a rush, this isn't the place for you. I've tried a ton of their flavors but my favorite is by far the strawberry smash. Add a little bit of crushed oreos in there and you got yourself a top notch dessert

Iris G.

Yelp
So yummy and loved that they're open late. Also really customizable! I got the key lime ice cream and they used really ingredients (fresh lime), not fake syrups.

Hector B.

Yelp
Horrible place If I could give zero stars I would. My spouse and I arrived here at 6:20pm and did not receive our first ice cream until 7:05pm. We got our 2nd ice cream until 7:13pm. Service was horrible! There is a food truck located next to the place and people were eating in the patio of this place. Taking up the little space available to the customer. That is unacceptable! It smells really nasty as well! Ps. Not worth 23$ ice cream the only cool part was the color changing spoons.
google avatar

Jadyn P.

Yelp
This place is dope. Open late. And fresh flavors that beat this intense heat. The staff is super nice and accommodating. -jp

Yelp
Today I visited this place and the smell was unbearable It smelled like expired milk that's hasn't been cleaned up for a while. My husband and I held are breath the entire time we were there, we waited about 10 minutes, we were the only ones in line and the employee there said she would be with us shortly. She started tiding up the station and after waiting for so long in that smell we decided to leave. It was not a pleasant experience. Would not recommend.

Zachary S.

Yelp
Actually so fire fr, hit this place up. Get the cookies and cream Local and family owned
google avatar

Yelp
The ice cream rolls were fine, a little bit on the sweeter side but they do offer a decent variety of flavors including chai and some others.
google avatar

Shelby I.

Yelp
While the ice cream is always delicious, the service and location makes me not want to go. The building always smells weird. The employees are often slow and lacking any customer service skills. On top of that, you always have to stress about the parking situation.
google avatar

Yelp
Frozen Rolls Creamery is such a treat - in a million different ways! My husband and I first experienced thai ice cream rolls when we visited Thailand and it such a fun way to get ice cream (all ages!) It's a little slower and a little pricier than your run of the mill ice cream shop - but this isn't run of the mill and I can't stress that enough. The experience, the quantity (it's a lot of ice cream!), the flavors and the final touches (hello adorable branding, games and reusable color changing spoons) make this my ice cream shop for something refreshing or when I want a big smile out on my face Outside of COVID: I love getting the fudge brownie flavor with nutella drizzle on top. You have the option for base, mix in and drizzle all included but I'm a true and true chocolate gal. My hubby on the other hand lives for their Thai Tea rolls and includes mochi and condensed milk drizzle. YUM. We typically come here, grab our rolls and sit down with Battleship or a plethora of their other board games available. During COVID: Ordering process online was very easy but it looks like you can also walk up and order. They have a huge free parking lot and created a contact free hand off to grab our rolls - which we happily devoured in our cars. Almost everything (if not everything) has a dairy free vegan option - literally something for everyone. I usually get the fudge brownie but this is a special and currently unavailable. No worries though, their oreos and cream was available and may be my new favorite. I can not stress how nice the owner of this shop is and how delicious their rolls are. Will always keep coming back - support small businesses!
google avatar

Shalini M.

Yelp
We had the strawberry frozen roll ice cream which was good- not too sweet, good texture with graham cracker. I would say, the space inside smelt a little dingy and we had to wait for about 20 minutes to get our order.
google avatar

S M.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our first time at frozen rolls creamery when they first opened. However, since then, the customer service has not been impressive. The wait has been crazy long, especially on weekends (understandable) however the employees never have a boot to their step. The place could also use a deep cleaning. Last visit we took my mother, and in the middle of the afternoon they had all of their lights turned off. We were almost turned away until we checked if they were open. Still after we entered, the employee didn't turn on the lights or open sign. Probably not to create business. We'll still have an ice cream here once in a while but are not expecting top quality.
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
One and done experience for us. Spent about $21 (including 18% tip) and this is what we got. It doesn't compare to the other pics (on Yelp) with garnishments. The parking situation is not ideal either.
google avatar

Karen Q.

Yelp
Big fan of the Thai-cy Rolls flavor, the taste was spot on with a traditional Thai tea drink. I normally don't like whipped cream, but it completed this flavor. It was so good mixed with the ice cream! Monkey business was just okay. I really enjoy their variety and uniqueness when it comes to flavors - made it hard to choose! The portions are gigantic, one is easily enough to share between two for a post-dinner dessert. I kind of wish they had a smaller size available because we ended up wasting half the ice cream we didn't finish.

Melissa Nailea C.

Yelp
The matcha ice cream was legit the best ice cream I have very tasted in my life. Totally recommend. It's underrated y'all need to give it a try!!!
google avatar

Mar M.

Yelp
Amazing food amazing people ! Always friendly in the Austin city . Peanutbutter for the win ! Ask for it

Brigid F.

Yelp
The best ice cream place in the Austin area! Impeccable service. They went above and beyond to deliver ice cream to us.
google avatar

Andrew C.

Yelp
It's really not just ice cream - it's dessert with a mini show. You get to watch them make your rolled up ice cream. Choose a base, a topping and a drizzle (add a few more for a little extra is you're feeling it). It all goes down on the cold place and then smashed flat and scrapped into little rolls. I went with the blueberry ice cream which has spirulina to give it that crazy blue color. Topped it with more blueberries, 'natch, and then a drizzle of honey over the top. Got a color changing spoon to help wolf this thing down. Sweetness of the ice cream varies with your ingredients - so you can go full decadent or be a bit more reserved. Parking is a bit crazy since the lot is small, seating inside can accommodate roughly a dozen folks. If there's a few folks in front, it will take a little bit to get your food out since they make it all from scratch.
google avatar

Madison R.

Yelp
Ice cream is good but takes a while to get ice cream and every time I've been it's been medium busy for a small ice cream shop and usually only 2 employees so expect to wait. The only reason I give 3 stars is because of the smell in the place I literally cannot eat my ice cream inside it smells so bad like a nasty restroom- which the restroom door was propped open but the smell seams to be there every time I go in.
google avatar

Sara O.

Yelp
This seems a matter of personal preference, but I don't really get the craze. I see scores of rave reviews and I don't get it. The ice cream itself was fine, not out of this world. The rolls are hard for kids to maneuver/scoop so it got a little messier than typical ice cream in a cup. It was $22 for three of us, which is too much for ice cream as far as I'm concerned. We could have split one, but I didn't know they gave you so much. I guess for the size along with two toppings it's not a crazy price, but we wasted much of it. I guess this is more geared toward grown ups who want atypical ice cream than a mom and two small kids.

DeVont'e C.

Yelp
The best ice cream I've ever had, from the toasted marshmallown't melting into my mouth to the amazing customization.
google avatar

Kyra H.

Yelp
The ice cream itself is decent, but it was way too overpriced. $10 per ice cream, and 50 cents per add on. The facility smells like a public restroom and they blast songs with obscene lyrics, so I wouldn't label this a family friendly place. We also ordered a s'mores ice cream but it ended up being 80% chocolate syrup- and that was after we stopped them from adding even more. I wished there was more Thai iced tea flavor in the ice cream I ordered, and also found myself wishing it was creamier. All in all I would have rather bought myself a whole pint of vanilla ice cream from HEB than visit this establishment again.

Yelp
Love the ice cream; hate the complete lack of professionalism & inability to manage order flow. Or keep their hours of operation straight. Frozen Rolls' sizable crowds over the past year are an interesting surprise, considering I used to live a half-mile away and drove past the place at least twice a day - and almost never saw more than one or two cars in the parking lot. The place opened in early 2019, but after its well-executed launch seemed to struggle with attracting business later in the year - not sure if its general lack of visibility along N. Lamar was the problem (set back well from the street, which isn't helpful to people on foot or traveling via bike), or it being barely three blocks away from one of the OG Amy's Ice Cream stores at Sixth & Lamar (which also happens to be much more visible & draws decent street traffic). Most of the Yelper reviews over the past few months reflect my own experience there as well, to such an extent that I don't even bother trying to go into their store personally, given their lack of parking and oftentimes extended wait. I'm also entirely baffled by what their actual operating hours might be. According to Frozen Rolls' management, the place is supposedly open 2pm-11pm seven days a week. According to myself, it's usually closed on slower weekdays and woefully understaffed the rest of the time. While I completely understand nowadays that we have a huge & ongoing labor shortage, that alone isn't an excuse for what's rather clearly a management problem. Our other local ice cream shops have been successfully managing crowds for decades - at least pre-Covid, the line at any given Amy's could readily be lengthy on a hot day - and while I realize Frozen Rolls had an ownership change last year, they've had a full 14 months to work out operational kinks, to no apparent avail. Their ice cream is good, but not THAT good; at this point I've given up trying to order anything there either after 5pm or between Thursday & Sunday (but most of all on weekends). If you can't meet demand, you should either increase supplies (e.g. hire more staff or open another location) or stop *trying* to meet it when you fail 90% of the time. Not seeing why Frozen Rolls can't simply limit their operating hours until they figure out a way to deal with demand in a reasonable fashion.

Yelp
Frozen rolls...part of the rolled ice cream phase that's taken over Austin. Yet...so good. So so good. It's so creamy and they give you quite a lot. It justifies the price, but I'm left wondering, should I really eat all of this ice cream? The answer is, yes, I still ate it. There's only one size and you can definitely split. Fun for kids (and yes, adults too) with temperature changing spoons and cool wall art. The parking lot is a bit small so beware, you might need to do street parking during the summer in the busy Lamar area. They do take a long time (15-20 mins) to get your ice cream depending on how many people are before you. I loved the Matcha and black sesame.

Yelp
Frozen rolls creamery is cute in concept! The location is great, the outdoor seating is in abundance, but the ice cream was lackluster. The flavor in both orders was weak (strawberry smash and cookies and cream). When I did get a bite of fresh strawberry, the fruit was more sour than sweet. The staff was slow paced. We arrived 20 minutes after opening and when we ordered they said they were "still setting up." We then waited 30 minutes for the ice cream to be done. I'm glad I tried this place out, but I wouldn't eat here again.
