The 38 Best Restaurants in Osaka, Japan | Eater

"Tonkatsu, or breaded and deep fried pork, is best known as a greasy, hearty Japanese comfort food. However, French-trained chef Fujii Kazuhiro brings nuance to the dish by incorporating patisserie technique in the batter and unusual flavors such as red wine sauce. He sources high end pork such as the Iwachu breed from Iwate and Tokyo-X, the “Rolls-Royce of pork” famed for its marbled meat. Kazuhiro also uses a careful blend of oils and cooks certain parts at higher temperatures for maximum lusciousness. Dig into tender cutlets with a touch of fat and slightly sweet meat, pink in the middle with juicy gravy, and you’ll understand why this tiny counter received a Michelin Bib Gourmand award. Must-try dish: Reserve the tonkatsu omakase course in advance to try a little bit of everything. The ever-changing set might include fillet of pork from Gunma, a deep fried kushikatsu skewer, and curry-flavored minced cutlet with sides of rice, red miso, and tonkatsu sauce (a savory-sweet blend of soy sauce, ketchup, mustard, and mirin)." - La Carmina

"The chef came over from the world of French cuisine to fry tonkatsu. Ingredients and cooking techniques are a complex mix of various elements, creating flavours found nowhere else. Wielding a blend of multiple oils, the chef lends his skills as a baker to the coating. Red wine accentuates the sauce. Experience inspires the ideas of this chef, who was indelibly impressed by the tonkatsu craftsmen of Tokyo. A chance meeting that changed a life, resulting in beautiful flavours." - Michelin Inspector

I've had tonkatsu all over, including some of the highly recommended ones in Tokyo. I can confidently say that Tonkatsu Fujii is one of the best I've ever had. You'll need to trek a bit further out from Osaka city center and will need some luck to grab a reservation online (small time window + limited seats), but I will emphatically tell you: It's 1000% worth it. 1. The cutlet and loin tonkatsu were fried to perfection. Even with completely different fat contents, both were perfectly crispy on the outside with an extremely tender interior and wonderful finish. I would have ordered more if I had the room for it. 2. The chicken tonkatsu was truly a masterpiece and showed off the chef's technique. At first, when I saw that it was made from white/chicken breast meat, I had worries that it might be a bit dry or tough. As it turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong: Even with a perfectly crispy exterior, the chicken breast was extremely tender and juicy. I mean, you have a really tiny window when cooking chicken breast, even when you can see the doneness. I really have no idea how one would control the doneness to perfection like this, when the chicken breast is battered and deep fried. Absolutely impressive. 3. As if the other items weren't impressive enough, the minced pork tonkatsu was something that simply took our breaths away. First impressions was that, again, it might be a bit dry, with a ground meat mouth feel. But once you bite into it, wow o wow: Crispy, juicy (and I mean dripping with meaty goodness), tender, and just so flavorful. This was my girlfriend's favorite dish of the day, and I can see why. (We had no idea it was a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant before visiting. Unlike many others, Tonkatsu Fujii is worthy of the recognition!) Last but not least, I can't say enough about the service. I made the rookie mistake of jumping on the express subway instead of the local one and ended up at Hirakatashi station, nearly 30 km from Osaka. We then had to take the express subway back to our initial station and then jump on the correct local train to get to our reservation. Unfortunately, this meant that we were nearly 30 minutes late when we finally arrived. We were so grateful when the proprietors at Tonkatsu Fujiu were kind enough to squeeze us in and allow us to be seated, this would have been the one meal from our trip we would not have wanted to miss. They also took the time to patiently explain the menu to us even though we only spoke English. All in all, a 5 star service experience. I've already said it several times to friends upon returning to Taiwan: Tonkatsu Fujii is worth buying a ticket to Osaka all by itself. And I mean it, I'm already craving and looking forward to my next visit!

Google
The best tonkatsu we’ve had in two weeks in Japan and one of the best meals in general. All of the meat was so tender and juicy. Very deserving of its high rating and Michelin bib gourmand distinction. Everything was delicious, but if I had to recommend one dish, it would be the Tokyo X or the minced pork tonkatsu. You can’t go wrong on the menu. Keep in mind that you definitely need a reservation if you want to go here.

This was the best tonkatsu of my life, bar none! It was well worth the trip into the Osaka suburbs from downtown and is within close waking distance of Sembayashi Station. The restaurant is very small so reservations via Tablecheck are a must. There are a variety of sets available and I went with the most premium dinner omakase at ¥4,750. This includes a pork fillet cutlet, a menchi-katsu, a chicken fillet katsu and finally a premium loin cutlet. This is accompanied by tea, rice and cabbage. There is an extensive drinks menu as well including non-alcoholic options. I was blown away by each course, hard to choose a favourite when they were all so good! There was plenty of variety and portions were generous. Service was warm and welcoming; while most guests are local they are starting to receive more international visitors given their Michelin Bib Gourmand. All in all a really enjoyable experience and great value for money. Highly recommended!

Google
Hand downs, this is by far the best Tonkatsu place I've ever had! The best means the quality of food and price combination. The quality of their food is top notch. Pretty fresh and clean authentic Japanese Tonkatsu restaurant. Service is fantastic and very friendly. It's like a show to see the chef to cook. We can't speak Japanese (We are from Taiwan and US), but we still enjoy the food and service every bit. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who wants authentic, and quality food. Can't wait to go back when I visit Osaka again.

Have visited this place twice. The pork, service and vibes have always been on point. This is a tiny counter restaurant operated by a friendly couple. Reservations can be made easily on Tablecheck. It is abit out of the city but worth the trip. I recommend getting pork loin tonkatsu and mince cutlet. Everything is fried to perfection here.

Friendly staff who speak English well. Still, it helps to speak a little Japanese to make the process smoother. Delicious food. Attentive waitress. Very reasonable prices.
