I've had tonkatsu all over, including some of the highly recommended ones in Tokyo. I can confidently say that Tonkatsu Fujii is one of the best I've ever had. You'll need to trek a bit further out from Osaka city center and will need some luck to grab a reservation online (small time window + limited seats), but I will emphatically tell you: It's 1000% worth it.
1. The cutlet and loin tonkatsu were fried to perfection. Even with completely different fat contents, both were perfectly crispy on the outside with an extremely tender interior and wonderful finish. I would have ordered more if I had the room for it.
2. The chicken tonkatsu was truly a masterpiece and showed off the chef's technique. At first, when I saw that it was made from white/chicken breast meat, I had worries that it might be a bit dry or tough. As it turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong: Even with a perfectly crispy exterior, the chicken breast was extremely tender and juicy. I mean, you have a really tiny window when cooking chicken breast, even when you can see the doneness. I really have no idea how one would control the doneness to perfection like this, when the chicken breast is battered and deep fried. Absolutely impressive.
3. As if the other items weren't impressive enough, the minced pork tonkatsu was something that simply took our breaths away. First impressions was that, again, it might be a bit dry, with a ground meat mouth feel. But once you bite into it, wow o wow: Crispy, juicy (and I mean dripping with meaty goodness), tender, and just so flavorful. This was my girlfriend's favorite dish of the day, and I can see why.
(We had no idea it was a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant before visiting. Unlike many others, Tonkatsu Fujii is worthy of the recognition!)
Last but not least, I can't say enough about the service. I made the rookie mistake of jumping on the express subway instead of the local one and ended up at Hirakatashi station, nearly 30 km from Osaka. We then had to take the express subway back to our initial station and then jump on the correct local train to get to our reservation. Unfortunately, this meant that we were nearly 30 minutes late when we finally arrived. We were so grateful when the proprietors at Tonkatsu Fujiu were kind enough to squeeze us in and allow us to be seated, this would have been the one meal from our trip we would not have wanted to miss. They also took the time to patiently explain the menu to us even though we only spoke English. All in all, a 5 star service experience.
I've already said it several times to friends upon returning to Taiwan: Tonkatsu Fujii is worth buying a ticket to Osaka all by itself. And I mean it, I'm already craving and looking forward to my next visit!
