15 Essential Phoenix Coffee Shops

"Housed in the larger coffee/hair studio/art Palabra collective, Futuro is a downtown must-visit. The minimalist design of the shop is as stylish as it is commanding. The true star of the show however, are the beans themselves — sourced and roasted by Sey coffee in Willamsburg. Futuro delivers some of the highest quality coffee in Phoenix, with an array of drinks like the sweet almond Mazapan, sugar and Licor 43 spiked Carajillo, and Matcha from Kettl in Brooklyn all served on locally crafted Miro Made ceramics." - Mcconnell Quinn

Futuro - Review - Downtown - Phoenix - The Infatuation

"Maybe you have an affinity for minimalist design, or you just don’t feel like waiting in line to eat at a breakfast spot Guy Fieri has called “gangster.” Futuro is a very white and bright cafe inside a hair salon that serves excellent Mexican coffee drinks (try the Cajeta, made with goat-milk caramel and sea salt) as well as pastries. And if you’re here when they serve brunch - on the weekends October through May only - anything involving barbacoa is on the menu, order it." - Joanna Boyle

Google
Summary: decent coffee, but with lackluster service and little care for customers. We have tried many third wave coffee shops but this one in particular was a bad experience. Go elsewhere if you’re in Phoenix. Full: We came at 11AM on a Saturday, and there was no line. We got two simple drinks (iced matcha, hot latte) and a pastry. The tip screen begins at 20%, and there was a bit of sticker shock to see everything add up to almost $25! We were seated, and waited. Fifteen minutes pass. We gradually watched other people order and get their drinks. No worries we figure, maybe they’re waiting to get everything out at the same time. Another ten minutes pass. Okay, I’ll go ask the person up front about our order. There was no apology. No “oh sorry, let us comp you for that”. She stared back at me and said “they’re working on it”. Five minutes later the drinks and pastry come out. The latte was fine, the matcha tasted powdery and bitter as if it had been rushed. This was disappointing to say the least, I wouldn’t recommend this shop to anyone.

I’m from out of town and love to visit different local coffee shops. Futuro was worth the stop. Love the minimalist feel. However I feel the customer service/friendly vibe could be improved. It wasn’t the best cajeta latte I’ve ever had, but it wasn’t a total disappointment either.

Google
The drinks and atmosphere are great! Service can be hit or miss - the people just don’t feel warm or inviting at times. I’ve also had many issues with their hours where they state they’re open, but they’re closed. This morning I’m standing in front of their beautiful glass entrance and there’s a guy inside who is looking at me and two other ladies but isn’t unlocking the doors or checking to see why we’re out here when it is 8:30 am and their hours indicate they opened at 8:00 am. I’d love to frequent this place more often if they were open and service were better. When the doors were finally unlocked, he didn’t acknowledge us in general or that we had been standing outside while he walked back & forth for 15 minutes.

Google
Excellent coffee; love the location, the amount of light and the outdor seating area. Baristas are friendly and knowledgable. I enjoyed getting some sun outside and reading. I wish I lived closer! Can't wait to try some of their specialty options soon.

Google
Unique coffee shop experience, feels like a trendy coffee shop in Mexico City. Single origin Colombian espresso from the Huila region was on point - prepared perfectly with a very nice stacked presentation. The batch brew drip and lattes were also delicious. Will be returning for sure. Visible kitchen and art was a nice touch as well.

Google
“The best latte I’ve ever had”. We both said that. They use high quality beans from Sey and it shows. This coffee is so much better than other places. They make it with intention and precision. The place is so cool and the ambiance is perfect. They served us in cups that fit the Arizona desert. The people working were really great. This is a top 10 international coffee shop in my opinion.

Google
Amazing architecture, its a must-go for archi and coffee lovers. I got the americano cream, so good. Was planning to get pastry as well but they were $7-8 , a bit overwhelming. They got interesting artists featured, i could easily spent a whole day chilling there.

Google
Update 8/26/23. They started featuring their own in-house Mexican focused pastries. We tried a selection to give them a try and they were all so amazing. So much care and detail goes into the pastries and the coffee drinks every time. They care about their craft! Coffee, pastries and art! Very cool vibe at this excellent coffee shop. They take a lot of pride in their drinks with high end ingredients and how they are prepared. Pastries are top notch to match the coffee and the art vibe gives you a cool space to hang out while enjoying your morning treats. Staff very attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Creative menu and excellent espresso. The baristas were friendly and took their time to make each drink. The interior was very clean (literally and aesthetically) so it's a nice spot to hang out. I ordered an iced moca (stoneground cacao) and throughly enjoyed it. The cacao had a nice bitterness to it and I appreciated the smaller cup, making the drink more espresso forward. If you plan on heading to FUTURO for the first time, there is (metered?) street parking on Garfield and the entrance door is on the left side.

Yelp
I am a huge coffee connoisseur, I found this on the Source App while traveling through town. I went on a Friday morning and got there and waited behind one person. As I ordered the line began to grow... I waited over 25 minutes for one coffee.. to go. I wish there was some heads up on this, I would have definitely gone somewhere else. I understand it's an experience but there should be some indication for customers when they first come in. My coffee wasn't good and the longer wait pushed my plans behind. The chairs and seating aren't made to be sat in for a while for their experience, especially if people are waiting that long and are intended to savor their coffee. Cool concept, cool branding, cool delivery... I do appreciate them pushing the needle with coffee and the whole experience with it. There needs to be more communication to customers on time frame and said experience. I don't think I will be returning.

Yelp
So this place is out of my range! When it comes to high quality coffee this it. The service here is laid back. Everyone seems to go at their own speed. Not in a hurry at all. It is a laid back atmosphere for reals. Come in here after smoking some green, then go talk about here. The kind of coffee here comes with amor kick! Get your heart going. Here visiting Phoenix and was told to try it. Will I come back. No die I don't live here but if I did. Watch out.

Yelp
Omg love!! I was visiting phoenix for a conference and so incredibly fortunate to find this gem of a cafe on the first day. I ended up going 3 of 6 days we were in Arizona, and we were in Sedona for some of that time. The cafe is a whole experience. The space is beautifully curated with local art on the walls and furniture that's really aesthetic. The drinks and come in lovely clay dishware and even the to go drinks are served on a wooden platter. And the food and drinks are incredible! The espresso is served with a palate cleanser (as it should be) and a card with notes about your drinking. The champurrado is not overly sweet it can often be. The tamales are made with heirloom blue corn. The moca is made with stoneground cacao which just elevates it above any other moca I've had. The pride they take in their business is so evident and it really shines through in the product.

Yelp
Service: great cashier, she was very helpful and kind Food: she sold us on the pastries as they're made in house Drinks: I got the cafe de olla and it was amazing! I got it iced and it was perfect, not too sweet Ambiance: such a cute spot with local photography on the walls Parking: typical downtown street parking
google avatar

Yelp
Minimalist white decor, clean lines, artsy vibes and unique menu. There was no one at the counter when we walked in, and we had to wait a bit for someone to show up - no apologies given. The beautiful layout / presentation for the drinks and the fact that they are brought to you made up for it. Parking is street parking downtown. No issues getting a spot on a weekday afternoon, but may be more of an issue on weekends. The artwork inside is constantly rotating, which I like.
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
Very unique coffee shop. We ordered a cappuccino and an iced latte which were solid. The interior of the coffee shop is decorated with art but the art is taped up to the walls with blue masking tape. Not my vibe but definitely could be other people's.
google avatar

Alan N.

Yelp
I love the coffee here. I highly recommend their signature drinks. Cool art work to look at. Only thing is the wifi kind of sucks. Especially if there is a large group of ppl there.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
The salted caramel coffee I got from here was probably the best coffee I've ever had in my life. Nothing compares to the complex rich flavors. Great job and the staff was very nice as well. Just good coffee and good vibes all around! I will definitely be driving out of my way just to get another cup of that tasty coffee!

Yelp
This place is super cool it's so nice inside and you can tell everyone is super nice and friendly which makes you feel super comfortable! I got the CAJETA with oat milk 8/10 I think it just need to be more cold or more ice ! Really rich in flavor and you can taste the espresso beans which I like !

Yelp
A futuristic experience with a unique twist. The ambiance is an avant-garde blend of art and futuristic design, creating a memorable atmosphere for each visit. The standout feature of Futuro is the inventive use of ingredients in their specialty drinks. They venture beyond traditional coffee shop offerings, introducing unusual and exotic components that elevate their beverages to works of art. Futuro is ideal for those seeking more than just a regular coffee. It's a destination for handcrafted specialties made with distinct ingredients, offering a coffee experience unlike any other in Phoenix.
google avatar

Paalika B.

Yelp
We love this place but the service is so slow. I can respect good coffee taking a while to make but 20+ minutes of the staff talking behind the counter is ridiculous. Parking is limited so waiting around that long for a drink is annoying
google avatar

Shujin H.

Yelp
The environment is good for a Saturday morning. Store deco and dinnerware are well designed. Staff are nice. Coffee is great.

Yelp
Futuro was a must visit when visiting my friend in AZ, because it was listed in Food & Wine's best coffee shop in AZ. And I gotta say, it didn't disappoint. Me and my friend went at about 10a on a Sunday, and it was busy. Coffee took about 15 minutes to be brought to us once we ordered. We were told upfront it would take about 15-20 minutes, which I appreciated. During that time, me and my friend went out back to the yard sale that was happening on the premise. There is a couple of spaces for groups of more than 2 to sit, but most seating is for 2 people. Coffee. Both my friend and I ordered a Mar, which is an americano with a vanilla bean creme. Well worth the wait for the coffee. The vanilla bean crème - OMG. It was SO good. It was the perfect balance of sweetness for the americano. I loved the flavor of the coffee; however, if you (like my friend) prefer a milder roast, the coffee may be a little strong. We also ordered a pastry to share, which reminded me of a pecan pie (but absolutely not) on a doughy base. Sorry I know I'm not describing it well, but trust me it was good. It definitely had a 90s grunge vibe, and I was all for it. There is a small parking lot behind the coffee shop designated for its patrons. If it is full, there is metered street parking. My friend who lives in Tempe will definitely be back, and I can't wait to come back when I visit her.

Yelp
This spot never fails! If you're looking for a cute lil minimalist solo date, this place is it! Love dressing up and enjoying a well made cup of coffee. Staff is always friendly and my go to is the mazapan for something sweeter or the cajeta for something less sweet.
google avatar

Rohini G.

Yelp
Very modern cafe with lots of rotating art. I tried a hojicha which was lighter and was not quite as warm as I'd expect. The music is fun but loud for a shop of this size. I was planning to get some light work done but this is not the shop for it.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
A bit pricey but this place is unique with a modern art flare. They welcome you to sit and read without hurrying you out.
google avatar

Yelp
but first, coffee ! & this delightful pastry shared with @phoenixfoodbabies not pictured: MAR iced americano, vanilla bean creme

Yelp
Tasty specialty coffee drinks served in an art gallery-like cafe. Futuro is located next to The Churchill, and it's tucked inside the white Palabra building. There's plenty of street parking available, and indoor and outdoor seating is available. There are interesting art installations + art pieces inside, and the whole aesthetic is minimalist. The menu features interesting drinks, and I personally got the iced cafe de olla, which has piloneillo, cinnamon, anise, and citrus with espresso. The barista was friendly and walked me through the different pastries for the day, which was nice. I really, really loved my drink. The spices were wonderfully balanced with the citrus, and the coffee flavor still came out strong. I also got the chocolate cake, which was dense and tasty. With its convenient location and tasty selection of drinks, I would definitely come back in the future.

Yelp
The name of this spot says it all: it is modern, sleek, and bright in this cafe! I really love the design of the entire space and the best part is the EXCELLENT coffee! I got a signature honey latte and it was divine. Service was fast and the whole cafe is exceptionally clean. Futuro is in the middle of a great artsy district! Lots of beautiful and interesting street art. I really enjoyed my experience here!
google avatar

Yelp
Came from LA and this place was pretty good!!! The matcha was delicious. Not too sweet and not grainy like some places make it. Love the rich green color VS some places being too milky. The house drip coffee also great! My brother finished every drop. Inside seating is maybe 5-6 tables and then a few outside. The art inside is pretty neat!
google avatar

Shannon D.

Yelp
I sorely miss the half stars in Yelp, I would prefer to give FUTURO a 3.5 mainly because the prices are pretty expensive for my idea of coffee, but the ingredient list is definitely high end. This shop was super busy and not a lot of seeing room but if you're heading to the Churchill it's a nice pick me up.
google avatar

Chelsea I.

Yelp
i liked this cafe! very interesting concept as there are art installations with an emphasis on mexican culture. the drinks on the menu are what you would traditionally find at a coffee shop, but with a mexican flair. i ordered a tonic water with espresso and an americano with vanilla cream. i also loved the fashion magazines they have on the wall as they are very fitting for the minimalist atmosphere. overall 5/5 stars - very clean, great staff, and delicious beverages!!!

Yelp
Stopped here today for a caffeine cruise and I was totally impressed. We got choose from horchata and cafe de olla, so my husband and I each got one and shared. I liked the horchata the best it was creamy and not too overly sweet. My husband liked his drink a lot it was definitely flavorful and also not too sweet. The decor is cool too, very modern. Had a lot of fun learning about the drinks and hope to come back!
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
Not worth it, dude. You're paying $7 for a cup of coffee that is so overpriced because of the pretentious ambiance. They say the cup is 12 oz, but I highly doubt this, because I finished it in five sips. It also took about 15 minutes to make my order, even though I was the only person online. Also, I got the Coco latte, but it didn't have any cocoa taste. I recognize it's supposed to be subtle, but I've had enough flavored lattes to be able to distinguish any extra flavor. I would never return. Also, the parking is impossibly annoying and I told them their phone number is not working and they didn't care at all.
google avatar

Zach S.

Yelp
The place is pretty cool on the inside, but that's where it stops. The coffee and drinks aren't very tasty and the recipes are quite odd. There is little to no variety in food and I wouldn't recommend coming here.
google avatar

Keith Lee B.

Yelp
Would be the one of best coffee shops in the area, (amazing coffee and great interior ) if it didn't close soo early! it's not a great place to study/ work at as none of the tables have outlets to charge your computer.

Cynthia O.

Yelp
Does anyone know how to get in? We were visiting from Las Vegas after a friend of ours highly recommended. Got here around 3:15pm before we started driving back home and everything is locked but people are inside. We're confused....
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
After hearing about this place for years, I finally made it a point to see what all the fuss was about. My, oh my, does it live up to the hype! I'm mad at myself for not trying it sooner! The interior is so artsy and hip, the baristas are clearly talented, and the drinks are to die for. I make the 30 minute trek here on a regular basis for an iced cajete, you won't find a better coffee shop in town. Also, there's a parking lot in the back, so I don't have to deal with the tricky street parking downtown.

Helen S.

Yelp
Hey, I came yesterday and I had coffee there it happened that I forgot my purse, can you please double check if you guys have found one? Please email me Helen.ta.smith@gmail.com Thank you so much and the coffee was great
google avatar

Yelp
During my Phoenix trip last year, I combed through numerous coffee shops in search of a good coffee place in downtown Phoenix. Visit g the coffee shop it was really cool, I believe it was in the arts section of Pheonix which is a nice part of town to be around. The look of Futuro is pretty unique, it looks a lot like an art gallery or museum. There are art pieces all around with a coffee counter in the middle of the space. Pretty simple and straight forward menu. For coffee I got the Masapan, for those that don't know it's like a peanut butter coffee. For a Masapan coffee it was pretty good. Definitely a coffee worth trying if you haven't tried it already. It was as good as another coffee shop that I had with the same offering.

Phoebe C.

Yelp
Really cool place with a unique menu! The cajeta and fed coffee and matcha bun we got were both wonderful.
google avatar

Trisha S.

Yelp
I came here twice in a week! I love the care and attention the baristas take into making the drinks. I ordered a cafe de olla which was well balanced with subtle spices and citrus flavor. Another day I had the moca. Although both tasty, I prefer the olla. The quality and presentation of the drinks are magical. Also I appreciate the Latin cultural influence in the drinks and artwork. My only feedback would be close the doors when it is chilly.
google avatar

Doug M.

Yelp
Cool vibe. The signature coffees are great. Not like your usual coffee shop. It's like a Yeezy museum.
google avatar

Brittany T.

Yelp
Gorgeous coffee shop that does indeed have a futuristic aesthetic. It's clean and modern decorated with art on the walls, a display of books, and a cozy seating corner. Wide variety of unique drinks ranging from matcha to specialty espresso mixes with fair pricing. I got an iced matcha with oat milk and it was ceremonial grade and delicious! Definitely recommend stopping by here to enjoy a cup of coffee and modern artwork.
google avatar

Yelp
FURTURO has been on my Phoenix Coffee spots list and finally made a visit back. I tried the Tónica, I am a big fan of the tonic espressos, and this one was excellent. The espresso has some great fruit notes and perfect drink while walking around in the summer heat and exploring Roosevelt Row. The coffee shop had some great installations and definitely loved the arts involved in the space.
google avatar

Danielle J.

Yelp
I would give this place 15 stars if I could. The Tónico is excellent - really great fruity notes coming from the espresso. The baristas were nice and kind. I come here to get my haircut and got a drink as I left. The mission of the space is just as good as the drinks. It's a bilingual space (English and Spanish) that makes everyone feel welcome. Looks like what you'd imagine a late 2010's Kanye thought the future would look like. Very good energy. This is a great place to stop in to downtown phx.
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
The ambience is next level in this modern coffee shop, and the pastries looked incredible (although I managed to restrain myself). I went with a goat's milk latte since all of the coffee options were creative and complex and not standard by any means--I thought it was yummy but didn't have as much goat's milk flavor until I got to the last few sips. Combined with the super high price I paid for it (almost $7), I was a bit let down. But the shop itself is awesome and would make a great spot for a (pricey) coffee date. Is it over-the-top and a bit pretentious? Yes. But did I hate it? No.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
One of a kind shop with some unusual coffee flavors and an interesting art-gallery vibe. Had a barista walk through the menu, and I wish I could remember which drinks we ordered but they were both amazing. For us it was about trying something new, and Futuro delivered. Not a coffee shop I'd head to work on my laptop or something, but to visit for a super tasty java and visit with some friends it was top notch.

Tyler C.

Yelp
Really good coffee genuine staff and clean operation and the art they have on display is cool too
google avatar

Barbara P.

Yelp
I love the music they play here and the mini desks there are for laptops, books, etc. The only downside is that they don't have any outlets!!

Vitoria R.

Yelp
The food and coffee is incredible, the aesthetic and atmosphere is amazing. The workers were extremely nice and so well dressed as well.
google avatar

Jesse G.

Yelp
Their hours are completely all over the place. This causes one to waste time driving all the way across town only to discover they decided to close early this week. How about some consistency?!
google avatar

Peyton C.

Yelp
Hip coffee spot alert!%#*!? Hip coffee spot alert!&$&!*% Who can beat a good ole' hip coffee shop? Personally I know I can't. Whenever I visit an area or even locally I am always looking for a local coffee shop to support. Future has a great Concept to it and they have art and Even some items that you can purchase from the store. I thoroughly enjoyed the vibes in concept at this store was going for. I had one of the lattes that was caramel and had it iced. It was called the Cajeta. I did ask her to not be as sweet as I don't like my coffee drinks to be overloaded with sugar. The menu option is good and I've got quite a few options which is nice. Personally I actually struggled to determine what I wanted to try as there is so many great options on the menu. The employee was extremely friendly and kind. I could tell that there was CARE and craft that went to each beverage that was given to a customer. That is always nice to see I also appreciated how everything was measured out. You know it's a good coffee shop when they measure out all the ingredients to each drink. I would say though it did seem like it was taking a little bit longer than it should have for some of the drinks to be made and I wasn't in a rush but I could imagine that if somebody was really trying to get in and out that could be quite frustrating. I was quite tempted by the various pastry options that were displayed, but I didn't end up trying any. There is parking, however there is a cost associated. this is a great area with some other areas that you can support down the street. So do you give yourself some time to walk and explore.

Rachael B.

Yelp
Everything about Futuro is fantastic! Food, ambiance but specifically the coffee was close to perfect!!' Highly recommend
google avatar

Aundrea C.

Yelp
If you wanna come here for coffee, pencil in an extra 30 minutes into your schedule, cuz that's how long it will take to get your order. Also, we ordered two different coffees with different milks - but the cups aren't labeled so we have no idea which is which. That's fun little game to play when you're lactose intolerant! Aside from the wait time and weird vibe, the coffee is good. But I will not be returning.
google avatar

Tami N.

Yelp
What a beautiful space. Futuro can be considered "hipster" to some but I found the service to not be pretentious whatsoever. Our cashier was very nice. Alright, so what about the coffee? Filtro (5/5): Solid coffee choice. The quality of the beans was evident. If you like your coffee as minimalistic as possible, get this. Cajeta (5/5): My first cajeta and I loved it. I like my coffee on the sweeter side hence the goat milk caramel was such a treat. Good choice if you've never had anything similar before. Don't think I will ever find a coffee shop as unique as Futuro. If I ever find myself back in Phoenix, I would consider trying their food next visit. Also, be sure to take time to check out the local art they showcase!
google avatar

Karina G.

Yelp
FUTURO was recommended to us, and I knew had had to check it out, once I learned they serve heart coffee, from Portland Oregon! Being a Portland native, I miss my pacific NW coffee! FUTURO is a unique place, relaxing vibe, serving up coffee, pastries, and breakfast items that are absolutely amazing! I also learned that my FAVORITE, Phoenix local bread maker, Heft, is baking his magical breads, right here at FUTURO! They take every step to perfect their brew, starting with their machines, and skill! Don't expect to get you coffee in 2 seconds, or phone ordered in ready for pick-up, no,no,no....this is real coffee! The smooth balance, and richness will delight any coffee connoisseur!

Yelp
The best coffee in the state of Arizona. The drinks were so good we went back the next morning. The drinks are all crafted and service was friendly. I tried both the Lechero and the cajeta, both delicious. All in a beautiful space. Thank you for wearing masks and keeping your community safe.
