Panadería Gala - Review - Roma - Mexico City - The Infatuation

"What started as a bakery for Eduardo García’s Máximo Bistrot and Lalo is now unintentionally a speakeasy for pastry lovers. To get in, ring the bell on the street, wait for the buzzer, then follow the winding, shadowy alley to a Nordic-minimalist room with an open kitchen offering pastries, breads, and sandwiches. Zero in on the guava “croffin” (croissant and muffin hybrid), the perfect balance of crispy and light, with pastry cream and almonds adding extra magic. Or the not overly sweet chocolate croissant—the bitter dark chocolate hits all the right notes and is rich without being overwhelming. If you’re lucky to snag one of the six seats at the communal table, do yourself a favor and eat the ham sandwich on-site. The smoky ham, comté cheese, mustard, and fluffy scrambled eggs combo on their crunchy-soft bread is next-level and even better with a flat white." - Guillaume Guevara

The 38 Best Restaurants in Mexico City

"To access Panadería Gala, you must ring the doorbell of an unassuming building on Tonalá Street in Roma Norte, head through a second door, and pass through a corridor filled with the aromas of freshly baked bread before reaching the pastry workshop. Inside, visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate along with one — or several — of Panadería Gala’s delicious pastries, while taking in the shop’s operation: the bakers rhythmically rolling out bread, the hypnotic smell coming out of the oven, the comings and goings of staff. Panadería Gala’s seating is limited, but the experience is a dream for pastry lovers." - Natalia de la Rosa, Daniela Galarza

This bakery requires you to buzz, which unlocks the gate and allows you access into a combination kitchen / chef table area. One gets to watch pros make all sorts of sweet breads. There’s seating for about 8 in total, and while they offer coffees, it’s meant to be a quick in-and-out experience. Odds are a few people will already be inside and you might have to wait (or take the baked goods to go). They have a ton of rotating goods but their cruffin is definitely the star. We went during Christmas week and they had the special Rosca de Reyes for sale. The pastries are high quality, and while prices are closer to the standard of Canada/USA, they are reasonably priced given all the environmental factors. That said, there’s something unwelcoming about the process of being buzzed in, and while the chef table is unique, one can’t get comfortable given the constant pressure of staff and waiting patrons. Credit cards accepted. Staff speaks English as well.

Delicious pastries, coffee, and ponche. Our server Nadia was friendly and helpful. It's easy to miss - look for the buzzer and they'll let you in.

We discovered this incredible little gem during our visit to CDMX– a speakeasy bakery tucked away in a charming alley. Once inside, you can savor the delightful experience of selecting scrumptious pastries and baked treats right from the kitchen shelf. The guava-filled pastry we tried was absolutely divine – so much so that we immediately indulged in a second one! Despite its cozy size, the bakery offers a welcoming atmosphere with seating for around 8 guests.

Very cool bakery. Wonderful pastry and bread. Service was excellent, Nadia was helpful, friendly and charming. My favorites were the crescent moon and the raspberry roll, pictured here. Don’t miss it!

This is literally a whole in the wall well done and well thought out. There is no sign outside. Once you enter a building there is a door that says “Gala”. Once you open it there is a long hallway that takes you to the kitchen where all the action happens. The concept is breathtaking. How ever it lack’s a good customer experience.

A speakeasy bakery or a magical place where flour, sugar and butter come alive! This place was small, intimate and delivered not only gorgeous breads but a memorable experience. We rang the door bell, were buzzed in through two doors, walked down a corridor and came upon a communal table/baking kitchen/coffee bar. It was bright and warm and everything you would want a small bakery kitchen to feel like. All the breads were amazing and delicious. Cannot say enough. Try everything until you find out what's your favorite. My personal favorite was the moon shaped ricotta, chocolate filled bread with a hint of orange.

When I heard of this bakery speakeasy I was immediately intrigued - and this place delivered. Pastries were incredible (even at 2:30pm when they were getting ready to close). We had a cinnamon bun and a frangipan croissant and as baker myself I was amazed at the flavors and textures. Highly recommend when in CDMX!

From my experience, the 3.9 rating is unwarranted (appears to be a bunch of people ganging up on the business over what reads to be an isolated incident). For me, it was a lovely magical experience to ring the little doorbell and enter a long hallway into the beautiful bread kitchen. Staff was super nice - talked me through all the pastries. I ordered a frutos rojos - excellent pastry, not too sweet - and latte for 139 pesos. I definitely want to go back to try more and stay to watch the bread making.
