"Polk Gulch was also the home of city’s oldest gay bar, the Gangway at 841 Larkin Street. That bar closed in January 2019 and has since been transformed into a Kung Fu-inspired bar called Young’s Kung Fu Action Theatre & Laundry." - Ellen Fort

"The Gangway, SF’s oldest gay bar, recently sold and closed. Activist Nate Allbee is forming a collective ownership group to recreate it at a new location. The bar has a long history, raided by police in its early days and operating as a gay bar since the ‘60s. It is known for its ship-themed decor, with weathered driftwood and a ship's bow above the door. Allbee is negotiating with the new owner to retain and store these relics, aiming to rebuild the bar in another location." - Caleb Pershan

My favorite gay dive bar in the TL will be greatly missed! I have so many wonderful memories with friends and locals here. I can not believe they will be closing. Thank you for all the lovely smiles and dances! Cheers to Gangaway!

Gang Way won't be for everyone; it's one of the remaining few gay bars in the Polk Corridor / Tenderloin. Its clientele is often an older crowd, but space is generally respected. Great to grab a drink after work with a friend for very, very strong pours at very, very reasonable prices. Possibly my favorite dive in the city — but very few of my friends like it.

Since I Live In The Neighborhood I Consider The Gangway My Living Room! It's The First Place I Go For Reasonably Priced Drinks, The Jukebox Is Excellent, The Bartenders Friendly Yet Watchful. Yet Above All It's The Place Where I Know I'll See My Friends and A Good Time Will Most Assuredly Be Had!

This is the oldest Gay bar in San Francisco with a everyone welcome mentality. If you you feel uncomfortable around blue color workers and diversity this is not your bar. But if you have an open mind you will find the crowd fun and the drinks cheap and strong. The bathroom just had an over hall so I dont think you will find any odd smells.I love this place opens at 8am a real neighborhood bar with lots of history.one of the morning bar tenders actualy eats fire.

A bar with historic meaning that brings comfort and good times to the regulars there. Strong pours, great bartenders, and a welcoming community make this destination in a traditionally rough part of San Francisco.

An institution. Friendly little divey gay bar, drinks are cheap, and the regulars are entertaining. Worth a visit every once in a while, but not a place to try to pick anyone up. Jukebox can get interesting as the night progresses...

This "was" the oldest gay bar in SF. I has closed. I believe thatthe owner could not manage it any longer and nobody was interest in purchasing and keeping it a gay bar. Very sad day for us older gays. 😔😢😓

Cool little gay dive bar with a jukebox. Allows outside food and has attentive service so you're never waiting for a drink for too long. Also has a couplw tvs in case you want to watch sportsball or something.
