"Garrido’s Bistro was a go-to spot for authentic Venezuelan cuisine and decadent desserts. Its closure was particularly hard for those who appreciated its Latin flavors and sweet treats." - Serena Maria Daniels

"This Latin American restaurant is known for its tasty arepas, but in the winter its claim to fame is the “extreme hot cocoa.” The rich hot chocolate is served in a mug that’s dwarfed by a hulking tower that could include toppings like toasted marshmallows, cake pops, mini cakes, and chocolate drizzle. It’s tailor made for the ‘gram." - Brenna Houck, Eater Staff

Delicious food, we tried plantain nachos the guacamole was excellent. The ceviche is fresh and the lime taste is just right, for main dish I had the seafood stew that comes with rice, I enjoyed the spice balance not much of ot, but still you can feel in with each bite. At the end we had churros, it was good but they can do better with the chocolate dip. The prices are moderate, service is fast, place is clean and smells good

We came here for my birthday and it was a small little place with a whole lot of flavor. The arepas and paella were great. Everyone enjoyed the quesadillas and the waitstaff was attentive. I was disappointed that the milkshakes are seasonal and it wasn’t stated on the website. Otherwise, I’d definitely come back, just with a smaller group for quicker service.

We’ve been a few times now and each time we are blown away by the service. We feel like we’re house guests when we walk in the door. The food is amazing and unique. I usually review a menu and only find a few items I’d like to try, but this menu has endless possibilities. The house wine is some of the best I’ve ever had in Michigan, it’s pure and light. We recently got the hot cocoa tower and it was so worth it! We split it between 4 people and had left over overs. There were so many goodies packed into it with so much detail. Bonus points for being family owned and operated!

Great little spot. Not much seating but it has a nice atmosphere, great service, and great quality of food. The dishes are a little pricy but everything else makes up for it. We will be back. #staytruestaylocal

Google
Food was outstanding. Venezuelan food. We had the plantain nachos. Delicious South American take on nachos with plantains instead of tortilla chips. I had the Casablanca seafood plate. Excellent sauce and yellow rice with peas went eel with the seafood. The bean Arepa sandwich was perfect and huge. Had enough leftovers for another meal. The drinks were unique and prefect blend of sweetness and alcohol.

I wish I could give this restaurant 10 stars, because they deserve every bit of a 10/5. We have been meaning to try this restaurant for years, and I'm glad we did, because even with a 50 minute drive, we have been missing out! We prepaid for the dining experience, where you can choose your own appetizer, 2 main dishes, and a dessert , or you can get the chef's table. We are huge foodies and we love paella, and Vanessa, our waitress and co-owner, was super accommodating about letting us do the chef's table, but also incorporating things we wanted to try. 1. Started with garlic bread- it was amazing... super flavor and just the right amount of crispy. 2. Had the ceviche... delicious... filled with flavor and a huge portion. The tostones were delicious, as well, but after seeing the size of the ceviche, we laid off of those, so we could have room for the rest of our meal. 3. The summer salad was one of the best salads we have ever had... we could literally eat that all day. It is so refreshing and light, while bursting with flavor. 4. The paella was loaded with seafood and HUGE. Every bite had seafood in it, and it was delicious! 5. The steak and lamb chops were cooked to perfection. The lamb chops were some of the best we have ever had... like melt in your mouth amazing. 6. The chocolate molten cake and ice cream are a perfect dessert... many restaurants make it too sweet, but this wasn't... and the ice cream was so smooth and delicious too. We were stuffed, but couldn't let this deliciousness go to waste. 7. Even the cappuccino was delicious!!! We took a ton of food home and we can eat, so anyone that thinks the portions are small is far from our experience. The price for the experience is so reasonable for what you get, that this would be a weekly stop for us if they were closer. I'm a sucker for mom/pop places, who put their passion into their food, and this place surpassed all of our expectations! We can't wait to be back and bring all our friends!

Google
I found this place on Instagram @garridosbistro and it was everything I expected and more. We ordered the loaded fries for a appetizer (we dug into them prior to the picture) and they were great. We had the Seafood Pasta. We also had the lomo saltado. The steak was very juicy!! You will not have a bland experience here. Of course we ordered one of their famous milkshakes! We got the molten lava over a Oreo milkshake and it did not let us down. They could improve their drink selection, they offer a selection of teas, juices and canned pop. The teas are very floral which I wasn’t a fan of. The space is small and I wouldn’t advise to have a party larger than 5. Overall the experience was great and we’ll be back in the future!

Google
Okay, so I've known about this place for a while but never went because I thought this was more of a dessert place rather than a restaurant where you could have a super satisfying lunch or dinner. And gosh, am I glad we went here. Faves were the panchos (plantains and nachos) and the lomo saltado. Omg did those flavours ever hit the spot. How is it even possible for plantains to be that delicious? I don't know what kind of cheese were on those panchos but I want to order it in gallons. The beef in the lomo saltado was so tender and flavorful, I was very very impressed. We also tried the casino royale arepas and the tequenos. I understand that the arepas are supposed to be the star dish at this restaurant but we ordered it kinda late and so it arrived last so I didn't really get to enjoy it because I couldn't stop eating the beef dish but I reheated it the next day in the oven and delish! We ended our meal with the Nutella cheesecake and honestly they just execute everything so well here. They find ways to elevate flavours that you imagine you know very well and isn't gonna blow your mind and they just turn it into something that does blow your mind. Really, really impressed, cannot sing this place enough praises. Don't be like me and wait 3 years before coming here. The portions are also quite generous and so if you are hungry like right now, this is definitely the place to go.

Yelp
Great ordering experience and curbside pick up for COVID times. There is a message on their ordering system that calls out the food ready/pick up times are not shown accurately. While this is kind of confusing, I did see the message and I was able to plan my order time well. My food was ready when I expected it to be and I got a text from the restaurant letting me know. I called the number from the confirmation screen and they brought everything out to my car. Cant wait to go in person!

Samantha B.

Yelp
This is strictly a review of their Seafood Paella, which I thought was awful. I have to say that I had decently high expectations after seeing their advertisements for "authentic Spanish paella". I traveled to Valencia, Spain recently and had authentic paella at a few different places there. I even took a paella cooking class! I know how it is made and this just is NOT it. Now, to be fair, paella is actually the name of the pan it is cooked in, not the dish itself. Although this is cooked in the traditional paella pan, it is lacking all the other things that paella is (crispy bottom, saltiness, FLAVOR, etc.). I think my boyfriend summed it up best - "It tasted like a Knorr pasta sides with mediocre seafood mixed in." If you decide to give this place a try, save yourself $40 and don't get the Paella.

Samantha M.

Yelp
I am doing an updated review, my first experience here a few years back wasn't great. However, I took a few of my youth and volunteers here the other day because we happened to be in the neighborhood and things went great! They really stepped up their game as far as food, flavor and service! We got several of their best selling dishes and I would love to go back and try more! The portions are very big so you can def share plates if you would like. The only draw back is the size inside the restaurant it's pretty small and cramped. However, we got there without a reservation and we were accommodated with two tables slightly apart but next to one another which we appreciated! My youth loved the food and def would love to go back one day!

Yelp
This is an excellent spot for food, brunch, and dessert!!! From sweet to savory, it's all delicious! Be sure to take a few friends if ordering an ice cream dessert tower!! This food will make you wiggle in your seat!

Barbara Y.

Yelp
I ordered the Angel Falls bowl. It was exactly what I wanted, very fresh ingredients and our server was very attentive. It was fun to see all the unique dishes other tables ordered. I will have to return to try some of the other menu options. The atmosphere was great, you didn't feel like you were on Mack Avenue.

Amie K.

Yelp
Great good. Small space but the food and service changes small into comfy. Prices are well worth the food

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
I had lunch at Garridos today and ate on the patio. The service was great, but the brunette was SO good!

Bridget S.

Yelp
We found this place on a whim. We were visiting family in SCS and found this on Yelp. I love Latin American food and this place is amazing. The Areapa was filled with tender slow cooked meat and a nice hunk of cheese. My husband had a steak wonder wrap. I had the pabelon which came with some of the best sweet plantains I've ever had. The chicken was also tender and flavorful. I saved half the beans and rice for a lunch this week.

Leland B.

Yelp
I've been to Garrido's three times now. The food is consistently good and the service is friendly. Their drink menu is limited. Per the waiter, "we are a r bar." I ordered a "mule" drink which was good, but I expected a traditional copper mug and it came in a glass. Their signature salad is great with a sweetness matched with a tiny hint of salt and savory. The lomo saltado was good, but the steak was a little squishy compared to others I've had. I have been disappointed the past two times to learn that they're not doing their giant milkshakes anymore.

Doug V.

Yelp
Fun little place with great food and a simple atmosphere. The Arepa are popular but so is the seafood.

Jim J.

Yelp
Excellent food! Service was outstanding. Small intimate restaurant in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Nicole W.

Yelp
5 for flavor, quality, freshness, and service. Cute little place and friendly, attentive people. We like big flavors (versus mild or bland) and this hit the spot. Can't wait to try some of their dinner entrees next time.

Carrie F.

Yelp
Tried Garrido's for Mother's Day. Our family was not a fan. The food was bland, seafood over cooked and it was freezing in the restaurant, the food was cold too. It was uncomfortably cold, I went to get my winter coat from the car. We asked if they could do something about the cold air, they never did.

Carrie D.

Yelp
Delicious food, interesting menu options and always a pleasant experience dining here. We go every time we're visiting family in G.P.

James T.

Yelp
Nice food, a bit pricey, mostly just take out. If you want to reserve a larger party for the few tables they have, they want a deposit, which seems strange for a small place. Cannot fault the food though, unique to this area and very tasty.

Nora A.

Yelp
Garrido's arepas are so filling, comforting, and all around delicious!!! One of my favorite things to order are the plantain nachos and the chicken sofrito arepa with sweet plantains. Don't forget to finish your dinner with their freshly made churros with nutella dipping sauce! It is over a 30 minute drive for me but I could visit every day!! I have been twice and both times the food quality was superb. I can't wait to go back again soon!

Monique M.

Yelp
I must return here!!! This shrimp quesadilla was so good!! The fries on the side were also good. They also give you some dip to use. I chose the lime dip and that matched perfectly with the quesadillas. These were a big portion and I had to end up taking some home. The place is very small so I wouldn't recommend this for large Parties.

Paila C.

Yelp
Food was good Casablanca Seafood Will definitely visit this restaurant again. A must try

Matt S.

Yelp
just ok tried dinner for 2. We were the only ones there. By the time we left, maybe 4 tables. Just not for me

Chuck S.

Yelp
The food is flavorful and delicious. The inside is very nice looking. Anytime I'm in the area I try to stop in.

Sandra B.

Yelp
Wow! Fantastic food! Would definitely recommend the Beef Stroganoff! Excellent service!

Yelp
So, I have been wanting to dine at Garrido's Bistro for a couple of years now (the milkshakes. lured me in)! However, a few weeks ago was my first time dining at Garrido's, and due to Covid and limited menu, they aren't offering milkshakes at this time. But, there were so many positives from this experience. I enjoyed how they set up the outside dining, and still made it a pleasurable experience in the limited space that they have right outside of the restaurant. Our waitress was great! My friend and I loved her personality! And the food was good! My friend and I both ordered Quesadillas as an entree; I ordered chicken. He ordered beef. And for the sides, we ordered the Plantain Chips. The food was tasty, and had a little different type of spice to it! I would definitely like to go back again once perhaps they can offer the full menu, but I definitely enjoyed the experience, and plan to return!

Barbara C.

Yelp
We have been wanting to try Garrido's for quite some time and finally did Thursday evening. We ordered Casablanca Seafood and Chicken Sofrito Quesadillas. The Casablanca Seafood was terrible and nothing like the picture or description. The small shrimp was the only recognizable seafood, with whatever other seafood overcooked and the texture of tiny rubber bands. The quesadilla had no chicken sofrito in it unless it was microscopic and was just a greasy cheese quesadilla. The pico De Gallo was old tasting with unripe tomatoes. We were terribly disappointed, especially after paying 29.00$ for the Casablanca Seafood. We do not plan on going back. I do not recommend this restaurant if you are a foodie.

Deborah M.

Yelp
Food:10/5 Service:6/5 Adherence to nonsense: -11/5 10/5+6/5+(-11/5)=5/5 The food here is soooo good! We had the cucumber salad for an appetizer , which is very simple and tasty. I ordered the seafood ceviche with tostones. Ceviche is not super common in this area and was very fresh. Tostones are also not common and were simple and tasted similar to the ones I had in Puerto Rico. My husband ordered the lomo saltado, which he loved but ended up ordering a side of yellow rice to soak up the flavorful sauce. While our waitress was verbally very friendly, I couldn't see her facial expressions. When does it end????

Joy W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food, beautifully prepared and served with care. I ordered the bean arepa and it was mind blowing, such an incredible mix of delicious flavors. It was my first time there and I'm already dying to go back. A sign up front warns that they are short-staffed and things might take a while, but the service was great. Any wait would be well worth it anyway. Prices are quite reasonable too.

Dana M.

Yelp
Great little find! Not many options for Venezuelan food around. Our server made some awesome recommendations for authentic dishes. Flavors were all there. Can't wait to come back and try something new!

Clair Renee V.

Yelp
With my mother visiting in town I knew I wanted to treat her to something delicious. Knowingly Garrido's was fabulous! They called in an order for the Venezuelan Bowl, the Casino Burger and fires, and the shrimp dinner. I received a text alerting confirmation of the order and was told 35 mins approx. My Mum and I drove around until we got the text for rest for pick up. The order was bagged well for travel and was fresh. At home we opened our feast and once again thankful to have such a delicious home cooked meal with uniqueness. The standout for me is e shredded beef, part of the Venezuelan Paubella( sp?). I could order a bowl of just that pure beef goodness. While on the more costly side of takeout, we believe that the food more than speaks for itself, and the quality of ingredients. Support local business!

nancy k.

Yelp
This place is amazing and such a great find in the GP area. Definitely my favorite restaurant in this part of Michigan. I always make a point to dine at Garrido's Bistro when in town. Hands down the best Paella I have ever had. The bowls are amazing too. The portions are very generous so plan on bringing a doggie bag home for another full meal.

Rita G.

Yelp
Super restaurant! Very, small maybe twenty tabletops tops. We were so glad they were able to accomodate our table of eight last minute on a Saturday night. Everyone enjoyed their meal from the garlic bread to the rice and beef. Very generous portion sizes and lots of fun Latin flavors . If you are looking to try something new and unique this is the right place. This is our second time here and the second time they were out of the tres leches. :( If you are looking for dessert, their milk shake creations look amazing but I recommend starting from dessert. I could not possibly eat one more bite after our meal, in fact I took half of it home. The experience would have been perfect if they would let us split our bill by couple. We asked for that at the start of our meal and were told they could not do separate bills. At the end of the night we gave the waitress four credit cards and she refused to charge them evenly. The very sweet manager explained their reasoning and did do it for us but honestly its a huge inconvenience for our situation and leaves a negative impression of the restaurant. I hope they reconsider this policy.

Jeremy B.

Yelp
Fantastic food with great presentation. Had the extreme hot chocolate while a bit pricey was crazy good. Staff a little slow, but understandable since they are short staffed. Only other thing is they only have one beer option, but good drinks otherwise

Cosimo D.

Yelp
In the last few months I've come to Garrido's on a Sunday morning for brunch. Both times were very good. While I myself did not try the breakfast items, both times I've gone my guests did, and seemed extremely satisfied. As for me, I ordered off of the dinner menu. The first time I tried the Casino Royale, which is an Arepa (a corn based, muffin-like bread) stuffed with Angus Beef, Avocado, Latin Cheese, Tajadas (sliced plantains), and Bacon. I also added Cheddar Cheese. This was an amazing "sandwich," which I'd highly suggest trying/splitting. I also ordered the Loaded Fries (they were out of the Panchos on my first visit). These are hand-cut fries topped with ground beef, bacon, melted cheddar and guasacaca. I split this with my guest, and she loved it (as did I). Yesterday I ordered the Seafood Stew, which is a healthy portion for one person, and comes with Shrimp, Calamari, Scallops, Baby Octopus and veggies, served over rice. It was seasoned amazingly well, and was delicious AF. BOTH times I ordered the Paella for my guests and I to split. It is a saffron-rice cooked with Shrimp, Scallops, Calamari, Mussels and Baby Octopus. It's divine, and you should DEF try this dish. I imagine I'll be coming back here frequently (for me that means every 6-8 weeks), and I'll continue ordering these new favs, but will also try at least one new dish each time.

Kelly A.

Yelp
It's okay. I wouldn't recommend it. It's one of those places you leave wishing you went somewhere else to get your Italian fix. Very unsatisfactory regarding flavor. Open a cookbook if it's that hard to nail recipes.

Tim D.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and book a table at this lovely intimate Spanish, Caribbean bistro with someone special. Even if dining alone, it will be still special. Start with a Caribbean martini. Vanessa gave us an excellent guided tour through diverse menu. I can't remember the names of our dishes but we ordered garlic tostones, shrimp stew, and this fabulous Venezuelan bowl with grouper. Portions were generous for hardy plates of leftovers. We were visiting from out of town - but look forward to returning. Thank you again, Vanessa. Laura and I will be back!

Joel N.

Yelp
Food is fantastic. Service is great. But the desserts is where they really stand out. Sometimes I go after a dinner just to get a crazy over the top dessert. I also really love how intimate the space is. Large enough to bring a small group without issues, small enough that you don't get lost in the shuffle.

Liz P.

Yelp
I can now finally write a proper review of Garrido's - I went here last summer for a ridiculously tasty Yelp event, but that review went on the Yelp event page. My boyfriend and I were in the area for an influencer event (Josef's, down the street) and I kind of jokingly suggested we go to Garrido's for a milkshake after ... and he wanted to go! This was his first time there. He ordered the Reese's shake ($20), which comes topped with some cheesecake, some sort of Oreo ice cream sandwich, and a Choco Taco, among other things. Impressively, he finished about 90% of the shake, and I ate a few bites as well. We also ordered the Panchos - they're like nachos but made with plantain chips ($13), and are very good. I tried those at the Yelp event last summer too, and they are topped with guac, cheese, ground beef, and pico de gallo. Waitservice was great as well, and they bring you a carafe of sorts of water, similar to VOSS water bottles, which was a nice touch. Definitely would come back when in the area. Garrido's is not inexpensive but everything I've eaten there so far has been very tasty.

Carly P.

Yelp
Love this place! Great food - the moqueca is my personal favorite - and great service every time!

Nancy A.

Yelp
Another amazing food experience! There were 8 of us, and everyone loved everything! We did the chef's table completely this time. We had new dishes to try and the taste and presentation were wonderful! This restaurant is a true gem! I can't say enough good things about it! Too bad I didn't take good pictures this time... I was too busy eating everything

G T.

Yelp
Been coming here since the restaurant opened. The owners are just the sweetest and give personalized service. They bend over backwards to give a stellar meal. They have a varied menu to appeal to all tastes. Even my two picky kids found favorites. Can't say a bad thing about the place. That's rare... check out my other reviews. Lol Try it out. You won't regret it!

Timothy J.

Yelp
Excellent food, especially if you are looking for something a little different. The desserts are legendary

Roy T.

Yelp
Was my first visit, and really enjoyed my experience. A few in my group frequent here. Recommend and will be returning.

John V.

Yelp
The food was good, the Extreme hot chocolate was amazing! The kids loved it. I enjoyed the paella.

Paula C.

Yelp
Excellent Venezualan food. I like the way they used avocado instead of mayo on sandwiches. Try the Paella. There is a nice outdoor patio too.

Christian C.

Yelp
I have no idea where to even BEGIN! This is by far the best meal I've been to in a long time. It's been on my restaurant bucket list for a while and I finally decided to try it out. Now before I get off into the deliciousness that was the food, my only slight issue is that the restaurant is very tiny. Maybe like 10 tables and since they don't do reservations, chances are you'll have a 30-40 minute wait. They do however use a text waitlist system that will text you once your table is ready so that is nice. Although by the time you start eating you'll forget all about that. NOW, the food. Omg I wish I would've taken more photos of the menu because there was so many things to choose from. Garridos is predominately A Venezuelan/Latin restaurant. Two things I LOVE are plantains and then I love salsa and guacamole. They had a appetizer that combined both. I wasn't sure how it would taste but I'm glad I took the gamble. They were so yummy and the guacamole so was flavorful. In addition they brought us some bread and that too was warm and tasty. Then we both ordered our entrees. My friend ordered what I believe is called the Lomo Salado, which apparently tasted delectable! I ordered one of the three choices of black bean burgers and OMG, one bite in and I couldn't set that thing down. The word for this place is definitely flavorful because there was just so much going on with the bun itself, avocado, plantain and black bean patty.... so so so appetizing. Now the moment of truth. The desert. Now, I can't think of the names for the life of me but apparently the switch around very often their desert options but it's usually a combination of 5 choices of these mountains of ice cream/cake/milkshake concoctions. We were already full as it was but that wasn't stopping us. We ordered both an Oreo and strawberry/vanilla tower of heaven! That too was amazing but maybe more ice cream than I've eaten in the last 2 years! I didn't finish mine as I was for sure they were going to need a wheel barrel to get me up out of there. I will DEFINITELY be back to try more things. Amazing restaurant!

Claudia C.

Yelp
Very great ambiance, Will was a great waiter. The food omg was outstanding past our expectations . I would recommend this place and give it 7 stars if I could.

Allyson M.

Yelp
Everything was sooooooo good: drinks, ceviche, arepas. Went there for the first time last night and feel like I need to go at least once week! Staff was at tentative and really nice. Nice cozy, cute place too.

Mary M.

Yelp
This is a closer to 3.5 star review rather then a solid 3 star review. I came here last Saturday for dinner with friends. We had a minor wait for a table but nothing like we saw while we were eating. All three of us looked over the menu prior to sitting so we had an idea of what we were going to order. Our waitress was attentive until we actually ordered and then she was basically a non entity. We only ordered water to drink and we each ordered something different. The item that came to the table for free was some bread. It looked so good but being gluten free meant that I could not eat. I order the plantain nachos with the addition of grilled vegetables. When it came out, there was no meat. I had to remind our waitress once we got her attention about the meat. It took a while for the meat to come out. This made the meal get cold. Beside the inattentive waitress, the real reason for the downgrade was the lack of dessert options for a gluten free individual. Al of the speciality desserts had flour in them. And even if you removed the fried item, the ice cream had flour in them per the kitchen staff. I could not have a frozen hot chocolate because the mixture used a malt base. I was stuck with the option of either a latte or hot chocolate. While it was good, it was not anything special. I will be back if my friends want to come but this will not be a place that I suggest due to the lack of gluten free dessert options.

Stacy K.

Yelp
The arepas are the star of the show here. A family member showed me a picture of this place so it had been on my list for a year or two. I finally had the chance to make it out here. The dining room is fairly small. It is simply decorated. Their menu shows that they have been on Food Network and Travel Channel. They asked if we wanted food and dessert because their outrageous desserts are not listed on the menu, you have to ask for their seasonal specials. We wanted both. I had the cha-cha chicken arepa. It was really delicious. I had the arepa fried and crunchy. One child had the bombshell arepa. It was equally tasty. The guacamole was tangy and citrusy. My other child ordered the chicken fettuccine with white sauce. The noodles were nice and al dente with a good creamy sauce. We had two desserts. We had the molten lava cake with ice cream listed in the menu and the huge strawberry shake. The cake was $10.50. It was good, but not amazing. The large shake was $18. It was an experience, very gooey and fun. Highly shareable. But having visited many dessert shops, this place was not the absolute best, the toppings tasted more store bought than homemade. The food was also pretty pricey for such small portions. The small pasta was $15 and the arepas $10 plus. That being said, I would go back and try more food. I would also try the hot cocoa or frozen hot chocolate. It is a unique restaurant that serves unique food.

Louise B.

Yelp
Sadly, the food just isn't that good. We tried three times. GP needs more interesting restaurants so I was hopeful.

Reda S.

Yelp
The best of the best, such great food and the chef is an amazing cook! Highly recommend, my husband and I have been coming here for 3 years almost 4 now and will continue to support this restaurant. We probably order take out from here atleast once every 2 months just cause of the long drive or else we would definitely order more.
