The 38 Essential Copenhagen Restaurants

"One of the city’s best burgers emerges from a working gas station. Owner Klaus Wittrup was one of the first in Copenhagen to make quality burgers from freshly ground beef cooked to order. Since the burger hype started in 2016, he’s opened several shops around the city, including a location at the airport. Organic meat (or fungi for vegetarians) sits on a fluffy potato bun with pickles and some greens, and you can add truffle salt or vinegar to your fries. Note: The restaurant is open until sold out." - Anna Norström, Gabe Ulla

Gasoline Grill | Bon Appétit

"GO HERE: for the city’s best organic burgers and crinkle-cut fries. It won’t seem revolutionary to most Americans, but wow, is it good. (Those potato rolls!) ORDER THE: butterburger, herb oil for fries, and chocolate mousse for dessert. The original location near Gothersgade is cooler, but the Indre By location doesn’t sell out as quickly. THE VIBE IS: truly a gas station with a bright-green neon sign and actual pumps. There is some outdoor seating. PRACTICAL STUFF: Open every day, 11 a.m. until sold out. Take advantage of your jet lag and go as early as you can: They usually sell out by 5 p.m. Check its Instagram page beforehand to make sure they’re still stocked. —Christine Muhlke" - Condé Nast

This is a chain, an all-time favorite burger, get the chocolate mousse if they have it as well. Do the butter burger with cheese, live a little. Also great fries!!!

Google
Their hamburgers are very delicious, made with high-quality meat. The fries are also very tasty, and the drinks are good too. It's no surprise it sells so well. In the evenings, there's a very long line of people, and you have to wait for an hour, but it's delicious and worth the wait. The restaurant only has one or two tables for dining in.

Google
Good quality burgers, but nothing that really stands out – there are plenty of places serving equal or even better burgers. That said, the atmosphere is cool and unique, as the food is prepared in an old gas station that’s still in operation (gasoline, diesel, and electric). The setting definitely adds some charm. We waited around 10 minutes for our food, which was reasonable. Worth a visit if you’re nearby, especially for the experience.

Google
Such a great place to have a burger and a drink. Especially in summer. Great burgers, fast service and great food. The Green Burger without a veggie patty is so good and fresh. The fresh sanitary napkins are a great treat after a oily burger. Organic fast food at its best!

Google
I was pretty skeptical as my family and I walked up to this tiny spot at a gas station. There was a long line but the orders were moving along at a good pace. We got two double cheeseburgers, one butter burger, three servings of fries, and three lemonades. Since our hotel was just a block away, we decided to take everything back to eat. The burgers were simple but you could really taste the quality of the ingredients. They were hot, greasy in the best way, and full of flavor. Gasoline Grill definitely lives up to the hype.

Google
The most delicious cheeseburger I have ever had. Tender meat, mild bun, combination of tastes were definitely amazing. The only disappointment were fries - too oily, overcooked, rather chips than fries. The service was perfect. The day I visited the place, there was a city wide trouble with card payments, but the staff quickly reacted by notifying that the order can made in the app. The waiting time was exactly as mentioned in the app despite huge queue. Thank you ☺️

Google
loved this cute burger spot that is an actual gasoline station. they are known for their butter burger which i loved when i could taste the butter. i would love if the butter flavor was throughout the entire burger. the service is very fast. i would recommend going earlier in the day as they do run out of meat towards the end of the day. i would suggest getting a burger and taking it to eat on the kings garden.

Google
The perfect burger: the meat is not too thick nor too thin. The beef as well salted. There was the tiniest amount of pink in the meat, which means it was cooked to perfection. The cheese was melted onto the meat, which meant it wasn’t just assembled after the fact, it was placed on the beef while it still on the grill so it could melt. Perfection. The vegetables were fresh and crisp. The dressing was unique, but delicious. I especially enjoyed the french fries which came with a Parmesan mayo dip. This was one of my favorites.

Google
Please bring your burgers to London!!! Absolutely delicious, tasty and moreish. The sauce, the pickles, the red onion… burger heaven! 11/10. Didn’t have to wait as I preordered on the app, which made the whole experience 10 times better. Definitely try if you can! Again - opposite my hotel so super convenient for me!

Yelp
Great burger! I got this after running to a nearby apotek and it really hit the spot when I was a little sick. Such a cool vibe, outdoor gas station window. Fries and lemonade also hit the spot. 10/10 junk food in Copenhagen

Yelp
Great burger almost takeout. The service is fast and friendly. There are a few family style tables outside, not great during winter. But the setup itself is pretty unique. A proper gas station with a counter. The burgers are amazing, 100DKK or 150 with a combo. We tried them all and everyone was satisfied

Yelp
The best. I didn't want to believe the hype. I figured a greasy burger would be good but this was even better. Huge. Cheesy. Fresh. Quality ingredients. So so good. We went twice and thought about going again in the airport. We went early because I was nervous they would sell out. The wait wasn't bad, with limited options the line moved quickly. We got cheese burgers, fries, and lemonades. Sat outside at a picnic table and devoured our food.

Yelp
After a disappointing experience at another location, I found out that Gasoline Grill is franchised and that I should check out the original location. I'm so glad that I did because this one lived up to the hype. I ordered the butter burger and a side of fries. The burger was cooked perfectly with a gorgeous pat of butter on the patty and the fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Service was friendly and fast with my order ready in about 7 minutes. Outdoor communal seating is available to eat your food fresh and they provide a wet wipe for your hands after eating.

Yelp
1. We saw so many positive reviews for this spot so we had to check it out. 2. For a fast food chain, I was a bit shocked by the price. We ordered 2 burgers, fries, and a drink and found it a bit expensive (it's about $15 for a burger). The burgers were good but I wouldn't say this as a must eat. 3. This location doesn't have much seating. There are two picnic tables outside. You'll either have to squeeze with others or take it to go. 4. There was also a bit of a wait for our food as well. Def something to be aware of, especially if you're hungry.
google avatar

Yelp
As an American, I didn't find anything special about the burgers. The ingredients were high quality and the menu items are simple and well executed but nothing was super memorable or worthy of the high prices. When handing me my order, they forgot my drink and the condiments I payed for, so make sure to check the bag before leaving. Wait times when I went on a Friday night was around 20 minutes to order then another 10 minutes to get the food but you can just place an order online and pretty much pickup instantly upon arrival. Worth a try but overall not worth all the hype.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
Really good burger. Got the butter burger and lemonade which are both close to 5 stars. Also had the fries and were underwhelmed. Really good quality potato but not really seasoned and that was with paying extra for truffle salt. Killer Kebab a few doors down had better fries. Also the line was long and slow moving so PRO TIP - order online instead if 7-10 people are in line ahead of you.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
If you crave a burger this is a decent place. Fries are also pretty good. A bit expensive and servings are on the small side. They can run out of food by the end of the day, so you might get there and no meat for you. No inside seating - it's just a small stand, but you can fuel up and or charge your car at the same time right there.

Yelp
The search for the world's best burger definitely continues, but makes a pit stop here at the Gasoline Grill (yes an actual functional gas station). This has catapulted into the top three easily. I wasn't even *that* hungry, but a once meticulously planned itinerary for my days in København was totally kaputt... anyway I found myself in the area between 15:00-16:00 and came here to eat. (Keep in mind google suggested it was "very busy" but there was nobody queue'd up when I was there) The burger is delicious. Must be the petrol they use to grill with. I'm joking I'm joking please don't cancel me. The fries are also good but holy moly I hope you haven't had salt in a while. Some picnic seating, but feels more like a take-away place. If I'd eaten here my first day, I'd likely have come back every day for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a fast food hamburger chain in Copenhagen serving organic beef and fries. It is really tasty for a fast food burger place. The Gasoline sauce with the fries is really good too. The fries are seasoned with the right amount of salt to make them super tasty. The place does deserve its reputation. If you are into burgers, check this place out in Copenhagen.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
I had heard of Gasoline Grill but given that I have access to good burgers at home, I wasn't planning on visiting during my short trip to Copenhagen. However, it was a block from my Airbnb and one day I was starving so I gave their hamburger + cheese a try and was not disappointed. It may indeed be the best burger I have ever eaten!

Neil M.

Yelp
The employees refused to disclose allergen information. By saying "Everything has nuts in it.". clearly a massive cover your ass tactic. Extremly disappointing.

M A C ..

Yelp
Tasty burger on a cold wet night! Finding a dry place to sit outside to eat was a challenge though.
google avatar

Yvonne W.

Yelp
As an American I take burgers very seriously and Gasoline Grill was AMAZING. I found it from Somebody Feed Phil and really enjoyed my burger. Throughout our one-week Copenhagen trip I ate here twice. The meat is so juicy and hot, and everything tasted really fresh.
google avatar

Lu-Shien T.

Yelp
Every element in this cohesive burger adds something to its final flair. Easily among the top 3 best burgers I've tasted. The original really show cases the genius of the chef who is as wise about what is not added as what goes in. Brilliant experience albeit a tad cold even while huddled under the overhead heaters. Fries are pretty normal. Go for 2 burgers.

Duncan G.

Yelp
The staff love to close at 7pm, then shrug when you pass by as they eat burgers inside.
google avatar

Jillian G.

Yelp
What. A. Find. We first learned about Gasoline Grill from Phil Rosenthal. All of the food is organic and fresh. And the burger is super juicy and filling. You can taste the butter oozing off of the bun! One fries is definitely enough for two. If I were a local, I'd frequent Gasoline Grill all the time!
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
Just a very straightforward and quirky burger joint and Copenhagen. Terrific stuff and located in the heart of the city. Pretty good value. The meat was good, I would ask for it to be well done if you can. Phil Rosenthal enjoyed his burger here and I can see why.
google avatar

Yelp
After being in Europe for 5 days this American carnivore was craving some MEAT. Mickey D's is around but looking for something more unique. Found Gasoline Grill on Yelp and it's only 2 blocks away! Score! Walking up I see a little gas station with fake pumps (I thought) and check out their menu. Nice touch to add the pumps and a lit up gas price sign. Looks real I thought. Went inside and ordered 1 cheeseburger, 1 hamburger, fries and a drink from the nice girl at the register. Prices are very reasonable by Copenhagen standards. You then go outside to wait for your order. While I was ordering a car had pulled out outside the doors. WTF I thought. What a jerk parking here. Driver got out...and...starting pumping gas. Turns out it's a real gas station! Gives new meaning to the "drive in". There was also an EV at another pump charging up. You eat outside on a rickety picnic table. Burgers and fries were great. Reminded me of a very popular chain back home. One American burger craving totally satisfied!
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Holy smokes. This place is amazing. As an American visiting Denmark I didn't really want to eat burgers but I'm so glad I did. We got lucky there wasn't much of a line. I ordered the cheeseburger no combo. And OH MY GOD it was so good. I highly highly recommend stopping for a bite to eat here. Meat was particularly amazing. The brioche bun was perfectly soft and the melted cheese held it all together. Yes. Go eat here. 2nd best burger I've ever had in my life and my mouth is watering just thinking about it again.
google avatar

Judy S.

Yelp
Best burger I've had in my life. It's a gasoline station and a burger joint. There is frequently a line, but it's worth the wait. There are also multiple locations in Copenhagen. (Rumor has it that the Noma chefs go to Gasoline Grill to satisfy their burger craving.) They have four burgers (veggie option, butter, cheeseburger, original - with lettuce and tomato). I had the cheeseburger (75 DKK) three times, for three meals, it's that good. It's not overly greasy and heavy like American burgers. The fries (25 DKK) are pretty good too, but the cheeseburger, oh man. It gets better as you eat it. My first bite was very "eh, this is okay" but I ended the burger with "I need another."
google avatar

Ray S.

Yelp
Absolutely of the coolest and most interesting burger joints ever. A few minutes away from the center of town. Mostly for locals. People fill up their cars and get their burgers to go. I tried the Cheeseburger and the Butter burger. Very simple, 4 kinds of burgers, really unique and delicious. The entire staff are really cool and friendly. According to them they always run out of burgers and you have to go early. Cool experience in Copenhagen!
google avatar

Mariana D.

Yelp
BEST BURGER EVER!! It was so juicy and the perfect meal after having walked miles around town. The flavors were one of a kind and it was fireworks in my mouth. I also had the vinegar fries and loved them even though I'm not a fan of white vinegar!! YOU HAVE TO TRY IT!!! Also we saw it in the airport and had to get another burger before leaving. Definitely met our expectations
google avatar

Trym N.

Yelp
Cool and unique location Like the burgers and the vibe - it was a fun time when we went in the evening.
google avatar

Ezgi I.

Yelp
Great place for a burger! This adorable restaurant (which doubles as a gas station) satisfied my (and my vegetarian friend's) burger craving. Note: The vegetarian burger may not be a patty (hers was asparagus!), but she still enjoyed it. I got a cheeseburger with fries, and it was great. The food is fresh and hot. Great burger, reasonable prices.
google avatar

Christian F.

Yelp
We had the butterburger and the cheeseburger as well as fries sprinkled with truffle oil. The burgers were very good and I can recommend both versions however if you can only choose one, go for the butter version (remember to add cheese!). The brioche bun is soft with a shell of crispness which just adds that oomph of greatness. The fries is probably the highlight as the staff literally drenched the fries in truffle oil so there is no need to buy extra dipping - fries and truffle oil is good enough and the mayo actually hides the taste of truffle too much. Note that they also do have a vegan burger on offer.
google avatar

Eddie E.

Yelp
While it may seem strange to have a walk up window restaurant with a gas station, that's exactly the charm. This is definitely not just a dirty greasy cheap burger joint. This is one of the best street food style burgers I've ever had in my life, and I've eaten too many burgers to count in several different countries. The "gasoline sauce" on the burger wasn't overly spicy but paired perfectly on the cheeseburger which was delicious even without this great addition. The fries were excellent and crispy and I had the Chili Mayo sauce with them which brought a pleasant kick that I loved. I'd never eat a burger anywhere else in Copenhagen.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
The best burger I have ever had ! I know I know that's a bold statement but I'm standing by it ! Seriously delicious! My husband and I both got the combo meal a cheeseburger fries and a drink we both took out first bites and let out a loud mmmmm . Just to give you an example of how good it was my husband ate his whole burger without cracking a beer now for an Irishmen that's gotta tell you something ! Lol seriously though i loved this place friendly quick service and delicious food ! Yum yum yum

Vitor S.

Yelp
This place is iconic for a reason. Hands down best cheeseburger I have ever had. And the fries were top notch as well. A must visit in the area. Although there are other Gasoline Grill locations across Copenhagen, this one deserves the priority because of the uniqueness of being, as the name says, a grill in a gas station.
google avatar

Chester C.

Yelp
I'm going to be In & Out on this review. Located near Nyhavn at the street food corner. think In & Out with fresh on the spot ground steak meat and a brioche bun. If you're yearning for a burger this is your spot.
google avatar

Mar L.

Yelp
Yummy burgers in a cool setting! Found this place browsing on Instagram and I thought it was really cool. A gas station that sells burgers (and it's still a gas station). Prices are average for Denmark, about 10€ for a burger doesn't come cheap, but they are actually pretty good, tender juicy meat and the right ingredients, no surprises or extravagance. The combo menu includes fries and a drink (for about a 100 dkk), we had a very refreshing lemonade with ginger, perfect for the hot wave in Copenhagen last week. The benches to sit and enjoy your burger outside are convenient, don't know if they stay there in bad weather as well. Sorry, no photos, too hungry to shoot! Anyhow, if you like burgers, give this one a try!

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
Great service and great food. Lemonade was probably the best I've ever had. Not a lot of choice when it comes to seating, but there's a park not too far off where we enjoyed our food.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
It was alright. The bun, meat and ingredients all seemed fresh. The fires were cooked precisely. It seems like the food depends on the condiments. Without the truffle salt/oil on the fries and spicy mayo on the burger the food would lack something. Lack of seasoning on the meat and regular seasoning on the fries is apparent.
google avatar

Thien N.

Yelp
There's a stigma to eating gas station food in the states. I was told this place was great and it was. It was odd waiting outside a gas station but there were a decent amount of people there. I had a cheeseburger with aioli and it was very good. It's exactly what I wanted in a quick serve burger. Check it out for quick eats if you're in Copenhagen.
google avatar

Christian D.

Yelp
Though this is a favorite in my neighborhood. I dont quite get the hype. of course the concept is fun but doesn't make up for the price. The Burger is good but the fries are awful.
google avatar

Kay M.

Yelp
Very delicious burger with fresh ingredients. Long line waiting outside and it's totally worth it! The ginger lemonade is ok, nothing too special. I think it's a bit too much salt on the fries. Other than that, burger is awesome!
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Wanted to checkout a grill in a gas station- definitely was worth it. My daughter, a burger connoisseur, claimed it was better than In-n-out in the US. I had the seasonal veggie burger and it was great, too! Fries were a little salty, but otherwise great burgers.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
New gem in Copenhagen - these guys are doing everything right. Great street/takeout burger, good ingredients, you name it. Hands down one of the best food options around Nyhavn and very budget friendly. As an American, this place embodies the best of Danish burger culture and brings it to Copenhagen. Will be a regular for sure.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
Such a great burger it lived up to the hype for me. Doubt I'll ever be in Copenhagen again but I'll always dream of that burger, don't miss it if your in Copenhagen.

EJ G.

Yelp
After being shooed away from A certain much hyped foodie resto (not Noma, BTW) which had snooty staffers and incorrect info published on yelp on when it was actually open for business, it was so nice to go to Gasoline Grill for a classic and really satisfying burger with perfectly done fries - one of the very best burgers I have had in a long time, with nice staff and fun setting (caveat- it's ideal on a sunny summer day) Sometimes the simplest formats make for the best local food experiences -
google avatar

Carsten N.

Yelp
Tried it a few times now, because of the famous tagline "best burger in the world". Didn't quite live up to my expectations. It's decent.

Shengyu C.

Yelp
Best burger so far. The one in Vesterport station is also pretty good and convenient for commuters.

Brandon H.

Yelp
Hands down, one of the best burgers I have EVER had. Get the parmesan mayo to go with your fries, some ketchup too, because my goodness, everything here is immaculate.

Maria O.

Yelp
Juicy burger. Crunchy fries. Good beer. Nice staff. Good price. Gasoline sauce is a must Amazing.
google avatar

Luci L.

Yelp
Good place for a quick burger. I was surprised that this place was featured as one of the top 27 burgers around the world by Bloomberg. It's good, but I've had more amazing burgers elsewhere. The menu is pretty normal, since the burgers didn't have too many frills or crazy ingredients, though the veggie burger contains sticks of asparagus rather than a more traditional black bean or quinoa patty. The gas station isn't real (at least, it was partially blocked off to cars). One of the cheaper places to eat in a city full of expensive ones.
google avatar

Kayleigh B.

Yelp
Really love this place and have been many times! The burgers are great and the vinegar fries are some of the best in the city. 100kr for a meal that includes a burger, fries, and drink. The only thing to keep in mind is that they are only open until they run out of burgers, so a couple of the times I have been there I have been turned away because they were sold out.
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
Omg these burgers are good. Fresh meat perfectly grilled topped with melted cheese and paired with delicious fries - you really can't ask for more. I'm sure I'll be hanging out here a lot once the weather gets warmer. Hours are 11am until they run out of food so I'm sure it's packed on the weekends. I went on a Thursday and the wait was about 20 mins. That being said, it was well worth it!
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
I went here on my last day in Copenhagen, and boy am I glad I did! The burger was tasty and juicy, the bun was soft, and the variety of dips they offer are awesome. Truth be told, I ate everything. Thank goodness for the wet nap they provide you. The atmosphere is so cool. There are two benches outside, and if you're lucky enough to get great weather like me, then yay! Go early, I heard they sell out, especially when the weather is good and on the weekend. I went on a Wednesday :)
google avatar

Jacqueline F.

Yelp
We went here because it was across the street from our hotel. I was just hungry and was open to anything. Little did I know this stand/restaurant would change my life. This was the best burger I've ever had (and I do not write that statement lightly). I cannot recommend it enough.
