Traditional Trinidadian comfort food, including doubles, jerk chicken and roti, in a casual setting.
"The staff at Gee’s want to make sure you’re happy, and this means they’ll let you try almost anything on the menu, as if you’re at an ice cream shop. Can’t decide between oxtail and goat curry? Two bites from little jello shot containers, and you’ll know the clear answer is goat. You’ll have to decide on what sides you want too. We always go for the callaloo and either the mashed pumpkin or creamy potato salad. There’s not much more to the space than a handful of tables and CNN on a screen, and most people get their food to go." - Kenny Yang, Bryan Kim, Nikko Duren, Hannah Albertine, Matt Tervooren
"The staff at Gee’s want to make sure you’re happy. They’ll let you try almost anything at the counter, as if you’re at an ice cream shop with a lifetime supply of tiny spoons. Can’t decide between oxtail and goat curry? Two bites from little jello shot containers, and you’ll know the clear answer is goat. All the dinner combos at this Trinidadian spot come with rice and two sides (we like the callaloo and mashed pumpkin or creamy potato salad). You can find better roti elsewhere, but the doubles with tamarind are absolutely worth it. "The people and food at MCG Grand Cafe make us want to set Google Flights notifications for Grenada right away. This small Caribbean spot on Nostrand doesn’t have much on the walls besides a few Grenadian flags, but the very friendly staff and chef will come make small talk if you look bored. The menu ranges from jerk chicken wings to lots of seafood dishes, and we particularly like the jerk salmon with mango salsa (which comes with rice and peas that help sop up the extra sauce). Keep this place in mind for takeout and delivery, too." - bryan kim, matt tervooren
"Former employees of Crown Heights institution, Gloria’s, have opened their own Caribbean restaurant just a few doors down called Gee’s, located at 770 Nostrand Avenue, near Sterling Place. According to Brooklyn Reader, Gloria’s former manager of more than 22 years, Wayne Smith, was approached by an investor to continue the Trinidadian spot’s legacy, alongside other former employees who were out of work for a year. The restaurant will feature the same classics Gloria’s came to be known for such as rotis and curry goat." - Emma Orlow
