Best Ice Cream in Austin | Eater Austin

"Hidden just off South Congress in Bouldin Creek, this California transplant ice cream shop leans towards classics. The pistachio gelato is deeply nutty, stracciatella is swirled with rich chocolate shavings, and the fruit sorbets are tart and clean. There are also affogatos, blended espresso gelato concoctions, gelato shakes, and even gelato cakes." - Darcie Duttweiler

The 18 Best South Congress Restaurants And Bars In Austin 2024

"Hidden in a small shopping center between a Hopdoddy and Perla’s, Gelato Paradiso is one of our favorite spots for gelato in the whole city. The stracciatella is about as classic as it comes, with a rich, creamy vanilla folded around bitter strands of dark chocolate, and the pistachio packs in an intense earthiness. Grab an affogato if you need an afternoon pick-me-up, or just grab a two, three, or four scoop cone to keep you company while you stroll down South Congress Avenue. " - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

California’s Gelato Paradiso Opens in Texas in Austin on South Congress - Eater Austin

"Gelato Paradiso, the California gelato mini-chain, is opening its first-ever Texas shop in Austin. It’s found at 1400 South Congress Avenue, taking over what had been Francisco’s Salon in suite B160. The name of the gelato store appeared on the plaza’s directory, found between Hopdoddy Burger Bar and Perla’s in April 2019. The shop is now open as of early January 2020. Gelato Paradiso is known for its array of gelatos, covering Italian standards like tiramisu, stracciatella, mint, cheesecake, and even banana, as well as fruity sorbets (mango, strawberries, etc.). Then there are affogatos, blended espresso/gelato concoctions, and gelato shakes. It also offers gelato cakes." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
This place is amazing!!! If you're looking for Gelato definitely come check this place out. They have great flavors and they are decently priced. The sherbet flavors are top notch. Very smooth and bursting with flavor. You won't be disappointed with trying this place out! They also can make shakes!

Google
This place absolutely blew me away. Easily one of the best gelato spots I’ve ever been to—not just in Austin, but anywhere. The texture was silky smooth, the flavors were bold and true, and you could tell everything was made with quality ingredients. I tried a couple flavors, and each one was better than the last. Rich, creamy, not overly sweet—just perfect. The staff was also super friendly and let me sample a few before deciding (which made it even harder to choose because everything was so good). If you’re in Austin and have even the slightest sweet tooth, do yourself a favor and stop here. You won’t regret it.

Google
Every flavor I try is bold and delicious— the creamy texture CANNOT be beat!! I would wear this gelato as a face mask 😝 Highly recommend to anyone craving a sweet treat in this heat. There can sometimes be a line, and of course you have to find street parking, but it’s worth it 😜

Google
If you come at the end of the day, they might be out of some flavors, and it can be a bit pricey. But as a real Italian, I have to say this is one of the closest gelato spots to the real thing that I’ve found outside of Italy. Recommended in Austin!

Google
Ok… YUMMMM. This is definitely authentic gelato. The last time I tasted gelato this good was in Rome! If you’re in town or even if you live here this is a must try spot. Specially if you’re an ice cream lover!

Google
I’m visiting from Miami, Florida and my son took me to Gelato Paradiso on 12/21/23. It’s kind of hard to find but it’s a gem. The shop is small and clean and there are tables and chairs if you want to eat in. The prices are affordable too. There are many different authentic Gelato flavors to choose from. I think whatever your choice, it would be delicious. I tasted about four flavors before I decided to have the Pistachio and Coconut in a waffle cone. They allowed sampling the flavors too. The lady who served us was friendly and patient because we were indecisive on what flavors to get. I definitely recommend Gelato Paradiso. I enjoyed my Gelato.

Google
Lovely place to have an authentic Italian ice cream ( Gelato) 🍨. There are plenty of flavors. The prices are pretty convenient! I tried the mango 🥭 gelato , the raspberries, the lemon 🍋 and the coconut 🥥. Each of these flavors are unique and delicious 🤤. Great option to survive this summer!

Ramin

Google
Gelato Paradiso is simply fantastic! The gelato is incredibly flavorful and creamy, making it some of the best I've ever had. The cozy atmosphere adds to the charm of this delightful spot. What truly sets them apart is the exceptional service – they offer a small spoonful of each flavor for you to taste, ensuring you find the perfect one. It's a wonderful experience every time. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This is my favorite ice cream spot in the state of Texas!! They got the best gelato "panna cotta" is my favorite!

Yelp
Honestly I was biased that I did not expect this place to be this good. I love Italy. I love gelato. This place took me back to Florance. The taste of nocciola (hazelnut) is fantastic. Get a regular size choose your favorites, and enjoy life. Service was extremely friendly and nice. South congress doesn't disappoint. Ambience is nice. Great lighting and AC! It is a small store. Go get your gelato, you wont disappoint. My favorites are banana, hazelnut, lemon and chocolate hazelnut

Yelp
Had to try Gelato Paradiso after I found out it was in Yelp's top ice cream list of 2023. (47th) After sampling five flavors, I got the duce de leche and panda cotta. Get the REGULAR size because it feels like a size up anyways. They are generous with the scoops and have a friendly staff. Plenty of places to eat outside and walk around to hear live music.
google avatar

Sanket K.

Yelp
best gelato in Texas! And you get to pick 3 flavors instead of 2? The only negative is that it is on south congress so sometimes parking is a pain. But is it work coming out for? yes!
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
So sweet and creamy. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor bench seating. Cute lights outside. I ordered an italian cream & chocolate covered strawberries gelato. Would def come back.
google avatar

Ellie N.

Yelp
Ok I love this place more now. You just have to find a flavor that works for you This time I got 4 flavors for my small cup and all 4 were incredibly tasty. It hits every tastebud. Recommended flavors: strawberry, coffee, hazelnut chocolate and coconut.
google avatar

Yelp
Best Gelato in Austin. Having been to Italy and trying various Gelato places, this one is very reminiscent of my time there. I recommend getting a small cup with 4 flavors, what's incredible is that the layering of the flavors was so well done, that the flavors barely mixed with one another. Excellent attention to detail in the customer service and serving of the gelato. It's a very small shop, but very clean and modern. I reccomend getting the Stracciatella, Pistacchio, and Cioccolato Gelato and the Limone Sorbetto.

Ann L.

Yelp
We found the most scrumptious gelato shop nestled off the beaten path. While sitting in this quaint shop, we were even able to see the gelato being made in the back. Gelato Paradiso's delicious variety of homemade gelato is definitely worth the stop!

Yelp
A new Austin business to add to my best "Best of Austin" collection. This place blew the other ice cream shops I have tried in Austin out of the water (yeah technically gelato is not ice cream i know i know) It was super busy on Friday night, I walked around S Congress and saw so many people with these gelato cups and cones. I did what a good foodie must do then - hunt the place down and try it. Gelato was creamy and flavorful, they have around 20+ flavors from creamy ones: pistachio, panna cotta, hazelnut chocolate, mint chip, etc. to sorbet ones like mango and berries. They also let you try out samples. Price was about $7 for the smaller size but their size is not to be disregarded - its a hefty serving. I sample and really like the coffee and hazelnut chocolate, pistachio is pretty good too but can be a lot if you are only ordering one flavor. Line took a while to move because there were only two employees. They have one table inside and a few benches outside. Overall great spot!
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Felt like I was back in Italy enjoying gelato on a warm day. Gelato paradiso was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend. There are many flavors to choose from. Service was friendly and while the line was a bit long, it went by fast. Get your gelato in a cone or in a cup but come and treat yourself. There's limited seating inside and some seats outside. The establishment is on Congress so expect parking to be on the more difficult side.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Pistachio 5 strong aftertaste Mango 5 very ripe Banana 4 taste like fried banana Chocolate covered strawberry 4 not sorbet
google avatar

Christy L.

Yelp
Wait not even kidding gelato paradiso is now in my top three fav ice cream places. There is everything to rave about with the cone- it is so soft and chewy and I still dream about it. I got the banana and pistachio gelato flavors and both were very rich and creamy. Oh also my fiancé got the affagato and it was so fricken good. Highly recommend! The line is always out the door, but it moves really fast. The place is nestled in the busy street of soco (parking is kind of difficult) , but if you are ever in the area, definitely make your way over after dinner !
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
A really solid gelato spot! We wanted something refreshing on a hot day in Austin. The employee was super nice, and he was making all the gelatos from scratch in the back. I recommend getting a cup so you can get a max of 4 flavors. It's so hard deciding! I ended up getting the passion fruit sorbet, pistachio, chocolate covered strawberry and the salted caramel. All the flavors were fantastic and you can tell that the quality of the products used was very good. Small shop but super clean and right on SoCo. Highly recommend for your gelato needs!
google avatar

Brooke D.

Yelp
Oh my gosh this place is so good! Stopped in here after dinner and got a strawberry cheesecake cone and it was delicious. I loved the fruitiness of the strawberry puree in the ice cream, it helped balance out the heaviness of the cream cheese flavor. Also, the inside of this place smells sooo yummy from them making the waffle cones. Definitely a little pricey but I would say it was worth it :)
google avatar

Cristen S.

Yelp
This gelato hit the spot!! We found this place walking along South Congress and are glad we stopped in. We got to try some flavors and all were delicious! They also let you choose up to 4 flavors for your cup which we really appreciated as a lot of places don't let you do that! My boyfriend and I ordered the mint chip, hazelnut, and strawberry and split it as a large. It was a tad pricey but I see now why because we couldn't even finish it! It doesn't look like that much but trust me, it really is since it's more dense! The staff were very patient and friendly during our experience. We also ate it in front of the shop where the area had cute stringed lights throughout. Overall, a good stop and would come again!
google avatar

Haylie T.

Yelp
A regular gelato in a cup is $6.75 plus tax and you can choose up to 4 different flavors. I did not know that until I already ordered and paid. They have gelato as well as sorbetto which is the fruity selections. I opted for the espresso and it was very rich and creamy. Super delicious and a perfect treat for a hot summer day in Austin. Parking: very difficult to find parking around the area. Probably have to street park or paid parking at nearby parking structures.

Yelp
The gelato was really good, but the service was horrible. While visiting Austin, I was in line waiting and the rep skipped over me to help the group that got in line behind me. I mentioned I was there before the group and she said "Well I didn't see you". I even asked the group of people behind me "was I standing here when you all got here" they all nodded "yes". She then assisted me but was completely rude and giving me an attitude. A normal response would be "My apologies what can I get you". Her response "Ok what do you want" with a rude unwelcoming tone and facial expression. My friends who I was visiting mentioned they also went to this location and the server was rude to them. A photo of the rude rep with my ice cream attached. Again the Gelato is yummy but a rude negative server may leave you feeling down after. Not worth it in my opinion.

Gabriela E.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic gelato! The hazelnut one is just as the ones in Europe. 10/10 will be back!
google avatar

Bethany A.

Yelp
Gelato Paradiso is a hidden gem on South Congress. I walked into the shop and was immediately greeted and given the warmest welcome. I sampled many different options. They were all excellent. I was honestly shocked by how tasty was. I opted for peanut butter and the strawberry with chocolate options. Both were rich, flavorful, and creamy. Pricing was between $6-$8 for cups or cones. You can get up to four flavors per serving. I ordered a small cup and felt like it was a lot, and even be shared between two people. Overall: I highly recommend trying them out! I always felt that Amy's and Jeni's were overrated. If you're considering a sweet treat on S. Congress, definitely stop by Paradiso. It's worth it!
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
We went here twice and enjoyed it each time. Most recently we went here on a Saturday night after dinner to get some dessert. There was only one couple in front of us, so we were served right away. The staff was friendly and the inside of the restaurant was clean as well. As for the dessert, it was all delicious! I enjoyed both different scoops and my fiancé did as well. I am sure we will be back at some point.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
After eyeing Gelato Paradiso for months, I finally made the drive to try it out and had high hopes. We ordered five flavors to take home, along with some cones on the side. Once we got home, we were thrilled to find that the gelato was simply amazing--each flavor was rich and absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, the cones were a huge letdown. They seemed as if they had gotten wet or were somehow soggy, leaving them chewy and soft. It was disappointing and honestly felt like a waste of money. The cones put a bit of a damper on the whole experience, which was otherwise so promising.
google avatar

Lianna T.

Yelp
A little more difficult to find than the other ice cream options located direclty on Congress, Gelato Paradiso is a cut above, offering decadent gelato in a variety of flavors. Waffle cones are made on site and an open-concept "kitchen area" lets customers see the process. A perfect cap for dinner on Congress.
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
This was a great place to get a dessert! Quick service and they allowed us to try different flavors. Some of them were too sweet to me but I found that some of the others like the Chocolate Chip was much more tame. You can have up to 4 flavors in each order. Overall I would recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet treat. Ordered: Strawberry Cheesecake and Chocolate Chip
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
The gelato is so delicious. The waffle cone was made fresh right in front of us and still warm when we were served. I had Dulce de leche affogato and my son had a kids waffle cone with cookies and cream. They were both so creamy and delicious and the servings were very generous. The staff is doing the best they could with a very large crowd and only two behind the counter. it is a great location. Can't wait to go back again.
google avatar

Laure H.

Yelp
Delicious gelato? Say no more. I always go here when I am on south Congress and I always bring visiting friends or family. It's just so freaking delicious and they let you try flavors because you make the difficult decision of having to pick... only one... or 3 lol. An ice cream here always brightens up my day.
google avatar

Kirthi D.

Yelp
Best gelato I've ever had! I loved the pistachio :) it has a deep roasted flavor that you don't get from most pistachio ice creams. I loved that you could view the ice creams being made. Employees were pouring milk and cream and whisking right next to the ice cream being served. Waffle cones are also made to order, and they smell amazing. There are also several non dairy/sorbet options including a very dark and delicious chocolate sorbet. I am definitely coming back for a pistachio affogato next time I'm in Austin. Honestly think this is my favorite ice cream place ever. :)
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
My friend recommended this place as better than Jeni's or Amy's ice cream, and it certainly did not disappoint! The range of flavors was more unique, the lines shorter, and the seating more favorable in comparison to its competitors. And for less than $7, you can get a cup of ice cream or sorbet up to four flavors, which is nothing that I've experienced before. For an individual crippled by constant indecisiveness, this was a god send! The staff are fast and friendly, which makes the experience even more wholesome. I will definitely return again when I visit Austin again, and secretly praying that they open a location in Houston soon.
google avatar

Afrin K.

Yelp
Really tasty gelato! The quality was great, serving size was big, and overall happy with our choice on a hot Austin day. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Jacqueline P.

Yelp
Austin has such a great ice cream scene and Gelato Paradiso is definitely a contributing factor to that. I don't normally like to hit up South Congress but I was craving this place on such a hot summer day. I was debating between the Bacio and whatever chocolate/strawberry concoction they had. Both samples I had were delicious but I ultimately settled on the Bacio and savored every bite of it. I've had the regular chocolate and some fruit flavors before and everything I've ever had there is rich, flavorful, creamy, and doesn't taste artificial at all. The staff is always upbeat and friendly as well, and they give generous scoops.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
O-M-G! We heard in Austin that this Gelato place is good. Good? No, it is top-notch-super-duper-good! The gelato from each family member was so fresh. It was the perfect creamy, not over sweet and the flavor came through. It is a cute, clean, bright place tucked in a picturesque little shopping area with friendly staff to help with your order.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
I've only had gelato a handful of times. But this little small hidden gelato joint takes the gold. My husband agrees. Their sorbet is unreal. Everything is so creamy and rich and flavorful. The staff is always super friendly and down to earth. Some indoor seating. Great place to cool down on a hot day for a cool and refreshing and delicious snack!
google avatar

Chelsea L.

Yelp
Gelato is always good-it's creamy and there are so many flavors to choose from. I got guava and yes, it was good, but it was a lot even though I got the regular size. And the scoops are very jagged. I wish the presentation was better. They let you sample, which is nice. I also wish there was water-I didn't see it.
google avatar

Benita P.

Yelp
The gelato was good. There are tables outside. My son said it would be a nice first date. He's never been on a date, so don't take his word for it. He's 12....
google avatar

Jai C.

Yelp
A quaint little shop with only a handful of chairs and tables for you to sit at if you're trying to escape the blazing Texas heat. Otherwise, you'll have to take your chances outside lol The flavors are creamy and full of flavor - I had the mango and pistachio and each was very delicious! Definitely a nice stopover for dessert or a mid day treat if you happen to be in the area.
google avatar

Kelsea K.

Yelp
Ummmmmm..... Yum much?!?! My bestie went for the plum sorbet to special flavor of the month not too long ago and it was super fruity! The current FOTM (flav of the month) is basically an orange dreamsicle sitch with candied orange peel bits that are perfectly citrusy & sweet... I took down my take-home pint wayyyy faster than I intended...! I've been back once already, and if I can figure out how to get back without dealing with the terrible SoCo parking scene, I'll be back many more times! Luckily the 1st time I went it was a bit slow when we walked in so we sampled quite a few flavors and they were all impressively tasty! 5/5, friendly employees & clean bathroom as well!!
google avatar

Karson S.

Yelp
Best gelato in town within a quaint little store. Creamy and all of the flavors I've tried so far are excellent. My favorites are chocolate and pistachio. You can get so many flavors in one order (and the sizes look small but they go a long way). They also have dairy free options for sorbet!
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
Delicious gelato. Excellent service. Nice quieter spot away from the hustle of S. Congress Street. I had pistachio and strawberry cheesecake. Both were super good and I wanted more. My friend had a few of the fruity flavors including lemon, mango and raspberry. She loved it. Definitely stop here if you're in the area!

Eli R.

Yelp
The gelato was exceptional (I got the chocolate hazelnut), the little bit of espresso I tried was delicious and they validate parking! The service was fast. My only real complaint is the lack of seating. Summer in Austin is no joke, so if seating is taken (two small tables of campers) the gelato melted SO fast and then a gust of wind immediately blew my cup of espresso over on to my new white sneakers. The product was so good I hate how much not being able to sit inside ruined the experience.

JRam C.

Yelp
One of the best gelato in Austin , especially the mango . This my favorite ice cream in Austin
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
Overall score 4.7 out of 5 Highly recommend this place. Awesome flavors Great location Very nice staff It's a must!!
google avatar

Britney B.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place. Love, love LOVE! I've been so many times with my kiddos. Whenever we're somewhat in the area, we stop by. In my opinion, it's the best gelato spot in Austin. The observation window is so neat. Once we stopped in and caught someone making the gelato. We also met the owner once and he was a gem. Very nice. My go to flavor is pistachio. It's amazing! High recommend this spot.
google avatar

Curan C.

Yelp
So good. We were walking down SoCo and passed this shop and had to walk in. I got the peanut butter and coffee and my wife got strawberry with a cone. Both were delicious - would def go again!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
The BEST gelato I've had in Austin.. Maybe ever ! The pistachio is a MUST ! The service is friendly, and they offer samples . There are so many delicious flavors to choose from. The gelato is out on display for your viewing pleasure and not in some canister . This place has quality gelato with some interesting flavors but nothing too crazy and weird that kids won't eat . Check it out !
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Yummy gelato. My favorite hands down was the chocolate hazelnut and raspberry. Yum yum yum If you haven't tried this place you're missing out.
google avatar

Sana A.

Yelp
We stopped by here for Valentine's and it didn't disappoint. The flavors we got were coffee (delicious), cookies n cream (the best one!!) and their seasonal flavor pb&j which my husband loved. The service was great, they let you try different flavors and the ambience outside the parlor is beautifully lit and romantic.
google avatar

Kathleen M.

Yelp
I am obsessed with gelato and have certainly missed it since my travels in Europe. This was an absolute delight and I first had the opportunity to visit during a Yelp Elite Event. Obviously I enjoyed it, because I came back with my sister and later my best friend who grew up spending summers in Italy with her family! We all absolutely loved the flavors of the gelato!! My classic go-to gelato is lemon, hazelnut, or some variation of chocolate or strawberry. I was very happy to be able to mix flavors and ordered a classic strawberry, chocolate covered strawberry (a flavor of the month!), lemon, and hazelnut. They were all exceptional and featured the flavors I've missed so much! Additionally, there is an exceptional rewards program and parking is validated at the nearby garage for one hour. This place is a dream!! Now I just need a location to open up in South Austin and I'll be the happiest person in Austin! 12/10 - highly recommend!
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Super good gelato, one of the only in town. It's nice to get something different from just ice cream, and get really high quality, unique and classic flavors. Their location may seem good but it's not the best; it's kind of set back in an alley next to/behind Perla's, so even though it's on Congress, it's kind of tucked back and doesn't have great signage to advertise itself, which is disappointing since they really have great ice cream; if they were closer to the street, like Amy's next to Lucky Robot, I think they'd get way more patrons. We really liked their gelato and will keep them in mind when we're ready for some again!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Gelato Paradiso came by our apartments to provide us with some sweet cooling treats! Their set-up was quite impressive and presented well. I could see them doing well in a large catering situation. Best part of all the gelato was delish! Pistachio was my fav. Definitely will be going by their new location on Congress and using my coupons to get some more!
google avatar

Joanna R.

Yelp
I love this place! They are very friendly. There's some tables to sit and enjoy your gelato or you can go outside and enjoy. Their gelato is absolutely delicious!
