Yelp
We love the DeShantz group, so Gi-Jin was a must visit for us. We finally made plans to go during a recent visit to PGH, snagging res right after they opened online. Gi-Jin is situated in the stretch of other DeShantz restaurants right downtown, and you can't miss it with it's on-theme decor, even from outside. There is some outdoor seating on the sidewalk, but as you walk through the "curtains", you're exposed to the awesome interior. The restaurant features a large bar with seats so you can watch all the action, as well as tables on the opposite wall. The walls are adorned with super cool artwork (large drawings of various sea creatures), and the modern and simple furniture only add to the ambience. We were seated at the bar, which was perfect to get the full experience.
Now for food and drink ... their drink menu is expansive, of course featuring various gins both straight and in cocktails, but also offering sake, beer, wine, etc. My husband and I both went for the Cat's Pajamas, a gin, honey, and lemon forward cocktail. We loved the balance of sweetness that didn't overpower the gin, and it was a perfect match for our meal. So to the food / service ... when looking at the menu, we were a touch overwhelmed and didn't quite know how much food to order for the 2 of us. We asked our waitress for assistance, and she proceeded to basically list the entire menu to us, which wasn't helpful. Instead, I pulled in the recs from reading Yelp reviews, so we started off with the sashimi plate. The fish was incredibly fresh and definitely high quality, and it was fun to identify which of the types we liked best. The presentation was also beautiful! We then ordered 2 handrolls, the eel and the toro (again, based on Yelp reviews), which were excellent. While we were enjoying these rolls, our waitress started to stress us out, saying that we weren't ordering enough food and that the kitchen might not be able to prepare more dishes for us. We were pretty bothered by this comment, especially since we asked the waitress for help in knowing how much to order and she didn't really guide us. Since we weren't quite full and felt like maybe we were being cheap from that comment, we panic-ordered a few more dishes. We went for the bara chirashi (basically a poke bowl), the scallop crudo, and the mushroom and uni handroll. The bara chirashi and the uni handroll were our favorites from this portion, but everything was fresh and good. We probably over-ordered towards the end (we were both very full after we left), but we were stressed and didn't want to come across as cheap or leave hungry.
All in all, Gi-Jin is a great addition to the DeShantz restaurant group, and we really enjoyed the food and appreciate excellent sushi options in PGH. I knocked my review down to a 4-star just for the service since our waitress stressed us out and didn't guide us appropriately through the menu. I would definitely recommend Gi-Jin to any sushi fans out there, and I would love to try it again, hopefully with more guidance on how to order.
