What’s the Best Sushi in NYC? | Eater NY

"There’s something ironic about how Ginza Onodera, one of the country’s most expensive sushi spots, affords a striking view of the New York Public Library; lunch is a relative deal at $130–$180 (service included) versus about $450 at dinner. In a recent lunch service chef Takuya Kubo sent out 12 precise pieces of Edomae sushi over 90 minutes, gently torching Japanese barracuda for smoke, grating a touch of lime over akami to freshen lean bluefin, and serving everything on generous mounds of sharply vinegared rice." - Robert Sietsema

Review: Uchu Makes Old-School Luxuries Feel Tired | Eater NY

"I see Ginza Onodera as an obscenely expensive temple to raw fish that, in my view, you could eat at a few times a week and be none the worse off." - Ryan Sutton

A Sublime Kaiseki Omakase Experience at Ginza Onodera Tucked away on the fourth floor of a discreet building in Ginza, Ginza Onodera is an intimate sanctuary for those seeking an authentic kaiseki omakase experience. Owned and helmed by a masterful chef, with three dedicated supporting staff, this small yet elegant establishment exudes warmth, exclusivity, and meticulous attention to detail. From the moment you step inside, the hospitality is nothing short of exceptional. The service is refined yet deeply personal, making every guest feel like they are dining in the chef’s private domain. The ambiance is cozy and tranquil, with a minimalist aesthetic that allows the food to take center stage. The kaiseki omakase menu is a journey through seasonal excellence, with each course meticulously crafted to highlight the purity of its ingredients. The broiled broad beans start the meal with a delicate balance of earthy and natural sweetness. The sashimi selection is pristine, showcasing the finest cuts of the day. The cooked puffy fish is an elegant and rare treat, followed by the taraba crab with minced soy, which offers a luxurious depth of umami. The highlight for many is the Kagoshima M5 Wagyu, a melt-in-your-mouth masterpiece, rich and indulgent yet perfectly balanced. Just when you think the meal has reached its peak, the puffy fish boiled rice provides a comforting yet sophisticated finale to the savory courses. And to close, a gigantic, perfectly ripened strawberry, a simple yet strikingly sweet end to an unforgettable experience. Ginza Onodera is not just a meal—it’s a culinary performance, where every dish is an artful expression of Japanese tradition and precision. Whether you’re a seasoned omakase connoisseur or new to the world of kaiseki, this hidden gem in Ginza promises an evening of gastronomic delight that lingers long after the last bite. A must-visit for those who appreciate Japanese cuisine at its finest.

All good were prepared by the female owner. Sashimi and fish was fresh. Would be more exiting if there is any meat dish in the course.

Yelp
First review of 2025, let's give it to the 5/5 omakase experience in Ginza. Sushi Ginza Onodera, from Ginza to the world! This place was on my list, and it was literally only two minutes walk from my hotel, not to mention it was highly recommended by Philip T, I made the reservation 1.5 month in advance. Service: (5/5) there was a hostess waiting downstairs that helped us finding the place so much faster. From the start to finish, the chef was friendly, professional, and informative. Unlike the service I got in Sukiyabashi Jiro, It was a great experience in Onodera. Ambiance: (4/5) its pretty traditional setting with 8-10 bar seats and couple tables on the side. The environment is business casual. I would dress properly. Don't come here with shorts and hoodies. Food: (5/5): we enjoyed all the fish. Our favorite was toro, medai and uni. The tamago was unbelievable. So delicious. This is the place we will be back and highly recommend to our family and friends. Thank you chef 田中! Tip: if you can't make it to Tokyo, there's a location in L.A!

Yelp
What a place to visit! The chefs here were super attentive and I had a great time interacting with them. Plenty of jokes, learning about the different fish/food and even interacting with my fellow guests all added up to a great night. The food was amazing! It was so fresh, they cut a live squid and hairy crab in front of us. Great omakase menu! Also a quiet location. Somewhat tricky to find, but there is a lady outside that is very friendly and very helpful.

Yelp
Good quality of food and service; order everything on iPad and they offer different languages on iPad to make it easier to order. We didn't make reservation and came a little before the dinner rush and waited for about 30 mins but totally worth it. They have three types of uni and I absolutely love their tuna and scallops as well! Their steamed egg was also excellent! Hard to beat this quality with the price! We spent about 150usd that amount and quality of food could be causing us double in the states.

Yelp
Overall for the price it's worth it. Staff was very attentive and atmosphere was casual but classy in an old school clean vibe. Food was fresh and tasty and made with great care.

Yelp
I had known from my friends regarding Sushi Ginza Onodera. Living in Los Angeles, I'm very much aware of the 2-star Michelin restaurant that serves amazing omakase, at the rather expensive price of $400 a person, in West Hollywood. I decided that $400 was just slightly out of my price range, and instead I went to the original Sushi Ginza Onodera in Ginza. I made a reservation months before using their Japanese website. The staff there were super nice. As far as I could tell, it was counter seating only, which I prefer with sushi. My room had a small counter with maybe 8 or so seats. Our chef was super kind and accommodated my low level Japanese skills by speaking to us slowly in Japanese. We ordered the nigiri sushi omakase course. I did not know all of the various cuts of fish, but they were all super amazing and fresh. Prior to the nigiri, we were served chawanmushi with crab and Japanese yam. It was amazing. Some of my favorite pieces included the shrimp (freshly prepared), the Hokkaido uni (super creamy, melted in my mouth), the maguro tuna, the scallion and tuna nigiri, the chuutoro, and the clam maki. Everything was super fresh and had a soft, light texture. For dessert, they served us a super fluffy Castella style tamagoyaki made with Japanese yam, as well as houjicha and matcha flan. The tamagoyaki was unlike any tamagoyaki I'd ever had and was absolutely divine. The matcha flan was a perfect combination of sweetness and mild bitter matcha flavor. This is easily the best sushi I've ever had. The price point is significantly better compared to the United States. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
*disclaimer: this is the review for their casual stand up sushi dining next door to the original location! We couldn't get a reservation to Sushi Ginza Onodera so was walking down the street to look for another sushi place for dinner and lucky ran into their causal sushi dining next door!! We walked in without reservation around 5pm (Tuesday) and was able to get a slot for two right away. We ordered from our phone and the experience was wonderful! We opted for 10 piece Omakase with some more extra hand rolls. The quality was superb and left us wanting to order more even through we got full. The chef spoke a bit of English to let us know what we were eating. The price was reasonable for two. With 4 drinks and sides + two 10 piece Omakase sets came to about $160 USD. What a deal!!! Wish it was this reasonable in the Bay Area..

Yelp
This was my 2nd time visiting Sushi Onodera GINZA and it was even better than the first! I visited September 2023 and again November 2024. The quality of fish was amazing. The attention to detailing from the service staff and the sushi chef is always consistent and top notch. The sushi chef were so fun to talk to and we learned so much about sushi and sake. 100% coming back here when we're back in Tokyo. *Make sure you ask for bar seats when making reservation.

Yelp
Highly recommend. We went for lunch. Space is warm and inviting- service is attentive but not invasive. While the staff cannot all speak English fluently communication is not a challenge. The set lunch set menu is very reasonably priced considering the quality, presentation and freshness of the nigiri. Rice and fish sizes are individually tailored to your preferences. Compared to the west holly wood and ny location this place is a bargain - taking into account where the yen usd to trades at. Limited seating- no trip to Japan is complete without a stop here.

Yelp
Our omakase was great and consisted of several courses over the course of 3 hours with 7 people. Per our chef, courses are seasonal with occasional variations. The chefs worked tirelessly for two groups of people (one with 7 people, one with 6). You could tell the ingredients (caviar, uni, and great cuts of fish) were pricey. Our meal was 60,500 yen ($399 USD) at the time of our review. Our omakase included: 1.Sweet sea bream 2. Tilefish with vegetable and wasabi 3. Flounder with roe and marinated miso, dried fish powder 4. Pickled Kazunoko fish roe 5. Warm Swordfish. Sweet potato and radish 4. Uni and squid cut into "pasta" like noodles, topped with caviar 5. Hamachi (yellowfin) 6. Striped jack fish 7. Fried sea bream 8. Red snapper Cured with konbu 9. Seven spice Sardine 10. Soy sauce marinated tofu 11. Squid with salt and lime 12. Chuutoro 13. Raw and boiled shrimp 14. Hagashi tuna otoro 15. Marinated fish (Kotoro?) with marinated vinegar Tokyo style 16. Flat clam 17. Uni two different ways 18. Tamagayagi, Japanese omelette 19. Hojicha 20. Miso soup during part of the meal 21. Dessert: coconut pudding with matcha sauce My tummy was bursting by the end of the meal. My favorites were the seven spice sardine, the uni pasta and the uni sushi. Was it worth it for the price? Yes! Would I go back? Probably not. Two bites out of the many were amazing and you could tell the ingredients were expensive, but overall I couldn't help but feel slightly underwhelmed with the taste as the palette was overall pretty mild.

Nicholas R.

Yelp
When we went to Tokyo, Omakase was a must try experience. This restaurant fulfilled all of my expectations and then some. The chefs told the name in English of every piece of sushi we had. The lunchtime atmosphere was great and very calming. The uni, raw shrimp, and sea bream were the most unique pieces. The three different types of tuna were excellent. Must try!

Yelp
We ran into this place due to an Instagram post. What a great place to eat!!! Our sushi chef Sam spoke great English and it was easy to communicate with him and the staff. Can't wait until I return back. The service was excellent, the fish was fresh and I got to eat stuff I haven't eaten in California!!!! Thank you Sam and staff for the great service!!!!

Yelp
Maybe sushi hits differently for others...for me it may be the most overrated cuisine. I mean ive had bad sushi and i have had good sushi. Is there a difference in the fish quality? OFC. Is the concept basically the same though? For me yes. I do not feel sushi is elevated in anyway. Sushi rice, fish, wasabi, and soy sauce....on occasion you get a lil smoke, torch, citrus. Nothing to really elevate imo. That being said just becuz its not my cup of tea doesnt mean others in my party didnt enjoy it. We came here as a party of 6 an everyone enjoyed their omakase aside me. THe chefs were interactive and very nice. The sake selection was tasty. Ambience and service was top notch. I would recommend going to the lunch meal. I feel you get the same quality at a fraction of the price.

Yelp
The experience of Onodera was something genuinely personal, sense provoking and authentic. It felt like coming to visit the home of these amazing and kind people, being given the attention and love alongside every single dish. Visited here with a last minute reservation opening based on recommendation of a fellow Yelper, Yasushi. Going through the lights and hustle of the Ginza neighborhood, Onodera is a bit of a speakeasy of restaurant scene, a place known by those who are seeking the very best that the sea has to offer. Going through a dark alley, one finds a dimly lit door with a very small restaurant with minimalistic, traditional and high quality design. Don't be confused, this is exactly the experience that will alter any prior expectations about what sushi is. There is no menu (traditional omekase style) and the chef simply asks what you like and what you don't. For us, the answer was simple, feed us anything you want. Through the entire dinner, we had Chef Shinpo (hope I am spelling this right) serving us. Such a pleasant person. Each dish was the best sushi one can ever get. They work with best fish vendors from Hakkaido to get unparalleled quality and interesting preparations. With seating space for less than 10 people in the whole establishment, there were literally more people working to craft our food than customers. It was paramount. Dishes included mantis shrimp being prepared fully in front of us, sought after cod roe, born raw and seared, monkfish liver, golden eye snapper, horse mackarel, soft shel crab, various types of tuna and many more. Each was prepared in a very unique style, taking time and attention to every cut and garnish. Fresh wasabi was spectacular as well. The bill for two came out to half a Grand with a bit of sake and beer, yet every second of this experience was worth it. It is essentially having Japan's best sushi chef's preparing a personal meal for several hours and telling the story of every dish. Can't even put a price on that, just don't go expecting the best of the best on a tight budget. Simply spectacular evening!

Yelp
exquisite. there's a branch in beverly hills back home, but i'm not sure that experience would be as memorable. as i understand it, there are multiple levels and seatings at this omakase seating. each level has about 10-12 seats. we came to celebrate one of my best friends' 40th birthday here and were a party of 5. the 12 course omakase lunch menu ran about 12000 yen per person and was completely worth it. the level of service and food was supreme. totally enjoyed sitting and watching the sushi chefs at work carefully crafting each dish. even the ginger was off the hook as it was freshly pickled and sliced before the meal. i personally enjoyed the bonito the most, but everything was exquisite. our sushi chef carefully flambeed and criss cut each sushi piece to ensure that each piece of sushi had the perfect texture, chewiness, or taste. i enjoyed a few rounds of nikka whisky with my sushi. if you're budget conscious, opt for lunch over dinner and make a reservation a month or two in advance! big thumbs up.

Yelp
Omakase is so much more affordable while vacation in Tokyo!! I've been wanting to try one of their restaurant in US but since I'm in vacation why not their main store !!We enjoyed our dinner, everything was fresh and the staff was knowledgable n keep us entertain !! They do speak some English which was a big help!! Worth the splurge

Yelp
As one of the top sushi spots in Tokyo (with Two Star Michelin outposts in NY and LA), it is hard to go wrong at Sushi Ginza Onodera. Located close to the Kabuki theater, it is centrally located in a modern space. We focused mostly on sushi, although many of their courses are typically sashimi. They were happy to accommodate all of our requests and clearly wanted us to have a great experience. The fish is of the highest quality and extremely fresh. Each item was prepared exquisitely. Looking forward to trying their New York sushi bar.

Yelp
The entire experience at this branch of Sushi Onodera was fantastic! The staff was extremely kind and welcoming, with the sushi chef making jokes with us and making a personal connection. I was excited to learn he will be moving to the NYC location in February, so I may go see him there! The sushi was wonderful. Very fresh, and particularly the sea urchin and beef were incredible. All pieces melted in your mouth. For the price, lunch was a great option (I got the larger lunch meal, ¥10,000). Also had a sake which was quite large for one person and a reasonable price (¥1,800). Highly recommend, especially because the staff was so warm, friendly, and inviting! You can easily make a reservation on tablecheck.com as of the writing of this review.

Yelp
Reservation is easy to make online. We picked the omakase we wanted while we made our reservation 2 months ago. We chose 12 pieces sushi omakase for lunch. The omakase ranges from 8000yen to 13000yen for lunch, and 25000yen for dinner. The restaurant is easy to find, and it is within walking distance from all department stores in Ginza. The whole restaurant has 8 seats only, so I made my reservation ahead of time to secure my seats. The chefs are young and they speak English well. One of the chefs has studied in UC Davis. All sushi are fresh and delicious. The most impressive one is the throat of a fish which I forgot the name of. My husband likes the tiger prawn. The chefs showed us photos and ingredients before they made the sushi so we knew what we were going to eat. It was a very pleasant lunch. It is totally worthy it for 8000yen per person. For the same quality of omakase in Los Angeles, I have to pay at least USD150 per person. I am still thinking about the omakase even I have left Tokyo for more than a week.

Yelp
Wow. Blew away my high expectations and then some. The quality of the sushi and the expertise of the sushi chefs were bar none. Everything was seasonal and pieces of seafood that this jaded sushi lover had never had. The atmosphere is basically a frat party on steroids the whole night. Amazing amounts of alcohol being served and bought for between the very generous and drunk Japanese clientele and the chefs and the service staff. A complete stranger bought me this super rare expensive bottle of sake for no reason. It was just a loud happy party all night. I genuinely feel that it's a bargain for what you get despite the &300 per person charge. One of the most fun and delicious meals I've ever had. Forget the upright Jiro sushi. Come here and have the time if you're life.
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
We came for lunch which is pretty reasonably priced for the quality of the experience/quantity of food. We did the 10000yen option, which includes 15 pieces of seasonal nigiri along with chawanmushi (app), soup and dessert. Reservations are easy to make online, and the restaurant is pretty responsive by email. There apparently was an error and they didn't have enough bar seating to accommodate us despite the booking system saying it did. They ended up opening the owners room and effectively giving our group of 4 a private dining experience. This was a pretty awesome accommodation by the restaurant and was greatly appreciated by our group! Overall, I thought the sushi was delicious (pretty standard fare- nothing crazy innovative but so good if you're craving traditional solid sushi pieces). Five stars is really because of the sushi chef. He spoke broken English but still somehow managed to be super attentive to our questions. He was also a ton of fun, which was a nice change of pace vs more serious Japanese omakase options.
google avatar

Brent L.

Yelp
Mind blown. The service is incredible, and the sushi is like nothing I have experienced anywhere else in the world. Cost was around 400/ person USD. More than I thought it would cost, but I'd do it again.
google avatar

Arthur M.

Yelp
Perfect! Nothing else then perfect. As ususal in this kind of deluxe sushi bar the "path" is mostly depending on daily market availability. Top of the top the cod stomach. Not to be missed. Consider the fix price (high) but worth any cent

Yelp
While staying in Tokyo, my fiancé and I wanted to try Sushi Ginza Onodera. In planning this visit, we booked our reservation almost 1 month ahead of time. We took the Hibiya line to Higashi-Ginza and walked about 5 minutes to our destination. The restaurant's decorations are very reserved. The sushi bar is solid wood with an unobstructed view of the chef's. We were very fortunate to be served by the head chef. The food was fabulous and the service outstanding. I could go on and on about all of the dishes, but it would best if you experienced it for yourself!

Juliet M.

Yelp
I was able to get reservations at this restaurant by my hotel. I had such a great experience at this sushi spot. We had chef Takana and he was so awesome! They have three different meal options to choose from a 10 piece, 12 piece and 15 piece. I chose the 15 piece one. The restaurant fits only 10 people at a time. The fish was extremely fresh and delicious here!! Really awesome experience!

Angela L.

Yelp
I got the chance to try this place on my last full day in Tokyo without reservation during lunch. Great, traditional, simplistic atmosphere, with the most friendly staff. I don't speak Japanese, and when the chef couldn't name a fish in English, he brought out an iPad from the back and google translated it for me. With limited knowledge, I told him I've never heard of it. So he then pulled up a picture and showed it to me. Small gestures like that sets a restaurant establishment apart from others, in my opinion. Up until my recent trip to Japan, I never really liked raw fish. I'd eat spicy tuna rolls occasionally but never sushi or sashimi. My dad is also a sushi chef himself, having picked it up from Japan and worked at a high-profile seafood restaurant in NYC for over a decade. But I never TRULY enjoyed raw fish...until Japan. Everything is delicate and not overboard - so that you could actually taste the flavors. The proportion of rice to fish is perfect. Even though I'm not stuffed like I usually am after eating a burger, this is the type of food/culture experience that everyone should try at least once. My only thing was that fatty tuna wasn't in the chef selection. Really wanted it and was a little disappointed when I got to the last sushi and that wasn't it.

V F.

Yelp
The BEST sushi the four of us have ever eaten! A cosy atmosphere with three itamae-san's preparing the daily offereings to nine guests. Attentive staff refilling tea (Nine cups of tea? Nine different cups!), removing dishes or serving a top level of nama that we've never tasted before. Have had many, many glasses of nama biru over the years but nothing of that grade. Kubo-san, our itamae, explained what part of Japan our seafood was sourced from and how to or in what order to eat it. We ordered the seasonal set for lunch ($130pp) which started with chawan-mushi, an egg custard soup and traversed through a myriad of awesome sushi. Higashi-Ginza, exit 4 will put you a 2 minute walk from the restaurant. Sushi Ginza Onodera is a: DO. NOT. MISS!

M D.

Yelp
You can read about the high quality of the sushi in the other reviews, believe all the hype. I went for the sushi lunch, and want to tell you about the service, it's devine and something happened to me that left me speechless. I do not speak Japanese, but the chef did his best to communicate, even asking fellow chefs to translate for him. He initiated the conversations, which is not common. We had a tiny talk through Google Translate at the end. What caught me as unique was that he greeted me to the exit, not the hostess, handed me my umbrella and came out with me to the street. Asked me to make sure to come back again and offered me to shake his hand, which is most unlikely. He then stayed in the street waving to me goodbye. I kept walking down the street and in the corner I turned around and he was still waving effusively with both hands. A block away I had to stop, I had to think, I had to take everything in. It struck me to the very core. All future meals will be weighed against this one.

Brian M.

Yelp
The sushi was the most amazing thing my wife and I have ever eaten. The sushi chefs here are the most amazing chefs and make you feel so welcome. Go to this restaurant!! Best restaurant ever.
