Gogyo - Review - Gramercy - New York - The Infatuation

"New York has many popular styles of ramen, but kogashi, a scorched miso or soy-based soup, isn’t one of them. That’s about to change with Gogyo, a brand from the Ippudo chain, which specializes in kogashi ramen and has their first US location in Gramercy." - Will Hartman

New ramen from ippudo

@feedyourgirlfriend

🚨 NEW Ramen Spot 🚨 Founded by ramen king Shigemi Kawahara of Ippudo, Gogyo —already established in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia—has now opened its first U.S. location in NYC. The brand is renowned for pioneering its signature ‘kogashi’ (burnt) ramen, celebrated for its smoky, umami-rich flavors. Gogyo elevates ramen by seamlessly integrating it into the realm of high-end dining. Gogyo, a Japanese term referring to the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—reflects this philosophy in both its brand concept and interior design. The space is visually stunning, with art installations anchoring the central communal table and echoing the elemental theme throughout. They’re currently in their soft opening, so the menu is limited to a ramen set featuring your choice of ramen (from six options), served with two kobachi (side dishes) and Gentile gelato—all for $38. Don’t miss: • Their signature kogashi miso ramen, featuring five miso blends charred at 572°F (300°C) to create a smoky aroma and deep, bold flavor. • Shoyu tsuke-men, a stellar rarity—chilled noodles dipped into a universe of flavor, with miso, seared pork belly chashu, and umami tamago. It’s a fantastic addition to NYC’s ramen scene. Check this place out! 📍 45 E 20th St, New York #ramen #noodles #nyc #newyork #japanesefood

The ambiance in this restaurant is something else. Ample space between tables, large furniture, and lots of wood. I really enjoyed the burnt miso ramen. The pork was outstanding. The taukemen less so, the broth was too salty. The other ramen options also liked interesting. The gelato was fine, only three flavors to pick from. The staff was attentive and gave us plenty of time for the after table. This is expensive fancy ramen. I think it's worth its price for a special occasion, but there's is very similar quality ramen at lower prices, although without the service or ambiance that GOGYO offers.

Had the pleasure of eating here and getting to try their experimental ramen. I walked in not knowing what to expect from an Ippudo sub-brand. It reminds me of pre-Michelin Star Jeju Noodle Bar; super intentional bowls with great presentation. I tried their signature burnt miso ramen which was fantastically complex. You can taste the char and richness in the broth. The noodles were made from low hydration dough, similar to those in the Ippudo tonkotsu ramen. If I had to nitpick I'd say that the bowl would benefit from a higher hydration dough noodle with a wavy texture. The prix fixe menu comes with a bowl, plus some edamame and spicy moyashi along with a gelato or sorbet for dessert (got to try both the lemon sorbet and coffee gelato, each being excellent palate cleansers). While the price is higher than the typical ramenya in NY I think for what they're aiming for and where they are it is clearly worth the cost. Will be back soon to try their shio bowl (as well as everything else on the menu). The service was great, clearly they're still working out the finer details but the attentiveness was on point and Yun in particular was a great person to talk to. The ambiance and décor were quite striking, leaning heavily into the natural wood and greenery vibe. I'll be back soon and look forward to following their journey going forward! If they keep it up I feel like they deserve to get at the least One Michelin Star. Highly recommended!

Google
One of the most beautiful ramen spots I’ve been to in NYC. We tried their pre-fixe menu, which includes two appetizers, a ramen of your choice, and a scoop of gelato to finish, such a thoughtful and satisfying meal. Everything was delicious, and the drinks we ordered alongside were equally impressive. But what truly sets this place apart is the vibe. The space is dimly lit, modern, and calming, with a large communal table that features a lush plant installation in the middle. We sat at the corners, facing the greenery and soaking in the cozy, aesthetic atmosphere. It’s like a little peaceful escape in the city, perfect for a date night, solo dinner, or intimate catch-up with friends.

Google
Gogyo by Ippudo is truly something special. Their burnt miso ramen has an unforgettable smoky aroma and a deep, rich flavor that instantly grabs your attention. The broth is bold yet smooth, and the noodles have the perfect chew — you can tell everything is made with care and precision. The restaurant has a warm, stylish atmosphere, with an open kitchen where you can see the chefs in action — the flames when they burn the miso are amazing to watch! The staff were friendly and professional, and the service felt polished but still relaxed. It’s definitely more upscale than a typical ramen restaurant, but worth every penny for the quality and experience. If you love ramen or want to try something truly unique, Gogyo is a must-visit in New York.

Google
This place is amazing!!! We tried the signature burnt miso and seafood ramens. Both were delicious each in their own right. The smoky umami of the miso was so deep rich and flavorful. While the seafood is much lighter but still so flavorful. Drank all the soup, which I normally don’t do. I want to try them all! It’s also a beautiful modern space.

Google
i wasn’t too impressed with the 2 small starters, but that’s ok because the real star is the ramen. the tonkotsu was rich with truffle and a slight seafood flavor. the pork slices were very tender. it is pretty salty though. the free appetizers are about korean banchan size, but didn’t taste like much. the free ice cream at the end has 3 flavor options, milk, lemon, or coffee. the milk was very good and light but the lemon was way too sweet.

Google
Waited 30 mins at the door to be seated on a Wednesday 7am. The restaurant was more than half empty. Waiting 20 mins for our food to arrive, didn’t come at the same time (which we didn’t mind). They provided kids bowls, plates, and utensils; which was very considerate. The 2 side dishes were spicy bean sprouts and cucumbers. The were good, but nothing exceptional. Ice cream was no good, tasted like McDonalds ice cream. The restaurant is not ready to be open yet, go when you have lots of time or not hungry. I saw them take people in, even when the tables were not ready.

Google
We came in on a Sunday night and the wait was less than 10 minutes. We were seated in the front bar area and ordered some drinks while we waited. The food was great - came out piping hot and was delicious, but the service was lacking. We saw a table that got seated after us get their food first and it took a long time for our apps to come out (almost 45 minutes). But hoping service improves once they officially open since we definitely want to try the other ramen.

Yelp
3.5 stars If you're looking for an upscale ramen, then you've found the spot. The interior is moody and dark but you can also tell a lot of detail has been put into it. We stopped by Thanksgiving for lunch so it was quite empty, and we were seated at the communal table. Overall, the food was good. We ordered the kogashi miso and the tonkatsu. The miso was a little toooo charred but the tonkatsu was very nice and the crisp adds a great burst of flavour. Would definitely be interested in trying their tsukemen next time, but if you're just looking for a solid ramen without breaking the bank I'd go elsewhere.

Yelp
The newest concept from Ippudo. We stopped by before a show nearby. They had just "pre-opened", so no longer a prix fixe menu from the soft opening. They have a bar/lounge area in front and the table seating in the back. The table seating is a mix of booths, regular tables and a large communal table with a nature decoration in the middle. We were sat the communal table (the booths were full). It was a bit dark at certain spots. They have a small hand towel that they wet for you to wipe your hands before eating. They had a basket for us to put our stuff in, which I appreciated, since the chairs are wide, which makes it difficult to put jackets over. The Shoyu Tsukemen was very soy sauce forward. The waiter informed me that you can ask for chicken broth if it's too intense. The noodles were cooked well. I would have preferred chicken (or some other meat) over the smoky pork, since it just added more saltiness to an already salty broth. I would have also liked more key lime, because I could not taste any change in the broth after squeezing out every last drop from the one wedge. I had a taste of the Kogashi Miso Ramen, and it had decent tonkotsu flavor, but no smokiness from the charred miso. It also has tiny bits of pickled ginger, which I was not a fan of. The Jasmine Iced is regular jasmine tea, so that was good. Overall they have decent ramen, but not worth the price. It was not anything special. I'm really not sure what they're trying to do with this new concept.

Yelp
Sad to report that Gogyo -- an IPPUDO project -- is a flop. Ambiance is adequate, though the music was too loud and the lights were too bright for most of the evening. They dimmed the lights after another table complained (!). Decor struck me as the poor man's EN Japanese Brasserie, formerly of the West Village. Attempt at 'hype but classy' though kinda executed poorly. Corn tempura ($14) was fine to start -- really flimsy, partial shavings of corn with flakes of salt. It was serviceable without the wow factor. We also ordered the Shoyu Tsukemen ($38) and the Yuzu Nori ($33). And, no, the noodles don't come with anything, that's just how they are priced. My dining companion thought the half-egg and the small sliver of meat were embarrassingly slight. The Yuzu Nori was equally sparse: it only came with some seaweed and two teeny triangles of tofu. Bar program here needs serious work. WEAK -- I'll say it again, WEAK!!! -- and thus overpriced drinks. OIJI MI has a much, much more solid alcohol program. The waitress recommended the Evermore ($22) even though I specifically asked for an alcohol-forward (i.e., strong) drink. It tasted like a mocktail. Really horrible recommendation, which I remarked on, to which the waitress simply shrugged. Negroni with Roku gin ($19) was mediocre. Their namesake drink, the Gogyo ($25), resembles a Manhattan but is not particularly strong either. I asked the waitress if it was gin or whiskey based, because she made a point of mentioning that it was 'gin AND whiskey'. No real answer. Product knowledge? Minimal. Service was spotty, and growing pains are not an excuse. We had several different waiters. The kitchen forgot to prepare our extra noodles (kaedama). They took forever to appear. Wait for the cheque was similarly arduous. All told, the bill came out to ~$100 per person. Tipped 14% though I felt ridiculously ripped-off. Service was especially mediocre. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed the various Ippudo chain restaurants throughout the city. I was intrigued when I saw they opened this new iteration, Gogyo in Gramercy. A quick note: despite this being the highest priced bowl of Ramen (The highest I've seen to date) I ever experienced I will try to review this as objectively as possible and not factor in my feeling that this is all overpriced. The space inside Gogyo is an upscale lounge vibe - very dark with a lot of natural elements informing the space. There is a large communal table in the center with booths and tables surrounding. It's an inviting space to slurp on some ramen without the austerity of a place private counter space Ichiran for example. From the dining room, the kitchen is visible through a line of wood posts. "Our signature creation, five miso blends charred at 572℉ (300℃) awakening a smoky aroma and deep flavor." is the description and impressive marketing for their Kogashi Miso Ramen. I was curious, but had my reservations about their intent. Miso is a probiotic. When it is added to food it is generally when its not boiling or had a chance to cool a bit so to not kill off the benefits of miso. Charring miso at 572℉ (300℃) seemed like a silly idea to me, and in tasting this ramen my assumption was correct. I didn't get any of the smoky aroma or deep flavor - my bowl looked like a black oil slick and had the same mouth feel. This richness almost bordered on a tsukamen dipping broth, which is unpleasant in a bowl of ramen. Besides salt and oily slickness the other flavor that overwhelmed the broth was pickled ginger which was unexpected so it took me a min to identify it. The tamago was flavorful and seared pork belly was tender. The ramen noodles were more towards a katamen style bite (al-dente, firm). Overall I did not enjoy this with the negatives outweighing the positives. I thought the fire-grilled scallops were a good addition until I tasted them - they come topped with tobiko with 3 to an order. Unfortunately they were pretty cold so another disappointment. Gogyo is another reason I have abandoned the Ippudo chain in recent years. I feel the quality throughout the restaurants has declined as the costs increased substantially. Its all relative, if you feel they provide a good value for the food then by all mean enjoy! Also note they are currently in their "Pre Open Episode 2" as they call it so maybe they will improve, but for me I know of too many other places to get much tastier bowls of noodles.

Yelp
We were able to walk in around 5 PM on a Friday and the restaurant was pretty empty. The restaurant is very large, dimly lit, and there was plenty of seating. The service was good, but the ramen is expensive, and the taste was just okay. I got the kogashi miso and there was a large slice of pork, but some parts of it were tough.

Yelp
This space is so beautiful, large and high ceiling with tables really spaced out. It's a cute spot even for a date night. The menu only has the package option; it's pretty pricey even for NYC for jus small bowl of ramen, even with appetizer and dessert added it's still one of the most expensive ramen in town I had the tsukamen, the flavor is just ok, the plating is really cute. But flavor was a little too much with so many different flavors. Their signature ramen also taste pretty strange. The service is really slow, there are two person serving and we waited for a long time to get the food, and long wait between each course. It takes about 1.5hrs to get out of there. A lot of wait time in between . Definitely not recommend if you are in a time crunch.

Yelp
Gogyo... most expensive/fanciest ramen in the city? The venue is nice though. Service is pretty spotty. The folks are very nice, though getting their attention after initial set up and food delivery is pretty difficult. It seems like the menu is very, very different from what I experienced at the original Gogyo in Kyoto, but it's not all bad. There are some fun appetizers, and even the ramen offerings were pretty catchy. The kaisen shio was pretty good, but the original kogashi miso was way too salty. Was honestly quite disappointed and was unable to finish it. When costs are north of $35, it really doesn't afford you the option to mess up...

Yelp
I love tsukemen, so when I hear of a place opening that serves tsukemen; say no more and I'm there. I dropped by on a random friday for lunch during their soft opening period and was seated promptly with only one other table being serviced. You could still kinda smell that new wood furniture smell and you can tell they really put alot of thought and money into their interior decor as it was really nice. I ordered their tsukemen (surprise surprise) and my stomach left super happy. Noodles were perfectly chewy and the right thickness for the thick hot broth. Appetizer it came with was delightfully refreshing for the palate. Will be back to try their hot ramen!

Yelp
They don't sit incomplete parties, even if you're the second group to arrive to an empty restaurant. I have been here previously when it was another Japanese restaurant. The cold dishes came out rather quickly, which one would hope, but the ramen itself was a very long wait after the cold dish. It felt like close to 30 minutes before I ate the main course. I thought it was okay, like didn't blow my mind. If I would have to wait to eat this, I definitely wouldn't have been very happy. I would come back once they bring more items to their menu. I don't want to write them off completely, but if I have to wait to try their other stuff, I probably wouldn't do it I don't like to wait in line for food and if I do, it puts a higher expectation and I didn't have to wait for this food, so giving it three stars.

Yelp
Met up with friends at Ippudo's newest concept - art of ramen. As per their website, the name is balancing the 5 elements (wood, fire, water, earth, and metal). The menu states the cycle embodies restraint, harmony, and equilibrium. They opened in late September 2025 and still in their soft opening phase. As per the hostess, the restaurant will have their grand opening at the end of the October 2025. In the front of the restaurant, there is a bar and waiting area for you to wait for your party. Your full party needs to be there before the host will seat you. Be careful of the low sofa, it's so soft that it's difficult to get back up. The menu is limited and prix-fixe at $38. - It comes with 2 kobashi (small dishes) - our dishes are cucumber salad and a spicy noodles. - Choice of 6 ramen - Dessert: chocolate, lemon, milk (vanilla) The cucumber salad was delicious. The noodles were a bit too spicy for me. I was curious about their signature dish charred at 527°F (300°C) soup. It was tasty though the broth was a bit greasy for me. I decided on the lemon gelato, which is refreshing. Surprisingly, I was so full from the whole meal. One thing the music in the dining hall is pop rock though it's extremely loud in the bathroom (ear splitting). Go check it out for yourself.

Yelp
A group of us was looking for a lunch spot on a Sunday. I came across Ippudo on Google maps and was confused when I saw Gogyo in lieu. Turns out Gogyo is part of the Ippudo group. The map isn't updated to say Gogyo. In any case they had seats available so we decided to give it a go. The space is really gorgeous - I didn't expect it at all. The bar at the front is nice and the dining area - which is at the back of the restaurant was very impressive. The restaurant offered a prix fix menu - $38 for an appetizers, a bowl of ramen and a gelato. There were loads of ramen to choose from and extra noodles were charged at $5 each. Our group ordered different types of noodles and all were very tasty. I did make a mistake where I accidentally tipped out a lot of pepper on to my ramen bowl as I didn't know how the container worked. The waitress saw what had happened and promptly offered a fresh ramen bowl. I politely declined as it was my fault but she went ahead anyway which was just exceptionally nice and thoughtful. It really showed the restaurant cared. The whole ambience and experience here was really great. I look forward to coming back here again soon, this time I will avoid the pepper garnishing.

Yelp
Part of the Ippudo group, Gogyo is known for their Kogashi Ramen. They have locations in Hong Kong and elsewhere but this is their first US location. They currently only serve a pre-fixe menu for $38 as it's their soft opening. The pre-fixe included cucumber and bean sprout salad. They were fine, standard accompaniments, with a hint of spiciness. The Kigashi Miso was delicious, noodles well made and chewy, broth was rich and flavorful, pork belly beautifully cooked and egg deliciously yummy. Definitely the highlight ramen of the place. The Kiwami Tonkotsu was decent, still with a decadent broth but with more variety in toppings (including pork and scallop). It's a bit more truffle flavored. The restaurant itself is nice and service is decent though a bit less attentive.

Yelp
Small menu, quick service, beautiful interior. Honestly a great experience beginning to end. Extra noodles for $5 if needed.

Yelp
The decor is gorgeous and the food is delicious. I got the shoyu tsuke-men and the texture of the ramen was perfect. Although I had a great meal here, I don't know if I'll be back due to the limited menu (only 6 ramen to choose from) and relatively high price for ramen. The gelato was also quite disappointing.
google avatar

Jasmine W.

Yelp
It's fairly new but the price point is not worth it. I do not care about the side dishes. I just want a good bowl of good ramen. Broth is rich but dissatisfied with only 1 bite of the scallop. Service is above average. I don't want their rating to drop so I give them high rating because they are new. All the best!

Yelp
The four star is definitely for the food. Came on a Friday night for a party of two and we didn't wait long probably 10 minutes for a table. The ambiance of this place feels like you're in a club while you surp on your ramen and sip on your cocktails. I ordered the kiwami tonkotsu and the black truffle broth was delightful. For a $38 dollar prix fixe menu, you start off with a cucumber salad which was refreshing and had a great garlic sauce. Also you get seaweed salad. Then you get a good portion of the ramen of your choice. At the end they serve you gelato which comes in flavors of coffee, milk cream or lemon. I enjoyed my ramen from the noodles and the broth. Now let me tell you about the service. Our waiter gave up on us, we didn't see him till the end. He got my order wrong, we didn't get refills of our water. He just left us hanging. The only part he got right was when it was time for the check.
google avatar

Wai Chi C.

Yelp
Found this new ramen place from Insta Ad. The wait time is a bit long but the wait is totally worth it. The ramen was very good especially the tsukemen. The noodles were chewy and not too hard nor too soft. It's so hard to find a nice tsukemen place in NYC. You get two salad appetizers and a gelato for the prefixe menu. The dressing was sooo good. Gelato was ok.

Yelp
I was here during their soft opening - everything was delicious! The staff were kind and attentive. The ambiance was awesome - I can't wait to come back when they're in full operations. My only regret was not including pictures -- I guess I'll have to go back! :)
