The Best Pizza Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"Price: $$ Rudyard’s has served Detroit-style pizzas for years, but now Houstonians can get a wider variety of daily at Gold Tooth Tony’s Heights, Montrose, and Bellaire outposts. Sink your teeth into the thick dough that’s a delightful cross between focaccia and sourdough, and revel in the different toppings and combinations. The 181 Heights — an ode to the now-shuttered Pi — is loaded with arugula pesto, almond, chili flake, lemon zest, and fennel pollen, while Sebastian’s Big Idea is a cheesy and fun combination of Spam, togarashi roasted pineapple, and furikake seasoning. You can’t go wrong with a more classic pie like the pepperoni. Be sure to try some of its “not pizza” items, like its pizza tots or General Tso’s chicken wings with a spicy ranch. Know before you go: Chef Adam Bitner offers also offers a Houston-style pizza, which is a delightful fusion of New York and Detroit-style pies." - Brittany Britto Garley

3 Houston Restaurants to Try This Weekend: May 30 | Eater Houston

"A go-to for Detroit-style pizza that balances a pillowy focaccia-and-sourdough base with satisfyingly crispy edges and generous lines of tomato sauce. Diners can build their own pies or choose from signature combinations ranging from classic pepperoni and cheese to indulgent creations like the Mac Attack is Back (macaroni and cheese with bacon). The Detroit Supreme layers meats and vegetables, while Sebastian’s Big Idea plays sweet-and-salty with Spam, togarashi-roasted pineapple, and furikake. The menu also features doughy garlic knots, pizza tots, and wings served with two styles of house-made ranch (listed as the Nectar of the Gods). The pizzeria was originally founded by Anthony Calleo, though he is reportedly no longer the owner or involved with the business." - Brittany Britto Garley

Where to Find the Best Wings in Houston | Eater Houston

"Pizza and wings often go hand in hand, and Anthony Calleo makes sure it’s an option at his Detroit-style pizza joint (at the Bellaire and Heights locations — sorry Montrose). Enjoy saucy wings coming in flavors like classic Buffalo, garlic parmesan, NS General Tso’s, or opt for the dry-spiced wings that are best dunked in Ranch or blue cheese dressing." - Brittany Britto Garley

Google
If you read my review about the Gold Tooth Tony's Heights location, you found a pretty glowing one. This one, not so much. So the first and foremost thing to know about the Gold Tooth Tony's Montrose location is that it's inside of Rudyard's. And there is NO way of knowing that from the exterior. I myself only found out from Yelp reviews. So, that actually plays into the most important aspect of this review. See, when it's a standalone restaurant, you have employees that represent that company and (ideally) deliver excellent customer service. Here, it's different. You order from the bartenders, who obviously work for the bar and not Gold Tooth Tony's directly. I went on Halloween afternoon right after work so it's not like the place was packed. And I only went here instead of the Heights since it was so much closer. I stood at the bar for literally 5 minutes as a bartender did...well something...at the register before telling me the lady next to her would help me. And that took another few minutes. So I had already spent nearly 10 minutes here without any help and it didn't seem like they would care if I left or not (I almost did). My order was taken by the 2nd bartender who was at least a little nicer (and acknowledged my existence unlike the first one!) I ordered a Detroit Style pizza, a 12" Houston style, and a Caesar Salad. At no point was I asked if it was for there or to-go, but one would assume a guy wouldn't sit there and eat all that food there by himself...unless I just look THAT depressed or like I hate myself that much?? So the first bartender (the one who had originally ignored me) brought out the salad to the table where I waited and I had to tell her that it was a to-go order. She seemed upset, even though, like I said, NO ONE had asked me beforehand. And she was not even a little upset, she was glaring like I had just shot her dog and walked over its cadaver Allen-Iverson-over-Ty-Lue style. But I digress. In total, I waited about 35 minutes for the order, which I actually think is about right for 2 pizzas without calling ahead. I was glad to get my food as it was not a remotely cordial atmosphere. But for me, that's a big bummer part of it. You look forward to getting pizza for a night in with some fun horror movies (especially on Halloween!) and it shouldn't be started out with unfriendly, unwelcoming service. The good news? The pizza was great. The one I got was the Detroit Hunger Force and it was absolutely fantastic. My girlfriend had done a build-your-own with ricotta, sausage, onions, and bacon. Even the Caesar was spectacular. So, yes, the food (which is the most important thing) is just as great as it is at the Heights location. But the service leaves A LOT to be desired and that is also a significant part of the overall dining experience. Yes, I get that a bar makes money from the alcohol sales, but I'm sure lots of other people are like me who are just there for the food and want to be valued as customers equally (especially when dropping over $60 for a meal, 3 items, at that). I probably wouldn't go back here and hope this helps other potential customers to level set on expectations when it comes to the service, which falls flat.

Love getting Gold Tooth Tony’s when coming to Rudz for a r&b poetry night with Wan Poetry. It’s like a treat every time.

One of the coolest places to unwind after a stressful week at work. Mackenzie hooked us up with a great table but honestly any would have been fine! Awesome experience and we will be back. By the way, their Detroit Pizza rocks!

Disappointed with Last Night’s Order I’ve ordered the square pizza from Gold Tooth Tony’s several times and, for the most part, it’s been great. There was only one occasion in the past where the pizza was just okay—but nothing too bad to complain about. Last night, however, was a completely different story. I ordered two squares via DoorDash and even customized my order with added options. The receipt I received was accurate, but what showed up at my door was far from what I ordered. Instead of the square pizzas I was expecting, I got two mini circular pies—something I never ordered. The pizzas were dry, lacked sauce, and had terrible chicken that tasted awful. It was nothing like the quality I’ve come to expect. It honestly felt like whoever worked last night didn’t care at all about the food they were sending out. Gold Tooth Tony’s, you’re better than this. Stick to what you’re good at (the square pizzas) and seriously consider addressing quality control in your kitchen. Last night’s experience was disgusting and not worth the money.

$60 for 4 corners and garlic knots?!? Criminal! Pizza was soggy with little to no crunch. I was down to pay if it was good but dang.... Super disappointed. And damn near $4 for a small dipping cup of mid ass ranch! This place has some audacity. At least the flavor was good. .. Nothing special just good. Love some good Detroit Pizza but this ain't it. No intention of going back.

Gold Tooth Tony's: A Detroit-Style Dream! ★★★★★ Gold Tooth Tony's is an absolute gem! The atmosphere is fantastic, creating a perfect ambiance for enjoying delicious food with friends. Our server was attentive and friendly, making the entire experience even more enjoyable. But let's talk about the food! We started with the curly fries, which were crispy and perfectly seasoned, and the garlic knots, a cheesy, garlicky delight. For the main event, we couldn't resist trying both the vegetable and meatball pizzas. Wow! The Detroit-style crust is simply amazing – crispy edges and a chewy, airy center. The toppings on both pizzas were fresh and flavorful. If you're a pizza lover, Gold Tooth Tony's is a must-try! Detroit-style pizza has officially won us over. #GoldToothTonys #DetroitPizza #HoustonFoodie #PizzaLover #AmazingFood #GreatService

Excellent Detroit pizza. Very good mango Rita. Can watch the Astros here.

Google
Pizza is ok. Bready and soggy. I was expecting more like Detroit style with crispy crust. The garlic knots are delicious though. I probably won’t order from them again since this is the 3rd time and I’ve always been disappointed. The prices are insane, too. It was $46.24 before delivery, tax, and tip for a small pepperoni and sausage pizza and garlic knots.

Yelp
Ive been to this location a couple times. The first time I grabbed pizza to go. I went home and really liked it. I went back a second time with another person and we decided to eat there. The pizza was good but as I went to get a to-go box, I saw a mouse running from the back portion near the pool tables to the front area near the tables. I left the rest of the pizza there. The building is older and I know that it's inside of a bar but they really need to get pest control in there and set mouse traps. I have not been back since that happened.

Yelp
It might not be plainly obvious from the outside, but there is a Gold Tooth Tony's kitchen inside this Rudyard's. Take a menu and find a seat and when you're ready order at the bar. Nice and simple! The bar itself leans a bit towards neighborhood dive, but in an approachable way. They have TV's and shuffle board, pool, darts. It's sporty. The Detroit style dough works for me. I'm a big fan of crispy edges and the 4 square format gives plenty of those to chew on. There's 6 or 7 named pizza options that you can order, or you can just build your own, which is the best way to go probably. The Griz ended up being my favorite, as it balanced flavors well with out getting soupy. The supreme was heavily sauced, and ended up sitting in a puddle of the drippings that made that made the crispy part less crispy. Also tried the steak fingers from the Bar's menu. The sweet potato fried there were top notch! Fried food is hard to mess up. But the menu for Rudz looks really good honestly and it made me think a repeat visit for their stuff is in the cards for me at least!

Yelp
We were looking to try Gold Tooth Tony's and I guess they partnered with Rudyard's to serve it at their bar? Fairly confusing at first when we were looking for where to go. Anyways, this is a dive bar located on Waugh next to Al's Quick Stop. Parking was available in a small lot across the street. The bar itself was definitely fairly dated; you ordered at the bar and staff brought food to you. They had a bar menu and a pizza menu; we got a steak finger basket and two Detroit style pizzas. The steak fingers were alright... not much meat, a lot of breading. The waffle fries were crispy. The gravy wasn't great, super buttery. The Detroit style pizzas were alright. The crust was nice and thick; but there were either too little or too much toppings. When there were too much toppings, the crust got soggy from the juice. Wasn't too impressed with what the two pizza's that we ordered but might have to try the other items on their menu in the future. Thinking a simple pepperoni square might be the way to go.

Yelp
Whew. I've been twice in one week. I'm going back on Wednesday. The pizza is fire but the overall bar was a vibe!!!! We had elote, 2 pizzas, and dill pickle dip my first trip. I had an IPA while I waited on my to go order Saturday. The bartenders are a vibe. Decor is a vibe. Other guests are nice and chatty in a non annoying way. I don't even like small talk but have found myself talking to other patrons at the bar each time. I saw Monday is steak night. I'm going. Wednesday and Thursday are trivia nights I believe. And karaoke on Thursday. Go alone. Go with friends. Just. Go.

Yelp
The Detroit Pizza is amazing but skip the "Houston Style" . It's a bad version of a frozen pizza.

Yelp
Rolled the dice and was pleasantly surprised! Gold Tooth's tomato sauce is SO GOOD, and the ingredients tastes fresh and authentic. 8/10

Yelp
So. I've seen the rave of Gold tooth tony's pizza all over the internet and tiktok and decided to try it. To be fair, we did take out so this review might not be as applicable to those who plans to dine in. We went on a weekday evening, ordered online and it told us to pick it up in about 20-30 minutes. We arrived on time but had to wait another 30 minutes to pick it up and had to wait in the store. What we ordered: *Pep - the crust wasn't as crispy as we wished. A little underseasoned sauce as well. Could be better I think, but wasn't necessarily worth almost $20 for four pieces, albeit they were huge and loaded slices. Party of 2 price - about $24+ for a single pizza for take out including taxes and tips I give it a 6/10, I don't think I'll necessarily return, maybe I would try the heights location for dine in some point, but unfortunately, the delayed pick-up really ruined our experience of Gold tooth tony. Don't get me wrong, it's solid pizza, but I don't think it's worth that much, but again this is coming from someone who used to live in the east coast so I have some expectations to my pizzas. Couldn't say much about the vibe but it seemed like a chill bar place great for hanging out with friends!

Yelp
Nice bar vibe spot, staff was extremely friendly and polite. Had the Griz (sweet, full of flavor, but personal preference is that it is more wet than I would have liked because it is loaded with sauce) and Hunger Force (definitely recommend and would order again). Detroit style pizza is not my preference as I'm more of a NY thin crunchy slice. However, I'll always give it a try and won't knock the restaurant for that.

Yelp
Great spot to get Detroit style pizza! Got the griz, special of the month, and hunger force. All the pizzas were flavorful and filling, but the dough seemed a little undercooked. My favorite was the special of the month, which was a vegetarian pizza with goat cheese!

Tim B.

Yelp
The Houston veggie personal pan isn't worth the $24. They honestly should keep to Detroit-style pizza and toss these round things in the trash
