The Best New Hotel Restaurants in the World

"Artistry, whimsy and a distinctly West Coast approach are all on the menu at beloved chef Dominique Crenn’s latest venture at the new La Fantaisie, a jewel-box boutique hotel in the heart of the 9th. The glowing yellow, Scandinavian interiors by Martin Brudnizki feel distinctly un-Parisian which, in a way, is extremely Parisian. The pescatarian menu takes advantage of the region’s best ingredients and techniques for a France-meets-California alchemy that just works."

Golden Poppy

"In a brand new hotel, chef Dominique Crenn (who has three Michelin stars at her Atelier Crenn in San Francisco) has named her first Parisian restaurant after California's state flower, in a nod to the American state where her talent was revealed. In a setting that celebrates greenery, you can savour the Californian vibes of this fresh, colourful cuisine, which plays on a variety of culinary influences (Asian, Latin American and Mexican). Meat is deliberately omitted. Prepared in the large open kitchen, the dishes on this menu, some devised for sharing, are sure to make you smile; they have the wow factor and depth, eg "ikejime" tuna tartare with kimchi wrapped in a shiso leaf. There is a lovely terrace overlooking a lush garden – a rare thing in Paris." - Michelin Inspector

The 38 Essential Restaurants in Paris

"Slaying a slew of negative local stereotypes about American food, the return of one of their own is proving to French diners that there’s actually some spectacularly good food in the United States. Chef Dominique Crenn moved from France to San Francisco in 1988, trained with Jeremiah Tower, and became the first female chef in the country to earn three Michelin stars at her restaurant L’Atelier Crenn. Now she’s opened Golden Poppy, named for the official flower of her adopted state, as a very personal homage to California cooking, all presented in trippy, through-the-looking-glass Victorian conservatory decor done by trendy designer Martin Brudnizki. The small-plates menu runs to dishes like Parker House rolls with shiso-miso sauce, egg-yolk jam, and rice cream; griddled corn tacos with grilled conch; and gem lettuce wraps of aged sea bream, mint, coriander, and Korean condiments. Don’t miss the coconut beignets with pineapple for dessert. Located in the Ninth Arrondissement." - Alexander Lobrano

The Grey Will Bring Its Southern Cooking to Paris With a New Restaurant Next Year - Eater

"News of Bailey and Morisano’s expansion into Paris follows the successful opening of acclaimed France-born, San Francisco-based chef Dominique Crenn’s Parisian debut, Golden Poppy. Local food writer Alexander Lobrano describes it as 'the most talked about new opening in Paris' and notes that its cross-cultural menu of small plates 'may help to see off the entrenched French conviction that Americans mostly subsist on unhealthy junk food.'" - Osayi Endolyn

In short, terrific food with inconsistent service. We had an 8pm reservation, it took 35 minutes from when we sat down to get the corn bread appetizer, and 45 minutes before the bottle we ordered arrived on the table. The folks to our left arrived, ordered their wine and got it while we waited, which was unfortunate. We asked the staff at that point which they told me it was coming with the food we ordered which seemed odd. The restaurant seemed to be at ~50% capacity. From there, the food came in two waves, and was delightful. The crispy rice and mushroom tart were the highlights. The dashi with the rice was terrific. The chili oil could be a lot spicier, was bland. Everything is very well priced, but I don't think I'll be back due to how poorly timed the experience was. Very minor detail but the tables seem too big for the couch area they have, causing a bit of an awkward shifting of tables if you ever want to get out to use the restroom.

A wonderful experience from start to finish. Fresh, flavorful and bright presentations of the dishes. We loved each plate , especially the desserts. The staff was just amazing , fun and exceptional service. The decor was reminiscent of California sunshine! We can’t wait to go back.

Not as good as what I thought it will be. Supper hyped up because of famous US chef Dominique Crenn. But the food isn’t actually consistently fantastic. Can definitely have better food in Paris. Of all the dishes we had, I’m only recommending the mushroom tart. Every other dish is mediocre and too overpriced including the Parker house rolls. Environment/vibes is nice. But in my opinion, not worth the money for the meal!

The food was amazing, especially the Tuna & the Caesars salad were excellent. The seasoning of all dishes was bold and I loved that. (The open kitchen with the handsome butch chef was the cherry on the cake.) The atmosphere was - thanks to the DJ - really good as well. The music was enjoyable! The prices are good: 250€ for 2 people. Here’s the BUT: the service was clearly the only downside; yes, it’s relaxed and that’s cool. But instead of dancing and being overly flamboyant, I would have loved to get the right drinks I ordered in less than 20 mins (after a reminder), a proper wine recommendation and some attention when we wanted another drink or when we wanted to pay.

I loved everything about this place. The quirky decor. The kind and attentive service and the absolutely stunning food. West coast, LA vibe with lots of Asian influence but a modern fresh take. The potato starch buns with condiments were delish. The mushroom tart was deemed almost as good as sex. It was so good. Chanterelles, shiitake with chili mayo and pickles on a sable crust. The tuna tartare with beets, Kim chi and shiso were well balanced and surprising. A potato dish with soft fried onions was the perfect comfort food. Banana pancakes with soya sirup, a sweet milky Koji sauce and caviar were very good, but more of a brunch style item. I did not appreciate the okonomiyaki, but my company loved it. The desserts were also top notch. Large servings. I had the orange kakigori which was the favourite of the table with soft creamy orange ice cream, apricot shaves ice and passion fruit sauce. Yum. The chocolate dessert was also highly rated. All in all, one of the best meals I have had in a very long time. Highly recommended and although a bit expensive - great value.

Google
The celebrity chef and amazing ambiance don’t quite make up for the meh dishes and high prices. We got the potato soup (good but couldn’t taste the potato), tuna tartare (highlight of the night), okonomiyaki (meh), and salad (meh). Each dish was missing something: under-salted, not enough texture, or one flavor was overpowering. With so much great food in Paris, you should head elsewhere.

I didn’t realize how much paris needed this restaurant until I came and dined. The menu is completely unique and everything was FABULOUS. We left our choices in the confiance of the waiter and he made great selections. Incredible flavors and perfect execution!

A wonderful setting, beautiful decor, interesting menu. As much as the actual dinner choices are unique and some delicious, the desserts are a bit lackluster. All in all I highly recommend this restaurant and am glad I discovered it.
