Yelp
After eating here, I think I finally understand why the phrase, "I really wanted to love this place" has become such a popular Yelpism. 'Cause, yeah, I did. Want to love this place, that is:
First, the good: Service was really sweet and I liked the space, which felt very zen. There was also some sort of summer special going on when I was there that entailed Rose for $7 per glass. Love a place that offers affordable, decent wine beyond Happy Hour.
Now, the not so good: Unfortunately, I have to agree with Sarah S. when it comes to the food. Friend and I tried various beef dishes, and the meat was chewy and bland in all of them. Not really impressive for a spot that is supposed to specialize in Brazilian and Korean cooking, what with both being notable for bringing it when it comes to beef.
The Beef Wrap appetizer we ordered to begin, included the same hard to bite through meat that came with my friend's summer special of Cold Soba Noodles. For the latter, I believe it was $9 for just noodles and dipping sauce, and $5 more for added protein. Friend is more laid back about food than yours truly, so he was okay with this dish, but like I said, I was unimpressed. I was even more unimpressed with the $20 Sirloin Cap dish I ordered. This consisted of thinly sliced meh Sirloin and a few tiny pieces of grilled Broccoli Florets. So not worth it. A $6 Pork Dumpling Starter was my favorite, not 'cause it was the most affordable, though that didn't hurt, but 'cause it actually tasted pretty good. Though not sure why the Dumplings were so tiny.
Going to go with Sarah S.'s take on this place again in that maybe it would be better off as a bar that serves food, rather than trying to compete as restaurant. After this experience, I'd consider returning for a drink or two and to maybe share a couple different small plates, but definitely not for a full meal. It's a shame, 'cause I got the sense that this is a labor of love for the owner, who I think is the same guy who rushed over to help guide my confused friend as he struggled to figure out how to eat cold Soba properly. It really is the kind of restaurant you find yourself rooting for. Sadly, though, for now I can't get behind the many Yelp raves.
Food, for me, was 2 stars, but pleasant ambiance, kind service, and affordable wine boost it to three.
