"The team behind lively East Village restaurants the Wayland and Good Night Sonny closed down the Wild Son’s Meatpacking District spot and reopened the restaurant in the East Village, in a new airy corner space, earlier this year. The popular all-day cafe leans into casual day-time fare that easily translates to brunch, including items like buckwheat pancakes, corn skillet cakes, a zucchini and squash frittata, and a cocktail selection that features bloody marys, a coffee negroni, and a booze-optional frozen cucumber lemonade. The restaurant is open for outdoor dining, takeout, and delivery from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday." - Eater Staff

"There are certain things you look for in a date-night bar, and Good Night Sonny checks off most of these boxes. It has good food, great cocktails, it usually isn’t impossible to find a seat, and it’s in a location that most people won’t have a problem getting to (the East Village). We also like the fact that it’s cooler than your average bar, but it’s still casual enough that you can just stop in for a quick beer." - bryan kim

"Goodnight Sonny comes from the same team behind rowdy East Village late-night spot the Wayland, but it’s considerably more chill. It’s all about the cocktails and seafood here, served in a colorful space with a wood bar. Meet for cocktails, and if things go well, raw bar awaits." - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya

The Happy Hour Oyster special: 12/$18 was fantastic! The oysters were well shucked, cold, fresh and came with a classic mignonette and a cocktail sauce with a little twist to it. The shrimp cocktail were big, beautifully cooked, tasty shrimp- not over cooked, just right. The whipped codfish brandade dip with pumpernickel toast was awesome! It was creamy, smooth, and not salty. The clams casino were seasoned well and delicious! I wanted to order more of everything. The clams in sauce were also delicious but not as good as the other items we ordered (to me). My absolute favorite thing was the bread pudding with brown butter pecans and that sauce with a hint of orange- wow!! I rarely think dessert at restaurants is worth going back for, but that bread pudding will be drawing me back sooner than later. It’s not often my husband and I love the same dessert… this bread pudding was right up there with Grace Street’s Basque Cheesecake. Bravo Chef, Bravo! The waitstaff were very friendly and attentive. The vibe was great, the tables/seating were comfortable and spaced out. The music was excellent but maybe a tad loud. Like others have noted, the acoustics aren’t great when the place gets packed, especially with the music up a tad too high. Overall, a great place to catch up with friends and grab a tasty bite. Don’t forget to take advantage of their Happy Hour! Looking forward to going back again soon.

Google
Drinks were solid, tasty and interesting. The bar is very cozy and well decorated/lit. Bar tender wasn’t very attentive, never asked if I wanted another cocktail and took forever to bring our check (we were sitting at the bar). Would still come back for the drinks and ambiance.

Google
This place for happy hour is a steal! We ordered 3 dozen oysters and it was finally satisfying. Never do I feel I get enough oysters but this was plenty. Very nice atmosphere and service was good.

Google
I went here with the team after work and really enjoyed my time here. I particularly liked the Block Island Style Crab Dip. This came with a side of lemon and crackers. It was super light, savory, and filling. This restaurant had good, fast service. I only wish they had more seating options for bigger groups. I group of ~10 had to combine a few tables for seating and even that was a little too cozy. Something to keep in mind if you have a bigger group.

Google
As always a fantastic time at GS with a friendly bar staff and great music. I really love swinging by on a Sunday for an early afternoon cocktail before night hits. Definitely come for some bites as well as the food is phenomenal.

Daria Dunne

Google
The food was incredible, we got burrata with tomatoes and french dip beef sandwich, so good 5/5. The cocktails were delicious, also 5/5. Service is not so great, bartenders are not very attentive, could be better but we still had great time!

Google
favorite restaurant in the city. i’ve brought so many friends and family here just because i love it that much. their happy hour is the best in the city. i usually get the oysters, clams and a dirty martini. you can’t beat the price. i’ve had everything on their menu and anything you get on there is great. my boyfriend usually gets one of the sandwiches because they’re so filling. their cocktails are some of my favorites in the city too. agave blues and the repping time cocktails are two of my favs. they have the NICEST staff, hands down. if you’re in the east village please do yourself a favor and go here.

Google
Go here for the vibe. Drinks are good but pricey, a little cheaper during happy hour where they go for $12, but you can only get a margarita or daiquiri. A dozen oysters is $18 during happy hour. Service was a little slow and not particularly nice and attentive.

Yelp
This remains an East Village/neighborhood favorite. Forever in my heart. A place I go when I want to feel GOOD. I won't get into drink specifics because it changes over time and because the bartenders will make you anything you want, but you can't beat the taste or the atmosphere. Some cocktail ingredients include: celery, cucumber, green apple, marmalade, chamomile, jasmine tea, basil. With all types of spirits: gin, vodka, tequila, whiskeys. The drinks are always top-notch. The snacks are always sophisticated. It gets wild on weekends, but if you hit it on the right weekday or holiday, you'll feel like you're the only person at the only bar at the edge of the world.

Yelp
Always a classic spot to grab a drink with friends or some food. I've been here several times and their cocktails hit the spot every time- specifically the aperol spritz. Their oyster happy hour is a no brainer. There are about 4 tables outside which are usually filled on a beautiful day however there is also a covering for unexpected rain. At night this bar typically gets more packed but it is a great spot to hit any time they are open

Yelp
Goodnight Sonny was one of my favorite bars to chill at during my visit to New York. Amazing cocktails and very unique flavors! Good ambience and friendly service! :D + Almost Lover [6/5!!] --------------------- A deliciously sweet and airy drink! Reasonably strong for the price. I really enjoyed the egg white. Reminded me of apple cider! I would definitely recommend this one. + Swipe Right [6/5] ------------------ I enjoyed the egg white in this so much that I ordered another egg white cocktail right after. It's very tangy and you can actually taste a little bit of the Szechuan peppercorn-- I actually wish it was a bit stronger! It's a super unique cocktail.

Emma K.

Yelp
Went here for drinks with friends. The drinks were good, however our server could not seem to remember our order and brought us the wrong dish and forgot a drink multiple times. I get that it's a laid back atmosphere but with prices like this place looking to be taken care of a bit more.

Liz B.

Yelp
My friend and I came here around 12:30 AM on a Wednesday since they were one of bars open later than 1 and just got two cocktails : Sorry miss Jackson(definitely on the sweeter side but no too sweet where I didn't want to finish it) and champagne papi (very light) ! I've seen this place packed before on a Friday so it was nice to get in without being crowded. Drinks were good and I'd come back to try more!

Sarah P.

Yelp
This is a great spot if you want a cocktail and/or a light bite. As far as food, I recommend the market fish sandwich. It tastes like a fish version of a pastrami sandwich, it is delicious. They do offer a HH M-F 4-6, which I appreciate. I always love a deal! They have great date night vibes with a moody, soft candle lit atmosphere. This place feels both cozy and airy with the windows. Their cocktails are super yummy and worth the price point. Refreshing and deliciously crafted. I have absolutely no complaints. 5/5

Vinny V.

Yelp
Great spot to have some oysters & good cocktails! Maralina made our visit but Goodnight Sunny doesn't miss !

Rosalia X.

Yelp
Looking for a new place to go to for Happy Hour? You can get dozen oysters for $18 (however there are three selections, but you can't go wrong with either) I had four of each selection for the first dozen before my friend and I just picked the one oyster we enjoyed the most. I only ordered oysters during the happy hour for a quick bite. Didn't try the other stuff on the menu, maybe I'll come try things off their menu.

Jessica S.

Yelp
Much more of a degen vibe then I'd expect from yelp, it was blasting (great) music and packed on a Saturday night. One star off because I thought the cocktails weren't strong enough and tasted way too sweet for me

Midori G.

Yelp
We came in for cocktails on a Thursday night. They were fairly busy, but we managed to snag two seats at the bar. We ordered the hierarchy of gifts and social butterfly. They were both great! The bartenders were friendly and able to give great suggestions. A great place to stop in for a drink!

Allie G.

Yelp
Yesterday was my second time at Goodnight Sonny and I absolutely love this bar. My friend and I arrived around 2:30 PM on a Sunday and the place wasn't busy at all. We decided to sit at the bar and the bartender gave us menus right away. The decor was eclectic but trendy - exposed brick, wooden countertops, and lots of framed paintings/prints of everyone from Elvis to Steve Jobs. I ordered the Sorry, Ms. Jackson (on the heavier side but delicious and well balanced) and my friend got the Agave Blues (smoky, boozy, difficult to drink quickly). I also ended up trying the Social Butterfly, which was lighter and very refreshing. Overall, fantastic drinks with a very pleasant ambiance! I love that they switch up their cocktail menu, too. Will return!

Eleanor A.

Yelp
Fantastic oysters, good happy hour, my margarita was awesome as well. I usually just get an oyster shooter and tequila and tonic but I'm really glad I tried the Marg. This place is a classic for me, will be returning.

Sabrina P.

Yelp
Solid spot to grab drinks before hopping around to another bar in EV on a Friday night. I only got a club soda but would return to try their cocktails. My friend really enjoyed her cocktail. The music was good and I'd want to come back to try their food too!

Jillian B.

Yelp
Was so excited to come here for happy hour drinks since it's been hyped up to me for a while, but unfortunately was pretty underwhelmed. Drinks weren't anything special, and the service was slow and not friendly. Won't be returning.

diamond f.

Yelp
Terrible management here. Been here several times. Each time it's the same. Sketchy hugely drunk men are allowed in here making women feel incredibly unsafe. I tried to make a suggestion and was shocked at how rude the manager was. Literally had a guy try to slip something in my drink. I'd steer clear.

Sasha t.

Yelp
Hey you guyyyyyssssss!!! You do not want to miss this spot! It's giving.... The shrimp cocktail is so fresh. The oysters all I can say is WOW! Angel was our bartender and co-owner and he is a top notch mixologist! He dropped a dime that they are now going to be open till 4 AM, with the kitchen open till 3:30 AM. WHAT!!!! The music is it!! Don't miss out, run in and check this place out-you will not be disappointed!!!

Yaqi Y.

Yelp
Not a place for you to catch up with an old friend or for a date; too loud. Food is decent, but way overpriced. This is a fun setting to drinks and food only at happy hour. It was insane how HH oyster is a dozen for $18 and regularly $4/piece. It is a substantial difference. I wouldn't recommend their cocktails, unless it's the classic ones because they're too sweet. Or, stick to beers.

Almira F.

Yelp
I've been going here for ages and they've been consistently been a good place to go to for drinks especially sitting at the bar . The bartenders are still the same which I love . I enjoy their old fashioned and just about any drinks they make . I like the dark cozy setting. I hope they remain for years and years .

Neil P.

Yelp
Overall: Quiet ambience for a quick drink Menu: Extensive selection of drinks with bartenders that can do magic

Monique S.

Yelp
Great late night city haunt for oysters! I ordered a ham plate and oysters with 1 drink. Everything tasted fresh and had a great variety. My only complaint was that tables were small and since the place was crowded I felt like there wasn't enough space to properly eat or enjoy the food without constantly bumping into someone or vice versa. But it's hard to find many places still selling fresh oysters after 10pm so I will definitely be back!

Rafiat K.

Yelp

Yelp
Where else are you going to find such a great damn deal on oysters in Manhattan for happy hour? Four varieties of New England oysters for 18 bucks. They were delicious. We didn't try cocktails, but the bartender sure looked like he knew what he was doing. The place filled up quickly. It was trendy and had a good vibe. Our server was friendly. I'll be back.

Christina S.

Yelp
Popped by this spot for drinks with some friends this past weekend. The vibe of the outdoor patio was perfect as it is beautifully covered in plants and music was on point. The cocktails were also amazing and we all enjoyed ourselves. NOTE: you will be charged for water so don't be shocked when it's added to the bill

Heidi L.

Yelp
Service was stellar. Food was very good. Onion soup was phenomenal. Drinks here are wonderful - bartenders are open to requests for drinks off menu.

Jaime P.

Yelp
Best. Some baby man from Ohio was crying about non alcoholic drinks. Stay home. Cocktails and food were point.

U-co O.

Yelp
It became too popular. I like it weekdays. Weekend comes, this place changes the atmosphere big time, staying away from it. Great cocktail

Ian G.

Yelp
Great food and drinks. Staff is always friendly and caring. The vibe is fun with a classic NYC feel. One of my favorite bars!! Highly recommend.

Joshua P.

Yelp
Food and drinks are always bomb. Lobster rolls are a must. The chowder is also amazing.

Channing H.

Yelp
Always a good time at Goodnight Sonny! Its a great spot for happy hour, dinner, or late night drinks and in a prime location to start or end your night in the east village. Most people may only see it as a fun place to get drinks but I gotta say the food here is really good too! I would recommend coming for happy hour on weekdays 4-6. Start off with one of their frozen drinks (they change on a weekly basis and are freakin delicious) or if you're not feeling frozen they have really good cocktails & beer selection. You then have to get the happy hour oysters (the deal is a dozen for $15)...they were so fresh and loved the mignonette that came with the accompaniments. Other dishes I've had which were tasty are the Spicy Mussels in tomato broth, shishito peppers, and roast beef sandwich. I love this place!

Irina C.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and this is one of my favorite cocktail bars in the area. Great drinks, friendly staff, and they have outdoor seating. Gets really busy at night on the weekends!

Justin T.

Yelp
Good date night spot and mid day drinking spot. Dope bartenders and drinks with solid music and indoor/outdoor setting

Viona C.

Yelp
One of my favorite oyster places! It's normally pretty busy so I suggest getting a reservation ahead of times. Oysters are always fresh and delicious. The drinks are also tasty and strong LOL. A little on the pricier side but well worth it.

Johanna B.

Yelp
From the moment I approached Good Night Sonny sitting on the corner of 1st Avenue and East 8th Street, I knew that it would be a charming place. Perfect for a date, catching up with friends or dinner, Good Night Sonny sets the right mood. I expected it to be a lot more crowded considering it was a Thursday night. Of note, the music was quite loud and I had to speak above it which was frustrating at times. We were able to grab a table and as I admired the cute atmosphere complete with ceramic floor tiling, we looked over the menu for food and drink options. Unfortunately, we missed out on the HH specials--ending at 7 p.m. As far as drinks, I began with the Aperol Spritz (perfect on a hot evening and possibly my go to summer time drink) and ended with a crisp Rose. Their menu is diverse with some carefully crafted and unique cocktails. As far as food, since I had eaten, we shared a small plate: Boquerones Tartine which was marinated white anchovies on toasted pumpernickel, crème fraiche, lemon zest & pickled onion, This was SO delicious and a perfect snack to accompany our drinks. I'm eager to return to try their HH oysters or other items on the menu. In addition, I want to experience their brunch. I really like Good Night Sonny and plan on returning soon. Definitely recommend.

Lily T.

Yelp
Pretty cool place to come for happy hour. The dollar oysters were very fresh and good drink deals. Their cocktails were pretty strong as well. Service was also very warm and friendly and our waiter was also the only person working for the whole place. He did amazing for being by himself. the food though wasn't all the memorable. I had the big green salad which was ok. Our friends had the mussels which I had a taste and was just ok too. Overall a good place to come and chill

Kate H.

Yelp
I only went here for the cocktails but they didn't disappoint! Great nighttime atmosphere and I love the big windows

Liz S.

Yelp
Stopped in during the week for happy hour and grabbed a dozen oysters and some cocktails! The drinks were tasty and the oysters were as well. We had a great experience with the staff too - everyone was friendly and the service was quick. The only thing holding me back from a 5/5 is the overall vibe - I was hoping for a slightly more chill, relaxed environment.

Yelp
Yuppie central! Good Night Sonny always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I keep coming back, because it's one of my friend's favourite bars. Why do I dislike GNS? 1. It's crowded every single time. You have to teleport from work to get a seat at the bar here. The only time we have ever gotten a bar seat without fighting was running here when we got out at 3pm. It's so packed in here, in the winter the windows seriously foggy up the wazoo. When you walk in you instantly begin sweating, and it takes 10 minutes to defog your glasses. 2. The bartenders are assholes. Actively ignore you, despite the fact you fought your way through the drunk sea to get your drink order in. I have an inkling, their clientele is so entitled and rude, they assume every customer is a bitch. I have actively seen icy bartender melt down and treat us like human beings once they realize we're nice customers. Keep in mind, that was only ONE NIGHT. I've been here at least fifteen times. And I'm pretty sure she realized we weren't assholes, because the girls next to us were actually assholes. Which leads me to their next point. 3. The clientele is spawn from yuppy hell. It's like 50 Sex and the City re-skins spawned in one place. They're rude. They're drunk. They're oblivious. They're entitled. Got into an argument with a woman because she stole one of our bar seats while one of us was in the restroom. Refused to give it back, and then began to drink my already half consumed drink claiming it was hers!! It was totally bizarre. At least it helped the bartender not treat us like shit. 4. It pretends to be a club despite being the size of a small apartment. Speaks for itself. I've never come for the food. So maybe that's the draw, but GNS is a horror show in my eyes.

Brian F.

Yelp
A small bar with a nice ambiance. I was able to get a seat at the bar which looks really nice with the lights on the back wall. I ordered the to die dreaming in Kentucky ($15). It has vanilla in it so it was more sweet than anything but still very good. If you're not looking for a strong drink that doesn't take like it this is a good one to get. They have a good happy hour but I wasn't able to stop by for it. That's something I'd definitely want to try if I ever came here again.

J. Lawrence N.

Yelp
I really enjoyed Good Night Sonny. This wasn't the first place on our list for date night, but the place we had chosen did not have oysters, so we went down my list of must try oyster spots and GNS has been on that list for awhile. What an unexpected treat. Now, I got to put it out there that this is really a place for people who drink, and looking to have a bit of food with their libations. It's small and quaint, but gets a very lively crowd that packs them in. That said, for two non-drinkers, we felt quite at home, and enjoyed the atmosphere. It's definitely not the place to go if you want an intimate setting, but it's the perfect place for a couple like us who were looking for a light bite (and oysters) before catching a date night movie. I loved that they offered a nice selection of oysters, which they make accessible during their happy hour oyster special. You get the same oysters at 6 p.m. that you would at 10 p.m. They're a hearty bunch and offer a great balance of east and west coast, and not the usual frumpy offerings. I chose to let our waiter do the choosing, and I must say he chose quite well. The menu is somewhat limited. But, again, it's not the draw. The oysters, the atmosphere and place to hang and chill with friends is what makes Good Night Sonny the kind of place you're never quite ready to say good night to ...

Malick C.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I swung by Goodnight Sonny last night for a customary nightcap and were berated by the rudest waiter. We sat at one of the 4 empty tables and he made it his "job" to continuously change the reasons why we were disturbing his night... 1- We sat at a dirty table (fine by us, it's the village) 2-He has to clean the table because that reflects poorly on him (cool, we got up, got a menu from the bartender and waited) 3- People having fun by the window had been waiting for the table (cool, it was nice out anyway) He never moved them from the window seat, he was just having a bad day and decided to deprive the rest of the staff from the good tip that we would have given them because we on the other hand were in a great moof after moving 2 blocks away that evening. I've lived in the city for most of my adult life, in the village for half a dozen years. My girl and I have also both worked in the service industry, and this is why I'm writing this review. Let's do better and treat our customers with decency. They could be our next regulars. Shout out to the Wayland owned by the same group where this would never happen. I was a regular there when I lived 2 blocks away a little further East

Joseph P.

Yelp
Really liked this very comfortable corner bar / bistro in the heart of the East Village. Warm ambiance perfect for meeting up with friends after work or for liling away an afternoon with happy hour drinks and small plates to pick on. Oysters on the half shell or Shishito peppers are good choices. In warmer weather nearly all the walls open up to the sidewalk scene, and it's all reminiscent of a Parisian brasserie.

Matt P.

Yelp
Located in the LES, it's a great place for oysters and cocktails. VERDICT: Excellent seafood and a few really solid draft beer selections. Great for happy hour and chowing down on super fresh and clean oysters. My girlfriend and I shared a dozen oysters and the Montauk Chowder, both were excellent. The oysters were extremely fresh, clean, and professionally shucked, and the mignonette sauce is delicious - the peppercorns are a nice touch. The Montauk Chowder is delicious, the shrimp, clams, lobster, and fish were incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked - definitely worth the wait. The chowder base was tasty, but a little on the watery side. Also, the portions of lobster and fish filet are a bit disappointing, but the whole dish is so good, I'd definitely get it again. PROS: Located around other great bars, restaurants, and bakeries, so it makes wandering around filling your stomach an easy task. The seafood is spot on and fresh. Good spot for happy hours (it gets lively), after work oysters, liquid lunches, etc. CONS: Some may find the space on the smaller side. When it gets crowded, the wait can get longer than expected. But - none of these should deter you.

Marissa S.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood spot that really can satisfy several different moods. We've had oysters and cocktails midday that were great and come for drinks on a Friday night. Solid music and even met some new people. Definitely recommend a stop in.

Ariel J.

Yelp
Phenomenal spot. drinks are strong. Food is flavorful and the staff is extremely observant. The tomato appetizer is incredible. It started raining and Pete saved us with the umbrella. Devon is an awesome waitress. Thank you for the wonderful experience.

Chelsey U.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick bite when I was in the city. Great vibes, conversation, and service at the bar. Had the wedge salad, steak tartare, and a dozen oysters. Would easily order all of it again. See y'all next time!

Veronika O.

Yelp
It actually an understatement to say that I live here... Truthfully if I'm feeling oysters (which I always am) this is my go to place and not just because the oysters are always so fresh and delicious but because - the drinks are perfectly made - the decor is mid century modern meets New York - the food is delectable ( you can't go wrong with the Prosciutto plate) After trying so many oyster bars throughout the city I'm so happy to have found this place because they never disappoint!! Cant wait to be back soon!!! The amount of photos I have of their oysters is a bit Obnoxious and I'm sorry about that in advance.. not really

Sam R.

Yelp
Went here with friends and loved it! Fun and great drinks and bites. They are so accommodating if you want changes to drinks or bites and would recommend for a friend night or book club

Rif S.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite bars in NYC. Great vibe and cocktails. I went there yesterday at 4pm (right when they open) and one of the women that worked there told me they're not open yet. When I asked what time they open, she rudely said 4pm but they're running behind and need 10 min. I asked her if I could wait inside while they opened (it was 10 degrees outside) and she again had a nasty attitude and said no. I told her it was cold outside and she said "Yes I know ." Such a shame-great spot but that woman had a horrible attitude and I will not be going back there.

Eva E.

Yelp
The best staff/service and great food/drinks. The lobster rolls are done with melted butter--so good! My fave is to sit outside during the Spring/Summer and people watch over some oysters and wine.

Conor M.

Yelp
Great martinis where they give the left overs like an adult milkshake. Service is good. Ambiance is small but good.
