The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, December 2022 - Eater NY

"I’m still bummed about the loss of Ivan Ramen’s fast-casual slurp shop at Gotham West. Even in a neighborhood as noodle dense as Hell’s Kitchen, it was a rare institution to offer so many different styles — shio, shoyu, mazamen, tori paitan, and others — in a single venue. But as luck would have it Slurp Shop’s closure made way for Gorin, a spot that specializes in Kitakata ramen. The style, originating from Japan’s Fukushima province, involves a chicken shoyu that, at least here, is cloudier and richer than comparable shoyu broths elsewhere, and a thicker, wavier noodle than most ramen shops ($20). A small pile of chopped raw onions adds sharp complexity. Ramen is a year-round staple for me, but I’d say the luxuriousness of Gorin’s soup, while not quite tonkatsu level, definitely makes this more of a late fall or winter ramen as opposed to a summer one." - Eater Staff

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, Fall 2018 - Eater NY

"I’ve been thinking a lot about Ivan Orkin’s noodle shop Ivan Ramen lately, especially as the Long Island-native prepares to replicate his concept across the globe. What I’ve always loved about Ivan is that it’s a great place to get acquainted with the classic ramen styles, even if they all boast an Orkin twist or two. I swung by his counter service spot at Gotham West on Thursday and ordered the shio and shoyu ($14 each), and damn, they were stellar. The shoyu, per usual, was darker than competing versions elsewhere, packing a deeper, richer, saltier, and more caramelized flavor. The shio, in turn, exhibited an obscene amount of smoky bonito goodness, making it uncharacteristically assertive for such a style. And the thin rye noodles, as always, were gorgeously thin and not too filling. I’m stoked to see more Ivan Ramen elsewhere!" - Eater Staff

Google
The Ramen is ok, soup is rich and full of flavor. Topped Char siu is soft, and the fat just fall into the soup. Ramen is tasty, the thick noodles bring a little chewy texture and easy bring soup flavor with one bite. However, the price is little high.

Google
Great place for a variety of Japanese dishes! Absolutely LOVED the pork rice bowl with a delicious sauce and mayo (yes it works!). Also loved both the pork and fried chicken buns, as well as ramen. Fun to sit on the bar and watch them cook!

Google
A good option for late night ramen. Service was fast and bowls were large in portion. Kitikata and Miso ramen, chicken karaage and fried squid. All were tasty but we found the ramen to have way too much grease. Not sure if it came from the chashu or from the broth.

Google
Good place for ramen and Japanese quick eat options. Ramen with great tasting miso and bone broth. Food is promptly served. We definitely come back when are in the area.

Google
It was just fine. Maybe the room lacked energy cus I went late. The fried chicken was fine. The ramen was small for 20’. Won’t go back

Google
One of the best ramen place. Definitely try here whenever you are in the city. Very friendly staff and clean serving. I had the spicy miso my fav now😁😁😁. And my friends loved their signature ramen recommended by staff kitakata ramen.

Google
Chicken is dark and taste frozen and old and chicken taste like the oil was bad too. I been to go them west market a few times and all the other places are good but this one is not I give it .5 a star. Only thing I enjoyed was my rice even tho it was a little wet.

Google
Love this concept! With many choices to order from. Personally I walk straight trough Gorin Ramen. Please do yourself a favor and order a spicy miso! Delicious.

Yelp
This may be the best Ramen I've ever had. We got the spicy miso,Miso, and Kitakata Ramen. All were delicious and wonderful on a rainy day. Service was quick for an early lunch.

Yelp
We didn't realize it was in a food hall with a few other options. We've been twice now in the evening during prime dining hours and the foot traffic seems on the lower side. We got the takoyaki as well as the miso and kitakata ramen. The miso was a lot better than the kitakata one due to its broth being a bit less salty and a lot more wholesome. It's a convenient spot if you're in the neighborhood but wouldn't go out of my way to come.

Yelp
A very low key spot tucked away in a small food hall with good ramen! Ordering was simple - you can sit at the counter and scan the QR code. The ramen itself was yummy. The noodles were chewy, and the broth was very flavorful.

Yelp
Easy to order, convenient if you have kids as this is in a food hall with many options. Got the udon for my kids, gyoza, edamame, and fried squid. The fried squid was really good, ramen was decent, and the chashu was really tender.

Yelp
Seems like a hole in the wall that we stumbled upon after being hungry after the city cruise. The Kitakata ramen that my daughter and I shared was freshly made, filling, and perfect for the typically cold New York fall weather. The broth could have been a little bit more rich but overall, the experience was good. Of course, I had to have some takoyaki and theirs was tasty and very delicious. Glad to have tried this place!

Yelp
One of the only places in Gotham West Food Market to still be around from my first visit in 2016, which means it's gotta be pretty good. You order everything online. Every table and bar seat has its own QR code so the staff know exactly where to bring the food, which I thought was cool. I ordered a karaage don and I could see the cook frying the karaage right at the bar so you know it's fresh. The karaage don was nothing. Just some freshly fried chicken over a bed of rice and a sprinkle of cabbage. They do have an aioli type of sauce that I did find to be delicious - so much so that I got a second helping. The sauce is a must for the karaage which is sort of plain on its own. If you're in the area, go ahead and swing by. But this is not the kind of place you should go out of your way for, especially as a tourist with limited time.

Yelp
It's pretty great to have a new ramen spot in the 'hood and far over in west Hell's Kitchen than most of the other options. And, it's also great to see a new Ramen spot claim the empty space that has lingered in Gotham Market since the pandemic took out the previous ramen place. Gorin is a pretty good option for ramen. We went through our ramen phase a couple of years ago and became pretty particular about the places we liked and ones we didn't. In comparison to many of the other ramen spots in the city, Gorin offers plenty of options, and from our first experience, they're pretty tasty and delicious. Service was pretty good. But like most of the places in Gotham Market, it's order at the counter and sit at the table. Still, friendly and delightful and pretty fast with the food. Definitely up for going back.

Yelp
Honestly one of the better ramens in New York City! I like the Kitakata Ramen. The food hall itself is a bit empty, but don't let that deter you! The ramen is really good, and also the Italian restaurant across the way. Hope they all survive!

Yelp
Muy rico la verdad, pedi un ramen y unos pollos con una salsa que estaba muy rica. Este lugar queda dentro de el mercado Gotham. Es muy informal y pues la gente q trabaja ahi no habla mucho ingles pero son amables!

Yelp
Decent new spot in the neighborhood. I loved all the vegan options which is surprisingly rare in NYC. I had the Spicy Karaka with Chicken.

Yelp
I had a bad cold and stayed at home for a week but could not suppress my ramen cravings. So I decided to have delivery from Gorin. In my conclusion, It was so delicious with rich flavored soup, melting pork chasu and variety of colorful toppings. This experience was way beyond my expectation. Here is the things: I tried Spicy Miso Ramen. Came with two separate containers: soup, and noodle with toppings. I microwaved the soup coz I like it piping hot. Noodle and toppings were already beautifully assembled, so I just slide them into my Pyrex bowl from the container. Then, I poured the soup into the bowl. Very easy but looking good like dine-in even at home!

Sarah L.

Yelp
Absolutely yes. If you're craving ramen, go here! My husband and I both got the spicy miso and with some gyoza and it was our favorite food we ate during our NYC trip.

Anthony T.

Yelp
Horrible food. Chicken was dark and tasted like if it was old and frozen. And also the chicken tasted like it was cooked in old dirty oil. And rice was wet.

Yelp
Gotham West Market was missing one thing and it was Gorin Ramen! I got the Spicy Soy Kitakata and it was such comforting meal. The noodles were firm and the tonkatsu was very tender.

Yelp
A welcome replacement for Ivan Ramen since its exit, filling in the ramen void of this food court out west. The ramen style is more traditional than Ivan, specializing in Kitakata-style with a rich, umami-filled broth and thicker-cut noodles. They do offer several vegan ramen versions as well as rice bowls and a list of appetizers with Japanese small bites greatest hits, including takoyaki, pork buns, and karaage.
