"There are a lot of ways Austin has changed for the worse. But it’s also become a hotbed for global deliciousness and, unlike the horrific traffic the newcomers bring with them, nobody is complaining. G’Raj Mahal is a prime example. Located in an old, beautifully-renovated bungalow home on Rainey Street, G’Raj not only serves quality Indian food, but also appeals with its neo-Austin chic-as-f*ck ambience. Like any wildly popular Austin spot, G’Raj started out as a food truck, but later expanded into this brick and mortar space with an expanded menu. And the menu is extensive. Unless you’re with a big group that’s down to share, you will be left making some hard decisions on which delicious path to choose. We can help with that down below, as there are some things you’re going to need on your table (as well as a few you can skip). photo credit: Jordan Haro G’Raj is especially useful because it’s one of the only quality eating options on Rainey Street that isn’t a food truck. We are all for mobile restaurants, but if you’re staying at the nearby Hotel Van Zandt, or on a Rainey Street date, or hosting out-of-towners, you might want to mix it up with a proper sit-down experience. That said, in true Rainey fashion, G’Raj also has a fantastic bar and patio scene to help you continue your never-ending quest to find out which Austin vodka truly makes your life stories sound the most interesting to members of the opposite sex. Food Rundown Potato & Pea Samosas A fried dumpling filled with smashed peas and potatoes. Tasty, but a little on the dry side, so dip them in the chutneys they’re served with. Garlic Naan Naan is the ridiculously delicious Middle Eastern starch vessel served before your meal, and G’Raj’s version doesn’t disappoint. There are a variety of versions, but our favorite is the garlic. It’s fantastic. Chicken Tandoor This is a little underwhelming. Have you ever had the Trader Joe’s boxed tomato soup? It tastes like they used that instead of a sauce handed down over generations. Chicken Tikka Masala The fact that we can’t really remember anything about this tells you what you need to know about it. Seafood Coconut Curry Our favorite item on the menu, which we woke up thinking about the next day. Scallops, shrimp, and fish, all swimming around in a red curry sauce. This is a triumph." - Jordan Haro

"G’Raj Mahal, an Indian restaurant originally started as a food truck in 2009 by founder and chef Sidney Roberts, will preview its revived menu at the Levitation music festival in Austin. It had transformed into a physical restaurant on Rainey Street in 2014 before its closure in July 2021. The restaurant is set to return in a new location in Blackland at 2207 Alamo Street, though the opening date is not yet announced. During the festival, it will serve food at the Levitation Lounge at 809 East Sixth Street." - Nadia Chaudhury

"Indian restaurant G’Raj Mahal was the Rainey Street address’s previous occupant. Owner Sidney Roberts turned her food truck of the same name into the restaurant in 2014. The downtown lease was up in January 2020, but she was able to continue to operate during the pandemic through July 2021." - Nadia Chaudhury

I have really high standards when it comes to Indian food because well I'm from India so. This place really surprised me and I can recommend this as one on my top 10 in Austin. Having said that, good things - their spice levels - mild to spicy to desi spicy - that's amazing. It has ample amounts of seating - both indoor and outdoor as well as table service. The outdoor is sheltered in plastic - that's awesome and I really love the decor. The service and waiters are amazing and I love the food. The sauces weren't too intense and the selection is pretty good. I'll highly recommend this place and I'll recommend - the butter naan, the chicken Tikka, bhindi and Saag paneer.

Good food. This was really the first authentic Indian food that I have had but I have to say that it was well done. Nice atmosphere and the food was great! Good selection, the menu even had a break down of the ingredients. The waitress was helpful and the food didn't seem to take that long to arrive. I would recommend that you give this place a try if you are feeling adventurous or just wanting something out of the ordinary!

Food is not really tasty, if you ask for chicken they have more potatoes than chicken and the rice is average. The bread is amazing and the coconut one was a nice surprise for me, because it’s tasty and no so sweet and really easy to combine with the rest of your food. The environment is amazing and the waiters are super cute

I loved this this place. I’m not a huge fan of Indian cuisine due to too much curry and hot spices or sone foods tend to be bland. I’ve been overwhelmed with local Mexican and brew pub food. I love the ambience of this place and really wanted to dine in this beautiful place. I explained to the waiter what I did and didn’t like. I do like a little kick and nothing bland. He was helpful in explaining the dishes. He helped me decide on shrimp korma and natural. I also had a local beer. My late lunch was superb. I even enjoyed the birds hopping from table to table. I even has a conversation with a manager, I think. Both were very personable. Lunch was a little pricey but it was my main meal for the day. Don’t pass up this place🤩

Great food here. We got the makhani and vindaloo and they’re both great with proportionate spice levels. (medium’s good if you’re usually tame with spice) Service was great and they had a man playing, maybe Italian, lovely music with a kind of unique guitar. I love the lighting too. Overall, the ambiance was delightful.

We were there for a concert. This concert was on a back patio of the restaurant. Restaurant was full, but service on our patio was fast. Food was amazing! I’d love to come back when I am in Austin again. Really cool place, with a charming atmosphere and delicious food. Oh! They bake fresh bread in tandoori for each order.

The food and service is wonderful. The atmosphere and the place itself is very nice but the lighting is dim, so make sure to bring a flashlight to be able to see the menu. Though I have to say that if ur looking for spicy food here, then u might wanna ask for extra spicy because even just a little bit of spicy isn’t spicy at all. Also the payment, even for a few things from the menu, will cost a lot.

Absolutely delicious, authentic Indian food. There were a lot of vegetarian and dairy-free options as well. The prices were very reasonable for the portions and quality of food. Highly recommend!
